2004 GMC Yukon Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2004 GMC Yukon, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2004 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that while attempting to trade the vehicle in, the dealer discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy, per the Carfax report. The vehicle was a dealer sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 165,563. The actual mileage could not be determined because the Carfax report displayed that the mileage had drastically fluctuated over the years. No other agency was contacted.

NHTSA ID 11706534 · filed Dec 22, 2025

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Yukon. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the vehicle started losing motive power. The check engine warning light and another unknown warning light were illuminated, and a message was displayed that the gas port was reducing power. On a separate occasion, the vehicle started to lose motive power and then the vehicle started to shake. The vehicle was losing power and shaking until the vehicle was turned off. The vehicle was restarted and drove normally for six months without failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with throttle body failure; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted three more times with different diagnoses. The vehicle was taken to other independent mechanics however, the cause for the failure was not yet determined. The vehicle was not repaired for the most recent failure. The dealer was not made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 123,000.

My kids and I was on the interstate and all of sudden my yukon reduce engine power.Dropping to 30 in a speed zone of 70.I was very afraid for our safety and appreciate there concerns for reducing engine power to save the truck, but that's very dangerous. So I paid to replace the throttle body and gas pedal cause that was the codes for the problem. But it's still doing the same thing and I don't have money to keep buying parts.Plus it a gm problem and I really need some help with the fixture..

ACTUATORS STOPPED FUNCTIONING PROPERLY TO CONTROL A/C AND HEAT IN VEHICLE WHEN TURNED ON. IF A/C IS TURNED ON, IT MAY RUN FOR AWHILE THEN TURN TO HEATING CYCLE ON ONE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE OR THE OTHER. THIS HAPPENS WHETHER THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION OR NOT. IF HEAT IS CALLED FOR IN WINTER, I.E. TO DEFROST WINDOWS, THE HEAT MAY OR MAY NOT RUN OR IF RUNNING MAY TURN TO A/C. MANY TIMES IN WINTER THE HEAT TURNS TO A/C AND THERE IS NO HEAT ENTERING THE VEHICLE. NOTED THERE WERE NUMEROUS GMC VEHICLES WITH THE SAME ISSUE AS LATE AS 2015 WHEN LOOKING ON THE INTERNET.

UPON TAKING DELIVERY OF VEHICLE ERRATIC ELECTRICAL PROBLEM EXISTED. OFTEN ONLY THE FRONT DOORS WOULD LIKE, LEAVING THE BACK DOORS AND REAR DOOR UNLOCKED. OFTEN UPON INSERTING KEY IN IGNITION, DRIVERS SEAT WOULD ZOOM FORWARD PUSHING OCCUPANT AGAINST STEERING WHEEL. WHILE DRIVING, OUTSIDE REAR VIEW MIRRORS WOULD RETRACT FOR NO REASON. DEALER HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIX THOUGH MANY SERVICE NOTES EXIST. LATELY, THE AMP GAUGE FAILED HOWEVER AMPERAGE IS NOT AFFECTED. NEXT THE SPEEDOMETER SHOWED 38 MPH WHILE NOT MOVING. IT IS TOTALLY NOW INOPERATIVE, VARYING FROM NEVER LEAVING ZERO TO SHOWING 80 WHILE GOING 20 MPH. SINCE I CANNOT TRUST THE ACCURACY OF ANY GAUGE, I HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST I AM DRIVING OR ANY OF THE OTHER VITAL INSTRUMENT READINGS. *TR

ON A SEPARATE OCCASION, ALL FOUR DOORS EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE. WHILE AN OCCUPANT WAS SEATED IN THE PASSENGER SEAT, HE LEANED UP AGAINST THE DOOR AND IT OPENED. THE OCCUPANT FELL OUT OF THE VEHICLE, EVEN THOUGH THE DOOR WAS COMPLETELY SHUT AT THE TIME. THE DOORS WOULD NOT LOCK OR UNLOCK. THE VIN WAS UNABLE TO BE ENTERED. I RECENTLY HAD MY VEHICLE IN MY SERVICE DEPT. FOR AN ON-GOING PROBLEM OF WHICH HERITAGE GMC COULD NOT REPAIR. FROM A STANDSTILL, WHEN I WOULD ACCELERATE, THE VEHICLE WOULD LOSE POWER AND NOT MOVE AFTER ABOUT 20 FEET OR SO AND A ?TRACTION ACTIVE? MESSAGE WOULD APPEAR ON THE DISPLAY. THIS WAS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AS THE VEHICLE WOULD END UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WITH LOSS OF POWER AND CARS BEHIND ME WILL ALMOST RE END MY CAR. IT IS AN INTERMITTENT HAPPENING 6 OR MORE TIME DAILY, WOULD HAPPEN WHEN I WOULD DRIVE FROM A STOP SIGN OR RED LIGHT. TO REGAIN POWER, YOU HAD TO LET OFF ON THE GAS PEDDLE AND THE DRIVE WOULD RE-ENGAGE. WE HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS FOR A WHILE AND ALL THE GM VEHICLES RUN THIS TYPE OF SENSOR COMBO ON ALL THE WHEELS TELLING THE COMPUTER WHEN TO APPLY BRAKES OR POWER TO THE WHEELS, THESE GET DIRTY FROM ROAD SALT IN UPPER STATES AND GM WILL ONLY ADDRESS 2002 CARS, BUT THE 2002-2005 LOOK ALL ALIKE, THIS ALSO APPLIES TO REGULAR CARS, AFTER DOING A SEARCH THERE ARE ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVING MY SAME PROBLEM, THIS IS AS SAFETY HAZARD AND IS GOING TO CAUSE A FATALITY....... *TR

TRACTION ACTIVE APPEARS ON DISPLAY - WHILE STOPPED AT A VERY DANGEROUS INTERSECTION, I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR ONLY TO HAVE THE TRACTION ACTIVE LIGHT APPEAR ON THE DISPLAY AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE. I HAD TO LET OFF THE GAS AND THEN PRESS IT AGAIN IN ORDER FOR THE VEHICLE TO MOVE. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN AS I AM UNABLE TO ACCELERATE AT AN APPROPRIATE SPEED IN ORDER TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT WHILE TAKING OFF FROM A STOP. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED HIM TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE HYDRO BOOST FAILED. THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PAY $861 TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE MECHANIC INFORMED HIM THAT HE COULD HAVE RUN OUT OF POWER STEERING AND BRAKE FLUID, AND THE SEAL FAILED AND WAS LEAKING. THE FAILURE COULD HAVE CAUSED A CRASH DUE TO THE LOSS OF THE FLUIDS IN THE VEHICLE AND THE INABILITY TO BRAKE. THE BRAKES AND THE STEERING ARE ONE UNIT. A GMC REPRESENTATIVE STATED THAT HE WOULD CALL THE CONTACT IN 24 HOURS TO DISCUSS WHETHER OR NOT THEY WILL PAY FOR THE PARTS OR A PORTION OF THE REPAIRS.
