Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

COMMUNICATION

Nov 1, 2019
24,226 units potentially affected
The defect: Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2013-2017 vehicles due to a software fault that may cause the date and time for the emergency call system (eCall) to differ from the actual date and time, potentially relaying an inaccurate vehicle location. For a full list of the affected models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2019/RMISC-19V787-4620.pdf
The risk: An inaccurate vehicle location may delay emergency responders, increasing the risk of injury.
The remedy: MBUSA has initiated an Over the Air (OTA) remote update. MBUSA will also notify owners, and dealers will check software for a successful OTA or update the communication module software as needed, free of charge. The recall began December 23, 2019. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2019120008.

SEAT BELTS:FRONT

2,580 units potentially affected
The defect: Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain model year 2015 S550 4Matic Coupe, AMG S63 4Matic Coupe, and AMG S65 vehicles manufactured January 27, 2014, to April 2, 2015. In the affected vehicles, left-side front seat belts may have been installed on the right-side and vice versa. As a result, the installation angle may be incorrect, affecting the seat belt locking behavior. Additionally, the child seat restraint function for the passenger seat would not be available. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection," and FMVSS number 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies."
The risk: If the seat belt is installed improperly, it may not properly restrain the seat occupant in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
The remedy: MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the installation of the seat belts, correcting them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on October 30, 2015. MBUSA's recall number is 2015100002. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

ON JULY 15, 2020, I WAS INVOLVED IN A ONE CAR ACCIDENT. THE CAR LEFT THE ROADWAY ON A CURVE WHEN I LOST CONSCIOUSNESS DUE TO A MEDICAL ISSUE, AND SLID DOWN AN EMBANKMENT INTO A TREE. THE TREE PREVENTED A TOTAL ROLLOVER AND THE CAR WAS AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE. I WAS THROWN AGAINST THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR AND SUSTAINED INJURIES. THE SIDE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, NEITHER DID THE FRONT AIRBAGS. THE CAR WAS TOTALED. THE SIDE AIRBAGS ARE SUPPOSED TO DEPLOY IN A SIDE IMPACT OR ROLLOVER SITUATION, BOTH OF WHICH OCCURRED. BECAUSE THEY DID NOT DEPLOY, I SUFFERED A HEAD INJURY, BROKEN RIBS FROM THE IMPACT, AND LACERATIONS FROM THE BROKEN WINDOW AND TREE. I HAVE ENCLOSED THE POLICE REPORT AND PICTURES. THE REPORT ERRONEOUSLY STATED THE AIRBAGS HAD DEPLOYED, BUT THE PICTURES CLEARLY SHOW THEY DID NOT. I HAVE MORE PICTURES, IF NEEDED.

THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED IN CHARLOTTE NC IN WINTER OF 2018. IN NOVEMBER OF 2019, WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WITH NO CARS IN SITE, WE HEARD A LOUD POP. WE COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT THE NOISE WAS BECAUSE IT SOUNDED LIKE A ROCK HIT THE WINDSHIELD BUT WE DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING. WE COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHERE A ROCK COULD HAVE COME FROM AS THEIR WERE NO CARS ON THE ROAD. THAT AFTERNOON WE PULLED BACK THE ROOF SCREEN TO FIND THAT THE GLASS PANORAMIC ROOF HAD CRACKED ALL OF THE WAY BACK. THE CRACK STARTED IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER OF THE CAR IN THE CURVE OF THE TOP. THE CRACK STARTED RIGHT WHERE THE WINDSHIELD AND THE ROOF COME TOGETHER. MERCEDES CONVINCED US THAT SOMETHING HAD TO HAVE HIT IT. WE MADE A CLAIM ON OUR INSURANCE AND $10,500 LATER, THE TOP WAS REPLACED. 5 MONTHS LATER AS WE WERE PULLING OUT OF OUR DRIVEWAY ONTO A 2 LANE COUNTRY ROAD, WE HEARD THE SAME NOISE AND AGAIN, PULLED THE SHADE BACK TO SEE THE ROOF HAD CRACKED ONCE MORE. BETWEEN THE TWO INCIDENTS, THE CAR HAS ONLY BEEN DRIVEN 600 MILES. THE CAR IS HARDLY EVER DRIVEN AND STAYS COVERED UP IN A CLIMATE CONTROLLED GARAGE 99% OF THE TIME. NOTHING HAS HIT THE TOP AND BROKEN THE GLASS. THE TOP BROKE IN A WAVY PATTERN JUST LIKE BEFORE. THEIR IS OBVIOUSLY A STRUCTURAL PROBLEM AS THE GLASS IS A STRUCTURAL PART OF THE CAR. THESE ARE OBVIOUSLY STRESS RELATED AND I HAVE SPOKEN TO OTHER OWNERS OF THESE CARS WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND MERCEDES WILL NOT STAND BEHIND THESE REPAIRS. THEY MAKE YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE IN SOME WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS DEFECT. I CANNOT KEEP FILING AN EXPENSIVE PANORAMIC ROOF REPLACEMENT ON MY INSURANCE, NOW I'M AT THE POINT TO WHERE I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR DUE TO THE ROOF POSSIBLY BREAKING. THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT A $150,000 CAR WOULD HAVE THIS SORT OF PROBLEM. *TR

WINDSHIELD WAS BROKEN OCTOBER 2016. REPLACEMENT WINDSHIELD MADE BY PPG IS DEFECTIVE AND HAS A COLOR REFLECTIVE STRIP THAT IN MY LINE OF SIGHT. THIS CAR CANNOT BE DRIVEN AT NIGHT. THEY HAVE PUT 4 PPG WINDSHIELDS IN THE CAR AND ALL ARE BAD. MERCEDES BENZ HAVE DETERMINED THAT THE GLASS MADE BY PPG FOR REPLACEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES IS NOT THE SAME AS WHAT IS COMING OUT OF THE FACTORY IN GERMANY. I STILL WAITING TO TRY TO GET CORRECT GLASS FROM GERMANY. MERCEDES WILL NOT SHIP ONE OUT.

BOTH REAR SEAT BELTS DO NOT RETRACT. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IN 10 MONTHS THAT THE SEAT BELTS WILL BE REPLACED BY MB IN THIS CAR. MB DEALERS STATES THAT IT IS A PROBLEM THAT IS KNOWN AND MB IS WORKING ON A FIX. IN THE MEANTIME THEY ARE REPLACING THE SEAT BELTS WITH A NEW PART, BUT THEY SAID IT MAY GO BAD AGAIN AND MB IS WORKING ON A PERMENANT FIX AND WE WILL BE NOTIFIED WHEN A NEW SEAT BELT IS DEVELOPED. I HAVE NOT SEEN ANY RECALL ON THIS, BUT THE DEALER HAS STATED THAT THEY HAVE REPLACED MANY BELTS MULTIPLE TIMES ON OTHER CARS.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Complaint The range of the integrated garage door opener (GTO) is too short. Cause 1. Vehicles equipped with infrared windows and/or a heated windshield may suffer from complaints involving low transmission power. 2. When comparing the range between the integrated GTO and the garage door hand transmitter, the garage door hand transmitter is tested outside the vehicle. 3. The garage door hand transmitter is being aimed towards the garage door, but the vehicle is in a different position. 4. The garage door drive is old. Remedy 1. The lower level of transmission power is mainly perceived by customers who did not have any infrared windows (code 595) or all-round infrared windows (code 596) or heated windshield (code 597) in their previous model or who have another model without this special equipment in their fleet. The loss in transmission has technical reasons, i.e. a thin metal film is fitted in the windows. Please consider these codes and advise the customer accordingly! Replacing parts does not remedy the problem. 2. Perform the comparison test between the integrated GDO and the garage door hand transmitter under identical conditions. The garage door hand transmitter must be inside the vehicle and must be held at the height of the inside rearview mirror. 3. The customer instinctively aims the garage door hand transmitter towards the door. However, the transmission direction of the integrated GDO depends on the position of the inside rearview mirror, and thus depends directly on the position of the vehicle relative to the receiving antenna of the garage door drive.

Mercedes-Benz AG (?MBAG?), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz, has determined that on certain Model Year (?MY?) 2013-2017 B-Class, C-Class, CLA-Class, CLS-Class, E-Class, G-Class, GL-Class, GLA-Class, GLC-Class, GLE-Class, GLK-Class, GLS-Class, GT-Class, M-Class, S-Class, SL-Class, and SLK-Class (117, 156, 166, 172, 190, 204, 205, 207, 212, 217, 218, 222, 231, 242, 253, 292, and 463 platform), the software for the PASS control unit does not meet current series production configuration and therefore the possibility exists that a correct GPS position cannot be determined in the control unit for location based services, and an incorrect vehicle position may be displayed. Please note the E-call feature is not impacted by this issue. What We?re Doing MBUSA will conduct a Service Campaign. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will update the PASS Control Unit Software

EQUIPMENT

To enhance the satisfaction of our customers, avoid further costs of litigation and return focus to its core businesses, Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) has entered into a settlement regarding claims relating to alleged mold and mildew type odors originating from the HVAC system in certain Mercedes-Benz vehicles. As part of the settlement, MBUSA has agreed to offer sliding-scale warranty coverage for certain vehicles diagnosed as having mold or mildew type odors originating from the HVAC system?although that coverage will not take effect until the settlement is judicially approved and other events occur; likely not until December 7, 2020 at the earliest (see below). If the settlement becomes effective, coverage will include cleaning of the evaporator and replacement of the HVAC filters

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
