What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2014 Mazda Mazda6, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The park position sensor doesn't work. The car doesn't recognize that the car is in park and will not turn off. This is a known issue with the mazda 6 2014 and I do not know why there hasn't been a recall. I shouldn't have to pay to have this fixed. Started in 2019. Sometimes it takes 20 or more times to get the car to turn off by shifting in gear and back into park or starting and turning off the car. If you can't get the car turned off you cannot lock the doors and it will run the battery down. I just want this to be recalled so the dealership will repair. Thank you, this is a very frustrating situation. Literally my arm gets tired from slamming the gear shifter into park trying to get the car turned off.
When pressing the start stop button, the ignition may not turn off the accessories, even with the shifter in park position, and the vehicle engine shuts off normally the ignition stays on in accessory mode. This can cause battery drain/dead, possibly leaving me stranded in the dangerous situation. This has been unknown problem that is been refused by Mazda to create a recall. Right now it’s the car not acknowledging it’s in park because of a faulty switch, that Mazda clearly knows about and has had tons of complaints about and is well documented with NHTSA. How bad does this need to get before Mazda puts out a recall for all vehicles affected. Eventually, it will never be able to go to park and I may get in my car to drive it and it starts off in the wrong shift the wrong and I end up in a car accident. I’m sure Mazda wouldn’t want any crashes, fires, injuries or deaths on their hands do this well established faulty switch that they refused to recall.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
At 70000 miles the transmission just got stuck into a single gear in manual. I drove it home and the check engine light came on. Before this problem the car would not go into park. Every time I put it into park I was unable to turn off the car because it thought it was still in gear. I had to fiddle the gear stick. The car also made a high pitch click (metallic) when shifting into 1st or Reverse from park. I took it to Capitol Mazada San Jose and they charged me $7000 to fix some transmission problem. I took it home and the clicking noise did not go away. I took it back to the dealer and they redid some work.
The car had a (SUA) Sudden Unintended Acceleration malfunction. No, the car was totaled and towed away. My safety was put at risk as I was slowly pulling into a parking spot, eased my foot onto the brake and this malfunction caused my car to involuntarily jolt into a rampant high speed. It jumped a curb and crashed into a tree. My brake was useless in stopping this runaway vehicle. The only thing that stopped it was that tree! The airbag deployed and I was badly bruised from the airbag. Fortunately, there were no pedestrians or other cars near mine. There were no warning lights or messages before, during or after the accident. It happened so quickly because the tree was only a few feet in front of my car.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
I was at a doctor's office and their parking lot has a large slope. I parked facing up the slope and applied the parking brake. When I exited the vehicle, I felt the vehicle slowly sliding backwards. I pushed rearward on the car to check if the brakes were holding which accelerated the roll. I jumped back in the vehicle and depressed the brake pedal to stop the roll. I replaced the rear brake pads and noticed extremely uneven wear. Additionally, the left-rear caliper parking brake actuator was bound-up and wouldn't function. I exercised the actuator to loosen it up a bit which should be just enough until I can order the part. I experienced this same issue with my parking brake in 2017. In 2017, I took the car to the dealer who replace the rear brake calipers under recall 17V393000. I called the dealer today 8/16/2022 and they stated the calipers cannot be replaced under warranty or recall again. I find it extremely disturbing that the parking brake would experience such an extreme failure twice in the 8 years I've owned this vehicle. In 2017, the parking brake released suddenly while the car was unattended sending the car down my 100ft driveway, glancing my house and crashing through a wooden fence before stopping. Luckily, this time (2022), I know of the prior issue and can be proactive about replacing the faulty part. These calipers need a redesign where the calipers can last more than 5 years before such a safety failure... or that the parking brake not functioning while unattended isn't the first indication of failure.

Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The incident occurred while operating a diligently maintained 2014 Mazda 6 Touring, overseen by dealership service. While driving, the check engine light illuminated, prompting an immediate halt. Upon inspection, a concerning observation was made: the coolant level was significantly low. Despite no apparent leaks, further examination revealed a crack in the cylinder head, allowing coolant to mix with the oil. This issue, specific to Mazda's 2.5L Skyactiv engine, has been identified as a manufacturing defect, independent of overheating. Notably, this problem has been echoed by multiple users, confirming the presence of defective cylinder heads in these vehicles. This flaw necessitates an expensive repair, absolving the vehicle owner of any responsibility. Despite the widespread occurrence of this issue, Mazda has declined to issue a recall for vehicles equipped with these faulty cylinder blocks. Online forums and discussions have highlighted numerous instances of identical cracks in the same location, affirming the prevalence of this problem with Mazda's 2.5L engines. This poses a serious concern for vehicle safety and warrants attention from both Mazda and vehicle owners. Additional information regarding this issue can be found through the provided links. STEERING WHEEL LOCKS WHEN REVERSING TO THE RIGHT OR WHILE DRIVING ON A BUMPY CITY ROAD. IT HAPPENS WHILE GOING 45MPH. ATLANTA, GA
WHEN TRYING TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK, THE CAR WILL NOT CUT OFF UNTIL AFTER 7 OR 8 TRIES
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
WINDSHIELD WAS CRACKED FROM DRIVER SIDE TOP UNDER WEATHERSTRIP AND CONTINUED ABOUT 18 INCHES AND CONTINUING TO CRACK. CAR WAS PARKED FOR 2 DAYS AT HOUSE. NO SITE OF ANYTHING IMPACTING IT, JUST A LONG SMOOTH CRACK FROM UNDER THE RUBBER. I BELIEVE IT TO BE A STRESS CRACK FROM DESIGN FLAW. *TR
WENT TO WORK LIKE ANY OTHER DAY, WHEN I RETURNED TO MY CAR I NOTICED A 1FT+ LONG CRACK ON THE WINDSHIELD. TOOK THE VEHICLE OVER TO MY LOCAL MAZDA DEALER, AND WAS TOLD IT WAS CAUSED BY A DEBRIS HIT. I DID NOT SEE OR HEAR ANYTHING HIT MY WINDSHIELD THAT DAY, AND DID NOT SEE ANY CRACKS AFTER I PARKED THE CAR. FILED A CLAIM WITH MY INSURANCE AND THE AUTO GLASS COMPANY I WAS WORKING WITH, AS WELL AS MAZDA, TOLD ME THAT THE WINDSHIELD WAS ON BACKORDER WITH NO ETA AVAILABLE. AFTER ABOUT OVER 2 MONTHS OF WAITING, AND THE CRACK BECOMING OVER 2FT LONG AND SPLITTING. THE WINDSHIELD FINALLY CAME IN AND WAS REPLACED. NOT EVEN 2 WEEKS LATER, DID THIS NEW WINDSHIELD GAIN ANOTHER 1FT+ LONG CRACK. THIS TIME I SAW THE DEBRIS HIT, BUT IT DID NOT HIT AT HIGH SPEEDS OR HAVE A HARD IMPACT. THIS LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THE DESIGN OF THIS WINDSHIELD CAN BE EASILY DAMAGED AND/OR IS PRONE TO CRACKING. WILL NOW HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE PROCESS OF WAITING FOR A NEW WINDSHIELD AGAIN, WHICH WILL ALLOW THIS NEW CRACK TO BECOME EVEN LARGER. *JS
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.

TAKATA RECALL: I WAS HIT FROM BEHIND VERY HARD AND THEN HIT FROM SIDE BY ANOTHER CAR AND KNOCKED OFF FREEWAY ON TO A FENCE. THE SIDE AIRBAGS DIDN'T INFLATE AND INSTEAD JUST SLAPPED MY BODY LEAVING RED MARKS ON MY ARM. I WAS THROWN INTO SIDE OF CAR & STEERING WHEEL SEVERAL TIMES AND UNABLE TO WORK FOR TWO MONTHS. SEVERE CONCUSSION WITH MEMORY LOSS. I WAS DRIVING NORTH ON MOPAC EXPRESSWAY IN AUSTIN, TEXAS AT 58MPH. THE PERSON WHO HIT ME SAID HE WAS CHANGING LANES & DID NOT SEE ME. CAR WAS TOTALED. *TR

Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
My 2014 mazda 6 EVAP system pops the p0451 when filling up gas to the first click. It goes away after a while if I take care to not fill up the tank all the way to the top. It is similar to a issue reported by recall 7414D for other 2014 mazda 6s. My car is not covered by the open recall, but it is experiencing similar issues. The p0451 goes on and off depending on how much i fill up the gastank.
The contact owns a 2014 Mazda Mazda6. The contact stated that while parked, there was a strong fuel odor coming from the vehicle. In addition, there was fuel leaking from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V170000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 144,000.

THE FRONT SUSPENSION MAKES A CLUNKING NOISE OCCASIONALLY WHEN MOVING RIGHT AFTER STARTUP AND SOMETIMES AFTER STARTING FROM A STOP (USUALLY ONLY NEAR THE START OF A DRIVE). IT ALSO OCCASSIONALLY MAKES A CLUNKING NOISE WHEN HITTING A POTHOLE/SPEED BUMP. THIS SEEMS TO BE THE SAME THING AS RECORDED IN THE MAZDA SERVICE BULLETIN 02-010/16 AND SUGGEST POSSIBLY MAKING IT A RECALL INSTEAD OF A SERVICE BULLETIN.

Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
AFTER A YEAR OR SO OF OWNING THE VEHICLE, THE MOISTURE AND FOG APPEARED IN THE INNER TAIL LIGHT HOUSING, PASSENGER SIDE. I HAVE REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO A MAZDA DEALERSHIP BUT THEY SAID IT IS NORMAL AND MAZDA WILL NOT REPLACE THE TAIL LIGHT HOUSING. EVENTUALLY, MORE AND MORE WATER STARTED TO ACCUMULATE INSIDE, WHERE AT POINTS THE HOUSING WOULD BE COMPLETELY FOGGY AND EXCESSIVE LIQUID WOULD BE VISIBLE IN THE CORNER OF THE HOUSING FROM FEW FEET OF DISTANCE. IT'S ONLY MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE WATER CAUSES ADDITIONAL ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, NOT TO MENTION THE COMPLETE LOSS OF LIGHT VISIBILITY AND HOUSING TRANSPARENCY, TO ALL OTHER DRIVERS WHO ARE IN THE REAR. MAZDA NEEDS TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE INSTEAD OF SAYING IT IS NORMAL. MY CAR IS PARKED IN A GARAGE AND IT IS NOT EXPOSED TOO OUTSIDE WEATHER FACTORS AT ALL TIMES, DURING THE DAY. IT IS WELL PROTECTED. I HAVE REPORTED THE ISSUE TO MAZDA SEVERAL TIMES BUT WITH NO SUCCESS.

Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 MAZDA 6 EQUIPPED WITH DUNLOP SP SPORT TIRES, SIZE: 225/45R19. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE DEFLATED WITHOUT WARNING. A SPARE TIRE REPLACED THE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE TIRE WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE DOT NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE TIRE AND VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,635.
UPON A ROUTINE TIRE ROTATION SERVICE PERFORMED AT A GOOD YEAR RETAIL SERVICE CENTER, I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN THAT THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE HAD SUFFERED A DEFECT AND WAS UNSAFE FOR TRAVEL AT HIGHWAY SPEED. WHEN SEARCHING FOR A REPLACEMENT OF THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT TIRE, A DUNLOP SP5000 P225 19R45, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE TIRE WAS ON NATIONWIDE BACK ORDER. GOOD YEAR, BEING THE OWNER, MANUFACTURER AND DISTRIBUTOR OF DUNLOP TIRES, INFORMED ME THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND OR LOCATE A RELIABLE REPLACEMENT FOR MY DEFECTIVE TIRE WITHIN A FORESEEABLE TIME PERIOD, AND INSTRUCTED ME TO CONTACT THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP, RAY BRANDT MAZDA IN HARVEY, LOUISIANA, WAS LOCATED OVER 50 MILES AWAY. I THEN DROVE THE VEHICLE TO RAY BRANDT AND WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE THAT NO EQUIVALENT REPLACEMENT WOULD BE AVAILABLE FOR MY 2014 MAZDA6 FOR AT LEAST 3 TO 5 DAYS. I ASKED WHAT I SHOULD DO IN THE MEANTIME, AND WAS TOLD THAT I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR EITHER DRIVING THE VEHICLE OR FINDING A REPLACEMENT AT MY OWN EXPENSE. IT HAS SINCE TAKEN NINE DAYS SINCE THE TIME IT WAS DETERMINED THAT A DEFECTIVE TIRE HAD COMPROMISED THE SAFE OPERATION OF THE CAR FOR A REPLACEMENT TIRE TO BE LOCATED AND DELIVERED TO THE DEALERSHIP, MEANWHILE THERE HAS BEEN NO ATTEMPT BY THE MANUFACTURER OF THE TIRE, GOOD YEAR, OR THE VEHICLE, MAZDA, TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE DEFECT OR PROVIDE REPLACEMENT TRANSPORTATION. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS TIRE WAS ABRUPTLY DISCONTINUED AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN SEPTEMBER 2013, AND I WAS NEVER INFORMED OF ANY LIKELIHOOD OF DEFECT OR OF A DISCONTINUATION THAT WOULD RENDER REPLACEMENT TIRES UNAVAILABLE IN THE EVENT OF DEFECT, ROAD HAZARD OR OTHER TIRE FAILURE. I HAVE BEEN FORCED TO CHOOSE BETWEEN RISKING LIFE OR LIMB BY DRIVING ON THE DEFECTIVE TIRE OR FACING ECONOMIC HARDSHIP IN ATTEMPT TO FIND ALTERNATE TRANSPORTATION TO WORK. *TR

DRIVER'S SEAT DOES NOT SLIDE BACK AND FORWARD AT ALL. IS STUCK IN THE BACK POSITION.
HEADRESTS ARE TOO FAR FORWARD. AFTER AN HOUR/HOUR AND A HALF OF DRIVING THEY CAUSE FATIGUE IN THE NECK AND UPPER SHOULDERS. HEADRESTS SHOULD BE ADJUSTABLE BY DRIVER FOR ANGLE TO SEAT. FED REGS HAVE GONE TOO FAR! *TR
