What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
While driving on a highway at approximately 55–60 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost its ability to accelerate and maintain power. The engine RPM increased, but the vehicle would not respond normally, creating a significant safety hazard in traffic. The CVT transmission intermittently enters a reduced-power mode (limp mode), making it difficult to safely merge or continue driving. Diagnostic trouble codes P0776 (Pressure Control Solenoid B Performance) and P0730 (Incorrect Gear Ratio) were confirmed by an independent transmission repair shop, which diagnosed the transmission as failed and recommended replacement. This vehicle has previously been subject to CVT-related recalls, but the transmission still experienced this failure.
Purchased used car in July 2024 and was able to drive it maybe 2 months and the transmission would not shift and would come to a complete stop. Not a safe feeling driving in 3 lanes of traffic on a busy highway at rush hour. Transmission light on and took to mechanic and was told this make and model is notorious for transmission failure and it needs replacing. The odometer is 86316 and car has been sitting now for two years. Of course we went exactly 100 miles over the warranty and now have to pay 5000-9000 dollars for a replacement with no guarantee warranty. So now we have the car paid off and can’t drive it because it’s out of budget to replace. Thanks a lot Mitsubishi for nothing.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
Hesitation when accelerating. Has stalled while driving. Has come to a complete stop when put in reverse.
Car jerks like it’s losing power when pulling off, not sure if it’s transmission issue or engine issue
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim

Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The front passenger door will not open from the inside NOR from the outside. This could be a severe safety issue in case of emergency! I tried unplugging the battery for 15 minutes and reconnecting. Still does not work. No warnings/messages. No recalls. What if this happened to other doors? What if I drove into a lake and could not escape the vehicle?
I was driving down the road at 60 miles an hour. My car completely shut down restarted itself while I was in Drive going 60 miles an hour. It put me back in first gear shot my RPMs through the roof. I put it in park once I come to a stop, sit there for a minute shut it down started back up. Finished my drive out after that happened. My stereo has kicked in and out about every 20 minutes while going down the road.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
This problem has been reported to the local dealership whom fixed the recall and they are refusing to correct the other problem that is related to the recall. The emergency brake will not release in lower freezing temperatures and or it will release and while driving seize up and stop the rear driver side tire. This causes an instant swaying of the vehicle and could potentially cause vehicle to roll if this happens at higher speeds. So far it has only happened under 35 mph. The dealership claims it’s the cable for the emergency brake that need to be replaced and there is not faulty parts that had been replaced under the recall. On that same wheel that this problem occurs the caliper has been stuck and worn. Down the pad and now is wearing into the rotor. It’s only on one side and everything that was listed under the recall for 2016 models and newer seems to match the problems with this vehicle as well. All the brakes and rotors were replaced a year ago. A tire was replaced after it had seized up and was dragging, wearing down the tire in one spot. I am asking that my vehicle have another inspection by a different facility that would be willing to look further and assist in reporting reconsideration to include the repairs that are needed on this vehicle.
THE CAR WHEN SPEEDING IT ALWAYS LIKE CRASHES SINCE NEW . WHEN YOU ACCELERATE IT DOESN'T GO RIGHT AWAY . ALSO THE BRAKES GET RUSTED RIGHT AWAY SO IT MAKES SOUND. ALSO THE AIR HEATER OR AC ARE ALWAYS WORKING EVEN WHEN ITS OFF.

The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would hesitate and jerk upon the depression of the accelerator pedal as the transmission symbol would illuminate on the instrument panel. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer where they informed him that he had a defective CVT transmission module that needed to be replaced. Upon investigation, the contact linked his failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V563000(POWER TRAIN). The contact was then informed by the dealer that his vehicle was not under recall. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY WHEN THE TRANSMISSION STARTED FEELING LIKE IT WAS SLIPPING. I PULLED OVER CHECKED ALL THE FLUIDS AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. I WAS MILES FROM THE NEAREST TOWN. SO I STARTED DRIVING AGAIN AND 2 MILES DOWN THE ROAD THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN THIS HAPPENED THE CAR STOPPED ACCELERATING AND STARTED REVVING UP. I TURNED THE HAZARD ON AND PULLED OFF ONTO THE SIDE OF A BUSY HIGHWAY. I TRIED TO ACCELERATE AGAIN AND THE ENGINE REVED AGAIN. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND STARTED IT AGAIN THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT WENT OFF. I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND WAS ABLE TO BACK UP TO GET FURTHER OVER OFF THE ROAD. I TRIED TO PUT IT IN DRIVE AND THE CAR WOULDN'T MOVE BUT THE LIGHT REMAINED OFF. I CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A SAFE LOCATION. I TOOK IT TO A DEALER SHIP AND THEY CLAIMED IT WAS THE CVT AND IT WAS INTERNAL. I WOULD HAVE TO HAVE TO WHOLE UNIT REPLACED. THEY QUOTED ME AROUND 7,000. MY BROTHER-IN-LAW CALLED TO GET MORE INFO AND THEY QUOTED HIM AROUND 4,000. THERE ARE 108,000 MILES ON MY 2015. SO IT'S OVER WARRANTY AND I FELT LIKE THEY WERE TRYING TO RIP ME OFF. I HAVE SEEN SIMILAR RECALLS FOR THIS TYPE OF THING HAPPENING. I AM CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND OTHERS WITH THIS HAPPENING OUT OF NOWHERE.

Rear liftgate lock release handle Mitsubishi part number 5810A089 (100% electrical) failed due to excessive moisture penatration in this area causing abnormal rust to the liftgate in the same location. I now notice other vehicles like mine have the same rust condition in the same area. I wash the vehicle on a regular basis and I keep it in a heated garage when I'm home.
