2009 Kia Rondo Problems
Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component
Data refreshed
What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2009 Kia Rondo, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
No compression in cylinder 3 due to oil drainage in spark plug panel caused Loss of motive power and Almost a wreck so to vehicle shutting down on the interstate . As I look I see that this is in investigation already and needs to be took into consideration as soon as possible if our lives really matter to Kia as your customers . So very sad how the engines and fuel systems are on kias
EVERY TIME I GO THROUGH A SMALL PUDDLE I LOSE CONTROL OF STEERING THE VEHICLE. IT HAS HAPPENED BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY NUMEROUS TIMES, LASTS A FEW MINUTES AND THEN I REGAIN CONTROL OF STEERING. FORTUNATELY, IT'S HAPPENED ON MY STREET FOR THE MOST PART. LAST WEEK, SEPTEMBER 16, 2020, I WAS ON A VERY BUSY MAIN ROAD WHEN I WAS MAKING A RIGHT TURN INTO A SHOPPING CENTER. I TURNED RIGHT, WENT THROUGH A SMALL PUDDLE, AND LOST CONTROL OF STEERING. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO ONE BEHIND ME SO I SHIFTED BACKWARDS AND TRIED TO FORCE THE STEERING WHEEL WITH NO LUCK. I REPEATED GOING BACKWARDS AND AFTER A FEW ATTEMPTS THE STEERING FUNCTION CAME BACK. I'VE HAD THE DRIVE BELT REPLACED SO THAT CAN'T BE THE PROBLEM. I'VE RECENTLY HAD AN ALIGNMENT, TWO NEW TIRES INSTALLED, AND TIRES ROTATED. NOTHING WAS MENTIONED ABOUT ANY ISSUES. I TAKE MY VEHICLE TO THE SAME REPAIR SHOP AND HAVE HAD EVERYTHING CHECKED OUT. I KNOW THE VEHICLE IS OTHERWISE FUNCTIONING WELL. I WAS ON-LINE SEARCHING TO SEE IF OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME THING HAPPENING TO OTHER PEOPLE. THERE ARE NO RECALLS BUT I THINK THIS IS A SERIOUS ENOUGH PROBLEM THAT KIA SHOULD INVESTIGATE AND CORRECT.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
TIENE PRENDIDO LA LUZ DE BAGAIR Y LO LLEVE A LA AGENCIA NO LO QUISIERON CHECAR POR MODELO ANTIGUO Y TODAVA SE BURL DE QUE YA NO EXISTE EL MODELO.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2009 KIA RONDO. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A PARKED VEHICLE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED BRUISES TO THE CHEST AND RIBS THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A TOW LOT AND DEEMED DESTROYED. THE CONTACT CALLED SOUTHWEST KIA-ROCKWALL AT(469) 402-2900 (LOCATED AT 1790 I-30 FRONTAGE RD, ROCKWALL, TX 75087) TO NOTIFY THEM OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE NOT AVAILABLE.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2009 Kia Rondo. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and turned off, the exterior brake lights remained illuminated. Additionally, the ESC warning light was illuminated while driving. The contact had to depress the brake pedal three times to turn off the exterior brake lights. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
I had to replace the tires on this car several times in 3 years. They alarm had a glitch that the car would not start and you had to take it specifically to a Kia dealer to have they alarm reprogrammed. Even upon repairs to your local mechanic. Costing them more money and me more money because they could not get in the car by pass they alarm without using kia first to reprogram it. The brakes locked up. The lights woukd go off for airbag and stay on. The anti lick brake light would stay on .. Very dangerous. I had to spend more money to because of they alarm. Even just replacing the battery in the alarm remote cost more money for the remote and the programming of the remote . You could not just replace the battery. The tires and brakes gave me several issues in 3 years To the tube of close 3000. And that's being fair.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim

HEAD LAMPS, FOG LAMPS, AND BLINKERS WON'T TURN ON. WE CHANGED THE BULBS THINKING THEY HAD BLOWN. THE LIGHTS WOULDN'T COME ON WHEN CAR WAS RESTARTED.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim

Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 KIA RONDO. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, WATER MADE CONTACT WITH THE FUEL INTAKE VALVE AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STALL. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC STATED THAT THE FUEL INTAKE VALVE WAS TOO CLOSE TO THE WHEEL AND WAS NOT ABLE TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 73,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 KIA RONDO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP FAILED TO PUMP FUEL TO THE ENGINE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER (GRIECO HONDA LOCATED AT 1880 HARTFORD AVE, JOHNSTON, RI 02919; (877) 428-5614) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENTIRE FUEL PUMP UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AT 800-333-4542 AND STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 144,000.

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
DRIVERS SIDE SEAT BELT WILL NOT LOCK WHEN TRYING TO PUT IT ON; WHILE STATIONARY AND IN PARK. TAKES SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, AND LOTS OF JIGGLING, TO GET IT TO ENGAGE. IT SOMETIMES COMES UNHOOKED WHEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. THE MIDDLE BACK SEAT BELT IS FROZEN AND UNUSABLE. WHEN I HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH MY 1989 TOYOTA COROLLA YEARS BACK, THE DEALER TOLD ME FEDERAL LAW SPECIFIED THE MANUFACTURER WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING SEAT BELTS THAT WERE FAILING, EVEN WITHOUT A RECALL, FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR. KIA HAS TOLD ME IT'S MY RESPONSIBILITY. I WOULD THINK THEY WOULD NOT WANT TO RISK A WRONGFUL DEATH LAWSUIT IF I, OR MY FAMILY MEMBERS, WERE KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED DUE TO SEAT BELT FAILURE.
THE 3RD ROW SEAT BELT BUCKLES (BOTH OF THEM) HAVE BROKEN/FELL APART AND ARE NO LONGER USABLE. THE SEAT BELTS ARE NOT ABLE TO BE CLICKED/LOCKED AND CREATE AN UNSAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL OCCUPANTS IN THE VEHICLE. I NOTICED THEY BOTH BROKE WHEN I WENT TO BUCKLE IN MY KIDS. THE MIDDLE SEAT BELT IN THE 2ND ROW ALSO HAS LOCKED UP AND RETRACTED AND WILL NOT UNLOCK/RELEASE AND IS UNABLE TO BE USED. IF SOMEONE WAS BUCKLED IN THAT POSITION, THE SEAT BELT WOULD HAVE TO BE CUT OFF TO BE REMOVED FROM THE PERSON. IT WOULD PREVENT REMOVAL OF OCCUPANT IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. I NOTICED THAT THE SEAT BELT WILL NOT RELEASE WHEN I WAS CLEANING MY VEHICLE. I CONTACTED KIA MOTORS AMERICA VIA SOCIAL MEDIA AND AN AGENT OF KIA CONTACTED ME BACK AND SAID THAT I COULD TAKE IT TO A KIA SHOP AND HAVE THEM CHECK THEM OUT AND IF I WANTED TO, PRICE OUT THE REPLACEMENT BUCKLES AND SEAT BELT AND REPLACE THEM MYSELF BUT JUST MAKE SURE TO USE OEM KIA PARTS. OFFERED NO REAL SOLUTION ON KIA'S BEHALF. *TR

Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY HUSBAND WAS SITTING IN OUR KIA, IN PARK AND CAR TURNED OFF, WHEN HE HEARD A LOUD SNAPPING SOUND. CAR TOWED TO SHOP RESULTED IN MECHANIC STATING OUR FRONT DRIVER STRUT "EXPLODED" INTO SEVERAL PIECES. LUCKY WE WERE NOT DRIVING WHEN IT HAPPENED, HE STATED. NEVER HAD A CAR DO THIS BEFORE, EVER!
WHEN IT IS RAINING OR AFTER RAIN IF THERE ARE STILL PUDDLES IN THE ROAD, WHEN THE CAR GOES THROUGH ANY PUDDLES THE STEERING LOCKS UP FOR AT LEAST 45 SECONDS. I HAD MY DAUGHTER LEARNING HOW TO DRIVE AND THIS HAPPENED TO HER. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT PUTTING MY CHILD AT RISK LIKE THIS ESPECIALLY WITH THE PRICE OF THIS CAR. I'VE HAD THE POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACED AND IT STILL DOES THIS. MY ESC LIGHT HAS BEEN ON SINCE I GOT THE CAR. SO ANY TIME I HIT THE SMALLEST BUMP OR WHEN TRYING TO STOP ON A BUMPY ROAD OR ON SNOW OR ICE, THE CAR LOCKS UP. THE BRAKES GO OUT AND ITS LIKE EVERYTHING IN THE CAR LOCKS UP FOR A FEW SECONDS. IT IS TERRIFYING ESPECIALLY WHEN TRYING TO STOP AT A LIGHT. I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE EXPERIENCED SO MANY ISSUES IN A VEHICLE BEFORE OWNING A KIA RONDO. I HAVE HAD THE WHOLE FRONT END SUSPENSION REPLACED, NEW TIRES AND RIMS AND A MONTH LATER THE CAR IS WOBBLING AGAIN.

Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE ESC LIGHT WENT TO ESC OFF STATUS. TRIED TO REPAIR BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. BRAKE LIGHT PLUNGER STOPPER WAS BROKEN. CANNOT FIND REPLACEMENT STOPPER OF THIS TYPE. APPEARS THIS IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY THAN ORIGINAL RONDO LX 2009. THERE WAS DEFINITELY A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE AND WE WERE NOT NOTIFIED. NEED ASSISTANCE IN MAKING SAFETY ISSUE CORRECTED. PARK POSITION CAN ALSO SLIP OUT WITHOUT APPLYING THE BRAKE. BRAKE LIGHTS CAN STICK ON. NEED ASSISTANCE ASAP FROM KIA.
IN JANUARY 2013 MY CARE BEGAN TO MAKE A WHINNING NOISE. I TOOK MY CAR TO MY MECHANIC WHO STATED THE POWER STEERING PUMP WENT OUT. I WAS IN DISBELIEF DUE TO MY CARE ONLY BEING FOUR YEARS OLD. I THEN PAID $650 FOR PARTS AFTER I LEARNED THIS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY (MY CAR WAS OVER 60,000 MILES). MY MECHANIC THEN STATED THAT HE HAD SEEN SEVERAL CARS WITH THE SAME MAKE/ MODEL WITH THE SAME ISSUE & THAT FROM HIS EXPERTISE THIS WAS GOING TO BE A DOMINO EFFECT OF PROBLEMS. HE ADV ME TO TAKE THE CARE TO KIA DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO DO MORE DUE TO THE CAR WAS ONLY FOUR YEARS YOUNG. SO I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP IN CONORD, CA & THEY ADV ME THAT THE AIR COMPRESSOR WAS THE ISSUE GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF $1400 TO REPAIR. PARTS EMPLOYEE STATED THAT THERE WHERE NO RECALLS OR PROBLEMS WITH ANY OTHER CARS OTHER THAN MINE SO FAR (AFTER I ASKED HAS THIS EVER BEEN RECALLED). KIA PARTS EMPLOYEE ADV ME TO CALL AROUND TO GET THE PARTS ESTIMATES AFTER I TOLD HIM $1400 WAS TOO MUCH TO PAY FOR A CAR THAT KIA SHOULD HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR. I CALLED AROUND FOR PARTS & WAS ADV THAT BASED UPON THE AGE OF MY CAR THIS PAR SHOULD STILL BE WORKING. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH KIA BASED OUT OF SACRAMENTO & WAS TOLD THEY WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING UNLESS ALOT OF PEOPLE CAME TOGETHER TO FILE A LAW SUIT. NEEDLESS TO SAY RIGHT NOW I'M AT LOSS OF WORDS WITH KIA AS A COMPANY, THEIR LACK OF EMPATHY, AND ACCOUNTABILITY I WOULD NEVER ADV ANYONE TO PURCHASE A KIA & I NEED TO BE REIMBURSED AS I'M CURRENTLY MAKING MONTHLY PAYMENTS IN ADDITION TO PAYING FOR REPAIRS ON THIS CAR. *TR

Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION JERKS/LUNGES WHEN IT SHIFTS AT SPEEDS LESS THAN 50 KM/HR. *TR
MALFUNCTIONING TRANSMISSION SOLENOID THAT THE KIA FACTORY REP TOLD US "WHEN IT FAILS, THE TRANSMISSION WILL GO INTO SAFE MODE AND YOU CAN BRING IT BACK". MY CONCERN IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN (FACTORY REP WORD, NOT MINE) IT FAILS, WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IF MY WIFE IS DOING 65MPH ON THE INTERSTATE. THE SOLENOID EMITS A VERY LOUD BUZZ THAT CAN BE HEARD FOR SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET THAT WAS NOT THERE WHEN WE TEST DROVE THE CAR, AND IT WAS NOT THERE FOR ABOUT THE FIRST THREE WEEKS WE OWNED IT. IT STARTED AS AN OCCASIONAL BUZZ, AND IS NOW THERE AT ALL TIMES WHEN THE TRANSMISSION IS IN GEAR. IT APPEARS TO BE A KNOWN PROBLEM BECAUSE WHEN WE TOOK IT IN, A MECHANIC CAME OUT AND SAID HE KNEW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THE SERVICE MANAGER IMMEDIATELY TOLD ME I COULD TALK TO THE FACTORY REP ABOUT IT. THE FACTORY REP HAD NO ANSWER WHEN I ASKED WHY IT STARTED ONLY AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS, NOR DID HE HAVE ANY ANSWER ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS WITH A HIGH-SPEED FAILURE. A COMPLAINT TO KIA CUSTOMER SERVICE LED THEM TO ASK THE FACTORY REP ABOUT IT, AND HE TOLD THEM THEY DO IT A FIRST START. OURS IS ALL THE TIME, AND I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY WHEN (NOT IF) IT FAILS. *TR

Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
HEAD LAMPS, FOG LAMPS, AND BLINKERS WON'T TURN ON. WE CHANGED THE BULBS THINKING THEY HAD BLOWN. THE LIGHTS WOULDN'T COME ON WHEN CAR WAS RESTARTED.
THIS MODEL CAR HAS AT LEAST THREE HEADLIGHTS. I HAVE REPLACED THE MAIN HEADLIGHTS NOW 4 TIMES IN THE LAST 6 - 7 MONTHS. NOW THE TRANSMISSION HAS LOCKED UP MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT THE CAR INTO PARK OR PAST NEUTRAL. THE ESC OFF LIGHT WILL NOT GO OFF. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN OBSERVED ON THE 2007 MODEL OF THIS CAR. *TR
