What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 Honda Odyssey, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

The incidents of sudden acceleration while braking on this model are vast. My van has experienced several sudden un-commanded acceleration incidents while braking starting in 2022. Honda lawyers are in control and thus no technical explanation. My last event was on [XXX] post hurricane Helene in Asheville N.C. The response of the NHTSA is needed due to people of modest means need to keep their car as long as possible. This requires honest service information from Honda. Honda has reaped a well deserved dividend cultivating the belief that their product with careful use can last 20 years or more. Honda does not deserve to reap this benefit while failing to execute an honest service which creates an unsafe vehicle. In 2023 the Throttle Position Sensor and its complete assembly was replaced in hope of a resolution. I will now replace the Engine Control CPU after the [XXX] incident. These repairs and expense are un-diagnosed non-OBD supported “shots in the dark” because Honda will not recognize the failure. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Honda service bulletin [XXX] I recently discovered after doing some research on why my 2010 Odyssey is showing cylinder1 misfire code. I replaced the injectors, swapped coil packs, etc. Still cylinder1 misfire issue. Now I find out that Honda is aware of this issue and related to VCM and some rings on piston(s) aligning. Fortunately for Honda, the 8 years unlimited miles is most likely out of a window where statistically the issue will be seen. That is my case. Sept 25, 2021 is when this first started, and has continued to be an issue. I never received notice from Honda since this is a used van. Anyway, I would like some assistance in rectifying this issue for our family van. My local Honda dealer is not even remotely interested in repairing the issue based on [XXX] because of the 8 year extended warranty is no longer applicable. I need help from Honda NA. If you know there is an issue with ring alignment, extending this for 8 years doesn't seem like you are capturing the majority of the problems; most likely a calculated risk... My Odyssey didn't show the issue until 11 years after the 2010 manufacturing date... fortunate for Honda. I need help from Honda on this, even to meet me 1/2 way to cover repair costs. This seems unacceptable to me that an issue as serious as this, known by Honda, and won't be addressed. Please help. Thank you, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
A few years ago the driver's side rear sliding door stopped working. This seemed like a safety because, if there were ever an incident such as a fire, people would not be able to expeditiously exit the back two rows of the van. There were no warnings, the door just stopped working. I spoke with our mechanic about it and he stated that he had seen that with several Honda Odyssey vans. I had the door repaired. I recently learned that this had been an issue with other Honda Odyssey vans and wanted to let you know it had also happened to me.
Yesterday(7/9/23) when trying to open and close our back sliding door on the drivers side it was making a louder grinding sound and was difficult to open/shut. No warning lights. Today when pushing the button to open the door it started to open and then fell off the frame on the top and mid rail. Only connected by the bottom rail. It appears that the mid rail/ slider is the part that failed causing the door to come off its hinges. It also caused large deep scratches to the body of the car. This is a serious safety concern. The door is heavy and could have hurt someone. We are very lucky that my kids were still strapped safely in their car seats. We strapped the door to the car in an open position and have not gotten it inspected yet. Upon researching I have now seen hundreds of reports of this same thing happening to others.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
I am reporting a recurring and dangerous brake system failure in my 2010 Honda Odyssey. Intermittently, when the vehicle is first started, the brake pedal becomes completely stiff and cannot be depressed at all. During these events, the brakes are effectively non-functional until the condition resolves, creating a serious safety hazard. This issue occurs without warning and has happened on multiple occasions. This defect is especially dangerous because it prevents normal braking operation at startup, increasing the risk of a collision if the vehicle is moved or if immediate braking is required. I have attempted to repair this issue extensively. The vehicle has been inspected by three separate repair facilities, including a Honda dealership. The following components have been replaced in an effort to resolve the problem: •Master cylinder •Brake booster •Rotors •Brake lines •ABS system Despite these repairs, the issue persists unchanged. I have spent over $2,500 attempting to fix what appears to be a systemic defect. The Honda dealership suggested the issue may be caused by air entering the brake lines when the vehicle is parked on a slope. However, this explanation is not consistent with normal automotive function, and similar vehicles do not exhibit this behavior under the same conditions. Given the repeated failure of major brake system components to resolve the issue, I believe this represents a defect in the vehicle’s braking system that could affect other vehicles of the same model. I am submitting this complaint due to the serious safety risk posed by intermittent loss of braking function and request that this issue be investigated.
When having to slow down or stop quickly, the van starts to jerk back and forth and shake a lot and the car becomes very difficult to control. This is especially noticeable when going down hills such as I-70 in Colorado, I-15 in eastern California or mountain passes in the Sierra Nevadas, but also when coming around a corner on a freeway and the traffic is stopped. It would be very serious if driving and a child ran out into the street in front of the van. I recently learned that this has happened fairly frequently with Honda Odyssey vans. I have had to replace brake and strut parts and bearings multiple times. (gratefully the struts were still under warranty, so I only had to pay for labor the ensuing times.)
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2010 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the battery warning light illuminated, and smoke was coming from under the front passenger’s side hood. The vehicle was driven to the residence and parked. The contact stated that moments later, smoke and flames were coming from underneath the hood of the vehicle, and the Fire Department was called to the scene. The contact was able to extinguish the flames using a water hose prior to the Fire Department arriving at the residence. While at the residence, the fireman disconnected the battery as a precaution. The cause of the fire was not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 182,697.
A few months ago, the battery went dead. I purchased a new battery and it went dead also. I had the mechanic check it and he said that some Honda Odyssey's had that problem (usually 2011). Even if everything is turned off, the battery will die in less than two days if the van is not driven. This has led to the van being inoperable in various locations requiring a locksmith to come open the car so the hood can be opened so the the battery can be recharged. The mechanic spent a few hours and was able to pinpoint the "faulty" fuse(Driver's side, #7, 7.5A, "backup"), but said that there were 13 different subsystems associated with that fuse and that it would take many hours to isolate and test each individual subsystem which would cost many thousands of dollars--more than the car is considered to be worth. So he recommended that I just either drive it every day or pull the fuse at night. In addition to the battery going dead, one of the problems, is that I don't feel safe to lock the car because I know I won't be able to unlock it if the battery dies.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
The fuel pump as been failing and caused issues
The contact owns a 2010 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while driving or parked, there was a strong fuel odor coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was driven to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the fuel pump and the fuel tank needed to be replaced due to a leak in the fuel tank. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 66,000.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED WHILE BRAKING. ACCELERATION CONTINUED AFTER VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO A STOP. THIS HAPPENED 3 OR 4 TIMES IN A SPAN OF 30 MINUTES. FOOT WAS NOT ON ACCELERATOR. DRIVEN BY ADULT MALE.
WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH ON RURAL PAVED HIGHWAY, OUR 2010 HONDA ODYSSEY VAN APPLIED MODERATE BRAKING (WITH ZERO DRIVER INPUT) TO THE LEFT-FRONT WHEEL TWICE WITHIN A SECOND OR TWO OF EACH OTHER. THIS BRAKING CAUSED THE VAN TO PULL MODERATELY TO THE LEFT AND NEARLY CROSS THE HIGHWAY CENTERLINE. THE VSA LIGHT ICON (VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST) FLASHED ON THE DASH DURING THIS EVENT. THIS HAPPENED ON A SUNNY, DRY DAY WITH TEMPERATURE AROUND 70F. VAN WAS TRAVELING ON A PERFECTLY STRAIGHT SECTION OF HIGHWAY. NO TRACTION ISSUES WHATSOEVER.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
Unknown
2010 ODYSSEY W/ ABOUT 159K MILES. ENGINE STARTED MISFIRING. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS, BUT HONDA IS SAYING IT EXPIRED, AND I AM NOT ELIGIBLE FOR COST COVERAGE, AND THE REPAIRS ONLY HAVE A 50% CHANCE OF FIXING THE ISSUE. I BOUGHT THE CAR USED IN 2016, AND THEY SAY THE RECALL EXPIRED AFTER MAKE YEAR. I WAS DRIVING MY CAR TO WORK AND IT LOST THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE AND WHITE SMOKE WAS COMING OUT EXHAUST. AND THE BELT SNAPPED AND IT HAS BEEN PARKED SINCE EARLY FEBRUARY.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY STEERING WHEEL WAS HARD TO STEER AT TIMES. MOSTLY IT FELT LIKE IT WOULD LOCK-UP ON ITS OWN. DURING DRIVING. WHENEVER I NOTICE A FLUID LEAK IN MY DRIVEWAY. I CONTACT MY LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP. CAUSE I PURCHASED THE CAR JUNE 12, 2020.I HAD PURCHASED EXTENDED WARRANTY, TO HELP PAY FOR REPAIRS. HONDA DEALERSHIP HAD TO REPLACE FACTORY POWER STEERING PUMP AND POWER-STEERING HIGH PRESSURE HOSE. WHICH COST ME OUT OF POCKET OF $ 1,365.03. THIS ITEM WAS NOT COVERED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP, WHEN PURCHASED IN 2010, THERE WAS A RE-CALL ON THIS ITEM.
PIVOT BOLT ON THE AUTO-TENSIONER BROKE TWICE. THE FIRST TIME THE PIVOT BOLT BROKE WAS AFTER I HAD THE ALTERNATOR REPLACED AND I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY TO TAKE CHILDREN TO SCHOOL IN SUBZERO WINTER CONDITIONS. I BARELY MADE IT HOME AS MY VAN WAS RUNNING ONLY ON THE BATTERY. IF I HAD STALLED ALONG THE ROAD, ME AND MY CHILDREN WERE AT RISK OF HYPOTHERMIA OR POSSIBLY DEATH DUE TO FRIGID -40 COLD WEATHER. I THEN HAD A NEW TENSIONER PULLEY BRACKET INSTALLED AND AFTER DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND THE PIVOT BOLT BROKE OFF COMPLETELY AGAIN. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION THAT CAN CAUSE SERIOUS HARM OR DEATH DUE TO DEFECTIVE PIVOT BOLT..
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
the air bag light is on and the tire pressure sensor on.
VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON A LOCAL STREET, A CAR STOPPED SHORT IN FRONT OF ME, I HIT THE CAR WITH MY FRONT LEFT END, THE DRIVER AIR BAG DEPLOYED, POPPED AND THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG DEPLOYED. I SUSTAINED BURN INJURIES TO MY LEFT FOREARM WITH PERMANENT SCARRING.

Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
Passenger side sliding door jammed halfway open and would not close or open. Had to have the car towed to the mechanic and have all components of sliding door replaced (twice!). Driver's side strut spring broke under normal use - with 62000 miles on the vehicle. Now rear backup camera/GPS/radio unit has ceased working at all. Passenger side door also randomly begins to close part way through opening, nearly injuring my child's friend who was exiting the vehicle.
BROKEN FRONT STRUT COIL SPRING WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY I HEARD A LOUD METALLIC SOUND WHEN GOING OVER A BUMP OR ROUGH ROAD CONDITIONS. I THEN NOTICED THE NOISE WHILE DRIVING ON LOCAL ROADS AS SLOW AS 25 MPH.

Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
For the second time in less than 4 months my rear window has exploded into thousands of pieces. The broken bits explode everywhere. First time was 1.15.25. Second time was 5.3.25.I was parked both times. I had other windows/doors either cracked or open. Both times was during 20mph winds.
I WAS DRIVING (IN MOTION) WITH MY WIFE AND 5 CHILDREN ON A STRAIGHT, SMOOTH STRETCH (NO CURVES OR LANE CHANGES) OF EASTBOUND I-84 NEAR BURLEY/RUPERT, IDAHO. THERE WAS A LIGHT DRIZZLE, TEMP OF ~60 F, AND NO OTHER VEHICLES WITHIN 300 FEET FRONT, SIDE, OR REAR. ALL WINDOWS OF THE VEHICLE WERE CLOSED, AND INTERIOR TEMP OF THE VEHICLE WAS ~68 F. WE HEARD A VERY LOUD, SCARY SOUND -- LIKE A SHOTGUN OR AS IF WE HAD DRIVEN UNDER A HUGE WATERFALL. I LOOKED AROUND AND SAW NO OBVIOUS ISSUES, THEN LOOKED UP AND OPENED THE CLOSED SLIDING SUNROOF COVER. I FOUND THE SUNROOF HAD SHATTERED, WHICH SCARED ME EVEN MORE, AND PROMPTLY CLOSED THE COVER TO PREVENT GLASS FROM FALLING ON ME, MY WIFE, OR MY 1 AND 3 Y/O DAUGHTERS WHO WERE SEATED IN THE SECOND ROW. WE STOPPED AT THE FIRST AVAILABLE REST AREA TO ASSESS THE DAMAGE AND TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS. AS WE DROVE, WE HEARD GLASS CONTINUE TO BREAK OFF AND BOTH SLIDE FROM THE CAR ROOF ONTO THE ROAD SURFACE, AS WELL AS TOWARD THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE BETWEEN THE ROOF AND HEADLINER.

Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
See attached document for complaint.
On 6/12/2022, minutes after exiting 45 miles of highway driving, I parked the car. Less than 90 seconds after parking, the left front tire experienced an explosive loss of air pressure. An approx 2" x 1-1/2" piece of the sidewall near the tread was missing, and the reinforcing belt inside the tire was torn. It was the inside (engine side) sidewall. There was no apparent damage from any road hazard that could have contributed to the failure. Could not find the missing sidewall section. The General Altimax 235/65R16 103T tires were purchased new on 6/1/2022 with 200,583 miles on the vehicle. Failure occurred at 217,525 miles. The tire was replaced by the original seller (Belle Tire, New Hudson, MI), who now have the tire. They also inspected for previous damage and found none. Availability for inspection unknown. Belle Tire reps indicate that this is a very unusual failure and will be reporting to manufacturer. No other entities have inspected the failed tire. No warnings/symptoms present prior to the explosion. The DOT number on the failed tire is 6546 WBMH. It is notable that the other 3 identical tires on the vehicle have four additional digits (e.g. 6546 WMBH 0421) following the letter code, which Belle Tire said was the manufacture date of the tire. (0421 would be the 4th week of 2021). The failed tire lacked this information. Obviously, my wife and I were very lucky that this failure did not occur while driving on the highway as it almost certainly would have resulted in a loss of control at high speed.

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR PASSENGER'S SIDE AUTOMATIC DOOR FAILED TO CLOSE AND LATCH. THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE DOOR WOULD OPEN INDEPENDENTLY IMMEDIATELY AFTER BEING CLOSED. THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SEAT BELT FAILED TO DISENGAGE INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE WAS NOT REPORTED TO THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 55,000.
MY TODDLER TRAVELS WITH ME UP TO 4 ROUND TRIPS A DAY. IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS, HER CARSEAT HAS BEEN GETTING HARDER AND HARDER TO UNCLICK. YOU HAVE TO PUSH VERY HARD TO GET THE RED BUTTON TO CLICK OPEN. SOMETIMES ONE SIDE WOULD CLICK OPEN, THEN THE NEXT TIME BOTH SIDES WOULD STICK. TODAY, WE WERE ON AN OUTING (FOR MOTHER'S DAY), AND WE SPENT OVER 45 MINS. TRYING TO UNBUCKLE HER FROM THE SEAT. I TRIED VERY HARD AS WELL AS A LARGE GENTLEMAN NEARBY IN THE PARKING LOT WHO HAPPENED TO NOTICE ME IN DISTRESS. MY TODDLER BECAME INCREASINGLY UPSET AS IT WAS GETTING SCARY FOR HER. THE MAN WAS ALSO SHOCKED TO SEE THAT HE WASN'T GETTING IT UNBUCKLED WITH STRONG FORCE. WE DEBATED CUTTING IT APART; WE ALSO DEBATED CALLING 911 TO HAVE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT UNLEASH IT. I RULED BOTH OUT BECAUSE WE WANTED TO GIVE IT A FEW MORE MINUTES. SO TO GET HER OUT, WE LOOSENED UP THE STRAPS AS MUCH AS WE COULD AND SQUEEZED HER FROM THE SEAT. WE SPENT ANOTHER TEN MINUTES OR SO CONTINUALLY TRYING TO UNCLICK THE BELT. IT'S SHOCKING TO ME - ALTHOUGH THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE. IT HAS NEVER TAKEN MORE THAN 3-5 MINUTES TO UNCLICK THE HARNESS. I'VE GOT NO CHOICE BUT TO KEEP USING THE SEAT UNTIL WE CAN GET RESOLUTION FROM GRACO. I DO PLAN ON CONTACTING THEM FIRST THING IN THE MORNING (MONDAY MORNING 5/13/2013) WITH THE HOPE THAT THEY WILL ALLOW ME TO RECEIVE ANOTHER MODEL OF CARSEAT - AND RETURN THIS ONE TO THEM. I HAVE NOT KEPT THE RECEIPT FROM THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE FROM TARGET, SO I'M CERTAIN THEY CANNOT EXCHANGE IT. BUT IN RESEARCHING RECALLS ABOUT THIS MODEL OF CARSEAT, I'M SHOCKED ONCE MORE THAT THIS HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED. PLEASE ISSUE A RECALL IMMEDIATELY. IT'S EXTREMELY UNNERVING TO HAVE THIS HAPPEN TO YOUR CHILD. AND EVEN MORE, THE WORST CASE SCENARIOS ARE ALREADY PLAYING IN MY MIND: WHAT IF WE HAD A CAR FIRE OR A CAR ACCIDENT? IF THE BUCKLE IS A DEFECT, WHAT ELSE IS DEFECTIVE ABOUT THIS CARSEAT? I'D LIKE NOT TO FIND OUT THE HARD WAY. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR FOLLOW-UP. THANK YOU *TR
