2017 Honda Pilot Brakes Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the brake system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Brakes reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Lane keeping assist problem light on, collision mitigation system problem light on, road departure mitigation system problem light on, adaptive cruise control problem light on. brake sy stem light on. The vehicle’s multiple camera has failed and it is a common occurrence with this vehicle. Honda has not recalled this and is charging customers upwards of $2500 to replace the camera behind the windshield and recalibrate it. This isn’t an issue based on miles there have been incidents with it happening as early as 30,000 miles. I bought my vehicle used and about 113,000 this started happening

On XXX, while my wife was driving our 2017 Honda Pilot Elite (VIN: [XXX]) southbound on [XXX], approaching the intersection with [XXX], the vehicle experienced a complete engine stall due to the Auto Idle Stop feature. The engine shut off at a stop but failed to automatically restart when she released the brake to proceed. All dashboard warning lights flashed, and the vehicle became inoperable in the middle of traffic, creating a significant traffic jam at a busy intersection. My wife was able to restart the vehicle manually by shifting to Park and pressing the engine start/stop button. This is part of a persistent safety defect with the Auto Idle Stop (Idle Stop-Start) system. The vehicle has stalled multiple times in traffic and on highways since new. Honda performed TSB 23-008 (PGM-FI Idle Stop software update/product update campaign) on XXX at Autopark Honda in Cary, NC, but the issue was not resolved. I also replaced the battery in November 2024 at the dealership's recommendation, but the no-restart/stall problem continues. I normally keep the Auto Idle Stop feature disabled for safety, but my wife forgot on this occasion. **Cause:** UNKNOWN (per Honda TSBs 23-008 and 23-009, the issue relates to excessive cylinder pressure and/or low cranking torque after Idle Stop engages; prior fixes have not resolved it). This defect creates a dangerous situation where the vehicle can unexpectedly lose power in traffic, increasing collision risk. I have reported this to the dealership multiple times and am seeking resolution under TSB 23-009 (warranty extension). so i have a Honda pilot and have been seeing a light saying that my collision mitigation system is broke so i took it in for a diagnostic which i was charged for which is fine and normal i guess but they told me that the system was broken possibly from just driving through construction zones and this causes phantom braking so i have to get it fixed but they want to charge me for the repairs which from my perspective the customer i shouldn't have to pay for a defect like that that can cause injurie or much worse

The vehicle was sold to us with pre-existing major damage to the control arms, bearings and a brake rotor. We heard a metal on metal scraping noise when turning left and immediately took it to a certified Honda dealer who then provided us details of the extent of the damage. The damage to the brake rotor could have caused brake failure and damage to the control arm could have caused on accident. I can't imagine the guilt I'd feel if my [XXX] wife and my [XXX] son got into an accident. This vehicle is their daily driver. While driving in the highway , took an exit and slowed down and stop in a traffic and the car ‘s engine stop suddenly and Iam unable to restart it, the brake pad feels stuck and the neutral and drive button does not work, when you turn it on the other electronic still works like the audio and air conditioning but the engine will not turn on . It took us about an hour before the car start working again , causing a long traffic jam in the highway due to we can’t even put the car on neutral for other cars to help us move it on the side, 2 police officers came to the rescue to help us but it didn’t work until we tried again and for some divine intervention the engine start working again. I will have my car check at the honda service in the next few days.

SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR, THE WHEELS MAKE A CRACKING NOICE WHEN TURNING AND BRAKING. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER 2-3 TIMES AND THEY TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING THAT IT MAY JUST BE THE BRAKE PADS STICKING SOME TIMES. NOW AT 55,000 MILES THE POWER STEERING EPS AND ALL OTHER LIGHTS CAME ON LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE. THIS HAD NOT HAPPENED IN THE PAST. I HAVE READ UP ON IT AND OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. MY MAIN CONCERN SINCE I PURCHASED IT WAS THAT CRACKING NOISE WHEN TURNING WHEN BACKING UP OR TURNING WHEN GOING FORWARD. THIS ONLY HAPPENS ON STARTING TO DRIVE NOT AT FAST SPEEDS. NOW ALL THE LIGHTS ARE ON AND DON'T KNOW WHAT THE ISSUE IS. FROM RESEARCH IT SEEMS LIKE IT MAY BE SOMETHING WITH THE FUEL INJECTORS. MY CAR IS ALREADY PAST IT'S WARRANTY.

1. I HAD A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE A FEW WEEKS AGO AND I WAS TOLD BY HONDA DEALER IN SAN LUIS OBISPO,CA THAT MY BRAKES WERE IN GOOD SHAPE. BUT I NOTICED THAT WHEN I AM DRIVING IN THE HIGHWAY AT AROUND 70 MPH THEN APPLY BRAKES, THE CAR SHAKES. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO HONDA AND THEY THINK IT IS THE ROTOR AND FIXED IT YESTERDAY. THE OTHER NEW PROBLEM IS THE ALARM THAT KEPT GOING OFF RANDOMLY WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED AND LOCKED. WHEN I PICKED UP MY CAR AFTER THE OIL CHANGE A FEW WEEKS AGO, THE TECHNICIAN DID NOT MENTION ANY PROBLEMS WITH MY ALARM GOING OFF WHILE MY CAR WAS AT THE DELEARSHIP. I WENT BACK TO THE HONDA DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TEST YESTERDAY AND THEY RECOMMEND REPLACING THE KEYLESS ACCESS CONTROL UNIT. THIS WILL COST CLOSE TO $ 1000 DIAGNOSTIC, PARTS AND LABOR. I AM TOLD IF I DO NOT REPLACE THE CONTROL UNIT, THE PROBLEM CAN GET WORSE WHERE MY CAR WON'T START ANYMORE. SO I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT REPLACE IT. SO I BROUGHT MY CAR JUST FOR ROUTINE OIL CHANGE WEEKS AGO AND NOW I HAVE PROBLEM WITH ROTOR AND CONTROL UNIT THAT COST ME $ 502.72 YESTERDAY AND ANOTHER $700 PLUS DOLLARS TO REPLACE THE CONTROL UNIT. FOR THE CONTROL UNIT TO FAIL IN JUST 3 YEARS, SUGGESTS IT MAY BE DEFECTIVE TO BEGIN WITH OR VERY POOR QUALITY. UNFORTUNATELY IT JUST WENT OUT OF WARRANTY. I AM REPORTING THIS IN CASE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR HONDA PILOT THAT THE MANUFACTURER NEEDS TO ADDRESS AND FIX.

STEERING WHEEL JERKING LEFT OR RIGHT. JERKING OCCURS ERRATICALLY AND UNPREDICTABLY; STEERING WHEEL JERKS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHICH COULD EASILY CAUSE THE LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY AND IS VERY DANGEROUS AND STRESSFUL SINCE IT IS NOT CLEAR WHEN THE WHEEL JERKING WILL OCCUR WHILE DRIVING. IT DOES TEND TO OCCUR WHILE ON CURVED ROADS, APPEARING TO TRY TO JERK THE WHEEL STRAIGHT WHEN THE CAR STEERING NEEDS TO BE ADJUSTED TO STAY IN ONE'S LANE; RED AND AMBER MALFUNCTION LIGHTS COME ON AND OFF FREQUENTLY. IN PARTICULAR, THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) LIGHT COMES ON AND OFF REGULARLY EVEN WITHOUT THE JERKING STEERING WHEEL. THE TPMS WARNING LIGHT ALSO OFTEN FLASHES AT THE SAME TIME AS THE JERKING STEERING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS SUCH AS AROUND 50 MPH. RED DISPLAY OF BRAKE LIGHT WARNING AND AMBER DISPLAY OF BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING OFTEN OCCUR, SOMETIMES PAIRED WITH THE JERKING STEERING WHEEL. THE JERKING OCCURS TYPICALLY ON THE HIGHWAY AT SPEEDS SUCH AS 50 OR 55 MILES PER HOUR. *JS

THIS VEHICLE APPEARS TO HAVE FAULTY BRAKES - EITHER BY DESIGN OR BY MANUFACTURING. WHILE I CANNOT COMMENT ON THE CHANCES OF BRAKE FAILURE BUT THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BRAKES IS UNSATISFACTORY AND UNPREDICTABLE. I'M FAIRLY CONFIDENT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE AFFECTED. I WOULD PERSONALLY INVESTIGATE THE BRAKES ON THE CURRENT GENERATION HONDA PILOTS AS THEY APPEAR TO BE A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE. BUT, THE DECISION TO UNDERTAKE THIS EXERCISE OF INVESTIGATING HONDA IS UP TO YOU.

I HAVE 2017 HONDA PILOT TOURING. I HAVE A REOCCURRING PROBLEM WITH THE ANTI BREAK MITIGATION SYSTEM. IT CONTINUALLY ACTIVATES IN MULTIPLE DRIVING SITUATIONS THAT DO NOT REQUIRE IT TO ACTIVATE. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS WHEN I'M DRIVING AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS, WITH AND WITHOUT THE CRUISE CONTROL IS SET, AND ON ANY TYPE OF ROAD. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP 5 TIMES TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM CORRECTED. THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THEY HAVE TRIED TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM 5 TIMES WITHOUT SUCCESS. THE ANTI BREAK SYSTEM CONTINUES TO ACTIVATE INCORRECTLY ON ALMOST A DAILY BASIS. THE DEALERSHIP HAS STATED THAT THERE ISN'T A PROBLEM AND THAT I CAN TURN OFF THE ANTI BREAK SYSTEM AND DRIVE MY VEHICLE WITHOUT IT. I PAID FOR THIS FEATURE AND I DO NOT THINK THAT I NEED TO TURN IT OFF AS IT IS A SAFETY FEATURE OF MY CAR. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND IT NEEDS TO OPERATE CORRECTLY. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM.
