The defect: MERCEDES-BENZ IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2002-2010 G-CLASS VEHICLES FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, "'LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT." THESE VEHICLES ARE EQUIPPED WITH A GRILL COVER FOR FRONT TURN SIGNAL PROTECTION THAT, WHILE PERMISSIBLE, MAY IMPACT OVER TIME THE SIGNAL'S ABILITY TO MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS 108.
The risk: THE SIGNAL LIGHT'S VISIBILITY TO OTHER MOTORISTS MAY BE REDUCED OVER TIME, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL IMPROVED TURN LIGHT UNITS OPTIMIZED FOR USAGE WITH GRILLS. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN AT THE END OF DECEMBER 2010 OR EARLY JANUARY 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MERCEDES-BENZ AT 1-800-367-6372.

The vehicle entered dealer custody in 08/2025 after a dead battery / lockout repair event and was returned by the dealer on 01/08/2026 after months in dealer custody for repair work. Before entering dealer custody, the vehicle was drivable. The dealer documented a completed road test and inspection, but the vehicle was returned in unsafe and inoperable condition. Immediately after dealer return, on the drive home, the vehicle shook violently and emitted a strong burning smell, requiring multiple stops. The condition was later duplicated with dealer personnel during a road test. Despite that, the dealer refused meaningful diagnostic work and later returned the vehicle by flatbed. Since that return, the front brakes appear seized/engaged. If the vehicle is placed in drive, it remains stationary. If throttle is applied, it moves only slightly while squealing as though the brakes are locked on. The vehicle is not safely drivable and has remained inoperable since 01/08/2026. This created a safety risk because the vehicle was returned for use on public roads despite violent shaking, burning odor, and what appears to be brake seizure/drag. The symptoms were reproducible and were brought to the dealer’s attention immediately. The vehicle remains available for inspection.

POWER TRAIN

Single throttle lift-off clunking noise from the side shaft when moving off (audible at the outboard end). The noise is heard once in each instance when changing direction of travel. Note: Sound file in attachment Cause If the complaint is eliminated by experimentally loosening the outboard collar nut (by 1 turn), the problem is due to cracking of the microweld between the wheel bearing inner race and the joint housing of the side shaft. Note: The collar nut must always be replaced after being loosened. See also LI33.20-P-078406 Remedy Coat contact surface of side shaft with wheel bearing with Molykote paint. To do this, proceed as follows: 1. Remove side shafts 2. Clean contact surface A (see image file in attachment "Outer joint housing before") before coating with Molykote, using "spirit" (free of dust and grease) 3. Coat contact surface A (see image file in attachment "Outer joint housing after") with Molykote and leave to dry for "one hour" in removed condition 4. Reinstall side shafts Note: Before using the antifriction coating (Molykote), stir it or shake it thoroughly for (at least 1 minute).

Complaint Wind noises/whistling noises from front area of roof or from area of instrument panel/windshield at high speeds Cause The airstream can excite the rubber strip of the windshield to whistle. Note: To troubleshoot, tape down the strip. Remedy Seal the lower lip of the rubber strip at the top of the windshield in the installed state across the entire width with window adhesive.

SERVICE BRAKES

Complaint The concern is characterized by BOTH of the following. 1. "Active Distance Assist currently unavailable" and "Active Brake Assist functions currently limited" are shown on the instrument cluster during startup or while driving AND 2. Stored DTC in quick test U0416FE - "Implausible data were received from control unit Traction system" in A108/1 (Distronic). Cause Missing wire between Drive Unit (N145) and Supercap (C8). Remedy Please reference the following attachments prior to starting work to familiarize and verify the locations of the components: • Drive Unit (N145) - See attachment "Location of Drive Unit in the vehicle". • Supercap (C8) - See attachment "Location of Supercap C8 in the vehicle". Professionally create a new connection by: • Using a red/white cable with cross-section 0.35 mm² and overall length of approximately 2m. • Connect Drive Unit (N145) plug A pin 18 to the 3-pin plug of the Supercap (C8) terminal 15 pin 2. Reference the new wire routing location as shown by the red line in "Picture 1 - Connection from Supercap to Drive Unit". • The new wire should be added to the existing wiring harness as shown by the red line "Picture 1 - Connection from Supercap to Drive Unit". • Z-Splice is the preferred method using A 000 982 91 10 for the Supercap (C8) connection. NOTE: All WIS instructions must be followed for wiring modifications. Damage code: 0 - 51422 - ** - 7 (for ** please state the following: "missing connection ex factory"). If the vehicle has had the modification completed and returns with an exact matching "complaint", please open a TIPS case.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Complaint USB port not functioning properly. Cause Most reported USB port issues are due to improper use or contamination. Note: Any repair costs must be discussed with the customer beforehand. Common external factors identified include: • Fluid intrusion • Broken bushings or physical damage See attachments. Remedy If a component needs replacement without visible external damage, submit a detailed TIPS case. Include information on all connected external devices (e.g., charging cables, USB drives, hard drives).

SERVICE BRAKES

Complaint At low speeds and light brake pressure, brakes will make a groaning or honking noise. Cause Frictional vibrations with very light brake pressure/modulations. Remedy This condition can be duplicated on most vehicles. To validate, use a like for like reference vehicle. The noise is normal behavior under the conditions listed. With very light brake pressure this noise can be induced/caused due to normal brake pad and brake rotor vibrations. Exchanging brake components will not rectify.
