2016 Hyundai Veloster Fuel system Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the fuel system system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Fuel system reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that gas fumes were entering inside the vehicle and exhaust fumes were present while driving the vehicle and while the vehicle was parked. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic on several occasions and to several dealers; however, the cause of the failure was not yet determined. The master cylinder was replaced, and the high-pressure fuel pump was replaced due to a reported internal fuel leak, but the failure persisted. The contact stated that while refueling the vehicle at a gas station, fuel leaked from the vehicle with a strong fuel odor. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 19,000.

While driving my 2016 Hyundai Veloster (VIN: [XXX] ) on the highway, the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration. I went from 60 mph down to 20 mph with no throttle response, and the car only continued moving briefly from momentum. I was forced to stop in unsafe highway conditions and had the vehicle towed home. Prior to this complete failure, the car had recurring transmission/drive issues: it would start, but when placed in reverse it moved backward, and when shifted into drive it still only moved backward. Despite repeated repair attempts, the problems persisted. A certified mechanic later inspected the vehicle and confirmed severe internal engine damage, including metallic noises, blue smoke, oil leakage from worn piston rings, and complete compression loss. The mechanic concluded the vehicle requires deep engine repair or replacement. These failures are consistent with widespread reports of Hyundai Veloster engine defects, which pose serious safety risks to drivers. My vehicle is now inoperable despite responsible maintenance and repeated attempts to fix the issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I am the second owner of a 2016 Hyundai Veloster Base, purchased used at approximately 19,976 miles. Since then, the vehicle has experienced multiple major powertrain-related failures. At 49,196 miles, the first catalytic converter failed and was replaced. Later, both the engine and second catalytic converter were replaced by Kearny Mesa Hyundai, a certified Hyundai dealership in San Diego, CA. When I brought the vehicle to Kearny Mesa Hyundai, there were no warning lights or active diagnostic trouble codes. However, the dealership’s service documentation stated that a P0420 code (catalyst system efficiency below threshold) was present — a code that was not active when I dropped off the vehicle, raising concerns about diagnostic accuracy or documentation. Now, at 61,982 miles, I brought the vehicle to Hyundai Ontario due to delayed shifting and hesitation when accelerating. The dealership diagnosed internal transmission failure and quoted approximately $5,000 for repairs. There were no warning lights or codes detected, meaning this diagnosis is based solely on driving symptoms. The failure of two catalytic converters, the engine, and now the transmission — all within approximately 42,000 miles of ownership — raises serious concerns about the long-term reliability of this vehicle and possible manufacturing defects. The transmission symptoms pose a serious safety risk, especially when merging or accelerating into traffic. I am requesting that this vehicle be investigated for potential systemic issues affecting its powertrain components.

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while driving approximately 70 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a Midas where it was diagnosed and determined that the fuel pressure regulator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 119,000. The VIN was unavailable.

Shortly after finishing major repairs at my local dealer, I started to expirience, what I believe, now, to be a "low-end engine knock". Engine knock can usually occur due to oil starvation, where the connecting rod bearings are worn and debris enters the engine. So, I brought my car back to the dealer to ask them what this strange noise was I was hearing; I asked them if it could be the brand new clutch, or their equipment they left in the engine bay for me. They gave me an answer and it was to not drive the car anymore. One employee of the dealer even suggested "wrapping it around a telephone pole"... They told me what the repairs would cost and I had not qualified for a warranty extention so I left. I acquired a definitive diagnostic elsewhere and was shown the gravity of the situation. My oil filter had caught pieces of the engine and it was dubbed an engine knock. This incident took me completely by surprise. I regularly changed my oil and never saw my levels get so low that they would be considered empty. I have only owned the car for 5 years and it being only 8 years old, I was hoping to enjoy the driving expirience for years to come. That sensation has been replaced with apprehension and possible engine fire... how do I afford to buy a new car every 5 years if I can't drive the one I have now??

I took my car to a dealer called Lee Johns in Everett WA for 2 recalls, but they told me I had problems with my catalytic converter and they replaced it under warranty at no cost to me. After 2 days they gave me the car and it did not work more than 2 hours and the engine light started blinking and from one moment to another it reduced the speed to 20 miles per hour. I called the dealer and they told me to take them, but to this day they only replied that the car warranty would only cover 55% for the replacement of the damaged engine. They gave me the defective car after they changed the catalyst and I gave them a working car that now doesn't work and they only tell me that I have to pay 4000usd so that they can repair it and they haven't given me any report of the engine revision because It failed, after they changed the catalyst, only telling me that I should pay and then make a claim or sue the manufacturer. I delivered my car to them on June 27 and to date they have it in their possession, leaving me unable to move and me having to assume the costs of renting and paying friends to pass their cars to me. I hope they can see my case since they wrecked my car.

Fire reported

ON 1/12/2020, WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET, THE VEHICLE STALLED OUT AND SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE ENGINE. WITHIN A MINUTE FIRE ERUPTED FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND THE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. I WAS GOING ABOUT 30 MILES AN HOUR IN VERY LIGHT TRAFFIC. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. THEY DETERMINED ONSITE THAT THE FIRE WAS DUE TO A FUEL LEAK. A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED. PRIOR TO THIS ON 10/3/2019 I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I THOUGHT THE VEHICLE WAS LEAKING GAS. THEY INSPECTED THE CAR AND SAID THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THEY DID NOT IDENTIFY ANY GAS LEAK. WE HAVE CONTACTED THEM SINCE THE FIRE AND THEY ARE DENYING ANY RESPONSIBILITY. THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER VEHICLE FIRES REPORTED ON HYUNDAIS.

SO WHEN LEAVING FROM A COMPLETE STOP IN DRIVE LETTING OFF THE BRAKE PETAL, AND LETTING THE VEHICLE START ROLLING ITSELF IN DRIVE WILL START VIBRATING AND MAKING CLUNKING METAL NOISES. WILL KEEP DOING IT UNLESS I EITHER DO TWO OF THE FOLLOWING THINGS STEP ON THE ACCELERATOR PETAL, OR PUSH ON THE BREAKS AND COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. AND WHEN THE VEHICLES FRONT WHEELS ARE TURNED WHEN TAKING OFF FROM A STOP IT'S 2 TIMES WORSE. IT DOES IT ABOUT 2-3 TIMES DAILY. I'VE TAKEN IT TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TO FIX UNDER THE WARRANTY AND THEY CLAIM THAT EVERYTHING IS NORMAL. DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS POSSIBLE THO BECAUSE OF THE PERSISTENT PROBLEM I KEEP FACING. PLEASE MAYBE LOOK INTO THIS AS SOMETHING SEND NOT RIGHT.

Crash reported

IN SEPTEMBER 2017 I WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT IN WHERE MY 2016 HYUNDAI VELOSTER BASE WAS T-BONED ON THE RIGHT REAR SIDE BY AN INFINITI SUV. I HAD FILED A PREVIOUS COMPLAINT WITH THE CALIFORNIA ATTORNEY GENERAL AGAINST HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA AND ALSO A COMPLAINT AGAINST HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA THEMSELVES. MY COMPLAINT WAS BASED ON THE FACT THAT MY VEHICLE WAS STRUCK AT A SPEED OF GREATER THAN 30 MILES PER HOUR AND LESS THAN 60 MILES PER HOUR AND THAT THE DAMAGES DONE TO MY VEHICLE WERE RIGHT ON THE RIGHT REAR AIRBAG SENSOR BUT NONE OF MY AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THERE HAS ALSO BEEN A LINGERING ODOR OF LEAKING GAS BUT HYUNDAI REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO TAKE FAULT. SINCE THAT I HAVE HAD SEVERE MIGRAINES AND DEVELOPED REALLY BAD ARTHRITIS IN BOTH ARMS AND BOTH SHOULDERS. MY PREVIOUS INSURANCE COMPANY PAID OUT MORE MONEY TO THE PEOPLE THAT HIS ME AND DEEMED THE ACCIDENT A 50/50 FAULT ON BOTH PARTIES. EVEN THOUGH THE FAULT WAS ON BOTH PARTIES, THAT HAS NO BEARING ON A FAULTY AIRBAG SENSOR NOR DOES IT HAVE ANY BEARING ON HYUNDAI'S RIGHT TO NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME. WHAT I HAD REQUESTED OF HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA PREVIOUSLY WAS PAYOFF OF MY CURRENT VEHICLE OR A NEW VEHICLE THAT DOESN'T HAVE FAULTY EQUIPMENT.

VELOSTER TURBO DCT MODEL. WHEN THE CAR ISN'T FULLY WARMED UP, THE CAR SUDDENLY LOSES POWER UPON MEDIUM TO HARD ACCELERATION. PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR INCREASES ENGINE REVS AND TRANSMISSION ACTUALLY SHIFTS, BUT NO POWER IS BEING PUT TO THE WHEELS. YOU HAVE TO FULLY LIFT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND THEN DEPRESS AGAIN TO GET POWER BACK. FOR EXAMPLE, ACCELERATING TO MERGE INTO FREEWAY TRAFFIC IS DANGEROUS AS IT LOSES POWER AS YOU ARE MERGING AND COULD EASILY BE REAR ENDED. OR TURNING LEFT ACROSS TRAFFIC, IF THE VEHICLE LOSES POWER MID TURN YOU COULD BE HIT BY ONCOMING TRAFFIC. HAPPENS EVERY TIME YOU HAVE MEDIUM TO HARD ACCELERATION WHEN THE VEHICLE ISN'T FULLY WARMED UP. HAS HAPPENED TOO MANY TIMES TO NUMBER. THERE IS VIDEO DOCUMENTATION ON THE INTERNET OF SAME PROBLEM.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 HYUNDAI VELOSTER. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE GEAR SHIFTER WAS UNABLE TO SHIFT FROM THE NEUTRAL POSITION. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, TURNED THE ENGINE OFF, AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT NOTICED A FUEL ODOR AND NOTICED FUEL LEAKING FROM THE FUEL TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO RICK CASE HYUNDAI (3550 WESTON RD, DAVIE, FL, (954) 994-2397) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 24,000.

BEEN A YEAR FIGHTING HYUNDAI AND WENT TO ARBITRATION YESTERDAY. STILL SAYING ISOLATED INCIDENT AND CAR IS FUNCTIONING AS INTENDED ALRHOUGH THEY PAID FOR A 2ND TRANSMISSION AT 12K MILES. STILL MISSING SHIFTS, REVING UP TO REDLINE WHILE NOT PICKING UP SPEEF AND CUTTING OUT WHILE PULLING FROM STOPS INTO TRAFFIC. SEVERE SAFETY CONCERN TO SAY THE LEAST. IF THE DCT FAILED AND IS PART OF THE LARGEST RECALL IN HYUNDAI HISTORY, DON'T YOU THINGTHEY SHOULD BE TAKING A LOOK AT OUR DCT TRANSMISSIONS? I FEEL SWEPT UNDER THE RUG AND MY CONCERNS FOR OUR FAMILIES SAFETY ATE BEING OVERLOOKED. I FOUND QUITE A FEE OWNERS ON THE VELOSTER NATION AND OHIO VELOSTER FORUMS WITH EXACT COMPLAINTS. HYUNDAI REFUSED MY SUBMISSIONS FROM THESE FORUMS AS WELL AS NHTSA COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME NATURE. SHAMEFUL ON THEIR PART.

THE RPM'S REV TO 6500, BUT THE CAR DOES NOT MOVE. WHEN TRYING TO ENTER THE EXPRESS WAY CAR DOES NOT SHIFT RIGHT, RPM REVS TO 6500, AND DOES NOT SHIFT TO THE NEXT GEAR. I FEAR FOR MY LIFE WHEN ENTERING ANY HIGHWAY. THE CAR CAN'T EVEN PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE GOING 40MPH. DEALER SAYS NOTHING IS WRONG!!! ALSO WHEN TURNING A CORNER VEHICLE HESITATES TO ACCELERATE, THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS VEHICLE, I DO NOT FEEL SAFE WHEN I DRIVE IT. SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE ELECTRONIC SHIFTING MODULE I THINK. I HOPE THAT THIS COMPLAINT WILL LET OTHERS KNOW THAT THIS VEHICLE HAS ACCELERATION ISSUES. THE DEALER TOLD ME ON MY LAST VISIT THE EVERYONE COMPLAINS ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE.

RECENTLY THERE WAS A RECALL ISSUES FOR THE 2016 TUCSON DCT. MY 2016 VELOSTER TURBO DCT HAS HAD THE IDENTICAL ISSUES, WHICH BEGAN JUST A FEW MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR BRAND NEW. IT'S BEEN IN AND OUT OF THE DEALERSHIP FOR 5 MONTHS NOW, TOTALING OVER 70 DAYS. THERE HAVE BEEN GAS ISSUES - GAS FUMES SMELL OUTSIDE AND INSIDE VEHICLE, LOSING GAS ABNORMALLY FAST WHEN DRIVING, GAS TANK NOT FILLING TO FULL. THE AC RATTLES INTERMITTENTLY AND HAS BLOWN HEAT OFF AND ON. MOST IMPORTANTLY IS THE SAFETY REGARDING THE 7 SPEED DUAL CLUTCH TRANSMISSION. IT IS INTERMITTENT, BUT I HAVE CAPTURED IT ON CAMERA THREE TIMES - ONCE PRIOR TO THE TRANSMISSION PARTS BEING REPLACED, AND THEN THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION. AND TWICE AFTER THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED. JUST LAST FRIDAY, I COULDN'T DRIVE THE VEHICLE BECAUSE IT SEIZED TO SHIFT AND ACCELERATE PROPERLY FIVE TIMES IN A ROW, THE MOST IT HAS EVER HAPPENED. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS PLACED BACK INTO A RENTAL. TODAY, THE DEALERSHIP SAYS "THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG" (THIS HAS BEEN SAID OVER THE COURSE OF 5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT'S INTERMITTENT) AND THEY'RE FORCING ME TO RETURN THE RENTAL - LEAVING ME WITH UNSAFE TRANSPORTATION YET AGAIN. I'VE RISKED MY LIFE FOR MONTHS TRYING TO CAPTURE VIDEO PROOF, AND I HAVE SENT THE VIDEO PROOF TO HYUNDAI - YET THEY ARE STILL MAKING MY RETURN THE RENTAL AND ARE NOT FIXING THE VEHICLE, NOR DO THEY HAVE A FIX FOR IT (ALREADY REPLACED THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION AND COMPUTER!!). THIS IS A VIDEO I CREATED AND UPLOADED TO YOUTUBE, SUMMARIZING SOME OF WHAT'S GONE ON AND THE VIDEO PROOF I HAVE. HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=1Y3ECBR07EM I HAVE OPENED A CASE WITH NEVADA CONSUMER AFFAIRS WHO HAS ALREADY REVIEWED MY CASE AND TRIED NEGOTIATING WITH HYUNDAI. THEY HAVE INSTRUCTED ME TO OPEN A CASE WITH NHTSA AND THE DMV.
