Owner-reported complaints naming the driver-assistance system, filed with NHTSA
Data refreshed
Driver assistance reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The contact owns a 2013 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while attempting to accelerate from a stop, the RPM became elevated, and the vehicle started accelerating unintendedly. The contact immediately depressed the brake pedal and entered a parking lot where the vehicle lost automotive power, and the engine shut off. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the transmission was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 52,073.

The headlights has a recall but the dealership told me if the previous owner didn't fix it, it didn't do me any justice. I have to drive with bright lights on at night because the headlights are pointed at the ground but not up ahead to see what's in front of me. It's very hard to see. I haven't had the car a year and I really love my car. The $1,600 to fix, is what the Nissian dealership in my town quoted me. I am a single mom with elementary aged kids, driving them to school, it's still little dark.

I have taken the car to 3 mechanics for 4-5 incidents knowing that the mechanics were indeed certified in professionally fixing the issue. I was driving the car and made a proper left turn, yielding to oncoming traffic when suddenly the vehicle was unable to accelerate. The other car was approaching and I pushed on the gas as hard as I could to barely get it to move out of the way, luckily avoid a collision. The car died and will restart and drive another 11 miles, repeating the process. No mechanic has been able to properly identify the cause. Please understand, I could be that "lies" to individuals in order to sell the car, but do I really want to put another person's life at such a faulty incident? Well, I recommend another recall on the issue, regardless of the cost because a little hood latch and a simple light compartment isn't anything like an unknown cause of malfunction stall towards driving in a hectic traffic.

Hello, I took my Nissan Altima into my local Nissan dealer for a hood latch recall on 11/13/2023. On 11/21/2023 at about 6:40 pm I was driving my car at a speed of maybe 45-50mph and my hood flew open hitting my windshield causing damage to my car, and scaring my son and I. I called the dealer the next morning and spoke to Anthony from the service department regarding this situation, and he stated a faulty latch could have been put on my car, causing this to happen. I sent pictures to him via email, and he advised that he would contact the director and call me back with an update. I received a callback within hours advising Nissan would cover the damages but I would need to contact consumer affairs to see which location could do the repairs as they were behind by 8 month at that location in particular and could not provide me with a loaner car. After a week of waiting for an update from a dealer to confirm repairs, I had the car towed to the Thomas Nissan of Joliet on 12/4/2023 as the car would not accelerate anymore due to the hard brake. As of today 12/18/2023 I have spoken to the service manager there and he advised parts came in but they do not have a date for repairs or approval on the acceleration issue and for now will only repair the body. I advised that I am extremely saddened by the way I am being handled after such a traumatic ordeal that could have been deadly or life altering. This recall was supposed to prevent this issue, and it only caused it. This recall hasn't done anything to fix the cars, and neither have three other hood latch recalls for Altima cars. Altima drivers are in danger from hoods that suddenly fly open while driving, and this situation just proves a problem. Nissan doesn't know how to properly repair it, and my car and I are proof.

Im not sure what the malfunction. Is but I’ve been experiencing delayed acceleration. I can be at a stop light and when it turns green I hit the gas and it won’t go until about 4 seconds later. I’m afraid i will get hit in the back or hit when turning because the delay. This also happens at stop signs or when I’m simply pulling out somewhere. When I looked it up on google many Nissan altimas are having the exact same problem. Also me and a relative have the same car and she’s been experiencing the same problem!

There is a delay in acceleration. It won't accelerate whenever I want it too. Sometimes it won't do it even if I press the pedal all the way to the floor. When it engages the accelerator it would do it at a strong force. When the problem happens I would have to constantly press and depress the pedal so it won't engage with a strong force. It happens usually that I have noticed when at a stop position ready to start to move.

The original transmission on this car failed and I had it replaced at a Nissan Dealership. In less than two years, the new transmission also failed. I was driving on the highway and transmission gave up and the vehicle would not accelerate putting my Life and others' life in danger/unsafe. I contacted Nissan consumer/customer service and the case manager was not helpful and literally, stonewalled my concerns. Gross negligence by Nissan about the vehicle owners and their safety. The Nissan Altima cars that were manufactured between 2013-2015 are pure LEMONS.

I HAVE 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA S. IT HAS ~89K MILES ON IT. THE TRANSMISSION STOPPED WORKING ON 10/11/2020. HOW CAN NHTSA ASSIST? NISSAN REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE CVTS INSTALLED IN THE NISSAN ALTIMAS HAVE CAUSED A VARIETY OF PROBLEMS - SHAKING, LOSING ACCELERATION AND STALLING, AMONG OTHERS - ACCORDING TO OWNERS WHO ARE REGULARLY POSTING COMPLAINTS ON WEBSITES SUCH AS AUTONEWS.COM, CARCOMPLAINTS.COM, AND CARS.COM. NISSAN ALTIMA OWNERS HAVE SECURED A SETTLEMENT OFFER FROM THE CARMAKER WHICH WOULD RESOLVE CLAIMS THAT THE VEHICLES' TRANSMISSIONS FAIL PREMATURELY. LEAD PLAINTIFFS ALLEGED THAT 2013 THROUGH 2016 NISSAN ALTIMAS SUFFER FROM SHUDDERING, HESITATION, STALLING, AND NOISES STEMMING FROM DEFECTIVE CONTINUOUS VARIABLE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.VACCORDING TO THE NISSAN CLASS ACTION, VEHICLES STALL UNEXPECTEDLY, CAUSING THEM TO STOP IN TRAFFIC WITHOUT ILLUMINATING THE BRAKE LIGHTS.VCONVERSELY, THE DEFECT COULD ALSO ALLEGEDLY CAUSE AN UNEXPECTED SURGE IN POWER, CAUSING DRIVERS TO LOSE CONTROL.VVDESPITE CONSUMER COMPLAINTS, NISSAN REPORTEDLY FORCED OWNERS TO PAY FOR A $3,000 FIX THAT OFTEN LEFT THEM WITH MORE DEFECTIVE PARTS.CASE # 42179365. DUE TO COVID, MY ISSUE SURFACED AFTER 7 YEAR DEADLINE ON MAY 11, 2020. THIS IS WRONG AND NISSAN WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT. I TRIED TO WORK WITH MADISON AT NISSAN 615-725-7208. I AM HAVING THE WORK DONE BASED ON DIAGNOSIS FROM WRIGHT NISSAN. THE WORK WILL COST ME ABOUT $3,500. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES INTO MY DRIVE, I STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT. WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE, MY CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. AFTER 2-3 SECONDS IT DECIDED TO ACCELERATE. ABOUT ANOTHER HALF MILE DOWN THE ROAD AT THE NEXT STOP LIGHT, IT DID IT AGAIN. EACH TIME, I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED BY CARS BEHIND ME TRYING TO GET TO THE INTERSTATE. THE CAR IS NOW AT THE DEALERSHIP BEING LOOKED AT.

INITIALLY, THE VEHICLE TREMBLED AND CUT OFF AT TRAFFIC LIGHT. MECHANIC DISCOVERED THAT IT THREW A CODE WITH FLUID PRESSURE SENSOR ISSUE IN TRANSMISSION. REPLACED TRANSMISSION WITH USED ONE...SAME CODE. REPLACED THAT ONE WITH REBUILT TRANSMISSION, THROWING THE SAME CODE. IF TRYING TO ENTER ROAD, IT MAY FEEL STRONG ENOUGH TO ENTER HIGHWAY, THEN LOSSES THROTTLE RESPONSE. IT MAY CONTINUE WITH ABOUT 20 MPH SPEED. THEN AGAIN, IT MAY START OFF ALRIGHT AND BECOMES OBVIOUS AT SOME SPEEDS THAT THE RPM IS GREATER THAN IT SHOULD BE FOR THE SPEED VEHICLE IS MOVING. NISSAN DEALERSHIP HAS HAD VEHICLE FOR WELL OVER 2 WEEKS AND HAVE NO ANSWERS. ASKED THEM TO CHECK ELECTRICAL AND THE COMPUTER, STILL NO ANSWERS AND HARDLY ANY COMMUNICATIONS AT ALL. IT IS WELL DOCUMENTED THAT THE CVT TRANSMISSIONS ARE A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES, BUT AFTER THE ISSUES EXPERIENCED, THIS COULD BE A POSSIBLE COMPUTER ISSUE. EITHER WAY IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND A LOT OF MONEY SPENT WITH NO RESULTS. *TR

COST ESTIMATE TO REPAIR FROM $800 TO $5,000 DEPENDING THE LEVEL OF DEFECT. OWNER BELIEVES THIS SHOULD BE NISSAN'S RESPONSIBILITY, AS IT'S NOT DUE TO NEGLIGENCE. *TR

WHILE DRIVING MY CAR AND MERGING ONTO A BUSY INTERSTATE, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, TRACTION CONTROL, AND BLIND SPOT MONITORING ERROR LIGHTS ALL CAME ON THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE RPM GAUGE WOULD GO UP AND THE CAR WOULD TRY TO GO, BUT IT JUST WOULDN'T. I ALMOST GOT REAR ENDED BY A SEMI TRUCK BECAUSE MY CAR WASN'T ABLE TO GO OR MOVE OUT OF THE WAY. I LEFT IT IN A SHOP FOR OVER A WEEK AND APPARENTLY IT'S SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE CVT TRANSMISSION AND SPEED SENSORS. I CONTACTED NISSAN AND ALL THEY WOULD TELL ME WAS THAT THEY DID AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THOSE TRANSMISSIONS UP TO 130,000 MILES, HOWEVER MY CAR WAS ROUGHLY 2,000 MILES OVER THIS AND WAS NOT COVERED BY THAT WARRANTY. THEY TOLD ME ALL I COULD DO WAS REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AND THAT WAS GOING TO COST ME ROUGHLY $4,000. I'M ALMOST SCARED TO DRIVE IT ANYWHERE THERE'S LOTS OF TRAFFIC OR FAST MOVING TRAFFIC FOR FEAR OF SOMEONE RUNNING INTO ME. ALSO WHEN ALL OF THOSE DASH LIGHTS COME ON, THE TRACTION CONTROL ISN'T WORKING AND I'VE HAD TO DRIVE IN THE RAIN SEVERAL TIMES. I JUST BELIEVE IT'S OVERALL DANGEROUS AND NISSAN ISN'T DOING ANYTHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM FOR CARS THAT HAVE SOMEHOW MANAGED TO MAKE IT OVER 130,000 MILES. I KNOW SEVERAL PEOPLE WHO'VE HAD SIMILAR THINGS HAPPEN WITH THEIR NISSAN CAR THAT HAS THIS TRANSMISSION. I DO BELIEVE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT MALFUNCTIONS AT ANY GIVEN TIME JUST RANDOMLY. I CAN BE DRIVING AND IT'S FINE ONE MINUTE, THE NEXT THING I KNOW ALL OF THESE DASH LIGHTS ARE LIT UP AND THE CAR WON'T ACCELERATE.

THE 7 INCH CENTRAL AUDIO-VISUAL AND NAVIGATION UNIT PERIODICALLY CHANGES RADIO STATIONS, CRASHES THE NAVIGATION DISPLAY, OR CRASHES ENTIRELY GOING BLANK, AND MAY OR MAY NOT ASK FOR SD CARD UPON REBOOT. ON ONE OCCASION THE ACCELERATOR ALSO STUCK REQUIRING THE CAR TO TAKEN TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED OFF. CANNOT BE SURE IF THE TWO EVENTS WERE RELATED BUT THEY HAPPENED SIMULTANEOUSLY. IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS THE MISBEHAVIOR OF THE CENTRAL DISPLAY UNIT HAS GOTTEN WORSE AND WORSE. NISSAN DEALER AND NATIONAL SUPPORT ARE UNABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM OR BEING WILLING TO FIX IT. THERE IS NO ESCALATION PROCEDURE TO FACTORY ENGINEERING AND MAINTENANCE SUPPORT. THEY WILL NOT TAKE THE ELEMENTARY STEP TO REFLASH THE FIRMWARE OR BEING WILLING TO CHANGE OUT THE UNIT. MULTIPLE EXAMPLES OF THIS PROBLEM ARE REPORTED ONLINE IN NISSAN'S OWNER PORTAL FOR THIS MODEL YEAR AND THE NEXT. DESPITE BEING ORIGINALLY TOLD THAT NISSAN IS TRYING TO TRACK CARS WITH THIS KNOWN PROBLEM THAT NISSAN REFUSES TO ADDRESS AND LEAVING A POTENTIAL SAFETY PROBLEM UNRESOLVED.

WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT MY CAR THE HEADLIGHTS WORKED FINE, NOW THEY ARE SO DIM YOU CANNOT SEE WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT OR IN THE RAIN. I SPOKE WITH A MECHANIC TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH THE LIGHT, AND TOLD ME THAT THE CHROME AROUND THE LIGHT BULB IS NOT REFLECTING THE LIGHT OF THE BULB AND THAT IS WHY ITS SO DIM. HE ALSO ADVISED ME THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE THAT HE SEES IN NISSAN ALTIMAS 2012 AND ABOVE. THE COST FOR REPLACING THE HEADLIGHTS IS ABOUT 1200 DOLLARS TO FIX.

REAR CONTROL ARM ON MY NISSAN ALTIMA 2013 CAME APART ON AN INTERSTATE PUSHING ME ON TO THE LEFT LANE ALMOST AT 65 MPH. GOT REALLY SCARED AS I USUALLY DRIVE WITH MY NEW BORN BUT LUCKILY HE WAS NOT IN THE CAR WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 60K MILES AND I HAD TO REPLACE THEM ON BOTH SIDES ON THE REAR AS THEY MENTIONED THE OTHER ONE TOO IS GOING TO BREAK SOON. REALLY DISAPPOINTED AS HAD TO MAKE A HUGE REPAIR SPENDING 1300 BUCKS FOR A CAR THAT IS ONLY USED TO RUN FEW ERRANDS OVER THE WEEKEND AS I COMMUTE ON TRAIN FOR WORK. *DT*JB

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE AND SLIP WARNING INDICATORS REMAINED ILLUMINATED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED OR WHEN SHIFTING OUT OF DRIVE. ALSO, WHILE DRIVING HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER, THE TRANSMISSION GEARS FAILED TO CHANGE OVER, AND THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN. THE VEHICLE WAS COASTED OFF THE ROAD AND PARKED. BALISE NISSAN OF CAPE COD (322 FALMOUTH RD, HYANNIS, MA 02601, (508) 815-4010) WAS CONTACTED AND INDICATED THAT AN UNKNOWN MANUFACTURER CAMPAIGN REGARDING THE REPROGRAMMING OF THE CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (CVT) FAILED. THE DEALER RECOMMENDED THAT THE VEHICLE BE DIAGNOSED TO DETERMINE IF THE CVT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO BE DRIVEN AND THE MANUFACTURER DID NOT VOLUNTEER TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 122,000.

NOT 2 YEARS YET OF OWNERSHIP AND MY CAR DECIDES TO NOT ACCELERATE ON ME. I WOULD HAVE TO FLOOR IT TO GET IT TO FINALLY KICK IN AND DRIVE UNTIL I STOPPED AT THE NEXT LIGHT. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS OR ANYTHING LETTING ME KNOW OF ANY PROBLEMS. HAD 2 NEAR COLLISIONS WITH MY FAMILY IN THE CAR TRYING TO GET MY CAR TO THE DEALER TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. DEALER THOUGHT IT WAS TRANSMISSION AND ALTERNATOR BUT UPON WARRANTY REP DIAGNOSING VEHICLE, IT WAS DECIDED THAT IT NEEDED A NEW ALTERNATOR. WAS WITHOUT MY VEHICLE FOR ALMOST 3 DAYS BUT PUT IN A RENTAL FROM THEIR DEALER WHICH WASN'T ANY BETTER WITH A CONSTANT NOISE WHILE DRIVING. A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN AS I WAS GETTING ON THE FREEWAY AFTER WORK WITH MY SON. HAD TO GET OFF AND DRIVE TO THE DEALER. APPARENTLY, THEY FIXED THE WRONG THING. A FEW DAYS AFTER PICKING UP MY VEHICLE FROM GETTING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FIXED, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AGAIN. DIDN'T NOTE ANYTHING MAJOR WHILE DRIVING BUT WAS JUST AWFUL HAVING TO TAKE BACK THE VEHICLE WHEN I HAD JUST PICKED IT UP LITERALLY 2-3 DAYS BEFORE. THE DEALER KEPT MY VEHICLE THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS AND IT TOOK THEM 3 DAYS TO DETERMINE WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT. I WAS FINALLY TOLD THAT I NEEDED A THROTTLE CHAMBER REPLACED. WAS NEVER TOLD WHAT THE PART WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR DOING AND WHY IT WASN'T FOUND WHEN THEY HAD IT PREVIOUSLY. STILL NOT 2 YEARS OF OWNING THE VEHICLE. PERSONALLY, TOO MANY ISSUES WITH MY 2013 ALTIMA VEHICLE IN LESS THAN 2 YEARS AND NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS KEEPS WASHING THEIR HANDS OF ANY DEFECT OR LEMON LAW. THESE THINGS WHICH I HAVE EXPERIENCED ARE NOT LITTLE OR MINOR BY NO MEANS AND HAVE ENDANGERED MYSELF AND MY FAMILY, ESPECIALLY THE INCIDENTS WITH THE ALTERNATOR AND THE MAS SENSOR. NEED SOMEONE WITH COMMON SENSE AND A TRUE FEELING OF CARING FOR THEIR CUSTOMER'S SAFETY TO REPLACE MY VEHICLE BEFORE SOMETHING WORSE HAPPENS.
