Owner-reported complaints naming the brake system, filed with NHTSA
Data refreshed
Brakes reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Front brake rotors warped causing violent brake pedal pulsating and steering wheel vibration. My vehicle has only 18000 miles. The dealership Hyundai reported problem as a service bulletin TSB 23-BR-004H. I believe this a safety issue and a recall should be annouced.

On XXX, while approaching a stop sign, the vehicle did not engage the brakes as expected. I had to press the brake pedal multiple times, and the vehicle jerked several times before it came to a stop. Given that a brake failure of this kind poses an immediate risk to my safety and the safety of others on the road, I had the vehicle towed in for service right away. I took the vehicle to Courtesy Hyundai of Tampa (3810 W Hillsborough Ave, Tampa, FL 33614) on Monday, XXX (Repair Order #XXX). Service Advisor Dominick DeLeva documented the complaint and had the vehicle test driven. The dealership's notes state that the issue could not be duplicated, no fault codes were present, and the brake fluid level was correct. A multi-point inspection was also completed. The vehicle was returned to me on July 14, 2026, with no repairs made and no explanation for the braking irregularity I experienced. My 2022 Hyundai Tuscon came to a complete stop on the highway in Colorado twice in the last 2 months for no apparent reason. There weren't any obstacles or cars in front of me that would have caused the car to brake suddenly. I had passengers in the car and we were jolted forward. The air bags did not inflate and we were not hit from behind, but we could have been severely injured or killed. There are numerous "phantom braking" reports like this here on the NHTSA site for the 2022 model as well as more recent models. Yet Hyundai has only issued recalls for the 2025 and 2026 models. How are you addressing this issue?

On 3 occasions over my 18-month ownership of this certified pre-owned Hyundai 2022 Tucson, the vehicle surged suddenly forward WITH BRAKE APPLIED at creeping (parking) speeds of 3-4 mph. No warning lamps were observed. On the most recent (3rd) occasion, a crash over a sidewalk and into a storefront caused $10,000 damage. No pedestrians were harmed, no airbags deployed and neither passenger was harmed. The service department is "unable to duplicate" the surging behavior and declares the car mechanically "safe to drive."

Unintended acceleration, brakes unable to stop vehicle. Almost hit a car stopped at red light. I was able steer right avoiding hitting the stopped car and quickly put the car in neutral and then applied the brakes again. I was able to drive home another 10 miles. I had the car towed on 5/18/2026 to the car dealership for inspection. This put the car stopped and me and my wife at risk of injury. Car dealership has inspected the car and can not duplicate the problem. No warning lights before the event.

When braking my 2022 Hyundai Tucson to come to a stop, the vehicle continues to accelerate. I have to release the brake and re-apply the brake to fix the acceleration problem. I check the internet on this problem. They internet says it is a software problem. The vehicle shows no code and the dealer says they don't have a problem. The dealer has not check for the problem since there is no code. No warning lamps or messages show up on dash. This happened 4 times in the last few months. Latest date was 4-4-2026

I was driving down the highway going about 60-65mph with cruise control and LKA on. I turned my blinker on to switch lanes, checked my blind spot, and moved over to the left. As I was doing so, a semi switched lanes from the left into the right (my new lane) right in front of me. The truck then slowed down a lot, and usually my Forward Collision Warning would say something if my Adaptive Cruise Control isn’t on (or is and I’m just going too fast to slow down) neither of those things happened. No warning. No automatic brakes. No slowing down. I tried to engage the brakes manually but nothing happened. I slammed into a semi at around 60mph because of 3 different system failures. Not only did I hit the semi at 60~mph, apparently my brakes didn’t work at all and I spun out until I hit the concrete barrier on the highway. If my brakes had engaged automatically, I could have slowed down enough to avoid the collision altogether. And if they had engaged manually I could have at least minimized the damage to my vehicle (and myself) because I wouldn’t have hit the concrete barrier as well.

Vehicle randomly activated automatic emergency braking and the forward collision warning with no other vehicles in sight. The vehicle slammed on the brakes almost causing a trailing car to rear end our vehicle. This has happened 5 times with speeds between 40 and 80 mph over the past 4 weeks. Conditions were cloudy. Problem has not been reproduced by the dealorship. No inspections have occurred.

It’s been three years now and I had “Brake system failure” happened two times in 3 years. When traveling the brake system warning appears and while driving, and stopped at sign brake releases slightly and car would start to move unless I apply brakes firmly again. When slowing down at traffic lights holding the brake doesn’t bring car to complete stop. I had apply brake, slightly release and then apply again until car comes to full stop. I was told they need to replace IEB module and brake pedal module replacement. I checked in Reddit and other platforms where users had seen the issue multiple times on their vehicles. Also had an issue with Fuel system like replacement of Egr valve which seems to be common on multiple Vehicles.

I took the vehicle to the service station because it takes a long time to stop, and I braked close to a vehicle on several occasions. They replaced the brake pads, and when I took the baby in, it was worse. When they finally agreed to let me take the baby in for another inspection, they said they would have to remove and reinstall the parts. Two months later, my baby started doing the same thing.

Crash reported
During a recent accident, the driver pressed the brakes but they did not respond, almost as if they locked up. Police at the scene noted there were no skid marks on the road, suggesting the brakes never engaged. The vehicle suffered major side impact damage, including broken windows and crushed passenger-side doors, but none of the airbags deployed. This raises serious concerns about a possible brake system failure and airbag non-deployment defect. The vehicle has not yet been repaired and is available for inspection. Police have reviewed the accident, and the insurance company has also seen the vehicle, but no mechanical inspection has been completed by the manufacturer. There were no warning lights or error messages prior to the failure. The safety of the driver and passengers was put at risk because the car could not be stopped and the airbags did not deploy to provide protection.

The vehicle's brake system intermittently fails after driving over bumps or uneven roads. The brake pedal becomes soft and unresponsive, and the vehicle continues rolling forward for several seconds before the brakes finally engage. This has happened repeatedly while driving home from work. On one occasion, the vehicle rolled through a red light and I had to swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid a collision. This issue first became noticeable in 2022 and has worsened over time. It puts both my safety and the safety of others at serious risk. There are no warning lights or error messages before or during the failure. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Independent mechanics have confirmed that brake pads, rotors, and fluid levels are in good condition. They suggested the cause could be air in the brake lines, a malfunctioning ABS system, or a faulty master cylinder—all potentially covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. The manufacturer’s service center initially refused to inspect the vehicle without an upfront diagnostic fee and only offered assistance after I escalated the matter through repeated complaints. The service director later described the issue as “unsettling but normal,” which is not accurate according to independent professionals. The problem has not been resolved and continues to occur regularly. I am requesting that this be formally investigated as a potential safety defect.

While driving approximately 75 mph in the passing lane on highway, the vehicle suddenly automatically brake. Pulled back into the right lane and didn't really understand what happened. Next time i pulled out to pass and had a car on my right hand side it did the same thing. Pulled back into right hand lane and stayed there for quite some time. I then turned off the all around sensor @ and it didnt do it again but as i got closer to home the warning light came on and a message popped up. It now has the triangle caution sign on and the picture of car icon in amber. I had driven the car from my home for about 50 miles and parked car for two hours, the drove back toward home for about 20 miles when the event happened. It was dangerous and makes not want to use any of the "assist system's" going forward. I plan to wash the car today to see if the lights will go off- if they don't then i shall call dealer on Monday. This occurred on saturday. Ill be washing car today (sunday). If i had anyone driving closely behind me, i for sure would have been rear ended.

Purchased a brand new 2022 tucson. Within 2 months it went to the dealer with about 7 dash fault lights turning on (abs, Air bag, lane assist, check engine, just to name a few) and breaks engage on their own. Stayed at the dealership for over 2 months while they had the Hyundai engineers try to figure out the issue. They gave it back to me and said it was a connector in the rear door. The vehicle has been back 4 times for the same exact issues for months at a time and they keep experimenting and giving it back to me. I tried to get it exchanged for a safer one and they denied my request. I guess my families safety isn't that important to hyundai after all.

While driving the car the engine died, locking up both the gas and brake pedals. The car had to come to a stop on its own, my wife could not depress the gas or brake to stop the car. She was going through an intersection and narrowly avoided a major accident! The battery light came on, the check engine light and the car started to fill up with a smell of burning plastic and gas. When trying to turn the car back on after turning it off it would start with a major shake and bang then turn back off. All warning lights stayed on. Battery was fully charged still. Autobody shop found engine issues in their pre scan before sending it to Hyundai to warranty it as it only has 6,626 miles and is 2 years old. There was a warning of low battery while we were on vacation and the car was sitting for a few days. And a sluggish start when it sat for few days like the battery was low, but it wasn’t based on the volt meter.

I was coming back from the mall on the highway doing 50mph and my truck started losing power which it has done before but this time the emergency brake came on and my truck stopped in the middle of the highway on a Saturday. Thank God no one was following me close because that would have caused a bad accident. And also sometimes after I stop at a light or stop sign my brakes harden and I can’t press them down if that makes since and all my needles move back and fourth while the engine is making a noise but the car is still in drive but will not move. I have to hit the button to turn the car off and restart it and this has happened to me 3 times already. This is very frustrating and scary

My pregnant wife’s 2022 Hyundai Tucson lost engine power while on the interstate with our 16 month toddler in the car. Luckily she was able to get off the interstate and into a safe parking lot. The car only has 23000 miles and has been kept up with Hyundai’s scheduled maintenance from their dealership. The engine is knocking and experiencing rough idle. Once I arrived I was able to read that there was an engine cylinder 2 misfire. About an hour later the “MyHyundai” app sent the same error codes. It took the tow truck driver 15 minutes to go 10 feet to the flat bed as the car would turn its self off. Incredibly dangerous for a car less than two years old. I hate that I might’ve gotten my wife and son such a dangerous vehicle.

Fire reported
It was around 7 in the morning and I was getting ready for work. My garage door was open. A neighbor started pounding on my front door telling me my garage was on fire. I opened the door from my kitchen to the garage and seen smoke but it didn't seem major. I grabbed my keys and ran outside to pull my car out of the garage. I started the car and put it in reverse. It didn't want to move so I floored it. Once I got it into the driveway I heard the neighbors yell, "Lady! Get out of the car! The car is on fire!" I jumped out and seen the car was fully engulfed and had spread to the roof of the house. I grabbed the waterhose. It was of no help so I ran into the house to get my children out. Our home and everything in it were a total loss. Also my daughters car. Two of our dogs ran away. The car has been inspected by State Farm. They stated that the fire started in the engine compartment; the right front drivers side. Electrical; most likely the ABS. There were no warnings lights or symptoms. We only had the car for 5 months, it had 8000 miles on it. The oil had been changed at the Hyundai dealership just 5 weeks prior. I have talked to numerous people with Hyundai's that have caught fire, but not a 2022 as of yet. We have signed releases for Hyundia to inspect the car in February but they have not. It is still at the local tow yard. They are also supposed to inspect the house. They have offered to buy the car back but we have not agreed. We believe we are entitled to more compensation than that. I also have videos taken by neighbors and ring doorbells.
