2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Owner Complaints

The OnStar module in the truck is broke it affects all communications. The truck has including things like let me know what the speed limit is. It happened after they did a software update, which seems a little fishy because there was nothing wrong with it before I understand. Some people were having problems with this module, causing their batteries to die, but now I’m the one having issues and they won’t seem to fix it unless I pay them $900.

I started to notice detached broken plastic pieces behind the upper grill housing. I notified the dealer, and in the meantime of trying to figure out what to do, the upper grill housing came detached when I was driving down the highway and flew up and back onto the highway. Sounds similar to safety recall N242490120, which was for 2022 model year trucks. Not sure why this stopped at 2022, but it happed on my 2023.

My 2023 GNC Sierra 1500 has experienced a recurring electrical and safety-related malfunction on multiple occasions while driving. The dashboard and warning lights intermittently flash on, and off and numerous warning messages appear simultaneously. During previous occurrences, warnings included power steering service, safety restraint system, check engine and transmission related messages, including a message instructing me to pull over and shut the vehicle off. During one occurrence, the electric power steering assist stopped working while I was driving. The vehicle was taken to an authorized GMC dealership multiple times while under the factory warranty. The dealer replaced the Brake System Control Module and performed vehicle-wide software/programming updates. When the problem continued, the dealer contacted GM Technical Assistance. The Dealer subsequently diagnosed an intermittent open circuit involving the electric power steering rack-and-pinion/steering gear assembly and replaced the complete steering gear assembly. Despite these repairs, the malfunction has occurred again, during another occurrence while driving on the freeway, the dashboard flashed on and off and multiple warning lights and messages repeatedly appeared, similar to the condition that occurred before the steering gear was replaced. The vehicle currently has approximately 55,000 miles. The condition remains intermittent despite multiple repair attempts. I am concerned that this recuring electrical or vehicle communication failure could again cause loss of power steering assistance or affect other safety-related vehicle systems while driving.

While driving southbound on Interstate 95 in Florida, the front upper grille molding/deflector completely detached from my 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE at highway speed and separated from the vehicle, creating a potential road hazard for other motorists. Prior to the complete separation, I noticed that the upper grille molding was becoming loose and lifting away from the vehicle. I stopped and photographed the component and its attachment areas. The photographs show failed/broken attachment points while the molding was still partially attached to the truck. Later, while driving on I-95, the remaining attachments failed and the entire molding separated from the vehicle. The part could not safely be recovered from the interstate. The vehicle recently underwent dealer service involving the active grille shutter/damper area near this component. I cannot determine whether that service contributed to the failure, so I am reporting it as part of the vehicle's recent service history rather than asserting it as the cause. I subsequently became aware that NHTSA Recall 25V-060 / GM Recall N242490120 addresses separation of a front upper grille deflector on certain GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles due to fractured attachment points. My vehicle is a 2023 model and does not presently appear to be included in that recall. Because my vehicle experienced a similar failure mode resulting in the exterior component completely separating at highway speed, I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA can determine whether this condition may extend beyond the vehicles currently covered by the recall. While driving my 2023 GMC Sierra on the highway at highway speeds, a piece of the front grille suddenly detached and flew off the vehicle. There was no prior accident, impact, or external damage to the grille; the part failed and unclipped on its own due to defective manufacturing or weak retaining clips. This creates a severe safety hazard as the flying debris could have struck the windshield of the vehicles traveling behind me, potentially causing a major accident. I am aware that the 2022 GMC Sierra has an active recall (N242490120) for this exact same issue, yet GM is refusing to cover this 2023 model under warranty or recall despite presenting identical component failure.

- vehicle started misfiring, ECM, valve timing code, throttle system code, data system, gateway, module,. Vehicle is available and currently at the GMC dealership for continued diagnostic. -this happened on the freeway and out of nowhere the vehicle started shaking, rough, losing power and acceleration, I had to cut someone off on the freeway just to get over to the right shoulder and turned off the vehicle called a tow truck and haven’t been able to use the vehicle since. Vehicle is unable to be driven due to safety issues of increased acceleration and loss of power, intense shaking. -the vehicle is at the dealership now, prior there was a diagnostic performed by a different dealer, and it has been confirmed. -the vehicle is at the GMC dealership now. -ECM check engine light came on prior to the vehicle misfiring and other codes coming up.

My grill deflector suddenly flew off, hit my windshield a flew into a semi hauling oil field equipment. We both pulled over and found no significant damage to his truck. I have a two inch scratch on my windshield and possibly lite hood scratching. Dealership required me to pay $390.73 but said I would be reimbursed for my losses. It never happened. Now I’m fighting with GM to get some resolution. This could be deadly for a motorcycle rider for sure. Hundreds of people reporting same issue on 22 and 23 Sierras and AT4’s.

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the instrument panel shut off without warning. The vehicle was restarted, and the panel remained blank with white streaks across the screen. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, and the dealer associated the failure with the instrument cluster. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 34,500.

The grill deflector flew off while driving on the highway. I was driving roughly 55 mph. It is available now, but will be getting repaired in the near future. My concern is that it appears that this was an issue with the 2022 models and it’s still an issue on the 2023. The safety issue is if there was a vehicle or motorcycle behind me that it could have harmed whoever could have been driving behind me, caused and accident, or damaged their vehicle or mine in the process. The service advisor (J.R.) told me that “sometimes the wind gets underneath the bezel and makes it snap”. No it has not been inspected by any of this mentioned. No warning signs prior to the incident.

The front grille bezel mounting clips broke and it started to fly off while driving on the highway. Luckily, I was able to pull over before the last clip broke and took it off before it became a spear flying at the cars behind me. There is an active recall for this issue for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 models, but not 2023/2024 models (same body I believe).

While towing my trailer the vehicle intermittently slams gears and will hesitate the back tires momentarily to the point of screeching. This has led to close calls being nearly rear ended and having to pull over. This started out as a hard slam while trailering on the highway and has progressively gotten worse. Had into dealership twice to multiple times to try and figure out the issue but it’s not throwing any codes and they can’t get it to duplicate the issues. Nothing can be replaced due to no codes even though they think the valve body is going bad. Leaving the vehicle as a ticking time bomb for failure which could result potentially in a catastrophic incident. Only had the vehicle for one year now has 37k miles on it and have had the ecm, full wiring harness, and multiple sensors replaced already for a different problem early this year that had the truck in the shop for a month.

Complete engine failure while driving on a highway. While cruise was set, the truck emitted a sound and sensation like we had run over something on the highway. Within a few minutes the engine started ticking. The cruise was disengaged which thru the truck into neutral. No dashboard sensors were illuminated. We were able to get off the highway but the truck would not restart. Truck was towed to nearest dealer who has confirmed engine failure.

Engine light came on while driving and a message on dashboard said Service Transmission Now.Unable To Shift Soon. Took to dealer and they said it was the park position switch 1circuit high. Had to order part but not knowing how long to get it. Truck only has 12468 miles. Luckily I got it to the dealer ASAP. IF I were on the highway or a remote road, I feel that a serious accident would have happened. Having an electronic controlled console shifter not being able to get the truck to shift gears to slow down or stop is a real safety issue. Extended warranty does not cover anything like this. Please look into this. Thank you

The upper top grille mold detached from the vehicle while traveling at highway speed (about 65 mph). It hit the hood, which it scratched and flew off into the air, above the vehicle and in the way of oncoming traffic. Fortunately, no one was behind me so the part did not hit another vehicle. Vehicle had around 65k miles when this occured. I have contacted a local dealership who informed me that while many similar vehicles have a recall for this issue my VIN is not included in that recall.

The upper hood trim that sits above the grill, flew off on the interstate at approx 80 mph. Upon research this is a common problem for this make and model in years of 22-24. GM has a service bulletin for this issue as well as the NHTSA. For this particular failure. There was no warning and when I contacted GM they were unwilling to assist as "service bulletins" are not recalls and the vehicle is out of warranty. There was no warning, no indicator, it just blew off and I had no idea until I got home and the piece was missing. I was unable to locate the part on the interstate, however I was able to keep all of the pieces attached to the vehicle for evidence and support. I am beside myself anyone thought this was acceptable to sustain the force of air flow!

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, there was an engine knock at start-up, and the engine intermittently hesitated and skipped. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who performed a PICO test on the engine, and the engine passed. Later, while hauling a trailer, there was a rattling sound coming from the engine. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The engine, radiator, and oil cooler were replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 17,000.

Oct 2025 I took my truck into my local GMC dealer for 6.2 recall. I was told it passed the testing. 6/12/26 driving about 70mph on highway and lost all acceleration. Warning stating engine oil hot,/ pull over and idle engine. Already using 0w40 oil for approx 8momnths. Oil changed approx 3 wks before this incident. I was able to pull to the shoulder w/in 1/4 mile. While the truck was still moving about 3 mph it went into park and shut off. The vehicle would not turn back on. Oil level was full. For about $300 I was able to have the truck towed to a local dealer (about 2hrs from my home) and have my trailer towed off the highway. 6/15/26 I was notified by a local dealer that the engine was seized and that this was probably the recall issue. I contacted my local dealer who had my truck towed to their location. On 6/19/26 I was told by local dealer rep that they had ordered an engine for my truck and that I was third in line. On 6/26/26 I was informed by the dealer that he engine is on an indefinite backorder nationwide. On 6/30/26 I received a call from GM giving me a case number and getting contact info for my local dealer. I was advised that someone would contact me within 48 business hours. 7/3/26 I was contacted by my case advisor from GM. Still no idea when replacement engines might be available. I inquired about a buyback since I need a truck for work/personal life. I advised her that I had already cancelled one vacation (towing an RV...my loaner Buick Encore won't work) and would probably have to cancel another. I tried to explain that farming doesn't work well with the loaner either. I was told that another advisor would look into a buyback situation. On 7/8/26 I received a call from GM advising that my engine had shipped on 7/6/26 and to expect a call the following week with an update on completion.

I was driving my family on the highway and my truck completely shut down. The screen flashed a warning and it slowly started decelerating. Thankfully I was able to make it to the shoulder of the road safely. Engine failure was a known safety issue with my model of truck, but I completed the L87 Engine Loss of Propulsion safety recall testing on 9/18/2025 and was assured my engine passed the testing and was not at risk for engine failure.

The front grille/hood trim flew off driving down the highway. No, it is not available the cheap plastic shattered. My safety was put at risk b/c parts are flying off the truck that should never. More importantly other people's safety is put at risk b/c a long SHARP plastic piece is flying off a large truck driving down the highway!! Yes, Glenn Polk has seen the damage and can confirm. No, no one else has inspected it yet but you gladly can, it doesn't take a genius to see that the cheap POS plastic was terrible engineering by GM. There were no warnings or indications that the piece was even loose.

Traveling had an engine light come on. stopped at a dealer they inspected found multiple errors reset engine light and said continue home. when home bring into my dealer. Got home that night went to start truck, all kinds of errors started popping up on the dash, vehicle would not turn over at all. Had to call wrecker to have brought into shop. First issue could not put the truck into neutral at all, so they had to pull in park to put unto the bed of wrecker (that seems to be a very poor design of the truck). Brought truck into shop received a call two days later that it is fixed and working fine. Went to the shop asked what the problem was, told there is a ground strap under the truck that is like the main part to make sure everything works regarding electronics. The dealer has had to repair many of these ground straps, they are exposed to the elements and come loose I was told. They had two other GMC trucks in the shop with the same issue that day. the ground strap is exposed to the elements do not understand why this would not be covered just like a battery lead to stop from corroding and have to clean it or replace it. Not to mention there is no where in the service manual I can find about any maintenance that needs to be done with it. Appears to be a very bad design from the car manufacture.
