2007 Lexus IS Electrical Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the electrical system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Electrical reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Hello: I own a 2007 Lexus IS250. My vehicle has had an ongoing engine misfire issue and has run extremely rough. In addition, my SRS light and there is an issue with the driver's side knee air bag inflator connector. Finally, my dashboard, front and rear door panels have been sticky and melted over time when it is hot and there is no reason why this is occurring. The dashboard and door panels become glossy, crack and have broken off into pieces and the shine/gloss from the dashboard causes blinding while driving due to the reflection of the sun on the dashboard. These issues have been going on for a period of over 10 years and I had multiple accidents due to these numerous issues. I have reported these to Lexus corporate on multiple occasions, including in 2016 and 2017. However, Lexus has refused to fix them stating that they are aware of these issues and had the ZLJ, ZLD and ZLA warranty programs but that they had expired in 2017. However, I later found out that none of those programs had expired at the time I called Lexus's corporate office. One of their programs, the ZLD warranty program, was apparently extended until 2021, however, Lexus failed to inform most vehicle owners of this. These issues are a safety issue. They have caused my car to malfunction for over 10 years and to have accidents. Many Lexus owners have also reported about these issues in Lexus owner forums on the internet and have stated that they have had accidents due to these issues, but Lexus failed to properly inform customers of the extended warranty and refused to fix these cars. With these issues continuing and becoming worse over the years, they are no longer a warranty issue, but a safety issue for drivers. I am requesting that the NHSTA investigate this issue and require, if possible, that Lexus issue safety recalls for these known defects and fix these issues immediately to prevent car accidents.

THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT LEAVING DRIVING A SERIOUS HAZARD. I HAVE READ THIS IS NOT UNCOMMON IN THIS MODEL. ALSO, I WAS INFORMED THAT IT COULD LOCK UP COMPLETELY. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE YET THERE IS NOT A RECALL. THE CAR IS IN MOTION WHEN THIS HAPPENS ON BOTH CITY AND HIGHWAY.

THE DASHBOARD IS CRACKED, MELTED, AND STICKY. I HAD TO COVER IT UP WITH A NEW MATERIAL FOR COSMETIC REASON. ALSO, VALUE OF THE CAR DECREASED BY $1000 DOLLARS FOR THE DAMAGE. SECOND, THERE IS A LOT OF CREAKING IN THE CAR. THIRD, THE ALTERNATOR DIED AT 120,00 MILES.

MY 2007 LEXUS IS250 ONLY HAS 44,000 MILES. THE NAVIGATION CONSOLE STOPPED RESPONDING, AND THIS WAS VERIFIED AS A DEFECT BY A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THE RESULT IS THAT IN ADDITION TO GPS AND RADIO FUNCTIONS NOT WORKING, THE CRITICAL AND LIFE DEPENDENT FEATURES OF AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING ALSO CAN'T BE CONTROLLED. THESE FEATURES ARE VITAL WHEN LIVING IN CLIMATES THAT HAVE BELOW FREEZING WEATHER IN WINTER, AND EXTREME HEAT IN SUMMER. THE COST OF THE REPAIR IS $2900, AND LEXUS WAS UNWILLING TO PAY FOR THIS REPAIR. CLEARLY THIS IS A MATERIAL DEFECT, AND THIS IS OCCURRING TO THOUSANDS OF OTHER LEXUS/TOYOTA OWNERS AS NOTED BY ONLINE COMMENTS.

MELTING DASHBOARD - CAN SIMPLY STICK A FINGERNAIL IN IT AND IT LEAVES AN INDENTATION. I NOTICED THAT OTHERS HAVE COMPLAINED OF THIS PROBLEM ALSO. IT'S ALSO VERY STICKY ANYWHERE ALONG THE LEATHER ON THE DOORS AND DASHBOARD. *TR ALSO, MY CAR IS ONLY 7 YEARS OLD AND A YEAR AGO THE TOUCH SCREEN WENT OUT. I CANNOT USE THE GPS AT ALL. APPARENTLY THE COST IS ABOUT $1,000 TO FIX THIS. SEEMS REDICULOUS THAT THIS WOULD HAPPEN AFTER ONLY 7 YEARS. THIS SHOULD BE GUARANTEED FOR LIFE!

THE HEADLIGHTS WILL STOP WORKING INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING. AT TIMES ONLY THE DRIVER SIDE HEADLIGHT WILL NOT WORK, BUT AT OTHER TIMES BOTH WILL NOT WORK. MANY TIMES ROTATING THE HEADLIGHT CONTROL ON THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT STEM TO THE OFF POSITION AND THEN TURNING THE CONTROL BACK TO THE ON POSITION WILL CAUSE THE HEADLIGHTS TO ILLUMINATE. OTHER TIMES I MUST PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, TURN OFF THE VEHICLE, AND THEN TURN ON THE VEHICLE FOR THE HEADLIGHTS TO WORK. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AS IT OCCURS AT NIGHT. *TR

AS I JUST EXITED THE HIGHWAY AND PULLED INTO THE PARKING LOT OF MY WORK, THE STEERING WHEEL SUDDENLY FROZE. I WAS ABOUT TO PARK IN AN OPEN SPOT, SO THE SPEED OF THE CAR WAS VERY LOW. AS I WAS REVERSING INTO THE SPOT, THE STEERING WHEEL JAMMED AND WOULD NOT TURN. I TRIED SHUTTING DOWN AND RESTARTING MANY TIMES BUT THE WHEEL WAS STUCK, AND REQUIRED ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF POWER TO TURN EVER SO SLIGHTLY. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE LEXUS DEALER. THEY WERE ALSO UNABLE TO TURN, AND UPON THEIR REVIEW, THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS A LEAK IN TIMING COVER, WHICH ACCUMULATED OVER TIME AND WENT INTO THE HARNESS OF THE ECU AND BURNED THE ECU, WHICH IN-TURN JAMMED YOUR STEERING. THERE WAS NO PHYSICAL LEAKS ON THE BOTTOM, AND THE DEALER ALSO CONFIRMED THAT BUT SAID IT WAS AN INTERNAL LEAK, YOU WOULD NOT SEE IT ON THE FLOOR. THE CAR IS STILL AT THE SHOP AND ONLY AFTER REPLACING THE ECU THEY WILL CHECK FOR STEERING ASSEMBLY. THE EXPLANATION PROVIDED BY THEM IS NOT VERY ADEQUATE AND IF IT IS TRUE THEN THERE SEEMS TO BE A SERIOUS FLAW IN DESIGN THAT ANY UNSEEN LEAK FROM TIMING COVER COULD CAUSE YOUR STEERING TO FREEZE UNEXPECTEDLY, WHILE YOUR VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. *TR

THE SPEEDOMETER INDICATING NEEDLE WENT BLACK ALONG WITH THE TACHOMETER NEEDLE NOT ALLOWING ME AT NIGHT TO SEE MY EXISTING SPEED. THERE IS NO CONTRAST WHATSOEVER. LEXUS OF SILVER SPRING TOLD ME THIS WAS A $1400.00 FIX. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE DUE TO THE FACT THAT THERE ARE MANY MORE CONCERNS ON THIS SUBJECT FROM MY ON LINE INVESTIGATION OF MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME CAR. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A TRUE SAFETY CONCERN. I AM WILLING TO BRING MY CAR TO YOU AS PROOF OF MY CONCERN. I NEED RESOLUTION AND CONSIDERATION FROM THE DEALER ON THIS MATTER. YOUR RESPONSE IS SERIOUSLY AWAITED. *TR
