2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Driver assistance Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the driver-assistance system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Driver assistance reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

On the freeway TRANSMISSION FAILURE SERVICE light came on and the cars acceleration geared, had to immediately pull over on the side of the freeway, restarted the car with emergency lights to get out of the freeway. Vehicle would not accelerate much and the rpm was switching fast up and down. Check engine light came on the next day and the diagnosis read catalytic converter needs replacement. Car does not accelerate on hills, its shifts and tugs on a regular road.

This vehicle is dangerous and going to kill someone. I owned it 4 months and had to have it taken to 3 different dealerships 7 times in 6 weeks because it would die without warning while driving. It left me stranded in 2 different states and I was told every time nothing could be found as to why this would happen. However, there were several codes that came up that lead me and my mechanic to believe the transmission was failing. The dealerships did not want to fix it under my warranty so they told me nothing was wrong. I believe they also did this so that when I inevitably got them to take it back, they would have no paper trail of horrific problems to have to disclose when reselling it. I had to fight to get a new car and I was told this car would be sold wholesale and the issues would be disclosed. They were not. The dealer who bought it had no idea. Upon reaching out to them, they have made the decision to return it to the wholesale company they got it from. If nothing can be done from the NHTSA side, I will continue to track the vin and tell everyone what has occurred until that car is disposed of. Please, I implore you to get ahold of this car and scrap it completely. Someone will die if this car continues being sold as nothing was fixed and nothing was disclosed about the issues with it. Get this car off the streets. It is not safe to drive.

The car will no longer drive. It would throw itself forward uncontroably right before the transmission failed. Car has less than 50k mileage on it and was working normally previously.

I PURCHASE MY 2016 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER IN DECEMBER OF 2016. I HAD MY VEHICLE COME TO A COMPLETE WHILE ACCELERATING AND IN MOTION. THIS COULD OF KILLED ME AND MY FAMILY. MY VEHICLE HAS HAD CONSISTENT ACCELERATION AND HESITATING ISSUES WHILE ACCELERATING AND IN MOTION. SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION OR ENGINE. THERE'S A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE NOT BEING ABLE TO ACCELERATE NORMALLY AND SAFELY. MY AIR BAG LIGHT ON MY VEHICLE HAS NOT COME ON FOR OVER YEARS. I AM VERY CONCERN THAT MY AIRBAG IS DEFECTIVE AND WON'T WORK IF I GET INTO A VEHICLE ACCIDENT. I HAVE TOOK MY VEHICLE TO 2 DIFFERENT MITSUBISHI AUTO DEALERSHIPS TO HAVE THE PROBLEM LOOKED AT AND DIAGNOSED, BUT MITSUBISHI CAN'T DIAGNOSE OR DETERMINE WHAT'S CAUSING THE PROBLEM. THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH MY TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE.

ON RANDOM WHEN DRIVING ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS MY HEADLIGHT WILL GO OUT. BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. THIS MORNING WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY TO WORK, THE LIGHTS BOTH JUST WENT COMPLETELY OUT LEAVING ME IN THE DARK. I HAD TO DRIVE WITH MY BRIGHTS ON FOR SAFETY. THE SECOND PROBLEM IN THE ACCELERATION, YOU CAN PUSH THE GAS BUT IT IS HAS NO POWER TO GO AND HESITATE.

I HAVE A 2016 MITSUBISHI OUTANDER 2WD. I NOTICED AS I'M DRIVING THE RPM NEEDLE IS JUMPING UP AND DOWN. ALSO I'M LOSING POWER AS I'M DRIVING. SOMETIMES THE RPM GOES ALL THE WAY TO 4 BEFORE IT SHIFTS. I ALMOST GOT HIT IN THE BACK BECAUSE IT LOST SPEED WHILE GOING ABOUT 60MPH AND THEN IT DROP SPEED. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT ABOUT THE RECALL BUT FOR SOME REASON THEIRS NO RECALL BASED ON MY VIN#. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY. ITS ONLY 36,000 MILES

EVER SENSE I HAVE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IT HAS HAD A NOISE IN THE FRONT. IT SOUNDS AS IF IT IS COMING FROM THE CONTROL ARM. WHEN IT STARTED GETTING WORSE I CALLED TO TELL THE GUY I BOUGHT IT FROM AND HE SAID THERE WAS A LOT OF PEOPLE THINKING THIS, BUT IT IS JUST A NOISE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR. THIS ONLY HAPPENS IN REVERSE AND IT SOUNDS LIKE A POPPING NOISE COMING FROM THE BOTTOM PASSENGER TIRE. I WILL HAVE THIS LOOKED AT HOPEFULLY ON THURSDAY. ALSO, I HAVE A SMELL OF GAS COMING FROM THE ENGINE WHEN IT EITHER IDLES OR IS DRIVEN FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. I WILL HOPEFULLY HAVE THIS CHECKED OUT AS WELL. ALSO, WHEN THE CAR IS TURNED OFF I SMELL ANTIFREEZE...BADLY IN THE CAR AND ALSO OUTSIDE OF IT NEAR THE GRILL. ALSO, THE TRANSMISSION DRAGS WHEN I TRY TO ACCELERATE OR IF IT HAS BEEN DRIVING FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
