What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2011 GMC Terrain, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

We have 2011 GMC Terrain. We bought it used so we have only had it a couple years. We noticed it seemed to be using a little more oil but then we were told to keep watch on it. My husband did. Then one day while I was driving it I thought I had heard a faint clicking noise. I said that car isn’t going anywhere until it’s fixed. Little did we know it wouldn’t ever start again. We didn’t know about a so call recall or not a recall. Still until we had to have it towed in to be fixed, I heard it mentioned. By then the car was repaired at our expense of $8000+. We are retired and don’t have or didn’t have money for that repair. The only reason we had a little money was because my husband got paid for back (lump sum) payment just a couple of days before this. We still owe on the car. Without it we only have an old 2001GMC SIERRA 1500. We live paycheck to paycheck. I called one of GMC’s phone numbers today and I was told if we didn’t have it done at a GMC FACILITY we get NO reimbursement. I cried. My husband is a real stickler when it comes to our vehicles and maintenance and logs and also keeps receipts. Please tell me there is some to help us.

SUV gets a slow down warning and it stops shuts off , it’s happened several times now I’m scared!!you wait few minutes it turns back on , mechanic said this a complain about this vehicle all the time , it has not been repaired I’m disabled with no money , I was on the highway and thank God I was on the slow lane if not I would have been killed by an eighteen wheeler. GMC is waiting for someone to die and probably address this issue

I WAS DRIVING BACK HOME FROM THE STORE FRIDAY NIGHT AND MY WHEELS START SQUEAKING AND INCREASINGLY BECAME HARD TO THEN THE WHEEL WHENEVER I TURNED. WHEN I GOT HOME TRIED TO PARK THE WHEELS LOCKED UP AND I COULDN'T TURN THE WHEELS ANYMORE. DIVER THE CAR AGAIN MONDAY IT WAS FINE UNTIL I WAS MY WAY HOME AGAIN THE WHEELS LOCKED UP, CAR WOULDN'T ACCELERATE PART 2ND GEAR, THEN I WASN'T ABLE TO REVERSE AND MY ENGINEER LIGHT CAME ON. I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR 5 MONTHS AGO FROM A DEALERSHIP. NO I DON'T HAVE A WARRANTY AND THERE IS 86927 MILES ON IT. NO ACCIDENTS WHATSOEVER. I RECENTLY FOUND OUT THAT THIS VEHICLE IS KNOWN TO HAVE TRANSMISSION FAILURE.
HESITATION AND LAG ON ACCELERATION AFTER HARD OR QUICK BRAKE APPLICATION. FEELS LIKE ENGINE MOMENTARILY STALLING OR TRANS MISSION NOT ENGAGING FOR ONE OR TWO SECONDS.. HAPPENS WHEN VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, HAPPENS IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC, HAPPENS COMING OUT OF TURNS,ALSO IN STRAIGHT LINE MOTION. POSES A SAFETY RISK SUCH AS WHEN ENTERING AN INTERSECTION AND NOT BEING ABLE TO ACCELERATE THROUGH THE INTERSECTION TO AVOID COLLISION WITH OTHER VEHICLES CROSSING THAT INTERSECTION.
Visibility

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2011 GMC Terrain. The contact discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy after the purchase. The vehicle was a private sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 87,000, and at the time of registration, it was discovered that the mileage was 200,000.
Ok so my 2011 GMC terrain just went over 150,000 miles I bought this vehicle used from a dealership not knowing that there was a big lawsuit or that GMC continuted making this make and model knowing that it had a oil usage problem. So mmm mmm with that being said let's start with my vehicle uses oil, my vehicle idles high low and always rough at times, my service stabilitrak flashes, my motor sounds like a HEMI kock knock knock instead of a 2.4, doesn't matter where I'm at or where I'm going I let off of the gas and my car dies.... Let me clarify on that last one me and my 9 year old daughter we're headed home today let off the gas to go around a curve and a hill and you guesswd it my 2011 GMC TERRAIN died I lost all control and all power had no power steering and no brakes... I just thank Jesus I wasn't speeding and that there was no oncoming traffic cuz I don't think me nor my 9 year old would have made it out ok. So thanks to whatever faulty motor engine or power train GMC has with this make and model putting people's safety and lives in danger due to these issues and only choosing certain VINS eligible instead of all VINS from 2011 GMC TERRAINS in my opinion is just choosing which owners survive because this make and model is dangerous to whoever drives it and to whoever meets it on the highway.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The service airbag warning light came on in the vehicle last week. I took the car to be serviced. Per service advisor, the passenger side seat air bag was out of spec. Air bag wire had to be repaired. The new wire would be available for inspection upon request. The safety of passengers in the car were at risk since the air bag had to be fixed.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 GMC TERRAIN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HENDRICK SOUTHPOINT AUTO MALL LOCATED AT (127 KENTINGTON DR, DURHAM, NC 27713) WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH FRACTURED WIRES UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER SEAT. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED OUT OF POCKET HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 110,000.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
The 2.4l ecotec motor has had so many complaints not only for gmc terrain but also the Chevy equinox. The motor just stops and lose everything while driving! I was in traffic and it stop almost causing an accountant God I wasn't hurt! Now I have this car with a blown motor because it's a no tolerance motor. We spend so much money on these vehicles and spend so much to keep them safe for driving on the road and yet when it comes to the company cutting corners to save money they don't get faulted for putting faulty equipment in these vehicles. I have a 2011 terrain and I bought it in 2019 for 9000 and drove it a month before the motor blew it has less then 100000 miles on it and for me to get a new motor it's another 5000. I just don't understand why if the equipment is faulty and so many complaints have been posted about the same issue why it's not being recalled or why we can't get the company to give us new motors or a new car! We are expected to pay insurance registration inspections test every year and pay for the normal wear on the vehicles to make sure they are safe but they can't recall faulty parts! I foster children and can't afford to make expensive purchases that weren't caused by neglect on my part
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.

GOT INTO CAR ONE DAY AND THE DRIVERS SIDE SEAT HAD DROPPED TO IT'S LOWEST POSITION. SAW THAT A BOLT THAT AIDS THE SEAT RISER MECHANISM HAD FALLEN OUT. VERY DANGEROUS IF HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING. I WAS ABLE TO MANUALLY SCREW IT BACK IN.
CAR RATTLES ON START UP AND SEEMS TO BE NOISIER THAN IT SHOULD BE. DRIVERS SEAT HEATER UTILIZES HIGH HEAT NO MATTER WHAT SETTINGS IT IS ON. IF HEATER IS LEFT ON I GET A BURNING SMELL. POOR FUEL ECONOMY, AT BEST I GET 22 MPH. ENGINE RUNS ROUGH IN ECO MODE ESPECIALLY AT AN IDLE. I HAVE HAD AN OCCASIONAL ISSUE WITH HARD DOWNSHIFTS WHEN I DECELERATE THEN ACCELERATE. I DO MOSTLY CITY DRIVING. *TR
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
The failure point was the seal on the sunroof and the sunroof itself. A correct failure mode would be for it to leak into the cabin thus being immediately visable. Instead, an internal seal apparently failed allowing the intruding water to flow unobserved into the bulkhead region between the car body and the internal liner of the vehicle. As a consequence it flowed down a side post exiting into the dashboard and control panel. The dashboard shorted out elliminating the turn signal indicator (and possibly the turn signal itself). The radio and amplifier and the general alarm system went to maximum volume. Fortunately, it did not short out the airbag, thus it did not deploy while I was on the freeway, maybe next time. The salient point is that water was allowed to intrude through the sunroof and able to proceed unobserved to the back of the dashboard. The inside of the car was removed and replaced as was the major components behind the dashboard. The airbags were not replaced.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2011 GMC TERRAIN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, A SECOND VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. MOMENTS LATER FLAMES WERE PRESENT COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND THE VEHICLE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE DOORS WERE LOCKED AND WOULD NOT UNLOCK. THE REAR DRIVER SIDE DOOR WAS KICK OPEN AND THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR PULLED OPENED WHICH ALLOWED THE OCCUPANTS TO EXIT. ALSO DURING THE INCIDENT THE SIDE AIR BAGS DID NOT PROPERLY DEFLATE AFTER DEPLOYMENT. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED NECK, BACK AND SHOULDER INJURIES. THE FRONT PASSENGER SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE LUMBAR SPINE AND HIP AND THE REAR SEAT PASSENGER SUSTAINED A BRUISED STERNUM. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED AWAY. A POLICE REPORT WAS TAKEN AT THE SCENE. THE MANUFACTURER AND LOCAL DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000.

I WAS HAVING THE STRUTS AND SHOCKS LOOKED AT IN MY CAR. WHILE THE WORKER FINISHED THE JOB, HE PUT THE CAR DOWN AND TOOK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE TO MAKE SURE IT WAS GOOD TO GO. ONE THAT TEST DRIVE, HE SAID SOMETHING DID NOT SEEM CORRECT. AFTER HE GOT IT BACK TO THE SHOP AND BACK ON THE RACK, THE FRAME WAS CRACKED AND RUSTED THROUGH. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE WHEN MY CAR WAS PREVIOUSLY WORKED ON BY GETTING A NEW BALL JOINT BACK IN THE FALL OF 2019. *TR

I BOUGH 2011 GMC TERRAIN 4 CYLINDER.. ABOUT 3 MONTHS LATER THE CAR START TO STALL ON ME MAKING WEIRD NOISES AND LOSING OIL..TOOK TO A DEALERSHIP NEAR WHERE I LIVE THE SERVICE GUY ASKED ME IF IT STALLS ON YOU WILL HAVE TO STALL ON ME TOOK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE DIDNT STALL.. I PUT MY FOOT DOWN AND SAID TO HIM TO SCAN THE CAR AT THE POINT HE GAVE ME A CAR TO COME HOME AND I LEFT MY TERRAIN THEIR TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS THEY FOUND OUT THAT THE SENSORS FAILED AND SOME OTHER STUFF.. AFTER THE CAR BEING THEIR FOR 4 DAYS I GO PICK IT UP AND IT WAS BETTER... ONLY LASTED FOR 6 MONTHS STARTED AGAIN TO BREAK DOWN AND LEAKING OIL I WOULD CHANGE THE OIL EVERY 3 MONTHS BUT IN BETWEEN I HAD TO PUT OIL THAT I WOULD HAVE TO GO TO THE STORE OR GASTATION WHEN I WAS PUTTING GAS... I AM A VERY BUSY HARD WORKING PERSON SO MY TIME IS LIMITED AND I HAVE 2 KIDS IF NOT I WOULD GO TO THE DEALERSHIP EVERY OTHER DAY TO COMPLAINT... ALSO WITH NOT A LOT OF TIME IN MY HANDS HERE GOES ANOTHER YEAR AND THE PROBLEM REALLY NEVER GOT PROPERLY FIXED AND THE CAR IS MAKING CRAZY NOISES LEAKING OIL ALL OVER AND STALLING AGAIN..WE COULD GET KILLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAR NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY... I ALMOST GOT INTO A CAR ACCIDENT CAUSE I WAS DRIVING AND CAR JUST STOPPED... THIS IS UNFAIR ESPECIALLY AFTER READING HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS WHEN I JUST TYPE ON MY COMPUTER 2011 GMC STALLING PROBLEMS TONS OF PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINT THE SAME WAY WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS I AM HAVING... OIL LEAKING STALLING ON HIGHWAYS JUST HORRIBLE I ALSO HAD THE CAR TOWED ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO JUST STOPPED CAM SENSOR NEED TO CHANGED AGAIN.FOR THE LAST 3 WEEKS THE CAR IS AGAIN STILLING BUT THANKFULLY I PUT IN PARK AND IT STARTS UP AGAIN... THIS PROBLEM SHOULD GET RESOLVED... TONS OF PEOPLE HAVING THIS SAME ISSUES GMC SHOULD BE EMBARRASSED OF THIS SITUATION AND FIX IT OR AT LEAST TRY... THE PEOPLE AT THE DEALERSHIP AT THE SERVICE DESK THEMSELVES ARE TIRED OF HEARING PEOPLE SCREAMING AT THEM ABOUT ALL THIS ISSUES.. *TR

Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTING IS ERRATIC AND CREATES A PROBLEM WHEN IN HEAVY DOWN TOWN TRAFFIC WHERE THERE IS STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. CAR WILL HESITATE BEFORE IT GOES INTO PROPER GEAR.THIS IS THE 4 CYLINDER MODEL I AM DRIVING.VERY HAD SHIFT FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR AT ALL TIMES.I DO NOT ALLOW ANY OF MY FAMILY TO DRIVE THIS CAR BECAUSE IT HAS BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE IN MY OPINION. *TR
I HAVE A 2.5 MONTH OLD 2011 GMC TERRAIN. AT 4984 MILES IT IS IN THE SHOP FOR STALLING, FOR A HORRIBLE RATTLE UPON START UP, AND FOR IT JERKING BETWEEN FIRST AND SECOND GEAR. WHEN I TOOK IT IN THIS MORNING IT HAD STALLED SIX TIMES WITHIN THE PAST 2 DAYS. IT STALLS AFTER START-UP IN FORWARD AND REVERSE AND IT STALLED THREE TIMES WHILE IN IDLE IN A FAST FOOD DRIVE-THRU. THERE IS ALSO THE RATTLING WHICH HAPPENS ON COLD AND WARM STARTS, WHETHER THE A/C OR ECO MODE ARE ON. IT SOUNDS LIKE METAL RATTLING AND LIKE IT IS HARMING THE ENGINE. THE LEAST OF MY WORRIES, IS THE FACT THAT BETWEEN 25-35 MILES AN HOUR THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS VERY HARD AND KICKS MYSELF AND PASSENGERS FORWARD. APPARENTLY THERE IS A TECH BULLETIN THAT HAS BEEN OUT FOR THE RATTLE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. WHY NOT FIX THEM BEFORE THEY SELL THEM? ALSO, THERE IS A RECALL #11195 FOR "ROUGH IDLE, POOR DRIVEABILITY" THAT DOESN'T SHOW UP ON THE NHTSA SITE OR ANYWHERE ELSE BUT THE GMC DEALER'S COMPUTER. ADDITIONALLY, DESPITE THE CLAIMS, I HAVE NEVER GOTTEN BETTER THAN 21 MPG WHILE DRIVING THIS CAR INCLUDING AN ALL HIGHWAY TRIP FROM MICHIGAN TO INDIANA. I THINK IT IS FALSE ADVERTISING AND THE FUEL ECONOMY IN ECO OR NOT IS NOT WHAT THEY CLAIM WHEN THE Y SOLD THE VEHICLE TO ME. *TR
