Safety investigations
NHTSA inquiries naming this vehicle. An investigation is not a finding of a defect.
Complete loss of motive power due to engine failure
On December 13, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-023 to investigate allegations of engine failures leading to loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue; MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; and MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50 vehicles. At that time, ODI had received 6 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) and multiple early warning reports, with consumers reporting engine knocking noises accompanied by a loss of engine power while driving. The investigation identified bearing failures in certain vehicles equipped with the subject 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. ODI also identified early warning reports describing thermal incidents that occurred immediately after the vehicle suffered a catastrophic engine failure. The failures were the result of a manufacturing defect in specific engine bearings (main, A-, C-, and L-link) or other engine components that may cause engine damage and potentially lead to engine failure. Engine failure can result in a loss of motive power event that can increase the risk of a crash. Engine failure might also result in a fire if internal components detach and impact the engine block creating a hole that allows engine oil to reach hot surfaces. In its April 2024, May 2024, and June 2025 responses to ODI’s information requests, Nissan provided 998 customer reports (including complaints, field reports, and legal claims) and 1,107 warranty claims related to the alleged defect. When combining ODI and manufacturer report data, there are 1,878 unique VINs that have experienced failures across all subject vehicles. In one of the early warning reports, ODI identified an incident involving a 2022 Infiniti QX55 that resulted in an engine fire following an alleged engine failure. The 2022 Infiniti QX55 was not included in the scope of this investigation but the vehicle model shares the same 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo engine. Based on the information included with the early warning report, the fire can be directly related to the alleged defect. A further review of ODI and manufacturer data, identified 12 allegations of engine compartment fires in subject vehicles; three were confirmed as directly related to the engine failure, and nine reports described an under-hood fire that occurred following a loss of power event. Additionally, ODI identified multiple reports describing an engine block crack or hole surrounded by oil residue following an engine failure. On June 27, 2025, Nissan submitted recall 25V-437 involving 443,899 MY 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue, MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50; and 2022 Infiniti QX55 vehicles. The recall remedy provides the dealer instructions to inspect the engine oil pan for the presence of specific metal debris. For customers with the 3-cylinder 1.5L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected during the inspection, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil, and reprogram the vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM). For customers with the 4-cylinder 2.0L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected, dealers will replace the engine oil. In the case where specific debris is detected and confirmed by Nissan Powertrain Call Center, dealers will be instructed to replace the engine. In addition, Nissan will extend the vehicle warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles for the recall subject vehicle population after the dealer performs the inspection. Nissan has implemented multiple corrective actions to address the identified manufacturing defects of certain engine block internal components. In view of the recall action (25V437) taken by Nissan, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. While driving my 2022 Nissan Rogue, the engine suddenly shut off without warning and the vehicle would not restart. There is an active engine recall, but Nissan has not provided a repair or parts for several months. This unexpected loss of power put my family’s safety and mine at risk, as the incident could have caused a serious accident if it had occurred in traffic or on a freeway. The dealer confirmed the recall but cannot complete the repair until Nissan provides instructions. No warning lights appeared before the failure, though the Lane Departure and Collision Warning lights came on after the stall.

My engine kept having a rough performance in idle and driving. It made rattling noises when accelerating. Took it to Nissan dealerships multiple times and was told it was SAFE TO DRIVE in that condition and it can be in regards to the current safety recall on this vehicle. They REFUSED to provide a loaner or state I may need to stop driving this car. There is currently no remedy available. My car finally gave out on 10/26/25 when THICK WHITE SMOKE came out of it as I’m driving causing me to lose power on an expressway that maintains speeds up to 60 MPH or more. I could’ve have been ran into from behind . I had it towed to the dealership they submitted info to the warranty department. And they DENIED it stating it had nothing to do with recall. When it fact it does because the inter cooler and turbo are a part of the engine and the recall states the defect can cause other engine components to fail. NISSAN IS A COMPLETE JOKE. No warning lights came on or anything in regards to this issue even when the engine failed.

I had been having issues with my vehicle randomly stalling out when I would start it and put it into reverse. It also was hesitating during acceleration at times. On 9/2/25 I took it to a Nissan dealership for these issues and was told they couldn’t find anything wrong. I specifically asked if it could be related to the recall I had just received notice about in the mail and was told ‘probably not’. The issues persisted off and on the next few weeks and I was about to call them to let them know things were still not working right and some things had gotten worst (like almost stalling out in the middle of the day at a light). On 10/21/25 (6 weeks after the dealership said there was nothing wrong with my car) I started having major problems driving home and the heat would not work. I barely got it home and by then it was running very rough. Husband looked and said there was almost no antifreeze and added some. He said I couldn’t drive it and we had to tow it in the morning. Tow truck driver nearly started it on fire because he couldn’t get it into service mode and it started smoking terribly for the 30 seconds it was on. Nissan Dealership (different one) said there were five 2022 Nissan Roque’s with the same problem ahead of me. After almost a week they called to tell me Nissan is replacing the ‘engine long block and turbo’. I’ve had to rent a car at $400/week and have no idea how long this is going to take. Thankful I wasn’t driving when things got really bad. Also - NO service lights have ever come on indicating anything was wrong at any point.

Fuel Tank Dealer Inventory *****Dealer Announcement***** Nissan is now escalating the temporary Quality Assurance (QA) Hold on 196 specific model year 2022 Nissan Rogue vehicles in Service Comm to a dealer inventory quality action to inspect, and if necessary, replace the fuel tank. Nissan is continuing its investigation of a potential fuel tank puncture. Affected vehicles are subject to stop sale and are either currently in dealer inventory or assigned and in transit to the dealer. *****What Dealers Should Do***** 1. Verify if vehicles are affected by this quality hold using Service Comm or DBS National Service History â Open Campaigns I.D. PC903 ⢠New vehicles in dealer inventory can also be identified using DBS (Sales-> Vehicle Inventory, and filter by Open Campaign). ï§ Refer to NPSB 15-460 for additional information ⢠Some vehicles may still be in transit. Please continue to check newly arriving inventory for QA Hold applicability. 2. Please do not drive, loan, rent, sell or trade the specific vehicles in dealer inventory subject to this quality hold. 3. Use the attached procedure to inspect and, if necessary, remedy any vehicles affected by this quality action: ⢠If parts are needed, dealers may place an order via the normal process. 4. URGENT: The service department should submit the applicable warranty claim for the action performed as soon as the action is completed so it can be closed on Service Comm, and release the vehicle. 5. NOTE: Parts replaced under this quality action will be collected through the Nissan Part Return Program to help with Nissanâs continued investigation. If a Part Return Required Notification is received by the dealer, it is important for dealers to return parts applicable specifically to the VIN and repair order identified.
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
