A poorly designed engine leads to misfires even after proper maintenance, increasing the chances of a crash. On Monday, May 12th, 2025, the MIL indicator came on and began flashing while I was driving. The engine began to misfire so violently that the vehicle was nearly undriveable; acceleration was dangerously poor. After I got home, I used a OBD-II code scanner and pulled a "P0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire" DTC. Then, I did some research, and found that a poorly designed engine causes oil to burn inside the cylinders and foul the spark plugs. I inspected the spark plugs and found multiple fouled plugs, specifically on the cylinders on which Honda's Variable Cylinder Management activates on, cylinders 1-4. I replaced all six spark plugs, and the issue went away, as expected. Photos of the fouled plugs are attached. Honda is aware of this problem, as it recently extended the warranty of the engine in this vehicle. I received a letter on July 31, 2025, titled, "Warranty Extension: 2013-15 Pilot & 2013-17 Odyssey MIL Comes on with DTCs P0301 thru P0304." (See uploaded file.) Spark plug inspection and replacement is part of the repair, in addition to a partial engine rebuild and software update. However, the warranty extension only applies *after* the misfiring has started, which is no help to the safety of this vehicle, as the issue can start at any moment while driving. Furthermore, the warranty extension only adds an extra six months to many of the affected vehicles. Therefore, any vehicle this extension applies to is an unsafe vehicle unless the safety issue already occurred and was repaired. If the issue presents itself after this time period, the owner is left with an unremedied vehicle and with an expensive repair bill.

I’m experiencing several issues with my 2014 Honda Odyssey: -The radiator fan often stays on after the car is turned off. -I have to press the shut down button 3 times before the car completely shuts off, which is concerning. -After driving for only 20 minutes , the engine temperature spikes to the max which is limiting my ability to get places safely. -The sliding doors only work when the car is off and sometimes even then it won’t open after trying 3/5 times. These issues are ongoing never stops, The overheating and fan behavior feel unsafe so we just use the car for very short drives(5mins max). I’m worried about potential engine damage or failure while driving. The sliding doors also pose a safety concern, especially with kids.

This started approximately one year plus ago. The problem is exhibited mostly when the vehicle is pulling away after a stop light. From a full stop n pushing the accelerator, the vehicle pulls forward a little n then totally hesitates n stops in the middle of the intersection leaving us in a position to be hit from behind. . Consequently, the vehicle suddenly jerks n moves forward rapidly - again putting us and other drivers at risk. Also, in driving in stop n go traffic, the vehicle suddenly jerks ahead n we are at risk of hitting car in front of us or getting hit from behind. We have had the van to a Honda dealer at three different times, but they are unable to get the van to replicate that motion. There were no warning lights or messages. We have noticed recalls for other vans even up to the 2013 but NOT the 2014 Honda Odyssey!! We thought by now the 2014 would have been included in the recall, but so far no luck! The vehicle has not been seen by the police or an insurance rep but is available for inspection any time. It would seem that the problem is fuel injection or some sensor. Please help before we are injured or someone else gets hurt.

The contact owns a 2014 Honda Odyssey. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that the fuel pump was repaired by the dealer before the contact received the recall letter. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and the contact sought reimbursement for the repair. The manufacturer stated that the reimbursement process could not be completed until a remedy was available and a case was opened. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

I WAS PULLING INTO A DRIVE THROUGH ON DECEMBER 6, 2020. AS I APPLIED THE BRAKE (I DRIVE WITH ONE FOOT - MY RIGHT FOOT) WITH MY RIGHT FOOT, THE ENGINE REVVED UP AND THE VAN MOVED ABOUT 5 FEET FORWARD AS I INCREASED THE BRAKE PEDAL PRESSURE. I THEN SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL. THE ENGINE WENT TO RED LINE. I PUSHED THE POWER BUTTON. NO ONE WAS INJURED, AND THE VEHICLE DIDN'T TOUCH ANYTHING AS THE DRIVETHROUGH AHEAD OF ME WAS EMPTY. THE DAY BEFORE, THE LDW AND FCW FAIL LIGHT CAME ON IN THE DASHBOARD WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING. WE HAVE TAKEN THE VAN TO THE LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP FOR A CHECKOUT / DIAGNOSTICS OF WHAT HAPPENED. HONDA HAS OPENED A CASE ON THIS FOR US: CASE IS 11754879. NO PICTURES OR VIDEO AVAILABLE, UNFORTUNATELY, ALTHOUGH I AM CHECKING WITH FADI'S AT 12360 WESTHEIMER ROAD 77077.

AFTER GETTING A CAR WASH FROM AN AUTOMATED CAR WASH, WHILE DRIVING TO A PARKING STALL TO VACUUM THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. IN THE PROCESS OF TURNING LEFT INTO THE PARKING STALL AND BRAKING TO PARK THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY REV'D, ACCELERATING THE VEHICLE OVER A PARKING CURB BLOCK AND INTO A POLE AT THE CAR WASH. THE RESULTING COLLISION HAPPENED ACROSS THE SPAN OF HALF A PARKING SPACE AND KNOCKED THE VEHICLE BACKWARDS A COUPLE FEET AFTER COLLIDING WITH THE POLE. THE COLLISION TRIGGERED BOTH FRONT AIR BAGS AND RESULTED IN A TOTAL LOSS OF THE VEHICLE AND PROPERTY DAMAGE OF THE CAR WASH.

WHEN DRIVING BETWEEN 20-30MPH, MY VEHICLE CONVULSES DURING A GEAR SHIFT, EVERY TIME I SWITCH FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR. CURRENT VEHICLE SERVICE BULLETIN EXISTS. 17-044 AND 17-043 ISSUED ON 2-28-2018. NO WARRANTY OFFERED AFTER 60,000 MILES. I'M CURRENTLY AT 67, 700. NO ASSISTANCE BEING OFFERED BY HONDA OR AUTHORIZED DEALER. IF SERVICE BULLETIN DOES NOT GOOD THE ISSUE, HONDA RECOMMENDS TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT!! AS A CONSUMER, I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN WITH SUCH LOW MILEAGE AND FEEL HONDA IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS, NOT THE CONSUMER. TO ISSUE A TSV MEANS THEY KNOW THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE IN MULTIPLE VEHICLES.

ON SEVERAL PREVIOUS OCCASIONS AND ON THIS DATE IN PARTICULAR EXPERIENCED A SERIOUS JERK THAT APPEARED TO BE TRANSMISSION RELATED WHEN STARTING BACK FROM A LOW MILE PER HOUR SLOW DOWN. AFTER THE JERKING BETWEEN GEARS IT SEEMED TO OPERATE MORE SMOOTHLY THE NEXT TIME. THIS INTERMITTENT PROBLEM IS CONCERNING AS THE VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 15,000 MILE BUT THE WARRANTY IS ALMOST HALF OVER IN MONTHS. AM CONSIDERING PURSUIT OF A "LEMON" LAW CLAIM FOR THIS AND OTHER MORE MINOR ISSUES. WE TOLD THE DEALER OF THE INCIDENTS AND THEY SAID THAT THE NEXT TIME IT HAPPENS WE NEED TO GO TO A HONDA DEALER IMMEDIATELY AND NOT TURN OFF THE ENGINE TO SEE IF THE ERROR IS RECORDED IN THE ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. NOT A VERY CONVENIENT FIX.

RPMS RACE WHILE VAN IS IN IDLE AN TAKES OFF WITH A JUMP IN TRANSMISSION. CLANKING NOISE METAL ON METAL IN REAR BRAKES, DOWNSHIFTS AT LOWER SPEEDS WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE ABOVE 35 MPH, SLOWING TO MAKE A TURN AND TRANSMISSION JUMPS FEELS LIKE BEING REAR ENDED, PARKING BRAKE DOESN'T ENGAGE AT TIMES, ON FLAT WHEN PUTTING INTO PARK TRANSMISSION CLUNKS AND VEHICLE HAS A DEFINITE MOVEMENT LIKE SOMETHING FALLING OUT OR ON VEHICLE, LOOSES POWER AT 65 MPH NO MATTER HOW MUCH THE GAS PEDAL IS FLOORED THEN SUDDENLY JUMPS INTO HIGH SPEED THRUSTING VAN FORWARD, TRANSMISSION JUMPS SEVERELY WHEN PARKED ON A GRADED SLOPE AND MAKE METAL CLANKING SOUND. DEALER SAYS THERE ARE NO ISSUES AND THIS IS ALL NORMAL. THIS IS A DIRECT SAFETY ISSUE FOR ME AND I AM WORRIED THAT SOMETHING MIGHT HAPPEN CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. AT ONE POINT SOME ADJUSTMENTS TO SENSORS WERE PERFORMED BUT DID NOT CORRECT ISSUE. BRAKE ISSUE DISCOVERED AND ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO CORRECT TWICE. TOLD THIS IS NORMAL. ALSO A LOUD ELECTRONIC COMPUTER SOUNDING LIKE AN ANCIENT REBOOT OF AN OLD COMPUTER IS GREATLY NOTICEABLE WHEN THE PROBLEMS ACT UP. TOLD THIS IS NORMAL AN NO PROBLEMS BY THE DEALER. I FEEL I AM BEING IGNORED AND TREATED LIKE A STUPID PERSON EACH TIME I CALL. SERVICE MANAGER ACTUALLY STATED THAT HIS HANDS ARE TIED AND TOOK TO NEXT LEVEL OF DISTRICT SERVICE MANAGER WHO STATED THIS IS NORMAL. I BEG TO DIFFER. THE DISTRICT SERVICE MANAGER DID NOT SPEAK WITH ME AT ALL. WHAT GAME IS HONDA PLAYING. SAFETY ISSUES AND PERFORMANCE OF VEHICLE ARE BEING IGNORED. REARVIEW CAMERA IS ACTING UP AS WELL AS ELECTRIC DOOR LOCKS AND SLIDING DOORS ARE SLOW TO RESPOND WHILE CLOSING. WORRIED ABOUT SAFETY WHILE DRIVING. *TR

I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN I HEARD A LOUD CLUNK. THOUGHT I HIT A BUMP BUT WHEN I GOT OFF THE HIGHWAY AND STOPPED AT A LIGHT THE CAR STARTING BUCKING BETWEEN 0-30 MILES PER HOUR. IT CONTINUED TO DO SO AT EVERY START. DROVE IT TO HONDA DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH VEHICLE. HAVE DONE RESEARCH ON VEHICLE ONLY TO FIND NUMEROUS OTHER COMPLAINTS OF SAME ISSUE. THIS IS DANGEROUS! IF I WAS TRYING TO CROSS AN INTERSECTION AND IT STARTED BUCKING, I MIGHT NOT MAKE IT OUT OF INTERSECTION ON TIME. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS ISSUE AS HONDA IS SAYING NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THEIR CARS. *TR

AS I TRY TO ACCELERATE FROM A LOW SPEED, FOR EXAMPLE ENTERING AN INTERSECTION OR A HIGHWAY, THE TRANSMISSION SLIPS AND BANGS INTO GEAR, CAUSING THE VAN TO HESITATE BEFORE IT MOVES, IT IS A VIOLENT FEELING, ALMOST LIKE BEING REAR ENDED FROM ANOTHER VEHICLE. I HAVE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES AND HAD THE TECHNICIAN EXPERIENCE WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT VERIFYING SOMETHING IS WRONG. THEN WHEN I GO TO PICK IT UP AFTER ITS BEEN FIXED, I AM TOLD BY THE MANAGER THAT IT IS NORMAL BECAUSE NO CODES CAME UP. *TR

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
