The contact owned a 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport. The contact stated that while parking the vehicle in a parking space, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle accelerated unintendedly. The front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor failed. When the passenger seat is completely empty and vacant, the dashboard airbag warning light illuminates and stays on. However, when an adult sits in the passenger seat, the warning light turns off and the system functions normally. This indicates the sensor mat inside the seat cushion has lost its "zero-point" baseline calibration or suffered an internal electronic failure, causing it to read a ghost weight when empty. The component is still installed in the vehicle and is available for inspection. Safety is severely put at risk because a malfunctioning OCS sensor can cause the vehicle's computer to miscalculate passenger weight during a collision. This could lead to the frontal passenger airbag deploying with incorrect force, or failing to deploy at all, significantly increasing the risk of injury or death to an occupant. The problem happens consistently every time the vehicle is turned on with an empty seat, but it has not yet been formally inspected by a dealer, independent service center, police, or insurance. The only warning symptom prior to this failure was the sudden appearance of the dashboard airbag indicator light, which now stays illuminated continuously whenever the passenger seat is empty.

Vehicle has plume of blue smoke each time it turns on, burning oil. Was informed by mechanic that it is a bad piston ring, which is common with this vehicle’s engine. It will eat through a full engine of oil in two months. 4K-10k fix. Car has 71k miles on it; under 10k miles put on it a year. Gets regular oil changes based on typical recommendation for a low mileage vehicle. Oil is checked regularly. This is in addition to a bad intake fan that needed replacing and cost 1.5k that others have been complaining of where the car would severely overheat.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined there was a failure with the electrical system for the crumple zone; the occupant sensor, ignition, and that the voltage was low. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 167,000.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
