My car blew an engine while I was inside the car. The car was in park and running in a parking lot when the parking brake automatically engaged unexpectedly. Then, the gauge cluster instructed me to press the brake and push the start/stop button. I then got a warning on my gauge cluster, this time notifying my car entered starter protection mode. Repeating the process three times, me, my four year-old daughter, and were put at high risk of suffering burns as my car started to give off a burning smell of oil, as well strong white smoke from the hood, and shut off the car and opened the hood to release the smoke. If I had waited longer, there would have been a fire. The car is available upon inspection and is currently at my local dealer as of 8/11/2026 (Thunder Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Bartow, Florida) for repairs. An engine failure was confirmed by discoveries by the dealer of a broken valve spring, a dropped cylinder, a cracked piston head, and an oil-coolant mixture. The dealer confirmed that this stemmed from Stellantis's faulty "Multi-Displacement System" (MDS) cylinder-deactivation system and "eTorque" mild-hybrid system. Both systems work together to save fuel at cruising speeds and stoplights. However, due to the constant cycling of both systems, they contribute to the excessive engine stress and oil pressure fluctuation, which are known for the "WS" Jeep Wagoneer, the "DT" RAM 1500, and the "WL" Grand Cherokee equipped with the 5.7L HEMI eTorque V8. The dealer relayed the issues to Stellantis North America, showing videos and photos of this catastrophic mechanical failure.

I own a 2022 Jeep Wagoneer with the 5.7L HEMI eTorque system. The vehicle has lost all power while being driven on two separate occasions. The first occurred on October 22, 2025, on a major interstate. The second occurred on January 30, 2026, on a state highway. In both cases the engine shut off without warning while the vehicle was in motion, with my wife and four children aboard. Power steering and braking assist were lost. The vehicle locked into Park, and I could not get power to shift into neutral or restart it. The January 30 incident required towing. The vehicle was inspected by a mechanic, who was unable to replicate the problem. Since the second failure, I have observed that system voltage drops rapidly during normal driving on nearly every trip. To avoid another shutdown in traffic, I now monitor voltage and pull over to shut the engine off and restart it once it reaches 12.4V. This takes several efforts each trip to pull over and restart the system. It has produced anxiety in my family about the safety of this vehicle. This is a full-size SUV losing power in highway traffic without warning. It endangers my family and every driver around us. I am aware of ODI Preliminary Evaluation PE24018 covering this vehicle and system, and I am submitting this so my incidents are part of that record.

While driving down the road, I came to a stop and the vehicle started flashing every light then would not restart or allow the vehicle to be put into neutral. Initially thought maybe a battery issue despite my new battery being only eight months old replaced the battery and all the electronics started going haywire requiring the vehicle to be towed.

While driving my 2022 Jeep Wagoneer at 40-45 mph on a live public road with my four small children in the vehicle, the vehicle suffered a sudden, catastrophic electronic and powertrain shutdown without warning. The engine completely died, and the vehicle immediately and forcefully engaged the electronic emergency parking brake, bringing the vehicle to an abrupt, unexpected halt in the middle of moving traffic.Once stopped, the vehicle completely refused to crank or restart. The electronic shifter and braking system effectively locked the vehicle in place, leaving me and my four young children dangerously stranded inside a dead vehicle in the middle of a live lane, creating an immediate, life-threatening collision hazard from oncoming traffic. The vehicle had to be physically towed away from the scene to a dealership, where it currently sits awaiting diagnosis.This vehicle has a documented history of prior electronic and dashboard glitches that the manufacturer has failed to permanently resolve under warranty. The sudden loss of propulsion combined with autonomous, unwanted emergency brake activation while in motion represents a severe, un-remedied safety defect that put the lives of my entire family at immediate risk.

While driving my car engine just shuts off without any warning. My car had a message on the dash after the engine stopped saying to shift the car to park and the emergency parking brake came on. I had to switch my four ways on in the middle of the road. If this happened on a busier street my vehicle would have been hit because I could not drive my car to the side of the road. It was just a dead stop without any notice there was a problem. No dash lights before the engine stopped or anything. Just messages stating to put the car in park after the problem. I have two little girls who are regularly in my vehicle with me and it is scary to think that my Wagoneer engine can just decide to shut off at anytime with no warning.

The vehicle experienced a charging system failure while driving. The battery warning light illuminated and battery voltage dropped to approximately 11.7 volts while the engine was running. The vehicle continued to discharge the battery while being driven, creating a risk of loss of electrical power and possible vehicle shutdown. Diagnostic trouble codes included P0562 (System Voltage Low), P0BDE (Drive Motor Inverter Temperature Sensor E Circuit High), and P0AEE (Drive Motor Inverter Temperature Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance). The charging system was inspected by an independent repair facility. The serpentine belt was verified to be functioning properly and related fuses were checked. The repair facility diagnosed a failure of the 48-volt eTorque Belt Starter Generator (Motor Generator Unit/MGU). The replacement part is reportedly on backorder. The condition is repeatable and occurs during normal driving. The battery warning lamp and low voltage condition were observed and documented. This failure creates a potential safety concern because the vehicle can lose charging capability while operating on public roads.

While my wife was operating our 2022 Jeep Wagoneer Series III (5.7L HEMI eTorque, ~44,700 miles) at highway speed, the vehicle suffered a sudden and complete electrical power failure. Electric power steering cut out completely while the vehicle was in motion, creating an immediate safety hazard and nearly causing an accident. The vehicle was disabled and required towing. The dealership (Safford Jeep) diagnosed fault code P0B32: catastrophic internal hardware and voltage failure of the 48-volt eTorque Hybrid Battery Pack. The 12-volt battery was also destroyed as a consequence of the 48V pack failure — the 12V charges exclusively via a DC-to-DC converter fed by the 48V loop; when the pack failed, the converter lost power and the 12V battery was starved of charge. NOTE: This incident is consistent with the active NHTSA ODI preliminary evaluation of 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Ram 1500 eTorque electrical failures. FCA/Stellantis has acknowledged these failures are likely caused by an electrical concern. My P0B32 event represents a catastrophic failure of the exact system under investigation, with the additional safety consequence of complete loss of power steering at highway speed. Stellantis Corporate Case #96719164 is open. The vehicle has been repaired (48V battery pack replaced) but Stellantis has declined to address the warranty access barrier created by their diagnostic system architecture. The dealer's equipment required a new 12-volt battery installation before it could communicate with the covered hybrid system — a $645 mandatory prerequisite to accessing a Federal Emissions Warranty repair.

I was driving about 10mph around a turn and the motor turned off and I had to park to start the motor again. When I came to a complete stop the car engaged it's parking break and suddenly jerked forward. This has happened several times in the last year and this time I was the driver of the vehicle. The vehicle flashed a critical low battery warning while in operation driving. After traveling approximately 2 miles further, the vehicle warning lights started flashing and the vehicle shifted into park and shut off. In the middle of the road the vehicle could not be shifted into neutral and was stuck in a dangerous place. The emergency flashers shut off after 15 minutes while waiting for a tow truck. This vehicle has had two battery replacements in the last two years.

During normal driving in temperatures below approximately 20–27°F, the vehicle began losing electrical charge as indicated by the malfunction indicator light (MIL) and battery warning message. While my wife was attempting to return home, multiple vehicle systems progressively shut down, including electric power steering, ABS, auto-leveling suspension, and lane departure assistance. As she was pulling into our driveway, the vehicle completely shut off, resulting in total loss of propulsion and power steering. The vehicle had to be towed to the dealership. This was the second occurrence of this failure. A third incident occurred the following day under similar temperature conditions. During that event, MIL and battery warnings appeared again during normal driving. She was able to reach our driveway before complete shutdown occurred. On the most recent incident, the following diagnostic trouble codes were present: P0EEC, P1618, P0008, and U0111. These are the same codes that were recorded during the previous two incidents. After the first two failures, Kernersville Dodge stated the issue had been repaired and charged us for the repairs. The same failure condition has now reoccurred. This failure results in sudden loss of propulsion and loss of power steering while driving, creating a significant safety hazard.

On two separate occasions within 2 months of each other, the low battery/voltage warning appeared and shortly thereafter, every warning light in the dash came on and various messages appeared on screen stating that there were power/electrical issues. The car then shut down and died while in motion. Extremely dangerous as in the first instance, the vehicle was in the White Mountains region of New Hampshire (on a main road, Rt. 16), with no cell reception, cold weather, and at night, leaving us stranded. The second occasion happened on a busy highway with my wife and young daughter in the car. We were able to get off the highway when the warning lights came on; however, the car died in Downtown Boston, at night, in the winter (December). the first time this happened, the car was towed, a "software update" was done, and we were back on the road. then less than 2 months later, the same thing happened, and is this time diagnosed as the eTorque motor. Hi, I need to bring my 2022 Wagoneer back in for service. I was just in the shop a few days ago for a persistent check engine light, and the issue has returned. The check engine light came back on four days after I picked up the vehicle. This morning the vehicle stalled twice at a complete stop. The front headlights flickered and the engine shut off, but the electronics inside stayed on. I had to press the Start button to restart the engine. I also received a “Start/Stop Unavailable” message. Because this is now a repeat failure, combined with a safety-related stall, I need the vehicle fully rechecked for: ESS/Start-Stop system malfunction Auxiliary battery condition Battery current sensor BMS/charging system PCM software updates Any TSBs related to stalling or ESS on the 2022 Wagoneer Please document this as a repeat repair attempt, and if needed, I would like this escalated to a Stellantis Case Manager since the issue is safety-related and occurred immediately after a previous repair. The vehicle indicated to stop and pull over when attempting to start it in the garage, it was not moving. It made a terrible grinding noise. Towed to the dealer with a failed battery and need to replace the Motor Generator Unit (MGU), part of its eTorque mild-hybrid system. The part is on back order for more than 45 days as there are more than 282 failures reported. This is a 2022 Jeep Wagoneer that the dealership is saying is out of warranty and will charge me $4,000 to fix.

For the third summer in a row, this vehicle has had a "hybrid/battery/engine" issue which has caused the vehicle to stop in the middle of traffic, specifically at start/stop intersections during high traffic times - the first time was on a vacation road trip about 600 miles away from home, the second time was in town while we had our three kids in the vehicle, and this most recent time thankfully I was alone driving home from work in rush hour. The vehicle shuts off, battery and check engine lights are illuminated and the vehicle must be stopped, restarted, and turned back on in order to move away from the middle of traffic. This is the third incident of this happening with Jeep warranty covering the first two repairs due to it being the hybrid/battery system. I am now waiting for two weeks before the dealer can even diagnoze the issue to undrstand what our next steps might be.

The E torque system needs replaced and the part has been on backorder for months. The dealer has no idea when the new part will be available and may be up to 7 months. The vehicle is loud which is what prompted us to take it in for evaluation. We had an incident where the vehicle while in reverse and it abruptly stopped and the emergency brake was on. It would not let me move my vehicle without turning it off and back on to allow me to continue reversing.
