Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: HARLEY-DAVIDSON IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010 FXDF MOTORCYCLES WITH FORK LEG ASSEMBLIES (LH P/N 48622-08, RH P/N 48623-08) MANUFACTURED FROM JANUARY 29 THROUGH FEBRUARY 9, 2010. THESE FORK LEG ASSEMBLIES MAY HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY ASSEMBLED USING THE WRONG SPRINGS.
The risk: MOTORCYCLES CONTAINING THE WRONG SPRINGS WILL HAVE REDUCED SUSPENSION EFFECTIVENESS WHICH MAY RESULT IN REDUCED TRACTION ON IRREGULAR ROAD SURFACES, AND WILL ALSO HAVE A DIFFERENT LEAN ANGLE WHEN PARKED ON THE SIDE STAND, POSSIBLY AFFECTING PARKING STABILITY. THIS CONDITION MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy: HARLEY-DAVIDSON WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE AFFECTED MOTORCYCLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 26, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HARLEY-DAVIDSON AT 1-414-343-4056.

WHEN RIDING IN THE RAIN ON MY 2010 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FAT BOB, MY TAIL LIGHT HAS FILLED WITH WATER, AND THE BULB FAILED (STOP AND TAIL). WATER GETS INTO THIS AREA BETWEEN THE REAR FENDER AND THE LICENSE PLATE/TAIL LIGHT BRACKET FROM THE INSIDE. THERE IS QUITE A LARGE AREA HERE TO FILL WITH WATER, WHICH GOES UNNOTICED. THE DAMPNESS BEHIND THE TAIL LIGHT HAS CAUSED MAJOR CORROSION IN THE WIRING AND MAKES THE TURN SIGNALS COME ON BY THEMSELVES DUE TO SHORTING OUT A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD, INTO WHICH THE TAIL LIGHT AND OTHER COMPONENTS PLUG INTO. THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM ALSO OCCURRED ON MY 2008 MODEL (OF THE SAME MODEL MOTORCYCLE), AND I AM AWARE OF SIMILAR ISSUES ON THE 2011 CROSS BONES MODEL (WHICH SHARES A SIMILAR REAR FENDER/TAIL LAMP DESIGN). THESE MOTORCYCLES ARE MANUFACTURED AND SOLD BOTH IN THE USA AND THE 'INTERNATIONAL' MARKET, WHOSE VERSIONS HAVE IDENTICAL COMPONENTS IN THIS AREA. I BOUGHT A 2010 MODEL (NEW) DUE TO MULTIPLE REPETITIVE FAILURES OF THE PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD DESCRIBED ABOVE ON THE 2008 MODEL CAUSED BY THE SAME ISSUES OF WATER INGRESS, AND WITHIN WEEKS THE SAME PROBLEM HAD APPEARED ON THE 2010 VEHICLE. BOTH MOTORCYCLES HAD BEEN TAKEN IN TO AN OFFICIAL DEALER WHO REPLACED THE CIRCUIT BOARDS (ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS ON THE 2008 VEHICLE) BUT THIS DOES NOT STOP THE WATER GETTING INTO THE AREA BEHIND THE TAIL LIGHT IN THE FIRST PLACE. *TR
