My vehicle is having issues with the fuel engagement system. This is a recall on 2016 Honda Odyssey but when I type in my VIN it says my vehicle is not affected. My vehicle is affected and would like it looked at under this recall.
2016 Honda Odyssey with 76,000 miles. Vehicle experienced recurring cylinder 3 misfire (DTC P0303) caused by Honda's Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system allowing oil to bypass piston rings — a known defect covered under Honda TSB A25-061 and TSB 13-081. Vehicle was brought to Tony Honda (Honolulu, Hawaii) multiple times prior to January 31, 2026 warranty extension deadline but was not diagnosed until after expiration. Honda is now refusing to cover piston ring replacement under warranty despite this being the exact repair specified in their own technical service bulletins. Vehicle has been at Tony Honda since March 10, 2026 — 71 days — with no resolution.
COMPLETE shutdown of the engine while driving. No warnings - no flickering- no stumbling or misfire, just complete engine shutoff - dash and everything just turns off. Reading up on past recalls for this era of vans (mine a 2016) the 2013-2020 recall on the fuel pump sounds identical to this same thing I am experiencing. I was driving along in the city with my family in the vehicle and 2 times already while driving it has done this complete shutdown. If i wasn’t an experienced driver it would be enough for anyone to freak out and possibly cause some serious accidents. After I pull over and can try to restart the vehicle , thankfully it has restarted and allows me to continue forward. This is obviously not normal for a vehicle, Or even a fuel pump.
The contact owns a 2016 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle on several occasions, the vehicle started after the third attempt. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that there was a long crank caused by the fuel pressure bleeding back into the fuel tank. The dealer determined that the fuel pump module assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 145,000.
I have a Honda Odyssey 2016 with low mileage, which I purchased almost 2 years ago.This has happened twice. While driving in traffic, I approached a stop light and applied my brakes. When I applied the brakes, the engine accelerated at the same time propelling the car forward. I pressed on the brakes as hard as I could to keep the car from hitting the car in front of me. The second time this happened, I was able to turn off the ignition and then restart it. This is a very dangerous situation because it is extremely difficult to control the car and keep it from moving ahead. I used all of my strength to push against the brake to keep the car from moving ahead. There are other instances of this identified online if you search for it. There needs to be a recall or a way to fix this problem. I took the car to the Honda dealer on October 8, 2025. He kept it for four days and examined it thoroughly but could not find anything wrong with the car and could not get it to replicate this behavior. I never know when the surging forward might happen.
There was a fuel pump failure causing the car to not start properly then shut off. The dealer we took the vehicle to stated that the pump almost exploded.
Car stalled while driving, requiring restart. Independent Service Center determined fuel pump failure. Independent Service Center replaced fuel pump.
The engine. I have a 2016 Honda Odyssey. All scheduled maintenance has always been done on this vehicle. I have all the documentation. And I mean it has been babied. It has 110,000 miles. Driving one morning last week and the car just seized up. No warning. No previous warning light. Had it towed to the dealership. The Variable Cylinder Management system had allowed a build up of gunk in the engine. Need an engine rebuild.$5600. Honda just had a recall for cars of the same model manufactured before 2014 for the same issue. As for safety having your engine seize up on the highway is dangerous.
While driving the engine started to run rough and the vehicle started to decelerate. The check engine light and the traction control light came on. I let up on the gas pedal, the van continued to run rough. I made it home and the next day took the van to a mechanic, he told me that he observed oil fouling on the #3 spark plug, consistent with worn piston rings. The van is a 2016 Honda Odyssey with 91,000 miles.
My car technician found that my car has leaking problems, and is burning engine oil for a long time which means the engine oil leaking from the engine that might cause fire or damage engine and cause serious engine failure and this is a serious safety concern. I heard this is a common problem for Honda cars. Please advise to recall the vehicles with this problem. Thank you very much.
This is a problem with the car’s variable cylinder management. It causes the spark plug to degrade, the engine cylinders fill with oil and damages the piston rings. This has happened to me on my 2016 Honda Odyssey which has less then 50,000 miles. When the engine cylinders misfire while driving, it causes sudden loss of power and an inability to drive. The repairs are very costly. There was a class action lawsuit aimed at this very problem in the 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey - Honda settled the lawsuit March of 2014. Honda extended the warranty and would fix the issue on the existing 2008-2013 Honda Odysseys. Honda has not fixed the problem and they continue to sell vehicles with this known issue and not disclosing it to their customers. It remains a safety issue while driving.
The exact issue was reported for 2011-13 Honda OdesseY Models, All TRIMS and HONDA was issued a extended warranty for those vehicles and Honda is denying the same warranty extension for 2016 Honda Odessey models. The details are published in Service Bulletin 13-081 , which says
On December 7, 2022, while driving my family of six, my 2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L with 83,000 miles triggered a flashing check engine light and lost most acceleration while on a busy highway. I was able to limp the vehicle to a repair shop who identified that the van appeared to be burning oil. Oil was changed in its entirety and was advised to check oil frequently. On February 5, 2023, again while driving my family on a major highway, the flashing check engine light was triggered along with the antilock braking system, lane departure warning and front collision warning, along with a display message of front ‘FCW system failed’. Upon checking the oil level, which was fine, I again slowly drove the van to a mechanic. The mechanic removed all spark plugs and checked the coils. Spark plugs 1-3 all had oil on them causing them to foul and the coil on piston 3 was destroyed. This very same issue was the cause of a class action lawsuit for which Honda issued recalls and extended warranties for vehicles ranging from 2008 - 2013, yes the issue continued in Honda vehicles such as mine until 2018. I am now forced to pay ~$4500 for a repair that should have been covered under a voluntary recall. Oil in the spark plugs is a known fire hazard and this willful neglect by Honda placed the lives of myself and my family of six at risk. Even more shameful is that multiple Honda service departments in my area were contacted as a result of this faulty piston issue and each independently stated that this is a known issue in Honda models up through 2017. If Honda service centers can attest to this, and they are the face of Honda America to consumers, yet have taken no responsible actions to date to offer consideration for their loyal patrons, then the government has a duty to protect consumers through a mandatory recall to address this prevalent safety issue. Do so now before an engine fire caused by gross negligence takes the life or lives of innocent children.
HELLO: I HAVE A 2016 HONDA ODYSSEY I AM TRADING IN TODAY. A FEW WEEKS AGO I WAS IN DRIVE WITH MY FOOT ON THE BREAK. THE ENGINE STARTED RACING AND MOVING THE VAN. I PUT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL AND IT RACED TO 4500 RPM. I PLACED IT IN PARK, IT RACED TO 5500 RPM AND WAS NOT STOPPING. I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF. THEN RESTARTED AND THE PROBLEM WAS GONE. I WANT TO REPORT THIS TO YOUR AGENCY. THANK YOU
MY DAUGHTER WENT TO FILL UP THE GASOLINE IN VAN, IT WAS ALL LEAKED OUT. SHE CALLED PLANO FIRE DEPARTMENT, HE PUT ABSORBANT ON THE GROUND AND TURN THE CAR ON, SHE CAME HOME WITH LITTLE OR NO GAS IN TANK.I CALLED NEXT DAY TO HONDA DEALER AND WAITING FOR THEIR RESPONSE,WAITING FOR THEIR CALL.
WORKMANSHIP BY HONDA SERVICE AND REPAIR CAUSED CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGE TO MY ODYSSEY 2016 CAR, WITH LESS THAN 32K MILES FOR NOW. VEHICLE WAS TIMELY SERVICED /REPAIRED BY FIESTA HONDA 6 TIMES IN LESS THAN 1.7 YEARS. REGISTERED A CASE WITH AMERICAN HONDA TO OFFER COMPLETE REPAIR, EXTENDED BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY AND OUT OF THE POCKET EXPENSES. AMERICAN HONDA AND FIESTA HONDA REFUSED TO TAKE CARE OF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND OUT OF THE POCKET EXPENSES AND THEY HAVE COVERED UP THE CASE AND THEIR MISTAKES, THROUGH JUST BLAME GAME. PER DAVID HONDA FRISCO, WHO CHECKED THE VEHICLE INITIALLY -"'CYLINDER BLOCK ASSEMBLY: P3400/P3497 VALVE PAUSE STUCK OFF. CHECKED FOR LOW OIL AND OIL LEVEL WAS OVER FULL. ALSO FOUND BURNT OIL/SLUDGE STUCK ALL OVER DIP STICK. REMOVED VALVE COVERS AND REAR SPOOL VALVE ASSEMBLY AND FOUND OIL PASSAGE IN SPOOL. ASSEMBLY CLOGGED DUE TO NEGLIGENCE. OIL IS VERY DIRTY DUE TO OIL NOT BEING CHANGED CONSISTENTLY .' , WHEN THE ENGINE LIGHT ON MAY LAST WEEK, I BROUGHT IT TO DAVID HONDA FRISCO, FROM FRISCO, FIESTA HONDA HONDA TOWED THE VEHICLE TO SAN ANTONIO AND MANIPULATED THE CASE BY AMERICAN HONDA AND FIESTA HONDA. AMERICAN HONDA CASE MANAGER WAS VERY RUDE AND ARROGANT HANDLING THE CASE. AMERICAN HONDA AND FIESTA HONDA IS NOT EXPLAINING WHAT THEY HAVE DONE TO THE VEHICLE, THEY JUST SAY READY TO PICK UP. PROBABLY A MIRACLE HAPPENED TO THIS VEHICLE, HOW CAN WE TRUST THIS VEHICLE, FIESTA HONDA AND AMERICAN HONDA.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2016 HONDA ODYSSEY. WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASHED INTO A TELEPHONE POLE. THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A TOW LOT WHERE IT WAS DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V417000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE); HOWEVER, THE CONTACT DID NOT RECEIVE A RECALL LETTER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 21,700. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
HI, I BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE TWO DEFECTS FOR ODYSSEY 2016 1. LOW GAS WARNING INDICATOR IS TOO HARD TO GET NOTICED 2. NO AUDIBLE NOISE WHEN RUNNING LOW ON GAS. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS THAT IF RUNNING OUT OF GAS ON THE ROAD. SUDDENLY LOSE OF POWER IS VERY DANGEROUS, VERY EASY TO GET THE CAR CRASH ON THE ROAD. AND IT HAPPENED TO ME TODAY. THANKS GOD, IT HAPPENED WHEN I'M ON A LOCAL ROAD NOT THE FREE WAY. BUT I HOPE IT NEVER HAPPENED AGAIN TO ALL OTHER ODYSSEY OWNER IN THE FUTURE. THAT'S THE REASON I FILED THIS CASE. FUEL LEVEL METER/LOW GAS INDICATOR IS ON THE RIGHT BOTTOM OF THE INSTRUMENT BOARD. BUT THE LIGHT IS MOSTLY BLOCKED BY THE WHEEL WITH THE WAY I SIT SO I HARDLY EVER TELL WHEN I'M RUNNING ON EMPTY. (SEE THE ATTACHED PICTURE). AND THERE IS NO AUDIBLE NOISE WHEN YOUR RUNNING LOW ON GAS. THERE IS NO WAY THAT THE DRIVER CAN GET WARNING IS HE ALREADY ON THE WAY TO DANGER. I KNOW THE DRIVER SHOULD CHECK THE GAS BEFORE MOVING THE VEHICLE. BUT ALL THE CAR I DROVE BEFORE HAVE SOUND ALARM/BEEP TO REMIND ME EVERY TIME WHEN I MOVE THE CAR, AND ALSO THE LOW FUEL WARNING LIGHT IS IN THE CENTER OF THE BOARD. IT VERY EASY TO GET THE NOTICE OF THE SITUATION OF LOW GAS. BUT ODYSSEY 2016 PLACED THE GAS INDICATE IN THE PLACE THAT HARDLY TO SEE. EVEN VEHICLES IN THE 80S HAD THAT FEATURE. DON'T KNOW WHY EVEN VEHICLES IN 2016 LOSE THIS VERY IMPORTANT SAFETY RELATED FEATURE.
