Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

EQUIPMENT

2,798 units potentially affected
The defect: Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) is recalling all model year 2012 and certain model year 2013 VRSCDX motorcycles manufactured from June 14, 2011, through August 1, 2012. The license plate bracket assembly's mounting screws may loosen and the assembly may separate from the rear fender. This condition may lead to contact with the rear tire which could cause the license plate bracket to rotate, possibly damaging the rear brake line.
The risk: If the license plate bracket contact with the rear brake line remains undetected, it may affect rear brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash, which could lead to injury or death of the rider.
The remedy: Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and repair any affected motorcycles free of charge. The safety recall began on November 6, 2012. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson at 1-414-343-4056.

THE NIGHT ROD SPECIAL FUEL GUAGE DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY. AFTER FILLING UP, IT SHOWED LESS THAN 1/2 TANK IN CITY DRIVING. AFTER DRIVING A SHORT DISTANCE AND RESTARTING, IT SHOWED ABOUT 3/4 FULL. AS THE DRIVE CONTINUED ON A HIGHWAY, IT INCREASED TO POSSIBLY THE CORRECT FUEL LEVEL. AFTER STOPPING WITH APPROXIMATELY 1/2 OF A TANK, ONCE RESTARTED, IT DROPPED RAPIDLY TO EMPTY, FUEL LIGHT CAME ON, AND REMAINING DISTANCE STATED ZERO. I IMMEDIATELY WENT TO A GAS STATION TO FILL UP. ONLY 2.5 GALLONS OF THE 5 GAL TANK WERE USED. I HAVE READ ON MULTIPLE SITES AND FORUMS THAT HARLEY-DAVIDSONS, IN PARTICULAR THE VRODS, FUEL GUAGE ARE NOTORIOUS FOR WORKING IMPROPERLY. THIS IS A SAFETY MATTER AND MUST BE FIXED BY HD.
