Owner-reported complaints naming the seat belt system, filed with NHTSA
Data refreshed
Seat belts reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Date of Incident: [XXX] On [XXX], my sister and I traveled from Maryland to Newport News, Virginia, to celebrate with family. Upon returning home to Maryland, my sister attempted to fasten her front passenger seat belt but was unable to do so. I went around to the passenger side of the vehicle to assist her, but I was also unable to properly secure the seat belt. Because I have a strict safety rule requiring all passengers to wear their seat belts, I instructed my sister to move to the back seat so that she could travel safely. The following day, I took my vehicle to Auto Obsessions, located at 20 Southway, Greenbelt, MD 20770, for an inspection. After inspecting the vehicle, the mechanic informed me that the passenger-side seat belt was locked in place as though the vehicle had been involved in a head-on collision. I was advised that the seat belt retractor needed to be replaced. The mechanic sent a link to my phone so that I could order the replacement part through eBay. I subsequently ordered the part. Once it was delivered, I planned to schedule an appointment with the mechanic to have the replacement installed. While investigating the problem, I learned that certain Nissan Rogue models from multiple model years have been subject to safety recalls involving the Occupant Classification System (OCS) and airbag control units, including issues that can cause the airbag warning light to illuminate. Because of the seriousness of the safety issue I was experiencing, I contacted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at 888-327-4236. I spoke with a NHTSA representative and explained what had occurred. I provided my vehicle identification number (VIN). The representative informed me that, although there was a recall involving my vehicle's year and model, my particular VIN was not included in the recall. I was advised to contact Nissan directly and ask whether Nissan would provide a "goodwill" assistance offer: INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FO

The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the front passenger's side seat belt seized, and the air bag warning light illuminated. Additionally, the failure reoccurred while a minor grandchild was seated in the front passenger's seat. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The contact was informed that the repair was not covered under recall. The contact was advised to contact the manufacturer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact referenced an unknown recall; however, the VIN was not associated with a recall related to the failure. It started when I purchased it in February 2025 Mileage was 99200 I noticed the seatbelt warning signs didn’t ding if I didn’t have my seatbelt on. And the sunroof not only was leaking but it is coming apart where it is held in place I’m afraid it will suddenly come down and strike me without notice while driving. Theee days ago I noticed the airbag light came on while I had the driver assist engaged so I stopped and turned the driver assistance light on and then off which caused the airbag light to turn off . But today with 1100 miles on the vehicle I was driving and the light. Came on as I was driving again. I tried turning off the drivers assistance button but the light stays on!!! I’m concerned about the safety while driving with the airbag light, the seatbelt not signaling when the seatbelt is not on it ding to remind me that someone doesn’t have their seat belt on. At lastly , I believe that I am going to be injured by the sunroof motor fulling down while I am driving causing a car wreck and or injuring me or a passenger. The OCS system in the 2015 model needs to be fixed before serious injury occurs.

Crash reported1 injury reported
I was traveling east bound and trash collection truck was parked on the shoulder facing east. I could not see the truck because of the position of the sun, and when I did see the parked trash truck, I swerved to miss it but struck the left rear of the parked trash truck with the right front of my vehicle going 35mph. Air bags did not deploy nor did the seat belt lock. I was tranferred to the hospital and sustained 4 broken ribs and an abrasion on my right elbow. Police department and EMS did see that air bags did not deploy. Police report shows code for the air bag and seat belt malfunctions. No warning messages etc of any kind showed up.

On September 18, 2022 our front passenger seatbelt stopped working. Nothing happened to cause it to break, but it locked up and is unable to be used. The earliest I could get an appointment to have it looked at was September 28, 2022. I brought it in that day and was told that the part was being ordered and would arrive within 2-3 days. A week later, after still not hearing from Nissan, I called and was told that the part had been shipped but that there was no delivery information. Another week went by and this time when I called I was told the part was on backorder. I've spoken with Nissan's Consumer Affairs and was told that this would be escalated but it still hasn't been fixed. A broken seatbelt puts anyone in that seat at risk.

The passenger front seatbelt is locked and cannot be used. Was working fine day before then went to use it and it was locked. My mechanic checked it out and stated that I needed a new retractor. I think this should be covered by the Nissan manufacuture, as it is a safety issue. My car is seven years old and only has 54,000 miles. I have had two other new cars, which both have lasted me for 16 years each and I have never had any problems with the seats belts at all. I would appreciate your assistance to have them repair this issue ASAP., as it is a safety issure that should not have occured. Thank you Toni Smiles

THE MIDDLE SEAT BELT BUCKLE IN THE BACKSEAT WILL NOT UNBUCKLE. THE METAL PART WILL COME AS MUCH AS HALFWAY OUT, BUT CANNOT FULLY BE RELEASED FROM THE BUCKLE. THIS SEAT BELT IS RARELY USED, BUT NOW NO ONE CAN SIT THERE BECAUSE IT IS PERMANENTLY ENGAGED. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. WE WERE TRYING TO LOAD FIVE PEOPLE IN THE CAR. THE PERSON IN THE MIDDLE SEAT WANTED TO MOVE. THEY COULD NOT REMOVE THE SEAT BELT. WE HAD TO STRETCH THE SEAT BELT AND HAVE THEM CLIMB OUT OF THE LOCKED SEAT BELT. OBVIOUSLY IF THIS HAD BEEN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION, THE OCCUPANT WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAPPED IN THE SEAT BELT.

ISSUE WITH THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT ON A 2015 NISSAN ROGUE. THE ISSUE IS THAT A FULL-SIZE ADULT (150 AND 240 POUNDS) CAN BE IN THE SEAT THE PASSENGER AIRBAG INDICATOR INDICATES THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG IS OFF. THERE IS NO AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH. I'VE TAKEN IT TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES AND THE COMPUTER AND AIRBAG SYSTEM HAS BEEN FLASHED, BUT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. SINCE THEN THE DEALSHIP HAS PUSHED ME OFF, EVEN WITH PHOTOS AND EVIDENCE OF THIS HAPPENING. I HAVE THREATEN THEM WITH A LAWSUIT BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT LOOK FURTHER IN TO IT, IF THE AIRBAG DOES NOT DEPLOY WHEN A FULL-SIZE ADULT IS IN THE SEAT. I WILL BE TAKING THE VEHICLE TO A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP THIS WEEK, BECAUSE THIS ISSUE IS CONTINUE TO HAPPEN. I AM CURRENTLY AN PURSUING AN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DEGREE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND WILL CONTINUE TO USE THEIR RESOURCES TO I FIND SOMEONE WHO WILL RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THE ONLY RESOLUTION FOR THIS ISSUE, WHEN IT HAPPENS, IS TO PARK THE CAR AND TURN IT OFF, LET IT SIT, AND TURN THE CAR BACK ON TO SEE IF THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS ON OR NOT. THE CAR HAS CURRENTLY 43,068 MILES AND IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. ALSO ALL RECALLS AND MAINTENANCE IS COMPLETED AT A NISSAN DEALERSHIP. I'VE ALSO HAD ISSUES WITH SEAT BELT LIGHT IN THE DASH SAYS THAT SOMEONE IS UN-BUCKLED WHILE EVERYONE IN THE VEHICLE IS ACTUALLY BUCCKLED, AND HAS BEEN BUCKLED.

DRIVER AIR BAG DID NOT GO OFF..I HIT THE STERRING WHEEL SO HARD THAT I FRACTURED A RIB AND A SWOLLEN CHEST INSIDE AND OUT..ABOUT 8 MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT IT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG BUT I AM THINKING THAT THE DRIVER SIDE SHOULD BE CHECKED AS WELL. I WAS GOING THRU A GREEN LIGHT ON A CITY STREET AND A LADY RAN THE RED LIGHT COMING FROM THE OTHER WAY. I BRAKED AND LAID ON THE HORN WHEN I SAW HER COMING OUT AND SWERVED MY CAR BUT COULDN'T AVOID HER. FIRST IT WAS A NO FAULT BUT THEN SHE WAS PROVEN TO GO THRU THE RED LIGHT. LUCKY I HAD MY SEATBELT ON BUT THAT DIDN'T EVEN STOP ME FROM HITTING THE STEERING WHEEL HARD!!
