2016 Hyundai Genesis Exterior lighting Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the exterior lighting system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Exterior lighting reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

When headlights are in auto mode, use of the turn signal can result in the headlights flickering or shutting off completely. This is not the result of hitting the light mode switch but rather an electrical short occurring in the stalk. The problem is particularly dangerous at night when signaling for an upcoming turn and loss of all vehicle lighting occurs. The problem has not been reproduced by a dealer. The component has not been inspected by officials. Initial occurrence was winter of 2022 with increasing frequency since then.

This has happened a few times the first time i was driving and the headlights flicked on and off on the dash it showed it switched from auto to off by its self it has done that a few times. The time that i was driving on the highway and the lights when out during the night i was driving 65mph over a pass with no warning I had to turn them on because they did not come back on by them self. I contacted the hyundai dealership they told me there was a tsb for it but the problem would have to happen while they are driving it so they could fix it under warranty. This is a huge safety risk because they note "Certain vehicles may exhibit intermittent headlight flickering while driving with the light switch on AUTO light mode" in there TSB and it says " intermittent" witch means "not happening regularly or continuously" so it doesn't happen they wont cover it under warranty. And it happens at random times witch causes a safety risk because if the light out it can cause a fatal accident. i contacted hyundai about this my self and they told me the same thing that the dealer has to have it happen to them or its not covered. please look into this it needs to be recalled tsb 20-BE-009H-1

I was driving at night on highway and tried to switch lanes. After I gave left signal and start changing lanes headlights turned off for several seconds. I almost panic and pushed the brake pedal. It was the Multifunction Switch which was going from Auto mode to Off.

WHILE DRIVING DURING THE DAY OR NIGHT, THE HEADLIGHTS SWITCH ON AND OFF. THIS OCCURS WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE IN THE AUTO MODE. THE DASH SHOWS THE LIGHTS GO FROM AUTO TO DRLS TO OFF THEN BACK ON. THIS HAPPENS RANDOMLY AND IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT. THE DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO FIX THE ISSUE BECAUSE THEY 'SAY' THEY CANNOT REPLICATE. THERE NEEDS TO BE AN INVESTIGATION BEFORE SOMETHING TRAGIC HAPPENS AND NOT AFTER SOMETHING TRAGIC HAPPENS. I HAVE A VIDEO OF THIS OCCURRING BUT CANNOT UPLOAD IT TO THE SITE.

WHILE DRIVING THE OTHER NIGHT, MY HEADLIGHTS TURNED OFF ON THEIR OWN. THE HEADLIGHT SETTING WAS SET TO AUTO AND THEY FLICKERED TWICE BEFORE SHUTTING ALL THE WAY OFF. AT THIS TIME I WAS ON A DARK ROAD WITHOUT STREETLIGHTS. THE ONLY WAY TO REMEDY IMMEDIATELY WAS TO TURN THE HEADLIGHT SETTING TO ON RATHER THAN AUTO. THIS ALSO HAPPENED THIS MORNING AS IT WAS RAINING BUT I FIGURED THAT WAS DUE TO GLOOMY WEATHER.

WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT WITH HEADLIGHTS ON AUTO, I PUT THE TURN SIGNAL ON, AND ALL LIGHTS (INTERIOR, DASH, AND HEADLIGHTS) RANDOMLY GO OUT. THIS ALSO HAPPENS RANDOMLY AT NIGHT WHEN CHANGING LANES (USING TURN SIGNAL) AND I MUST QUICKLY TURN THEM ON MANUALLY. THIS SPECIFICALLY HAPPENS WHEN USING TURN SIGNAL STALK, ALL LIGHTS WILL TURN OFF UNEXPECTEDLY. BIG SAFETY HAZARD FOR DRIVING AT NIGHT.

THIS ALSO HAPPENS RANDOMLY AT NIGHT WHEN CHANGING LANES (USING TURN SIGNAL) AND I MUST QUICKLY TURN THEM ON MANUALLY. IT IS VERY FRIGHTENING AND HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES SO I TOOK IT TO CHANTILLY HYUNDAI AND THEY COULD NOT RECREATE IT SO DID NOTHING. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE AND HAS BEEN REPORTED TO THE NHTSA 5 TIMES, BY DIFFERENT PEOPLE ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE.

THE HEADLIGHTS WILL GO OUT INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING. IT HAPPENS WHEN THE TURN SIGNAL IS ON. IT HAS HAPPENED THE VEHICLE IS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT/STOP SIGN, AND WHEN THE VEHICLE IS ON THE HIGHWAY OR SEXONDARY ROADS. IT IS VERY UN NERVING BECAUSE YOU DONT KNOW WHEN IT MIGHT HAPPEN. IT HAS BEEN IN THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES TO BE REPAIRED BUT IT ATILL HAS THE SAME ISSUE. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI CORP ABOUT 25 DAYS AGO AND THEY STILL HAVE NOT SCHEDULED THE CAR IN TO BE CHECKED OUT. THEY ARE NOT TAKING THIS SERIOUS AT ALL. IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN TO US.

WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH ON A HIGHWAY AT NIGHT ALL THE INTERIOR LIGHTING, DASH, AND HEADLIGHTS WENT COMPLETELY OUT FOR THREE SECONDS THEN CAME BACK ON. WE SLOWED DOWN BUT THIS HAPPENED THREE TIMES BEFORE WE REACHED OUR DESTINATION. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO WAS ABLE TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM AND REPAIR THE CAR.

HEADLIGHTS ARE SET IN 'AUTO' MODE, BUT ERRATICALLY/SPORADICALLY WITH NO RHYME OR REASON, THEY WILL SHUT OFF, THEN TURN ON. ONE TIME I WAS ABLE TO RECORD THE EVENT ON MY PHONE (AVAILABLE IS REQUESTED). BUT ANOTHER TIME THEY TURNED OFF THEN ON (LIKE I WAS FLASHING MY LIGHTS) WHILE DRIVING. ANOTHER CAR WAS TRYING TO ENTER TRAFFIC AND THOUGHT I WAS FLASHING HIM TO ENTER, RESULTING WITH ME HARD-BRAKING TO AVOID HITTING THE ENTERING CAR. THIS 'FLASHING' OF LIGHTS HAS HAPPENED ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION, BUT I CAN'T DUPLICATE ON DEMAND (WHICH IS WHY THE HYUNDAI DEALER IS STATING THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THIS IS A DRIVING SAFETY ISSUE. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, BUT I INDICATED THE LATEST BELOW.
