Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

The defect: FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2006 F-150 PICK UP TRUCKS AS WELL AS CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006 LINCOLN MARK LT VEHICLES. IF THE CLOCKSPRING JUMPER WIRE COMES IN CONTACT WITH THE DRIVER SIDE FRONTAL AIR BAG LOWER HORN PLATE, THE WIRE INSULATION MAY BECOME CHAFED, CREATING A POTENTIAL FOR A SHORT CIRCUIT. IF THIS OCCURS THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP MAY ILLUMINATE INDICATING THAT SERVICE IS REQUIRED.
The risk: THE DRIVER SIDE FRONTAL AIR BAG COULD INADVERTENTLY DEPLOY INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY OR LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL IF OCCURRING WHILE IN MOTION.
The remedy: FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND INSTRUCT THEM TO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO A FORD OR LINCOLN/MERCURY DEALER TO HAVE A NEW CLOCKSPRING JUMPER WIRE INSTALLED THAT INCORPORATES A PROTECTIVE MESH COVER. REPAIRS WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THIS SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON SOME VEHICLES IN MARCH 2011. THE RECALL CAMPAIGN ON THE EXPANDED POPULATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT MAY 9, 2011. 605,684 units potentially affected
The defect: FORD IS RECALLING 605,684 MY 2005-2006 F-150 AND LINCOLN MARK LT VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 5.4L 3-VALVE ENGINES. THE BRAKE BOOSTER VACUUM SUPPLY HOSE ATTACHED TO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD FITTING MAY SWELL OVER TIME AND LOSE RETENTION FORCE. THIS CONDITION COULD ALLOW THE HOSE TO BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FITTING DURING AN INTAKE MANIFOLD BACKFIRE. SHOULD THE HOSE DETACH FROM THE INTAKE MANIFOLD, SEVERAL BRAKE APPLICATIONS WITH POWER ASSIST WILL BE AVAILABLE BEFORE THE VACUUM RESERVE IS DEPLETED.
The risk: ONCE THE BRAKE BOOSTER VACUUM RESERVE IS DEPLETED, THE DRIVER WILL HAVE FOUNDATION BRAKE FUNCTION, BUT WITH INCREASED BRAKE PEDAL EFFORT. REDUCED VEHICLE BRAKING COULD LEAD TO A CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE A RUBBER HOSE ON THE BRAKE BOOSTER VACUUM SUPPLY TUBE ASSEMBLY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 27, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

DURING A 100K MILE TUNE UP, I ATTEMPTED TO CHANGE SPARK PLUGS. OUT OF 3 PLUGS, 2 BROKE OFF IN ENGINE BLOCK. THE TRUCK WAS THEN TAKEN TO A MECHANIC WHO BROKE OFF 3 MORE. THEY TOLD ME THAT FORD IS VERY AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. IT COST ME $800 TO HAVE SPARK PLUGS REMOVED. NOW IT APPEARS THAT A PART OF THE OLD PLUG BROKE OFF INTO THE CYLINDER HEAD, NOT REMOVED BY ORIGINAL SHOP, CAUSING MORE DAMAGE THAT IS CURRENTLY BEING LOOKED AT BY ANOTHER SHOP.

IN 2012, WE BOUGHT A USED MARK LT WITH 60K MILES. THE VEHICLE SINCE STALLED TWICE AFTER REACHING 100K+ MILES AND DRAINING TWO BATTERY, SHUTTING DOWN THE ENGINE WITHOUT WARNING AT A LOW SPEED AND WHILE TRYING TO TURN. THIS RENDERED THE BRAKES AND POWER STEERING USELESS - WE JUST BARELY AVOIDED FRONTAL COLLISION WITH STREET SIGNS AND A BRIDGE AS WELL AS ALMOST BEING REAR-ENDED BY DRIVER BEHIND US. FORTUNATELY, BOTH WERE AT LOW SPEED AND ON LOCAL RURAL ROADS. ALSO, THE VEHICLE HAS BEGAN HESITATING WHEN ACCELERATING MOSTLY @ 45-50 MPH. THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT RE-CREATE ISSUES AFTER FIRST INCIDENT AND THE DIAGNOSTICS DID NOT SHOW ANY ERROR CODES. FORD ISSUED TSB'S IN 2008 DESCRIBING " THE ENGINE PROBLEMS ARE THE RESULT OF DEFECTS IN THE FOLLOWING VEHICLE SYSTEMS AND COMPONENTS: ...POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM), ...TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM, ...ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL (ETC) AND/OR THE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY" WHICH CAN LEAD TO THE FOLLOWING PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY ISSUES " ACCELERATION HESITATION, LOSS OF REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE, STALLING, LOSS OF POWER (INCL. LOSS OF POWER AT HIGH RATE OF SPEED), SUDDEN AND INTERMITTENT DECELERATION AND OTHER SIMILAR AND POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING MALFUNCTIONS." SEVERAL COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN MADE DIRECTLY TO NHTSA. IT IS IRRESPONSIBLE THAT THE OEM IS ALLOWED TO CONTINUE WITH THIS PRACTICE IN THE NAME OF PROFIT AND IS NOT REQUIRED RECTIFY THE DEFECTS IMMEDIATELY AND CONTINUES PLACING CUSTOMERS IN DANGER. THE RECENT GM CASE SHOULD HAVE TAUGHT US ALL A LESSON.

TSB 24-2188

WHEELS

This article supersedes TSB 22-2219 to update the Parts List and Service Procedure to clarify applicable steps by vehicle application. Some 2003-2020 Expedition/Navigator and 2006-2020 F-150 (non-Raptor) vehicles equipped with 4WD may exhibit grinding/clicking/ratcheting noise from the front wheel area. This may be due to partial engagement of the integrated wheel ends (IWE). To correct this condition, follow the Service Procedure to remove and cap the vacuum supply line or to reprogram the transfer case control module (TCCM) and replace any worn vacuum and/or IWE components.

SSM 48157

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Some 2002-2008 F-Super Duty, F-150 and Mark LT vehicles may exhibit concern during or after programing the VSM. The programming may fail or vehicle symptoms such as inoperative door locks, dome lamps, door ajar indicators or auto lamps may occur after successful programing. To ensure the VSM is configured correctly, use the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) scan tool and select the blue ball and socket icon in the upper left corner. Select the utility knife in the bottom left corner. Select Update/Special Function and enter 53061 in the blue box then press the tick mark. The screen will go back to the system utilities page. Navigate to the toolbox tab and run the Programmable Module Installation (PMI) on the VSM. The procedure will prompt you to manually enter the as-built into the VSM. Obtain the as-built data from PTS > OASIS > As-Built.

DORD2Q5Z09

POWER TRAIN

This SKU is a Transmission Oil Cooler Line. The customer communication requested return of unsold inventory to inspect for the port size being too large. If the port size is too large it will not fit the mating component which would prevent installation, and would therefore have no impact on the end user besides time to complete installation.

TSB 19-2026

EQUIPMENT; STRUCTURE

Some 2000 and newer Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles equipped with aluminum body panels may exhibit corrosion concerns appearing as bubbled and/or peeling paint with or without accompanying white dust. Panel replacement is recommended. Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition

SSM 47331

ENGINE; EQUIPMENT

Various vehicles equipped with a 4.6L, 5.4L, 6.8L modular 3 valve engine built on or before 8-Jan-2016 may exhibit symptoms that may include upper end engine noise, rough running, misfire and/or engine damage. If diagnosis leads to only camshaft/camshaft roller follower(s) requiring replacement, replace all of the camshaft roller followers on both banks/cylinder heads with part number 3L3Z-6564-A, not just the faulty roller follower(s). When replacing the camshaft roller followers, refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-01.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
