What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2022 Jeep Cherokee, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Previously reported that my vehicle was throwing the code for the 40D. I returned today, vehicle vehicle start to slam, jerk. Jeep Cares escalated after dealership tech confirmed active failure. Fuse pulled, but can't really drive my car to avoid damages. Now waiting for them to give dealership approval to order part. I still have the 5,/60 Warranty. It's red tape and leaving me driving a dangerous vehicle or be grounded. I'm now waiting fit the case manager to call dealership. This is very upsetting and I blame Chrysler, but the actual dealership. There are 61k vehicles and no scene of urgency. I'm filing the complaint.
My 4wd service light is on and apparently there is a recall on jeep for this. I should have recall I have less than 32000 miles on my vehicle
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
Smell antifreeze occasionally and have had to add occasionally. Car only has 18,085 miles. 2022. Spoke to my mechanic and he said it could potentially be a bad oil cooler gasket or a cracked manifold. Have smelled this for at least a year or longer

Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Battery went dead after 4 days of being parked. Preceded by car not charging fully after driving. Dealer had to replace battery at 60,000 miles with no other fault detected. After market battery did not fix problem. Needed to be replaced by OEM battery. Still noticed not charging fully after driving. High current drain while off and parked detected. One dark night noticed dash screen came on with no key around the car then went off then cycled back on. All car modules did not shutdown. Suspected Uconnect app needed to be updated or was corrupted. Later Bluetooth would not connect to phone so I could update the program. Called Uconnect and technician said it could only be updated by dealer. On-line noticed this is a very widely reported problem that batteries are going dead for no apparent reason. Causes many other systems not to function like AntiSkid braking. Due to low battery voltage. No recall has been issued on this vehicle to make it mandatory for the manufacturer to correct the deficient software that won’t allow the modules to shut down when the vehicle is off. Associated trouble report and fix. 2024 WL/WS/DT/JL/JT/GG/GC/DJ/D2 (Includes PHEV Variants) 2023 WL/WS/DT/GG/DJ/D2/DD/DP – Battery Drain after UCONNECT activation Removing the TBM Fuse will resolve the IOD. This is a known issue and is under investigation. Part replacement will not resolve this issue. Refer to SOL S2408000010 for more information.
Today May 20, 2024 we called the NHTS to inform that we did received the notification from the manufacturer indicating that there is indeed an important safety recall which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. In the same letter the manufacturer states that The remedy for this condition is currently unavailable. When asking about what is considered a reasonable amount of time to solve this issue we were told that around July 20, 2024 we should expect a letter with the official findings. We are just writing this report to show that we are aware of the situation and awaiting the official resolution.

Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
On [XXX], we were traveling from Seattle to Portland on [XXX] in my 2022 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with the cruise control set at around 75 mph. Suddenly the emergency collision braking system applied and all of the lights on my vehicle lit up. While the braking system was being applied the cruise control was simultaneously applying gas resulting in the vehicle RPM redlining on multiple occasions. Fortunately, the weather was good, traffic was light, and I was able to maintain control of the vehicle to pull over once a vehicle in the slow lane passed. When stopped the engine light was on, along with an alarm for loss of electronic stability control (ESC), and an alarm for brake service. After clearing the ESC alarm by restarting my vehicle multiple times as indicated in the owner's manual I tried to operate the vehicle. However, the vehicle would not move properly in to drive (noise and felt like the brake was applied). We then decided to contact Jeep roadside assistance for an emergency tow covered by the warranty. We towed the vehicle to the nearest Jeep dealership which was closed for the weekend. On Monday, the dealership informed us that the power transfer unit (PTU) had failed and would need to be replaced. Regarding additional mechanical damage, a determination could not be made until the PTU was replaced. On Tuesday, the dealership advised that the PTU was on an engineering hold until March 20th as the part was now being produced by a new vendor. At this time it appears my vehicle will be inoperable for more than a month until the part is released from the engineering hold. I am concerned that PTU failure is a serious safety defect similar to what has occurred in past model years of the Jeep Cherokee. Your website has some trouble & won't accept my jpg files. First time to see this. I use cruise control all the time on 3 vehicles I own. But, this JEEP has a strange problem that is not safe. Almost all vehicles I have driven with cruise controls will exceed set speed by 1~3mph while going down a steep hill. But my JEEP will exceed by 5~7mph on steep hills. I have turned off cruise control when it didn't control speed and drove manually for a while, then used cruise control again. If I set at 70mph, often speed will increase to 75~77mph going downhill; then brakes will engage strongly (hard braking) and JEEP will quickly go below 70 mph. JEEP will brake hard, go to or below 70mph then speed up some then brake hard again! Two-three times I had 18 wheelers behind me going down steep hill when I was using cruise control, JEEP quickly reached 75~77mph, then suddenly brakes clamped down with a lot of force and big trucks had to hit their brakes hard and were not far from my rear bumper. I do watch in rear view mirror often when driving. There are a lot of hills in my area of East Texas. I also watch out for smaller vehicles also when I use cruise control, especially going downhill. I took JEEP to a dealer Jan. 24, 2024 in Palestine, TX 75801 to check excessive carbon SOOT in tailpipes, coming out of muffler. And, I told service Mgr. about bad cruise control braking. They did nothing. Now, see Elliott JEEP dealer Service Invoice [XXX]. Dealer wasn't interested in looking a cruise control problem. He checked only excessive soot problem and maybe did a multipoint inspection. Also, this JEEP couldn't possible pass an EPA emissions control. I THINK THERE ARE SOME REAL DEFECTS IN MAIN CONTROL MODULE!!!! DEFECTIVE SPEED OR CRUISE CONTROL. DEFECTIVE AIR/FUEL SENSOR CONTROL MAKING A LOT OF SOOT. DISPLAY DEFECTIVE FOR GASOLINE & TEMPERATURE GUAGES IN DISPLAY. In 2023, I told different dealer about cruise control trouble and he didn't check anything, either. Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
My 2022 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is experiencing an active failure related to open Safety Recall 40D (NHTSA ID 26V290). The dashboard is displaying a persistent "Service 4WD" warning light, and the vehicle's four-wheel-drive system has completely disabled itself. The vehicle is currently trapped operating exclusively in front-wheel drive. The local dealership has inspected the vehicle but states they are legally blocked from performing a physical repair because manufacturer Stellantis has designated the recall status as "Remedy Under Development." I have filed an official complaint with the manufacturer under Jeep Corporate Case Number 97546678.I am filing this report because the manufacturer cannot provide a timeline for final physical parts, forcing me to operate a compromised vehicle with an active powertrain defect that carries a documented risk of a sudden loss of drive power or vehicle rollaway. I live in the Northeast and purchased this vehicle for its 4wD. I am nervous driving and it feels shady. I waited 3 hrs for a diagnostic test. They speed me the paper with the code, but did not give me the paperwork. I have a year left on my 5yr drive train, they would not discuss and I only have 31.5K miles in the vehicle. Also. With a loss of propulsion, I could be killed or kill someone else. That is the #1safety issue.
The vehicle stalled at a busy intersection during heavy traffic hours. No watnings or signs that could've prevented the incident were indicated by the vehicle. 911 was called in to aid in the traffic incident. Call [XXX] from Laredo Police department. Vehicle was pushed by the Police Officer and myself to a near by parking lot where the vehicle was towed to the dealership. Dealership experts noted leaks on some parts of the engine due to britle gaskets and the major mechanical failure was due to a faulty fuel pump. Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2022 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that the right turn signal fails to remain engaged intermittently. The failure had become more frequent as time progressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for another matter, and the owner was also informed about the failure. The dealer confirmed there was no recall attached. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact 24V239000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING, STEERING) expressed the same failure. The manufacturer was informed and confirmed that the VIN was not included the build date was 2 weeks out. The manufacturer referred the contact to the nhatsa hotline ot file a safety complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 29,000.
When activating the left turn signal both the left and right turn signal indicators began blinking. I had to cycle the turn signal switch both right and left and then to off to stop both indicators from blinking.

Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.

I am submitting this complaint regarding a persistent and unresolved issue with the left front axle of my 2022 Jeep Cherokee X, which has been present since the day I purchased the vehicle new. Shortly after purchase, I brought the vehicle to the dealership due to a noticeable clicking sound coming from the front end. The dealer retained the vehicle for several days but stated they were unable to identify the source of the noise, although they indicated that a repair had been performed. Immediately upon leaving the dealership, the clicking sound was still present. I returned the vehicle, at which point it remained in their possession for approximately one week. During that visit, components in the left front end were replaced. Approximately one year later, while pulling out of a driveway under normal driving conditions, the left axle failed completely. The vehicle had to be towed back to the dealership, where it remained for another week. I was informed that the CV joint had been replaced. Now, roughly one year after that repair, I brought the vehicle in for a routine oil change. During this visit, the service manager showed me that grease is actively leaking from the same left front axle. I am also once again hearing the same clicking noise that initially prompted my first visit. This vehicle has low mileage, is driven approximately six miles per day, and is used primarily for local driving. It has never been used off-road and has not been subjected to any abnormal driving conditions or impacts. Given the repeated failures involving the same component, despite prior repairs, I am concerned about the safety and reliability of this vehicle. Additionally, this ongoing issue has significantly diminished the vehicle’s value, making it difficult to sell. I am extremely disappointed that a vehicle of this age and usage history continues to experience recurring axle failures without a lasting resolution.
Heated steering wheel suddenly became too hot with no adjustment option. Minor burning on hands. Turned off the function. Driver heated seat suddenly became too hot, turned down to low but still too hot, caused burns requiring medical attention.

Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
During an accident the driver side airbags did not deploy. The vehicle was rammed on the rear passenger wheel area. The impact was significant enough to have the curtain airbags on the passenger side go off, but the only person in the vehicle was myself, the driver.
The contact owns a 2022 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at 60 MPH, another vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and merged into oncoming traffic; as a result, the contact crashed into the vehicle. The contact stated that the air bags did not deploy upon impact. A fellow motorist, who witnessed the accident, assisted the contact by helping her into the front passenger seat and driving her vehicle off to the shoulder of the highway. The contact called her parents to the scene of the accident, and she was taken to the hospital. The contact was given an X-ray and was treated for tissue swelling around her neck, collar bone, and chest; the contact also suffered light bruising around those same areas. The whereabouts of the other driver were unknown. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed from the scene to an independent tow yard, where it remained in their possession. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.

The car has over 18000 miles, in March 2025 we noticed a rattle at the right front area while going over rough roads. we took the car to the (Dealer Cerritos Jeep) and were told that the right front strut was (Broken ?) and it was under warrantee. Then was told the strut was out of production and it would be May 30 before they could get the replacement, May 30 was told that the all the parts did not arrive, we left the car there June 23, June 24 they said the design had changed and needed to get more mounting parts to install it. today we pick the car up QUESTION: I was taught that when replacing an suspension you don't replace just one, you replace two! my research says that it is still a practice today. The dealer is replacing only the right Strut, we are concerned the we have one questionable strut with 18000+ miles on and is in some way mechanically different then the new strut. The dealer stands on just replacing the one strut

Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.

We have 2022 Jeep Cherokee. The passenger visor falls out of the case hole causing a visual safety issue. This defect is casued by a poorly designed clip. The cost of the clip if over $950 with a total cost of $1025.73. We went to the dealership (Courtesy Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Superstition Springs Mesa Arizona 85206) and apparently it's a consistent problem with many of the Chrysler vehicles. This issue is needs to fixed with a manufacurer recall. Spoke with service agent Tommy who agreed this is a problem. 480-830-8001 I current have pushed the visor stem back into place but it will not stay in place
