Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
0
InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

  • Engine150.0%

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

That does not guarantee a specific vehicle is unaffected — recalls are issued against VINs, and new campaigns are announced regularly. Check a VIN on NHTSA.gov.

THE CRUISE CONTROL ON MY 2013 HARLEY DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE HAS AT TIMES LOCKED THE THROTTLE IN THE FULL OPEN POSITION AND AT OTHER TIMES IT HAS JUST COMPLETELY SHUT THE THROTTLE DOWN. IT HAS DONE THIS WITHOUT WARNING. THIS FIRST HAPPENED WHILE ON AN INTERSTATE AT APPROXIMATELY 73 MPH, THE THROTTLE WENT TO FULL OPEN. SINCE THEN I HAVE EXPERIENCE SITUATIONS WHERE THE THROTTLE JUST SHUTS COMPLETELY DOWN WHILE THE CRUISE CONTROL IS ENGAGED. OTHER TIMES IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO EVEN GET THE CRUISE CONTROL TO RESPOND IN ANY MANNER. TWO DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS HAVE LOOKED AT THIS BIKE AT SAY THEY CAN FIND NO PROBLEM. THERE IS A PROBLEM! THIS PROBLEM/SITUATION IS AND/OR COULD BE AN EXTREMELY SERIOUS AND LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM/SITUATION GIVEN THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES AND/OR IF THE WRONG PERSON WERE TO BE EXPOSED TO IT. THE LOCKING OF THE THROTTLE TO FULL OPEN AND/OR THE COMPLETE SHUTTING DOWN OF THE THROTTLE, EITHER ONE AT ANY GIVEN POINT UNDER ANY GIVEN TRAFFIC OR HIGHWAY SITUATION COULD LEAD TO EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND LIFE THREATENING POSSIBILITY. THINKING THAT ONE OWNS A MOTORCYCLE WITH AN OPERATIONAL CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM AND THEN FINDING OUT THAT THE SYSTEM IS LESS THAN TOTALLY FUNCTIONAL AND MAKING THAT DISCOVERY WHILE ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHILE IN TRAFFIC IS LESS THAN REASSURING. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO AND HARLEY DAVIDSON NEEDS TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT AND PROVIDE A REMEDY.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
