2000 Nissan Frontier Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2000 Nissan Frontier, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Reports by component

Ranked by how many owner reports name each component category

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

WENT TO MY LOCAL GARAGE TO GET MY TIRES BALANCED. MECHANIC REPORTED THAT 1 OF THE 4 TIRES (ALL BOUGHT TOGETHER) WAS BEGINNING TO COME APART INTERNALLY / BELT SEPARATION. THE TIRES WERE INSTALLED DURING OCTOBER OF 2019. THEY HAVE LESS THAN 8000 MILES ON THE TIRES. VENDOR IS REIMBURSING ME FOR THE ONE TIRE THAT WAS FOUND TO HAVE THE DEFECT. THANKFULLY THIS WAS CAUGHT EARLY, BUT AM VERY CONCERNED AS THE OTHER 3 TIRES HAVE THE SAME DOT NUMBER.

From my Internet search using Google Gemini, (and Google AI has a disclaimer it can make errors), I have replaced my distributer on my 2000 Nissan Frontier three times now due to a stalling problem I have experienced on hot days. My 2000 Nissan Frontier is VIN [XXX] . Let's see how much Gemini info I can paste here: "The distributor on your KA24DE engine contains the camshaft position sensor, which is a critical component for engine timing. The distributor itself can fail for a number of reasons, including: Internal bearing failure: The bearing that the distributor shaft spins on can fail, causing the shaft to wobble or seize up. This disrupts the signal from the camshaft position sensor. Failed or failing camshaft position sensor: The sensor itself can fail due to age, heat, or internal electrical issues. Ignition coil failure: The ignition coil is often integrated into the distributor housing on this engine. As it heats up, it can fail and lose spark, causing the engine to stall. The reason this issue is often related to hot weather or a hot engine is that the heat can cause the internal components of the distributor to expand and fail, and it can also cause the ignition coil to break down more easily. Symptoms of Distributor Failure The symptoms for a failing distributor on the 2.4L are very similar to those of the V6 engine: Stalling, especially when hot: This is the most common symptom. The engine may run perfectly when cold, but after it has been running for a while and the engine compartment is hot, it may stall and refuse to restart until it cools down. Engine runs poorly: You may experience a rough idle, misfires, or a loss of power. Hard start or no start: A failing distributor can cause the engine to crank but not start, as it is unable to produce a spark." Nissan no longer provides a replacement distributor and I suspect aftermarket are rebuilds. ***Stalling in traffic I believe is a definite safety issue*** Please let me know. THERE WAS A SHORT IN THE FUSE BOX THAT CAUSED A FIRE THAT BURNED UP THE BATTERY, THE HOSES AND MOST OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. PRIOR TO THE FIRE THE VEHICLE WAS STALLING DURING TURNS. THIS OCCURRED FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES OF DRIVING WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN TO A GARAGE. THE FIRE STARTED AS THE TRUCK TURNED INTO THE GARAGE PARKING LOT SO IT WAS PUT OUT QUICKLY. I CONTACTED NISSAN, AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT INVESTIGATE OR LOOK AT THE VEHICLE UNLESS I PAID TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A NISSAN DEALER AND PAID THE NISSAN DEALER TO HAVE A MECHANIC WITH NO C&O TRAINING LOOK AT THE VEHICLE. I CALLED NISSAN BACK AND THEY SAID THAT WAS THERE FINAL DECISION AND NO ONE FROM NISSAN COULD DO ANYTHING ELSE. *AK

The contact owns a 2000 Nissan Frontier. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the rear taillight bulb would eject from the retaining clip inside the socket of the taillight assembly. She became aware of the failure after purchasing replacement bulbs for what she thought were blown bulbs. After several failures, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who physically held the bulb in place inside the assembly. After letting go of the bulb, the failure recurred. The local dealer and manufacturer were contacted and informed of the failure. The manufacturer notified the contact of NHTSA Campaign Number: 99V347002 (Exterior Lighting) however, the VIN was not included. The contact was then referred to NHTSA for assistance. (1). AT HIGHER SPEEDS, MY 2000 NISSAN FRONTIER TRUCK'S DASHBOARD DIALS MALFUNCTION. THIS OCCURS FREQUENTLY. (2). THE DIALS EITHER DROP TO ZERO -- THE ODOMETER, SPEEDOMETER AND TEMPERATURE GUAGES -- AS IF THE VEHICLE WERE NOT RUNNING, OR THEY GET STUCK AT THE SPEED. THEY REMAIN STUCK OR INACTIVE FOR PERIODS OF UP TO 4 HOURS. ALSO, THE DIGITAL MILEAGE DISAPPEARS OR SKEWS SO THAT IT IS NOT READABLE. ON TWO OCCASIONS THE VEHICLE RAPIDLY DECELLERATED AS IF IT WERE RESPONDING TO THE DASHBOARD DIALS DROPPING. (3) THE DEALERSHIP -- GUNN NISSAN OF SAN ANTONIO TEXAS -- WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE DEFECT IN FOUR VISITS. ON THE FIFTH VISIT, THE DEALER'S SERVICE MANAGER WAS ABLE TO DETECT THE DEFECT. GUNN ADVISED THAT THE ENTIRE DASHBOARD SYSTEM WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THEY ATTRIBUTED THE DEFECT TO THE VEHICLES MILEAGE -- NOW 89,000 -- HOWEVER, AT THE TIME OF THE FIRST OCCURENCE THE MILEAGE WAS LESS THAT 50,000. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW FROM GUNN NISSAN. THE PROBLEM WAS NTO DETECTED UNTIL THE WARRANTY PERIOD EXPIRED. *AK
