What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 GMC Terrain, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
I bought this car and the mileage said 120K, but the title says when it was tagged 157K. the car has been tampered with and the some of the lights for the car on the dash are missing, such as the check engine light. Also, it misses so bad that it will die at times

The vehicle was taken to O’Reilly Auto Parts, where it was diagnosed with a misfire in cylinder #3. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that there was no compression in cylinder #3. The vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact stated that several oil consumption tests were performed by the dealer over the past three years. The contact stated that after each oil consumption test was performed, the oil pressure was always a quart or more lower when checked; however, the contact was informed that it was not an issue. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2010 GMC Terrain. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the center console display intermittently malfunctioned and became inoperable. During the failure, the HVAC system was no longer blowing hot air, and the front windshield could not be defrosted, creating a visibility hazard for the driver. Additionally, the radio had become inoperable, and the audible clicking from the turn signal was muted. The cause of the failures was not yet determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failures and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 09V489000 (VISIBILITY). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 114,000.

Reduce spreed unknown if related to fuel pressure regulator since repaired twice told could be to service bulletin. Warning lights keeps appearing while driving at a speed of 40 to 50 mph.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
My 2010 Terrain had been been intermittent dash warnings for “Service StabiliTrac” and “Engine Power Reduced” which would force the engine to reduce the speed itself down to about 30 MPH. After turning off car and restarting, warnings would go away. Yesterday, while driving on a secondary road, with no check engine light on, the engine stalled while traveling at approx 35 MPH. I was able to drop the vehicle into neutral and coast onto a side street, while also attempting to restart the engine. I was able to pull over without causing an accident. After letting the car sit for a few minutes I attempted to restart the engine, but only got a strange noise from the area of the upper cylinders. At his point the check engine light was now on. While waiting for a tow truck, and independent mechanic pulled up to ask if I needed help. After listening to the noice from the upper engine he asked if he could get tools and look in the engine. I said yes. He quickly pulled parts off the upper engine and opened and removed the upper cylinder cover. This revealed that the timing chain had no tension, as well as shards of shattered plastic all over the place, in and around the upper cylinders. After pointing this out he put everything back together and suggested I contact the dealership I got the vehicle from, which I have done already. He then stated that it appears that the engine would need to be replaced or rebuilt, due to catastrophic engine failure. He said my quick thinking of putting the vehicle into neutral probably avoided causing an accident and allowed me to get myself to a safe spot before stopping the vehicle. He also stated that this particular GM motor is known for catastrophic failure, which GM has failed or refused to acknowledge
THE EMERGENCY FLASHER BUTTON STICKS DOWN IT STICKS BEING PUSHED IN ALONG WITH THE ECO BUTTON AND I FEEL THE DRIVE SHAFT SHOULD BE MORE DURABLE THAN 155,000 MI OR 11 YEARS
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
I ONLY HAD MY CAR FOR JUST ABOUT ONE YEAR. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ENDED UP COMING ON AND I FOUND THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WAS THE CULPRIT. NO MATTER WHAT I DO THIS SENSOR COMES ON. NOW HERE RECENTLY, THE LIGHT TO CHECK THE AIRBAG SYSTEM HAS COME ON. I HAVE ONCE BEFORE CHECKED TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE, BUT THERE SUPPOSEDLY WERE NONE, YET I SEE SO MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUES THAT I AM HAVING ON TOP OF THE DEFROST SYSTEM BEING NO GOOD. THIS CAR HAS COST ME MORE THAN IT IS WORTH AND SELLING IT WOULD JUST LEAVE ME WITH NOTHING BECAUSE I STILL OWE ON IT. I NEED FIXES AND ANSWERS BEFORE THIS THING ENDS UP IN FLAMES WHICH IS WHAT I FEAR EACH DAY I DRIVE IT. THIS BEGAN IN AUGUST OF LAST YEAR AND NOW I AM GETTING SCARED FOR MY LIFE.
FAULTY DRIVER WINDOW MOTOR, HEATED SEAT DRIVERS SIDE, BLINKING CD ON DASH, NOISES COMING FROM CD PLAYER, HEATER CORE AND THERMOSTAT,AIRBAGS,RELAYS AND FUSES. ALL WENT OUT INCLUDING LUMBAR BACK PAD ON DRIVERS SIDE. WHILE IN MOTION

From owner reports, verbatim
Reduce spreed unknown if related to fuel pressure regulator since repaired twice told could be to service bulletin. Warning lights keeps appearing while driving at a speed of 40 to 50 mph.
ENGINE - SLOWS DOWN AND SPEED UP AND JOLT AS IT ACCELERATE IN SPEED. HEATED SEATS - A MONTH AFTER PURCHASE THEY STOPPED WORKED OIL PUMP - THE FILTER GETS CLOGGED WITH METAL SHAVING AND WOULD NOT ALLOW THE OIL TO GET TO THE ENGINE. AS A RESULT, I HAD TO GET OIL CHANGES 3 TIMES IN A MONTH. DASH BOARD AND STEREO LIGHT WOULD FLICKER AND DIM. STEREO WOULD REPEAT WORDS AND GET STUCK IN ONE PLACE. THE WIND SHIELD WIPERS STOPPED WORKING DURING A RAIN STORM AND WERE WIPING IN TWO SEPARATE DIRECTIONS AT THE SAME TIME.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE VEHICLE WILL SHUTTER VERY HARD WHEN ACCELERATING OUT OF EITHER RIGHT OR LEFT TURNS OR WHEN YOU HOLD THE STEERING WHEEL IN A COMPLETE U-TURN TYPE ACTION. THE SHUDDER IS FELT THROUGHOUT THE VEHICLE AND CAN BE VERY ALARMING. IT FEELS LIKE YOU HAVE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND THE BRAKES ARE LOCKED UP. IT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED WITH SOME NOTICE TO ALL TERRAIN OWNERS. I HAVE NOW SPENT SERIOUS TIME AND $1K ATTEMPTING TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM.
WHILE DRIVING THE STABILITY TRACK SERVICE LIFT COMES ON, THE ABS, BRAKES, SERVICE ALL WHEEL DRIVE, AS WELL AS THE SERVICE POWER STEERING AT WHICH TIME I LOSE POWER STEERING. IT ALSO FEELS LIKE IT IS ACCELERATING SLUGGISHLY WHEN DRIVE SOMETIMES. THIS HAPPENS AND GOES OFF SOMETIMES WITH OUT ME TURNING THE CAR OFF OR STOPPING BUT OTHER TIMES I HAVE TO PULL OVER AND WAIT A FEW MINUTES AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF. IT HAPPENS VARIOUS TIMES. AT ONE MOMENT IT IS DRIVING FINE AND THEN THESE LIGHTS COME ON. WHEN TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP THE LIGHTS HAVE GONE OFF AND THEY GET NO CODES.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. WHILE ON A SLIGHT INCLINE,CAR WOULD NOT GO INTO REVERSE .FORWARD ACCELERATION WAS VERY SLUDGIEST. CORROSION ON PASSENGER SIDE DOOR.
THE REAR DOOR AIR LIFT WILL NOT STAY OPEN WHEN YOU PRESS THE BUTTON. ON 2 OCCASIONS I HIT MY HEAD BECAUSE I DID NOT KNOW IT HAD DROPPED DOWN WHEN I WAS LOADING AND UNLOADING GROCERIES. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A PARKING LOT AND IN MY GARAGE. IT WAS NOT RUNNING. I FOUND AN ENTIRE PAGE ON THE INTERNET OF MANY PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. IT IS CALLED THE TERRAIN FORUM.NET . THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE HAVE SAID THEY HAVE HAD THEM DEAD FALL. PEOPLE COULD BE INJURED OR KILLED BY THE FORCE OF THIS DOOR COMING DOWN ON THEIR HEADS. GMC HAS RECALLS ON THIS PROBLEM WITH SOME OF THEIR OTHER CALLS BUT NOT THE GMC TERRAIN. I TALKED WITH THEM TODAY AND THEY SAID THEY HAVE NOT HAD ENOUGH COMPLAINTS TO HAVE A RECALL! Parts distribution disconnect.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE AUTOMATIC BRAKE ASSIST LOCKS UP THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL. THE WHEEL STILL TURNS BUT THE BRAKE OVERHEATS AND STARTS SMOKING AFTER JUST A FEW MINUTES OF DRIVING. IT WAS BEING DRIVEN ON A CITY STREET AT ABOUT 30 TO 40 MPH. NORMAL BRAKING AT STOPLIGHTS AND SUDDENLY FELT LIKE A TIRE HAD GONE FLAT. WHEN I CHECKED, THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WAS SMOKING. WE HAD THE CALIPERS AND PADS REPLACED, BUT THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM
DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY MY CAR WOULD NOT GO. CAR SENSOR PREVENTED MY CAR FROM MOVING BECAUSE THE WHEEL BEARINGS WENT OUT ON THE USED CAR I JUST PURCHASED. THE TIMING BELT IS ALSO LOOSE AND THE MOTOR CAN SEIZE UP AT ANY MOMENT. MY ALL WHEEL DRIVE STOPPED WORKING AS WELL BECAUSE OF THIS. I HAD TO PUT ON MY FLASHERS AND TRY TO MAKE IT TO AN AREA WHERE I COULD GET OFF THE HIGHWAY. I CALLED A TOW TRUCK. I HAVE COPIES THEY WILL NOT DOWNLOAD HERE, BUT AVAILABLE IF NEEDED.
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 GMC TERRAIN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SEAT BELT INDEPENDENTLY TIGHTENED AND WOULD NOT UNLATCH. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THEY HAD TO CUT THE SEAT BELT. PENSKE BUICK GMC OF CERRITOS (18400 STUDEBAKER RD, CERRITOS, CA) WAS CONTACTED, BUT DID NOT DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 94,000.
APPROXIMATELY AROUND THE HIGH 4X,XXX MILES THE ENGINE STARTED GIVING ME EXTENDED CRANKING ISSUES. IT WOULD CRANK FOR 4-5 SECONDS AND NOT START AT ALL OR START BUT IDLES REALLY LOW LIKE ITS GOING TO DIE. I HAS DONE THIS COUNTLESS AMOUNT OF TIMES, EVEN CAUGHT IT ON VIDEO NUMEROUS TIMES ONLY BECAUSE EVERY TIME I BRING IT IN FOR THE STARTING ISSUE I ALWAYS GET THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR VEHICLE, HAVE A NICE DAY. IT GETS REALLY FRUSTRATING WHEN THE WIFE AND I DAILY DRIVE IT AND IT HAPPENS ABOUT 2-3 PER WEEK. AT TIMES WHEN I TURN OFF THE CAR, IT SOUNDS LIKE ITS STILL ON FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THAN TURNS OFF LIKE WHEN A BUILDING LOSES POWER. ON ANOTHER HAND, OVER A MONTH AGO THE DEALERSHIP CHECKED THE OIL AND SAID I WAS REALLY LOW ON OIL. BUT THEIRS STILL NOTHING WRONG WITH MY VEHICLE THEY CLAIM. AND TO MAKE THINGS WORSE THE SEATBELT SENSOR CAME ON AND STAYS ON A FEW HOURS AFTER I PICKED UP MY VEHICLE FROM THE LAST VISIT TO GET IT CHECKED FOR THIS CRANKING PROBLEM. THIS IS THE WORSE VEHICLE I EVER OWNED. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THE TERRAIN TO ANYONE. OH YEAH, I ALSO BROUGHT IT TOO 2 DIFFERENT GMC/CHEVY DEALERS WITH NO HELP FROM THEM AT ALL. THIS IS THE LAST TIME I'LL BUY A GMC/CHEVY VEHICLE - BUILT VERY POORLY. *TR

From owner reports, verbatim
VEHICLE FAILED PENNSYLVANIA INSPECTION DUE TO SIDEWALL CRACKING ON ALL FOUR OEM MICHELIN LATITUDE TOUR P235/55R18 TIRES (FRONT TIRES HAVE 6/32" TREAD DEPTH REMAINING, REAR TIRES HAVE 7/32" TREAD DEPTH REMAINING). VEHICLE DEEMED UNSAFE TO DRIVE UNTIL ALL TIRES ARE REPLACED DUE TO RISK OF BLOWOUT. MICHELIN CAMPAIGN #13T006000 DOES NOT COVER THIS PARTICULAR TIRE, EVEN THOUGH SIDEWALL DEFECT IS THE SAME AS THAT AFFECTING THOSE TIRES THAT ARE INCLUDED IN RECALL. OWNER WAS OFFERED A 60% DISCOUNT ON REPLACEMENT TIRES FROM AN AUTHORIZED MICHELIN RETAILER, WHICH MANUFACTURER'S EXECUTIVE RESPONSE MANAGER CALLED "FAIR." MICHELIN NEEDS TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE DEFECT BY RECALLING AND REPLACING THESE TIRES BEFORE AN EXPECTANT MOTHER LIKE MYSELF IS KILLED DRIVING ON THEM. EITHER MICHELIN STANDS BY ITS WORKMANSHIP AND MATERIALS WARRANTY OR THEY DO NOT. *JS
I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY AND ALL OF A SUDDEN IT SLOWED DOWN TO ABOUT 20 MPH WITHOUT ANY WARNING. I LOOKED DOWN AND SAW THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DASHBOARD IT SAID ENGINE SPEED REDUCED. I BACKED DOWN AN ENTRANCE RAMP TO GET ONTO A LOCAL ROAD. AFTER 1 HOUR THE CAR WAS RESTARTED AND SEEMED OK. NOT LONG AFTER IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I TOOK IT TO THE GMC DEALER, THEY DROVE IT 47 MILES AND COULD NOT GET IT TO ACT UP.I GOT THE CAR BACK, DROVE IT 70 MILES HOME AND THE NEXT MORNING IT HAPPENED AGAIN, 3 MILES FROM MY HOUSE. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER THEN REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY FOR $540. IT HAS BEEN FINE FOR 2 WEEKS. IN 2010, GMC DECIDED NOT TO COVER THIS PART UNDER THE ENGINE WARRANTY (AS IT DID IN PREVIOUS YEARS) AND NOW ASSIGNS IT TO THE EMISSION SYSTEM WHICH IS NOT COVERED. I HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM LISTED ALL OVER THE INTERNET ON MANY VEHICLES. IT IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN THE CAR SLOWS DOWN LIKE THIS ON THE HIGHWAY. PLEASE ADD MY COMPLAINT TO THE LONG LIST OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE THIS PROBLEM. THANK YOU. *TR

VEHICLE STARTED MAKING LOUD RUBBING NOISE COMING FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE WHEEL. IF VEHICLE HAD CONTINUED TO BE DRIVEN, IT IS POSSIBLE THE WHEEL COULD HAVE FALLEN OFF. THE WHEEL HUB BEARING WAS DEFECTIVE. AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET FORUMS IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THIS IS A REOCCURING PROBLEM ON GMC TERRAINS AND CHEVROLET EQUINOX. GMC REFUSED TO REPAIR UNDER WARRANTY AND AFTER SUBMISSION TO THEM FOR REIMBURSEMENT, THEY DECILINED. *TR
