Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component
Data refreshed
What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2008 Honda Fit, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
LOST CONTROL OF STEERING AND VEERED INTO LIGHT POST. THE POST WAS IMPACTED AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH. THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WAS SMOKE AND GUN POWDER SMELL. THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS. THE AIRBAG OBVIOUSLY FIRED, BUT DID NOT DEPLOY.
MY AIR BAGS LIGHT CAME ON. TESTING SHOWED AIR BAG MODULE NEEDED. IT TURNED MY AIRBAGS OFF. UNSAFE TO DRIVE. 2007 & 2009 HAS AN AIR BAG RECALL. WHAT ABOUT 2008?
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
My Bumper snapped off with going down a driveway. It’s made of plastic and it’s broken and need to be replaced. This is an ongoing issue with this vehicle. Every Honda fit I see on the road has this issue. This is dangerous and could cause an accident.
I AM THE ORIGINAL AND ONLY OWNER OF THIS 2008 HONDA FIT SPORT. THIS CAR HAS NOT BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENTS SO THE INTEGRITY OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE SOUND. BUT IT IS NOT. I AM NOT SURE WHEN THE ISSUE BEGAN BUT I HAVE KNOWN ABOUT IT FOR A FEW YEARS AND DIDN'T REALIZE THAT SO MANY OTHER 2008 HONDA FIT OWNERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. SO, I AM JUST NOW MAKING THIS COMPLAINT. MY CAR, JUST AS MANY OTHER 2008 HONDA FIT SPORT OWNERS HAVE REPORTED, HAS A STRUCTURAL DEFICIENCY SOMEWHERE THAT ALLOWS WATER INTO THE VEHICLE IN AT LEAST TWO SEPARATE ENTRY POINTS. WATER POOLS IN THE LOCATION WHERE THE SPARE TIRE IS LOCATED. NOT JUST A LITTLE BIT, NOT JUST A DROP OR TWO...BUT A "POOL" OF WATER. SECONDLY, WATER IS GETTING INTO THE RIGHT REAR PASSENGER FLOORBOARD. THE CARPET IS CONSTANTLY WET AND MUSHY. MY CAR SMELLS TERRIBLE DUE TO SITTING WATER (SMELLS LIKE RUSTY DANK WATER?) AND VERY LIKELY MOLD GROWTH. THERE HAVE BEEN SO MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE ON THESE CARS I CANNOT BELIEVE HONDA HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL. HONDA EITHER NEEDS TO MAKE THESE CARS STRUCTURALLY SOUND WITH A REPAIR OR SOMEHOW MAKE IT RIGHT WITH THE OWNERS BY WAY OF A MONETARY EQUIVALENT TO THE DEPRECIATION OF THE VEHICLE DUE TO THIS STRUCTURAL ISSUE. HOW IN THE WORLD CAN I SELL THIS CAR WITH THIS PROBLEM?
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2008 Honda Fit. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. While driving approximately 55 MPH or faster, there was a misfire coming from the engine. The contact stated while driving at slower speeds, the vehicle was wobbling. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that there was a misfire coming from all 4-cylinders. The mechanic test-drove the vehicle and the passenger’s side front axle shaft detached from the vehicle. Due to the failure, the dealer was unable to further diagnose the vehicle to determine what parts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted; however, the contact was unable to speak with the mechanic. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 138,500. The VIN was unavailable.
The contact owns a 2008 Honda Fit. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated continuously. The vehicle was able to restart after waiting. The failure recurred four times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the ignition coils needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The contact mentioned the vehicle was shuddering while accelerating the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the cylinders, valves, spark plugs, and head gasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
My Honda Fit with an automatic transmission experienced a driveshaft failure due to corrosion in August 2018. At that time, Honda had announced a recall for similar driveshaft corrosion failures affecting manual‑transmission Honda Fits, but no recall existed for automatic‑transmission vehicles. Because there was no recall for my vehicle configuration, and no notice from Honda, I had the vehicle repaired at an independent repair shop at my own expense. Honda later expanded the recall to include automatic‑transmission Honda Fits in June 2019. However, I never received a mailed recall notification while I owned the vehicle. I sold the vehicle in February 2020, before Honda mailed recall notices. I only became aware that my vehicle was included in the automatic‑transmission recall later, while researching issues related to a different Honda Fit I currently own. At that point, I learned that my prior driveshaft failure matched the recalled defect. Honda is now denying reimbursement for the recall‑related repair because they say they must inspect the vehicle to confirm whether it was equipped with a factory dynamic damper. Honda has also stated, however, that it does not have its own records confirming whether my VIN included this component in the build at the factory. The failure occurred before the recall existed for automatic‑transmission vehicles, and Honda failed to notify me of the recall while I owned the car. The vehicle is no longer available for inspection due to this lack of notice. Denying reimbursement under these circumstances shifts Honda’s own delayed recall, delayed notification, and incomplete factory records onto the consumer. I am concerned that Honda’s recall reimbursement process unfairly denies reimbursement for pre‑recall failures when the manufacturer lacks build records and notification was delayed
Id like for my car to get assessed for any of the 8 recalled items that pop up in your system.. I bought this car from a dealership and I don't believe that they did anything for it to fix the recall problems
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2008 HONDA FIT. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ACTIVATED, A TRACTOR TRAILER PULLED IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED INSTEAD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED A SECOND TIME AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE CRASHED THROUGH SEVERAL BUSHES IN THE MEDIAN OF THE HIGHWAY AND CAME TO A STOP ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY TOWARDS ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INJURED AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SHIFT LEVER WAS IN THE PARK POSITION; HOWEVER, THE CRUISE CONTROL INDICATOR WAS STILL ILLUMINATED AND THE ENGINE REVVED INDEPENDENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY DEEMED THE VEHICLE DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. From owner reports, verbatim
TAKATA RECALL : MY 2008 HONDA FIT WAS TRAVELING AT 15 MPH AND WENT INTO A POLICE K-9 UNIT 'ELVIS'. THE AIR BAG VIRULENTLY EXPLODED ON MY JAW AND CAUSED MY TEETH TO BIT MY TONGUE. THE POLICEMAN MISTOOK THE INJURY FOR A SEIZURE AND I LOST MY LICENSE INDEFINITELY. I WAS TAKE TO THE HOSPITAL AGAINST MY WILL AND GIVEN 10,000 DOLLARS IN SERVICES I DIDN'T WANT OR NEED DUE TO THE AIR BAG. HONDA AND TAKATA AND NHTSA NEED TO COME CLEAN AND PROTECT THE PUBLIC FROM THIS DANGEROUS DEFECT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HONDA FIT. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER AFTER BEING STOPPED OR MAKING A TURN. DURING COLD TEMPURATURES, THE FAILURE WAS MORE COMMON. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE REPLICATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000. THE VIN WAS NOT PROVIDED.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
Above mentioned Honda Fit Vin number JHMGD38678S043570 had same issue with low beam headlight recall (TSB 10-082 low beam headlight recall) Low beam headlight do not work. Car was sent to Pohanka dealership for repair. "Found a break in wire where connector was installed." I have documentation attesting to this. I am not denying that switch was bad, but Honda is charging labor for the obvious recall repair that was incorrectly performed. I would like a partial refund for the labor they are charging for the time to repair the recall correction. Honda is denying the claim saying it is "wear and tear".
The contact owns a 2008 Honda Fit. The contact stated that while driving, the low-beam headlight and fog lamps became inoperable without warning. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and diagnosed with a defective connector switch that needed to be replaced. Additionally, the connector was melted. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated the failure was similar to NHTSA Campaign Number: 10V624000 (Exterior Lighting). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim

The contact owns a 2008 Honda Fit. The contact stated that while turning into a parking lot approaching a parking space without warning the vehicle accelerated forward. The contact slammed on the brake pedal, however the vehicle failed to stop. The contact depressed the brake pedal again and the vehicle came to a complete stop. The contact shifted the vehicle gear into park. The vehicle has not been diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure however no further assistance was taken and the manufacturer informed the contact that the warranties had expired, and to contact NHTSA to log a complaint. No dealer was contacted. The contact mentioned NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V770000 (Power train) as a possible solution to the failure however, the VIN was not included. The failure was approximately 106,340.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
POWER STEERING INTERMITTENTLY STOPS WORKING. FAULT CODE 37-1 APPEARS.
I RECEIVED THE NOTICE "WARRANTY EXTENSION: ELECTRIC POWER STEERING WITH DTC 32-09 OR 61-04" FROM HONDA IN OCTOBER 2014 THAT STATES, "ON SOME 2007-2008 FIT VEHICLES, THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING MAY FEEL HEAVIER THAN NORMAL OR IS HARD TO TURN, PARTICULARLY WHEN THE VEHICLE IS NOT MOVING. TO ENSURE YOUR CONFIDENCE IN OUR PRODUCT, AMERICAN HONDA IS EXTENDING THE WARRANTY OF THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING TO 10 YEARS FROM THE ORIGINAL DATE OF PURCHASE, OR 150,000 MILES, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST." IT STATES,"NO ACTION IS REQUIRED ON YOUR PART UNLESS YOU EXPERIENCE A PROBLEM." IT STATES," IF THE STEERING FEELS HEAVIER THAN NORMAL, CONTACT ANY AUTHORIZED HONDA DEALER FOR AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE IT REPAIRED." IN TWO INSTANCES I HAD EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM. EACH OF THESE EVENTS OCCURRED WHEN I WAS TURNING INTO AN INTERSECTION. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP, AND I WAS UNABLE TO TURN IT AT ALL. I WAS AFRAID THIS WAS GOING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT IN THE INTERSECTION. I TURNED THE IGNITION OFF, AND THEN BACK ON, AND THE ERROR WENT AWAY I HAVE NOTIFIED TROY HONDA AND LAFONTAINE HONDA THAT I HAD EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM TWICE, BUT THEY HAVE BOTH TOLD ME SINCE THERE IS NO ERROR CODE CURRENTLY, THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. WHEN I CONTACTED HONDA CUSTOMER SERVICE, (800) 999-1009, THEY SAID THE SAME THING. I AM SURPRISED HONDA WOULD SEND OUT THIS WARRANTY EXTENSION, THEN REFUSE TO FIX IT WHEN I TAKE MY CAR IN FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE.
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
2008 HONDA FIT BASE MODEL: FLOOR OF BACK SEAT AND THE CARGO AREA BEHIND BACK SEAT IS WET, AND IS NOW GROWING MOLD. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW SO MUCH MOISTURE/WATER IS GETTING INTO THE CARPET. I AM ALSO CONCERNED THAT THE FLOORS WILL RUST AS WELL. SERIOUSLY, HONDA STEP UP AND ISSUE A RECALL AND FIX THIS ISSUE!! I WILL BE FILING A COMPLAINT WITH THE AG'S OFFICE!
LAST YEAR OUR DRIVER SIDE DOOR LOCK SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING - COULD NOT INSERT THE KEY. THERE WAS NOTHING JAMMED OR STUCK INSIDE. TODAY THE SAME THING HAPPENED WITH THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR LUCK - WE CAN'T INSERT THE KEY. NOW THE ONLY DOOR THAT WORKS IS THE TRUNK. *TR
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
* TIRES, SEVERE CRACKING (SEE PICTURES) * BRAND: PRIMEWELLPZ900 (SOLD BY FIRESTONE, MADE IN INDONESIA) * DOT# 9UH76AA5211 * INSTALLED 2012-05-26
HAVE HAD TWO BLOWOUTS ON THE SAME WHEEL (REAR PASSENGER) WITH DIFFERENT TIRE BRANDS IN LESS THAN THREE YEARS OF OWNING THE CAR (BLOWOUTS WERE 16 MONTHS APART, MAYBE 8K MILES). THE HONDA FIT IS NOT CAPABLE OF DRIVING ON HIGHWAYS! I WAS TRAVELING AT 75 MPH, THE TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON THE DASH, MY CAR AND STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO VIBRATE/JERK, CAR FISHTAILED, AND I WAS THROWN PERPENDICULAR INTO TRAFFIC! I WAS LUCKY TO NOT BE HIT BY OTHER DRIVERS ON THE HIGHWAY AS THEY WERE ABLE TO STOP (SECOND TIME, THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS BEHIND ME). THIS HAPPENED TWICE! THESE WHEELS ARE NOT SAFE! NHTSA NEEDS TO LAUNCH A FULL INVESTIGATION. *TR

CHECK ENGINE SIGN ALL THE TIME. SEAT BELT NOT RELEASE AUTOMATICALLY, WHINE DRIVE ON THE RAIN AND SNOW NOT SEE CLEARLY WIPER DOESN'T WORK GOOD. SOME TIME TPMS SIGN SHOW UP
I OWN A 2008 HONDA FIT (MANUAL TRANSMISSION). BEGINNING LAST WINTER (JANUARY 2014), ICE FORMS ON THE INTERIOR OF THE WINDOWS OF THE CAR (WINDSHIELD, DRIVER SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE). THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AS IT LIMITS/BLOCKS VISIBILITY. THE WINDSHIELD CLEARS AFTER RUNNING THE HEAT, BUT THE SIDE WINDOWS DO NOT. AT STOP SIGNS, WHEN IT IS BELOW FREEZING OUT, I HAVE TO ROLL DOWN THE WINDOWS IN ORDER TO SEE IF CARS ARE COMING. I HAVE NOT BROUGHT THIS IN TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, BUT WILL CONSIDER DOING SO THIS WINTER. SHOULDN'T THERE BE A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM? THANK YOU. *TR

IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TREAD ON THE TIRES SEPARATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE DOOR FAILED ALLOWING WATER TO ENTER AND THAT THE WHEEL WAS STEEL AND NOT STANDARD FOR WARM CLIMATE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 71,000.

Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
When the car is started, it cranks with a bit of hesitation. It then has a rough idle. After putting the car in gear and going, it will just shut off while it's in drive. I then have to place the car in neutral while it's still moving to start it again and then quickly put it into drive. It does this the first 10 minutes of driving and then it stops. Until you let it sit for awhile and then it repeats this same issue.
1) VEHICLE ENGINE HAS TO WARM UP FOR SEVERAL MOMENTS IF STATIONERY FOR LONGER THAN A FEW HOURS (REGARDLESS OF OUTDOOR TEMPERATURE); 2) TRANSMISSION SLIPPING OR PISTONS NOT FIRING WHILE IN OPERATION-WHETHER IN TOWN OR HIGHWAY; 3) IF VEHICLE IDLES, ENGINE SHUTS OFF AND UPON RESTART, HAS TO REACH 2000 RPMS TO BEGIN BE ABLE TO PUT IT INTO DRIVE. VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN IN NUMEROUS TIMES TO MULTIPLE HONDA SERVICE STATIONS AND INDEPENDENT MECHANICS WITH NO POSITIVE RESOLUTION. WORK DONE INCLUDED: CRANK SENSOR, COIL PACKS REPLACED, STARTER REPLACED, FLUIDS FLUSHED, VALVES ADJUSTED. CODES PULLED HAVE NOT PINPOINTED THE ISSUE NOR DOES ANY MECHANIC HAVE AN ANSWER. ONLINE FORUM SEARCHES APPEAR TO HAVE A NUMBER OF OTHER OWNERS WITH ALL MODEL YEARS OF HONDA FITS WITH SAME/SIMILAR ISSUES.

AIR CONDITIONING FAILED. TOOK VEHICLE TO HONDA DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT DAMAGE TO CONDENSER WAS CAUSED BY "ROAD DEBRIS" AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. $800+ TO REPAIR, WITH ONLY 22,568 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. *TR

Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY CLUTCH WENT OUT TWICE IN UNDER 17,000 MILES. DRIVEN A MANUAL TRANSMISSION FOR ABOUT 20 YEARS. FIRST CLUTCH WENT AT 6011 MILES (JANUARY 30, 2008). CLUTCH WOULD NOT ENGAGE ON A BUSY HIGHWAY IN LA. I WAS LUCKY THAT I DID NOT HAVE ANY VEHICLES BEHIND ME. HONDA REPLACED THE CLUTCH, THE FLYWHEEL, THE PRESSURE PLATE, AND BOTH BEARINGS UNDER THE HEADING OF "GOODWILL". THEY CLAIMED IT WAS USER WEAR. AT 6000 MILES? THE SERVICE CONSULTANT SAID THAT IT WAS THE WORST WORN CLUTCH HE HAD EVER SEEN... IT WAS "BLUE". CLUTCH BEGAN SLIPPING AGAIN AT 17,800 MILES. TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY AGAIN BLAMED ME FOR THE WEAR. COULD NOT TELL ME WHY IT WAS MY FAULT. THE CLUTCH DISC SHOWED UNEVEN WEAR. WHEN I ASKED IF THEY INSPECTED THE TIRES TO SHOW THAT THE CAR WAS "OPERATED PROPERLY" THEY SAID THAT THE USE OF THE CLUTCH DID NOT EFFECT THE TIRES. WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT HE SENT PICTURES IN TO A HONDA REP. WHEN I ASKED TO SEE THE PICTURES 7 DAYS LATER I WAS SENT ONE PARTIAL IMAGE OF MY CLUTCH, WHICH SHOWED OBVIOUS UNUSUAL WEAR. THE IMAGE WAS TIME-STAMPED 6 DAYS AFTER I WAS TOLD THE PHOTO(S) OF THE CAR WERE INSPECTED BY AN AMERICAN HONDA REP. HONDA DENIES ANY RESPONSIBILITY ON THEIR FAULTY MACHINE EVEN AFTER A CASE MANAGER SAID IT WAS "UNLIKELY" MY FAULT, BUT "POSSIBLE". I COULD GROW A THIRD ARM FROM MY FOREHEAD... IT IS "POSSIBLE" BUT "UNLIKELY". HONDA WANTS ME TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS AND TEAR DOWN COSTS. I DO NOT MERELY WANT THE CAR REPAIRED. THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE OF MONEY. IF I AM ON THE HIGHWAY AND A THIRD CLUTCH GOES AGAIN, WITH MY TWO KIDS IN THE CAR, INJURY OR EVEN DEATH IS POSSIBLE. AFTER 14 DAYS OF DISCUSSION AND NO CAR, OR ONE EVEN SUPPLIED, AMERICAN HONDA AGREED TO REOPEN THE CASE AFTER NOTICE OF ARBITRATION AND A POTENTIAL LAWSUIT. STILL WAITING FOR AN ANSWER. *TR
