What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2014 Honda CR-V, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
This make and model Honda with a 2.4L engine have several known defects which brings potential harm and high operational and repair costs to its owners. Honda is well aware of the engine problems but refuses to issue recalls to correct the problem. Two of the major problems are: 1. due to a design error, the engine burns excessive amounts of oil, and 2. Honda installed a defective VTC Actuator in this engine. Either problem can cause the engine to suddenly sieze/fail which could lead to serious injury or loss of life. I purchased a used 2014 Honda CR-V from a Honda dealer in 2022 with about 50,000 mi. After a short time owning the vehicle I realized that the engine was burning excessive oil (about 2 quarts every 2 to 3 weeks). When I discussed this issue with my local Honda dealer, they told me that according to a Honda Service Bulliten, my car was not losing oil at a rate that warranted repair. I've owned around 10 Hondas in my life and I've never had a car burn oil where I had to add ANY oil between oil changes. So, burning multiple quarts of oil a month is EXTREMELY UNUSUAL and should have been repaired by Honda! The 2nd problem, defective VTC Actuators, actually may be related to the 1st problem due to a constant fluctuation of the oil level, and lack of oil. The defective VTC Actuators lead to a stretched/worn Timing Chain which can cause engine failure at any time and any place. After experiencing a loud rattling coming from my engine on start-up for some time, I just had several dashboard lights come on. Running a scan on the vehicle it showed a P0341 code. I took my car to my local Honda Dealer where they informed my that I had to replace the stretched Timing Chain and failed/defective VTC Actuator at a cost of over $2600. I believe that fraud was committed by Honda from the day I purchased the vehicle as Honda was aware of both significant engine problems and did not inform us a unexpecting Buyers.

Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The tailgate door doesn’t open normally sometime I have to push the button more than 10 times then it open but most of the time it doesn’t open.I use this car as a spare or for emergency only so I just wait for Honda to recall, hopefully I don’t want to spend a lot of money to fix because the warranty has expired (41 months but only 25000 miles)but now I use this car every day
Noticed one day that passenger seat had burn marks. Have smelt on occasion what seemed to be burning smells in the past. Don’t use the seat heater there since that was noticed. This is a danger.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
I own a 2014 Honda CR-V. Since around November 2022 I have repeatedly experienced an intermittent “bounce” or shudder when accelerating, especially around 20–25 mph and sometimes at higher speeds (around 45 mph and above). The vehicle feels like it briefly loses power or slips before catching again, and the check-engine light has come on and off during this period. I took the vehicle to Stockton Honda (CA) multiple times and consistently reported this bounce/shudder on take-off. Each time, the focus was on brakes, rotors, tires, or other maintenance items. I was never told there might be an engine or timing-chain issue or that the vehicle could be unsafe to drive. The bounce/shudder never went away. I have also been involved in multiple low-speed collisions while taking off from a stop in the past few years, and I am concerned that this hesitation/loss of power may have contributed. In late 2025, Honda of Elk Grove performed a full diagnostic, retrieved a P031 code, and told me the most likely cause is a timing-chain problem. I was advised that the vehicle is not recommended to be driven until the timing chain is replaced because the engine could be severely damaged or fail while driving. The technician refused to take the car on the freeway due to safety concerns. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA is aware that a possible timing-chain defect or failure in 2014 Honda CR-V vehicles can present as a bounce/shudder at low speeds during acceleration, with potential loss of power and increased risk of rear-end collisions, and that this condition may be missed or misdiagnosed by dealers for an extended period.
Purchased our 2014 CR-V [XXX], used one owner, 55301 mileage. Very little driving the next three years due to the pandemic. Summer of 2023 we were driving from Buffalo to [XXX] , first 30 miles, severe hesitation, amber lights on, until reaching 70mph. Hesitation stopped but lights stayed on. By August the TPMS indicator, malfunction indicator lamp and other lights came on, again. We reset according to the manual, but this was just the beginning of this process happening over and over again. During dealer testing Code PO 341 came up. Had it tested at another place before taking it to West Herr Honda and was told needed Timing chain replacement with VTC. This was done at a cost of $2232.06 with car mileage of 63159. We were sad and disappointed. Research shows that Honda is very much aware of over 500 plus recorded problems with the 2014 CR-V not to mention unreported problems. The model should be recalled before lives are lost. Car still hesitates but evidently due to a different problem. Goodday, I bought the car a month ago from a dealer on terms. The first time i drove car and turning right its sounds like the wheel or something is about to break off. Like maybe the axel. Extremly loud. Scary loud. No matter speed, turning right does this. I returned car to dealer. They say the router had rust and was corrected. I dont drive the car alot, but again today its making that noise. That pedestrians look worried.
From the moment we drove off the lot, this car had had one issue after another, nearly cause me to lose my job because I couldn’t make it to work due to the car being busted. It was getting really bad MPGs, they said it’s fine. It started overheating, they said the coolant fans and radiator cap were what was wrong, for a long while now the Tire pressure management system has been ON, 24/7, my tires are not low. I bought new tires for the CRV. The mechanics don’t really seem interested in fixing anything.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.

The contact owns a 2014 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving at 25-50 MPH, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to respond as needed. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact's son test-drove the vehicle and experienced the same failure. The contact attempted to depress the accelerator pedal and believed that there was no gasket on the fuel pump. The vehicle was taken to a dealer however, the dealer could not recreate the failure with the accelerator. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owned a 2014 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 MPH on a two-lane road, the contact pressed the brake pedal to avoid rear-ending the vehicle in front. The contact indicated that when pressing the brake pedal, the driver's air bag erroneously deployed, causing the driver to lose control of the steering and crash into a guardrail, where the vehicle came to a stop. The vehicle in front was not crashed into and left the scene after witnessing the crash into the guardrail. The contact sustained severe facial and oral injuries along with a concussion, chest and arm bruising, which required medical treatment. A police report was filed at the scene. The vehicle was destroyed and towed away. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The dealer was not contacted. The contact was also concerned that metal fragments may have exploded from the air bag deployment. No additional information was available. The failure mileage was 70,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while her boyfriend was driving through a construction zone at 55 MPH, an aggressive driver hit the front passenger side of the vehicle and drove off. The air bags did not deploy upon impact and the seat belts did secure the driver as needed. The contact's boyfriend sustained bruises on the neck, lower back, and left arm; the contact's boyfriend had yet to seek medical attention. The whereabouts of the other driver were unknown. The vehicle was towed to an impound lot. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle was totaled due to the accident. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000. The contact did not attempt to file a complaint online.

My 2014 Honda CRV 's entire sunroof glass shattered while parked in the sun. You can see from the images I've attached below that was no impact or other cause Please let me know what steps I can take to have the Honda dealership service department repair and address this issue. As of now, the shattered glass has not fallen into the car but I'm scared that it will anytime. I can feel the sharp edges of the glass as I run my finger on the glass. The heat on the driver side blows cold air. The windshield on winter does not defrost completely due to cold air on that side it is the heater core that is blocked for the driver side. Passenger side has no issue with heat. I’ve been informed that this is a heater core issue and needs to be flushed and have build up removed on heater core. My vehicle has only 40,000 miles.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
I am the original owner of 2014 Honda CRV , color of the car is Pearl White, NH-603 PX, right after manufacturing guarantee, paint started to peel, top, back door, complete passenger side. Paint is bubbling and peeling off. I see many same issues on Honda CRV on the road. I believe this is a quality issue and if there is a defected paint, it can be other defective parts too. I called Honda dealer many times and raised this issue and answer was “there is no recall”. I went to multiple body paint centers, they all confirmed that Honda CRV Pearl White paint is defected paint, didn’t sticked to the body properly.
Honda CRV was purchased in New York in 2014 and has been registered in Texas since 2023. The car has approximately 76600 miles (substantially lower than 132,000 miles average mileage). According to Team Gillman Honda Dealership. The car has undergone severe rusting leading to coolant leak. I was asked to replace the radiator, hoses, welding of convertor and exhaust pipes. The bill exceeds 5000 USD/- (according to the dealer). Rooster car care has quoted a 6000 USD/- for similar fixes. So far, I have already spent 550 USD/- and the repairs have failed Honda did issue a recall for 564,000 Honda CRV's made between 2007-2011 driven in salt belt states. This information is publicly available.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2014 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the front headlights failed to function as intended. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic; however, no cause for the failure was found. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the headlights were replaced four times within one year. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. The VIN was not available.
Inferior light for night driving. I avoid night driving but there are times when I must. Had to take a pet recently at for emergency help
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
There is a rattling noise coming from the engine area at extreme cold startups since I had the car at 24,000 miles on it. When having the car parked with the emergency brake on at an incline and after leaving it ther for a few days, after I press the release on the brake after starting the car, the emergency brake sticks and the car won't move forward when accelerating or backward when releasing the brakes or accelerating. I have to repeatedly press and release the emergency brake to allow the car to release the brake from the wheel for the car to move forward. There is repeatedly a build up of rust on the rear wheels when the car is exposed to humid and wet conditions due to some flaw in the design, and it causes the car the have a loud thumping noise when applying the breaks . I have had to get the rear brakes refinished or shaved down to smooth them out repeatedly.
Pulling into a parking space, when hitting my brakes, the engine suddenly accelerated and no, I was not pushing both the gas pedal and brake at the same time. In doing a web search, I found many instances of other CRV owners having the same issue...sudden acceleration when braking
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.

Oil Dilution (gas mixing with oil) caused engine to overheat, making my car abruptly breakdown on a busy interstate and we were nearly rear ended because of it. Now I need a full engine replacement. Car is low mileage.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2014 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving at approximately 30-40 MPH, the steering wheel would vibrate. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact initially notified the manufacturer of the failure. The manufacturer informed the contact that they could not assist as the VIN was not included in a recall. The contact then notified the local dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Honda C-RV. The contact stated that it was two components (upper control arm) that seemed to be a part of his steering, one on each side, that appeared to be rusted. The contact stated that he had no issues with his vehicle currently, but was concerned about his safety in the future since it is a part of the steering system. The contact stated that he contacted the dealer who advised him he would have to pay out of pocket to get his vehicle diagnosed and that there were no recalls concerning the vehicle or steering. The failure mileage was 40,000.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.

My 2014 CRV has 83,131 miles and I am a careful driver and like to keep my vehicle in top shape. The service done was replaced outer tie rod ends that were cracked and I could have lost control , replaced front lower control arms, replaced front struts, replaced rear sway bar bushings, reseal coolant passage housing , head gaskets, my vehicle could have quit in traffic. The top of my CRV has paint faded and gone to a white powder look. There are things that a car with low miles driven carefully and taken very good car of should not be happening. There should be recalls because there are issues with timing chains and fuel system. I am scared to drive it anymore. I won't stay loyal to Honda now and I am very disappointed that they know these issues and haven't attempted to fix them.
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
