Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

I PURCHASED A 2008 CLUBMAN AND IT'S THE NON-TURBO BUT THE ENGINE HAS AN ISSUE WITH MULTIPLE MISFIRE CODES BEING SENT OUT TO THE OBD2 READER AS WELL AS SOME ECU CODES THAT IMPLY WEAK FUEL PRESSURE AND WHEN LOOKING UP AND TRYING TO FIND HOW TO REPLACE THE FUEL PRESSURE PUMP THEN I REALIZED I WAS NOT ALONE IN THIS ISSUE AND WONDER IF ANYONE ELSE HAS HAD THE THOUGHT TO ACTUALLY FILE A COMPLAINT SO THAT WAY SOMETHING CAN BE DONE SINCE IT'S A VERY FAULTY THING AND MOST OF THESE HAVE HAD ISSUES FROM 30000 MILES ABOUT BUT THEN FOR ALL THE OTHERS THAT ALSO HAVE IT AFTER THE WARRANTY DROPS TO INTENTIONALLY PUT IN A FAULTY PART I'M NOT SURE IF IT'S ILLEGAL OR NOT BUT IT SHOULD BE. I DO NO THAT IF THEY PUT IN ENOUGH FAULTY PARTS THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL MADE IF IT IS DETERMINED THAT THEY ARE AT FAULT AND NOT THE PEOPLE BUYING THEM OR MISTREATING OR NOT MAINTAINING ETC ETC... I STRONGLY URGE ANYONE ELSE THAT'S HAD THIS ISSUE TO ALSO MAKE YOUR OWN COMPLAINT IF IT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAD TO BUY A NEW CAR BECAUSE OF IT. *TR

CAR HAS JUST OVER 100000 MILES BUT HAS BEEN CONSTANTLY OVERHEATING (HAVE TO FILL TANK ALMOST EVERY DAY). CANNOT FIND OUT THE SOURCE, BUT I NOTICED A RECALL ON THE WATER PUMP ON OTHER SIMILAR MODELS, BUT VIN SEARCH SAID MINE WAS OKAY. I FEEL THIS IS AN ERROR. PLEASE INFORM ME OF MY NEXT STEP. GETTING VERY FRUSTRATED. I WOULDN'T CONSIDER THIS HIGH MILEAGE FOR THIS CAR, AND I TAKE CARE OF IT.

WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET, I WAS STOPPED IN TRAFFIC. I PULLED OFF IN FIRST GEAR AND THE CAR DIED. SEVERAL OTHER DRIVERS HELPED ME PUSH MY CAR TO A SAFE LOT.I THEN HAD THE CAR CHECKED OUT TO FIND THE TIMING CHAIN BROKE AND RUINED THE ENGINE. I BOUGHT THE CAR THROUGH CAR MAX WITH THEIR PRE OWNED, PRE CERTIFIED PROGRAM. MY CAR NOW HAS 80,000 MILES AS IT HAS SINCE MARCH 10TH 2017. I'M STILL MAKING PAYMENTS AND FULL COVERAGE INSURANCE PAYMENTS ON A CAR I CAN'T DRIVE. DO I HAVE ANY RECOURSE? ARE AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURERS NOT HELD ACCOUNTABLE. UNDER DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES, I COULD HAVE DIED OR BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED THAT DAY. THIS IS WIDESPREAD. THERE ARE LITERALLY 100S OF THOUSANDS OF MINI OWNERS WITH THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. THE TIMING TENSIONER BREAKS CAUSING THE TIMING CHAIN TO GIVE WAY. GOD FORBID THIS HAPPENS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. ENGLAND HAS RECALLED ALL THEIR MINI COOPERS A REPAIRED THEM. WHAT ABOUT AMERICA! I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR A SERVICE ENGINE SOON WARNING LIGHT. THE ENGINE WAS/IS BURNING OIL. THE MINI STAFF TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS A DESIGN FLAW WITH THIS ENGINE. I NEED TO CHECK MY OIL LEVEL EVERY WEEK OR WHENEVER I FILL UP. KEEP PUTTING IN MORE OIL WHEN THE LEVEL GETS LOW. I HAVE SPENT A LOT OF MONEY FOR THEIR DESIGN FLAW. NO OFFER FROM MINI ABOUT REPLACING THE ENGINE. MINI TOLD ME TO WRITE TO HQ, WHICH I HAVE BUT NOTHING HAS COME OF IT. I AM TIRED OF PAYING FOR THEIR DESIGN FLAW AND I DON'T THINK I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THEIR MISTAKE.

Manufacturer communications

A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

MINI electrical systems have continued to develop over the past few years. As a result, the demand on the batteries has increased. Breakdowns due to an empty battery or problems in the vehicles electrical system can have various causes, most of which are not due to the battery itself. For this reason, a battery replacement will permanently eliminate the problem only in the rarest of cases. The energy diagnosis test module helps to localize these causes. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle “discharged battery” complaints. Without performing the energy diagnosis test plan, the root cause of a discharged battery cannot be identified. In order to properly repair the vehicle the first time, it is very important that the diagnostic test plan is performed to completion; with all results taken into consideration.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; EQUIPMENT; WHEELS

New RDC wheel electronics will be introduced with future generation MINI models. The new wheel electronics are identified as Huf Generation 5. These new wheel electronics will need to be programmed using the new tool when replaced or when depressurized (0 psi) for more than 2 minutes.

EQUIPMENT; EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY; STRUCTURE:BODY:DOOR

Service Action: Checking or Replacing the Door Sill Trim Strips. The door sill trim strips are deformed and/or peeling up at the corners. CAUSE: Insufficient surface preparation of the door sill.

M640108

EQUIPMENT:APPLIANCE:AIR CONDITIONER; EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL

Air Conditioning System Leak Testing. The customer complains of poor or no air conditioning cooling. After further diagnosis, the system is found to be low or empty of a refrigerant charge, but when using an electronic leak detector, no leak can be found. CAUSE: In most cases, an electronic leak detector is not sufficient for identifying small leaks in the system. Electronic leak detectors can give false alarms and can lead to an improper diagnosis of small leaks. A leak cannot be located exactly if accessibility is impaired (in the case of the expansion valve, evaporator or condenser).

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
