Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Today 09/24/2026 while stopped at a traffic light the car lost all electrical power and blacked out while in auto-idle stop. Last week while driving the middle electrical screen went dark. After a few minutes while driving the H symbol appeared on the display and the screen reloaded.

I am submitting this complaint regarding a serious safety issue with my Honda's Auto Idle Stop/Start system. On multiple occasions, while stopped in traffic or at an intersection, the Auto Idle Stop system has automatically shut off the engine as designed. However, when I release the brake and attempt to proceed, the engine fails to restart. The vehicle becomes stalled and immobilized in the middle of active traffic. I have been stuck at traffic intersections because of this failure, creating a significant safety concern. When the vehicle fails to restart, surrounding traffic expects the vehicle to move when the light changes, while I am unable to accelerate or safely clear the intersection. This creates a risk of a collision, particularly from vehicles approaching from behind.

The vehicle's Auto Idle Stop (AIS) system failed to restart the engine after engaging at a complete stop. The affected components are the engine, starter motor, and AIS control software. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. On XXX, at approximately 7:43 PM, the AIS system engaged while I was stopped at the intersection of [XXX]. Upon releasing the brake pedal, the engine failed to restart. The vehicle became fully immobilized in an active left-turn lane with traffic behind me. I was required to shift to Park and manually depress the Start button multiple times to restore power. Multiple vehicles behind me began sounding their horns. A minor child was a passenger in the vehicle. This is not an isolated incident. The vehicle has been presented to Howdy Honda, in Austin, Texas, for the same defect on three to four prior occasions. On the most recent prior visit, the dealer replaced the starter motor — the specific remedy prescribed by Honda Technical Service Bulletins 23-008 and 23-009. The vehicle was returned to me as repaired. The failure recurred the same day. The defect has been confirmed and repair attempted by the authorized Honda dealership. The manufacturer has been on notice of this defect class-wide since at least 2018. Prior to and during failure events, the instrument cluster displays a Red Exclamation Mark warning light and/or a "Brake System" warning light. These warnings first appeared in conjunction with the initial AIS failure events and recur with each subsequent incident. My 2024 Honda Odyssey has repeatedly failed to restart after the Auto Idle Stop system shuts the engine off while stopped at a red light or in traffic. Normally, the engine should automatically restart when I release the brake, but on several occasions the vehicle completely shut down and I had to manually restart it. During one incident, the vehicle would not restart for approximately 1–2 minutes despite repeated attempts. This left the vehicle disabled in traffic and created a serious safety concern. The problem has occurred multiple times.

While driving in normal traffic, when I come to a complete stop and keep my foot on the brake, the Auto Idle Stop system activates as designed. However, when I release the brake to continue driving, the engine intermittently fails to restart properly. Instead, it repeatedly attempts to restart, cycling on and off several times before shutting down completely. When this occurs, the vehicle becomes disabled in traffic and does not respond as expected. It can take multiple attempts and a significant amount of time before the engine finally restarts, leaving me stranded in intersections or in moving traffic. This creates a serious safety hazard because surrounding vehicles continue moving while my vehicle is unable to move. This problem has occurred multiple times under normal driving conditions and is not an isolated incident. During one occurrence, the vehicle failed to restart after the Auto Idle Stop system activated, leaving my vehicle disabled in traffic. As a result of this incident, my vehicle was involved in a collision that **damaged the front and back bumper**. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, but the incident clearly demonstrates the significant safety risk associated with this defect. The vehicle is currently at an authorized Honda dealership for diagnosis and repair. I am submitting this complaint because a vehicle that unexpectedly shuts down and fails to restart after Auto Idle Stop activation presents a serious safety hazard. I am concerned that this defect could lead to additional crashes, property damage, or serious injuries if it is not corrected.

We recently moved from [XXX] to [XXX]. The first time driving down a mountain the vehicle violently shook when applying the brakes to keep the speed under control. Upon taking it to a Honda service location, the technician revealed hot spots on both front brake rotors. The van has only 21319 miles, and the rotors needed to be replaced with new rotors to make the vehicle safe. The service representative refused to file a warranty claim with Honda because he said “rotors are a wear-and-tear item.” The warranty states bumper-to-bumper coverage for 3 years, or 36000 miles, but does not cover normal wear-and-tear. These hot spots were not normal wear-and-tear. Nonetheless, the representative refused to file a warranty claim unless I was willing to leave the car at their shop for 48 hours or more while they wait for a response, and emphasized that “I’ve never seen Honda accept this claim.” Upon further review of the brake specs, it seems that Honda uses cast-iron OEM rotors which may not be suitable for normal wear-and-tear for a 6000 lb vehicle. To make matters worse, the new OEM brakes are only warrantied for 12 months/12000 miles whereas a non-Honda service station would have installed a heavy-duty brake for less cost and also warrantied it for 3 years/36000 miles. I have had multiple issues with the radio (16000 miles). After many personal videos dealership was able to fix one of this issues with a new part (22000 miles). I was informed the other issues I was having with the radio was due to my battery not staying fully charged. I was also having issues with the van not starting right away, which made me feel I could get stranded. It took many attempts to get the van to start. The van also wouldn't let me reverse one time, with a message telling me to place van in park. Another issue is the van is very slow to restart from auto idle shut off. The transmission is slow to change gears in lower gears and the van jerks a little bit. Next my rotors were warped. I was informed by the dealership that there was nothing wrong with my transmission and the auto idle down was working properly. NO one could explain the rotors being warped. They reshaped my rotors and replaced the battery and told me they hoped that fixed the problem. Well indeed it did not fix the problem. As of 12/27/25 the van completely shut off at a stop sign and again on 12/28/25. The issue is only getting worse (24,000 miles) and now I am scared to death that the van will stop while i am driving. The dealership has been contacted and I am waiting on a call back for a loaner car. I was in traffic and was extremely worried about my safety, as well, the safety of others around me and with me. ( Side note I returned the van to another dealership soon after the first dealership performed work on the van, when I heard a metal on metal sound and what sounded like a bolt rolling around in my back brakes. They did not find anything wrong but were also puzzled by the rotors already being warped. I was afraid to make the trip to the orig dealership). I have recently gotten a video of the brakes scraping again. This van is causing a lot of safety issues for my family.

The vehicle suffered an Auto Idle Stop failure at a red light. The engine shut down normally, but failed to automatically restart when the brake was released. There were no dashboard warning lights, and I was forced to manually shift the vehicle into Park to restart the engine in active traffic.

The vehicle was stopped at a red light. This vehicle is equipped with an auto-start/stop system to save fuel. Once the red light turned green the engine refused to restart. This was the second instance. The vehicle took over 30 seconds before it would restart. None of the push-to-start buttons worked, the car would not recognize that the brake was pressed, and it had also shifted itself into park. Very dangerous while traffic was moving all around us.

2024 Honda Odyssey with only 24K miles has a leak in the tailgate from bad welding in the body that is gathering water in the trunk. Safety isn’t at risk but I would say that the corrosion to any electrical items are at risk which will put me and my family and others at risk of something failing. Yes the problem has been reproduced and it’s a common thread on the internet. We will be taking it to the dealership to inspect since it’s still under warranty. No messaging of this from the car except the fowl odor.

Last week, I opened my vehicle door and noticed water standing in the foot well. I didn't think too much of it until I started driving down the street and gallons of water were gushing on my feet in the footwell from behind the steering wheel and fuse box. I parked and waited for it to dry out a few days. I took my vehicle to the dealer and was shocked to hear that this is caused because the sunroof has a drainage system, and when the primary drain clogs, due to pollen or dirt, the secondary drain drains directly into the driver footwell. They advised that this is an issue that disregards vehicle age and sunroof non-use. Because this is a new vehicle, all of my basic maintenance and inspections have been provider by the Honda dealer. I asked why this had not been inspected on my previous service appointments and was told the primary drain for the sunroof can only be inspected by camera. It is only when the primary drain becomes clogged that the water dumps into the driver side footwell. I searched my owner manual and found nothing to indicate or require that the primary sunroof drain should be inspected, cleaned or serviced, at any of the maintenance intervals, and especially not during the first 2 years of ownership. The steering column, fuse box, and driver footwell house all of the necessary electrical and mechanical parts for steering, braking, acceleration, lighting and all other electrical systems controls. Additionally, if this were to happen while driving, the distraction to the driver could be catastrophic. My vehicle has been at the dealer for a week to clear the clog in the primary sunroof drain, remove the seat and carpet to dry, & inspect the electric systems including the power seat. I can make the vehicle available for inspection as needed and the dealer can provide the camera inspection that diagnosed the issue. This happened due to everyday dust and pollen, and there was no advance warning that this drain failure was imminent.

I believe something is wrong with the electrical system tied into the infotainment system of the car, which displays the radio, heating, cooling, shows the rear camera controllers, as well as some fo the lighting in the sport L is not fully lit, for example where the shift gears is there a light that goes across the front, mines if red, only 1 side is actively turninig on, but the other side is off, at time the display become unresponsive, meaning no matter what I select nothing is displayed I only get the main screen that shows the FM/AM, CAR PLAY, Andriod Auto, Setting etc, when this happens and when the screen flickers the radio does not turn on, no sound is heard, I can turn on/off the ac, but can control where the air flows, or changing some basic settings, at times the rear camera will not work as well. I have videos of this for my records, and I did report this directly to Honda, but they indicated there is no recall for the infotainment system, I previously had a 2021 Odysessy and there was a recall for soemthing very similar, not sure why they would continue to use the same system in the newer vechiles, clearly something is wrong here, so I am documenting this for my records, but I believe Honda needs to step in and correct this issue before other electrical problems occur and someone gets injured

Vehicle start up diagnostics show multiple failures, including ABS, e-steering, emergency braking, adaptive speed control. Dealership found a problem with the right rear ABS sensor. The sensor wire harness was severed. The harness showed damage in multiple places (see photos). Besides being severed, it showed another deep cut and a place where the outer plastic sheath was cut away. The loss of ABS sensor made the vehicle exhibit poor handling including braking. The vehicle has only 4000 miles and is in pristine condition with no damage.

While driving on a highway in California we heard a bang above our heads followed by a cracking sound. I knew immediately that the sunroof exploded based on reading posts about it in a Facebook Odyssey owners group. Fortunately the interior slider/shade was closed and no glass fell on us. There was nothing above us to fall on the roof. There were no cars on front of us to kick up road debris, nor did we see anything airborne. The road was flat and smooth. The temperature was in the low seventies and had not changed in the previous hour. There is no discernable reason the glass would just shatter. We used duct tape to attempt to hold the glass together to 1) keep it out of the passenger compartment 2) weatherseal the car as precipitation was forecasted. We proceeded on our trip and stopped in Flagstaff, AZ. It was disturbing to find out that we had to purchase the glass from a Honda dealer and have it installed by a commercial auto glass business as the dealer doesn't do glass installation. It is ridiculous that I lost a day of travel to a problem that has been around for over a decade with NHTSA reports and a class action lawsuit about the poor quality of Honda sunroofs.

Subject: Urgent Safety Concern: Driver Side middle Seat Belt Malfunction I am writing to report a serious and distressing incident involving the driver-side middle seat belt in our Honda Odyssey van. While parked, the seat belt became stuck and tightly wrapped around my [XXX] son. Despite trying all possible options, including turning off the engine and shifting to park, we were unable to release the belt. After struggling for 45 minutes, we had no choice but to cut the seat belt in order to free the child. The experience caused significant panic and distress to my child and was extremely dangerous. This raises serious safety concerns. Please let me know immediately: •If this is a known issue or part of a recall. •What steps Honda is taking to address this. •Whether it is safe to use the vehicle until this is resolved. We are extremely concerned and would appreciate your urgent attention to this matter. Sincerely, INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

There was a slow leak in the left rear tire overnight while the car was parked in driveway. In the morning the low tire pressure indicator light was on in the car. I drove the car to the Honda dealer to fill the tire with air. Overnight while parked in the driveway the tire leaked again and in the morning there was a low tire pressure warning again. I left the car with the Honda dealer and they couldn't find anything after testing the tire so they replaced the vale stem, Schrader valve and tire bead seal. On 2/27/2024 Honda found a pinhole leak in the sidewall of the tire. Honda customer service informed me to contact Bridgestone/Firestone. The tire will be inspected by a Firestone owned tire center and I am waiting to hear the solution Firestone will offer.
