2024 Honda Pilot Steering Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the steering system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Steering reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

2024 Honda Pilot steering rack problem In December 2023, we purchased a brand-new Honda Pilot Touring. As of today, June 25, 2026 our Honda Pilot will receive from a certified Honda Dealer Repair section it’s third 3rd, yes, third steering rack and pinion. First time back to the dealer, they used special grease and grease it. This did nothing, to stop the creaking and cracking as you turn the steering wheel. This issue continued as you drove the vehicle. Second time back a week later, the Honda Technician replace the steering rack. We had to wait for the new rack to arrive, no stock. Now our new vehicle has the original replaced with a second steering rack. Now 10 months later, with a total of 15,670 miles on our vehicle the steering rack and pinion is once again creaking and cracking. Back to the dealer. Our dealer notified Honda Corporate Tech Center for direction in this matter. Once again, our dealer is to replace the defective steering rack. Currently our dealer is waiting for the new steering rack to arrive. I understand Honda has a huge issue on many vehicle types, Pilots, Passports, and CRV’s that this same steering rack is defective in huge quantities. I am worried that driving at speed on the interstate highway that this steering rack may seize up and cause an accident by not allowing us to turn the steering wheel.

The vehicle previously experienced a steering wheel locking issue and was taken to the dealer for repair. The dealer stated the issue was repaired on December 11, 2024. On February 24, 2026, while driving on a public street, the vehicle hesitated or jerked slightly during acceleration and then appeared to operate normally. After a few minutes, multiple warning messages suddenly appeared on the dashboard, and the steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn and effectively locked while I was driving. I immediately activated my hazard lights. I was unable to safely pull over because the steering wheel would not respond properly, which placed me and other drivers at risk. I had to continue driving slowly until I found a side road where I could safely stop. I turned the vehicle off. When restarting, the warning messages reappeared. After several minutes, the warning lights cleared, and the steering wheel was no longer locked but felt loose and unstable ("wobbly"). I cautiously resumed driving. After several minutes, the steering began to feel normal again. The following warnings were displayed: Hill Start Assist problem, Trailer Stability Assist problem, Hill Descent Control problem, Adaptive Cruise Control problem, Lane Keeping Assist problem, Collision Mitigation Braking System problem, Road Departure Mitigation problem, Low Speed Braking Control problem, Auto High-Beam problem, Electric Power Steering system problem – Steering Assist Not Available, and "Stop. Steering assist reduced. Stop driving when safe." The failed component appears to be the Electric Power Steering system and related driver-assistance systems. The vehicle is available for inspection. The problem was previously addressed by a dealer but has reoccurred. No prior warning lights were present before this incident. The failure occurred suddenly while driving.

Driving down a 4 lane highway in Alabama, warning lamp came on stating “ STOP Steering assist reduced. Stop driving when safe”. Multiple other warnings lights came on—-Brake system, steering system, cruise control, lane departure, stability assist system, hill assist, trailer stability assist system(see multiple photos attached). When it was safe to do so, I pulled over…the steering was VERY difficult to manage. If I had to make a turn in traffic or had to make a sudden turn to avoid an accident, I would not have been able to do so as there was NO power steering. I turned the car off, let it sit for several minutes and the Steering Assist warning was off and I appeared to have power steering but several others lights were still on. Took the car the the closet dealer and only code found was a Low Voltage Code but nothing repaired as all warnings lights were off by then.

My Honda is having strange, intermittent issues with a plethora of things. I have taken it to a diagnostic specialist who worked with a phone mechanic and noone can tell me what is going on. My car will fully shut off at stop lights randomly, so I have to turn off the auto-idle feature every time I drive. Sometimes my power steering cuts out and my wheel locks and unlocks and my computer screen shuts off when this happens. I have to shut off and start my car for it to work again. Other times, all of my automated safety features stop and I get a huge slew of messages telling me that my lane assist, automatic hill braking, and a ton of other automatic safety features don't work. My car can't lane assist, do adaptive cruise control, use the backup camera, or anything. It goes away if I stop and restart my car a bunch. I also had a seatbelt alarm that was going off repeatedly with no reason. The dealership turned off the alarm. I am having a lot of issues with this car that makes me question if it is a lemon. I see other new Pilot owners mentioning issues with power steering shutting off and it's a huge safety risk. Noone knows whats wrong or how to fix it so what do I do? This happens intermittently, randomly, and recurrently since June.

Crackling/clicking noises coming from steering rack after the vehicle has warmed up and driven for 10-20 mins. Noises are more noticeable when driving at slow speeds and when pulling in/out of parking spaces. The electric steering rack in my vehicle has been replaced twice under warranty and these noises have reappeared approximately 1-2 months after each repair/replacement event which suggests a design/manufacturing defect with this part. There is no known technical service bulletin of this issue. The short and long-term effects of this defect are not publicly known and may pose a safety hazard. From research and discussions in online forums, this appears to be common problem with 4th generation honda pilots which started in model year 2023.

Our 2024 Honda Pilot started with a grinding noise in the steering. Our Pilot only has 011,208 miles on it. We took to the dealer and they said the steering rack needs replacing but its ok to continuing driving. The dealer will order the part. Its beend 3 weeks still no part. What happens on all these Pilots if the steering rack freezes up?

There's a grinding and clicking noise when turning the wheel left and right in a parked position and when slowing down. The dealership replaced the steering rack once already 1 year ago. Now the grinding and clicking noise is back and alot worse. The dealership is going to replace the steering rack for a second time. Spoke to Honda mechanics and told them that there must be another underlining issue.

Steering makes clicking and creaking noise after vehicle is warmed up and driving slow, like parking. Took it to Mcgraft Honda and service adviser heard the noise. Dealership then informed me that the tech could not duplicate the noise and told me it’s normal to hear noises while turning.

Strange clicking noise during low speed steering left or right and moving steering wheel while parked. Honda dealer states they are unable to replicate issue. Issue is very unusual for a new vehicle. Multiple people have same issues on forums and Facebook groups. This is a potential safety issue if there is a faulty electrical steering gear box or suspension component. Honda needs to take responsibility and fix this issue instead of saying they can’t replicate it or that it maybe normal. I took video it is a sound that is audible inside and out.

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the ongoing safety issues with my leased Honda, which I obtained in March 2024. Shortly after leasing the vehicle, I noticed that the sensors would frequently activate and deactivate without any apparent reason. In May 2024, while driving, all the sensors turned on, deactivating all safety features and causing the car to swerve. The sensor lights remained on the next day, prompting me to take the car to the dealership. I was informed that the sensor and a camera required repairs, which were subsequently addressed. Despite my concerns about the safety of driving this car, especially with three children, I was assured that the issue was resolved. I filed a complaint with Honda Corporate, and they indicated that the issue would need to recur 2-3 times before considering a different vehicle. Unfortunately, on [XXX], all the sensors activated again while I was driving, causing the car to stop accelerating in the middle of a busy road with my children in the back seat. This placed us in a life-threatening situation, as other vehicles were traveling at high speeds. The transmission light also turned on, advising to avoid high speeds. The next morning, I reported the issue to Honda and arranged for roadside assistance to tow the car to the dealership. During the towing process, the sensors activated again, and the car struggled to accelerate. Once at the dealership, I provided videos of the car's behavior to Ricardo, the service advisor, who acknowledged the severity of the issue. However, he later informed me that the sensors were not currently active, and the scanner could not detect any issues. Despite keeping the car overnight for further testing, they were unable to identify or repair the problem. I was advised to either pick up the car or leave it with them, but no loaner vehicle was offered. I am extremely concerned about the safety of driving this car. Sudden collision warning displayed on dashboard and brakes were automatically applied. No vehicles in front of me and vehicle behind was sufficient distance away. There was no collision situation at all. Brake system light, collision warning light, and collision mitigation braking system problem - See your dealer displayed on dashboard. I pulled into parking a parking lot, stopped, and turned engine off. After restarting engine, error seemed to clear. Dealer review is pending.

Today, the same problem with my car reemerged immediately after I collected it from the dealership, where it was supposedly repaired for this issue. Upon driving away, making three stops, and using both the Brake Hold and Engine Idle-Stop features, I encountered the same malfunction, leading to the flashing of all warning indicators. Alarmingly, the parking brake engaged on its own at traffic signals, and the car wouldn't turn off even when this issue was occurring. Previously, I had provided the dealership with a detailed description and photos of this issue. They identified the cause as an improperly installed rear wheel speed sensor, which they claimed to have fixed and reset the error codes. However, the problem persisted right after I retrieved the car. I immediately returned the vehicle to the dealership. The car was still not turning off, and while they noted the issue, I am skeptical about their technical ability to diagnose and solve the problem effectively. I urge Honda to promptly address this issue in collaboration with the dealership and to initiate recalls to prevent potential severe accidents. To replicate the issue, toggle both the Brake Hold and Engine Idle-Stop features in various combination, and drive at a speed of 35-40 mph with 4-5 stops of around 30 seconds each toggle combination. When the issue reproduces, All the warning messages will illuminate, and the parking brake will engage automatically. I suspect the drive controller getting reset due to some electrical tripping when brake hold and/or engine-idle stop is toggled which is causing a cascade of failures.

I bought my 2024 Honda Pilot two weeks ago, it only has 300 miles and suddenly all the warnings indicating system failures were activated, engine check, lane assist, emergency braking, emission system, etc., it almost didn't start, it left me in road. It is not possible that something practically new is failing like that with two weeks of use and only 300 miles, that is not right, it is putting lives in danger. honda has to solve that
