Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

712,458 units potentially affected
The defect: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles equipped with a jackknife style ignition key. The jackknife key may collapse into a folded position while driving.
The risk: Driver contact with a key in the collapsed position could inadvertently shut off the vehicle while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the vehicle shuts off while driving, the air bags may not deploy in a crash as intended, increasing the risk of injury.
The remedy: Dealers will insert a spacer into the key slot of the jackknife key, free of charge. Interim notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed March 29, 2023. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 30, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22C5.

The defect: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Rogue vehicles. The electrical connector for the under dash harness may corrode due to water and salt intrusion from the driver's side foot well.
The risk: Corrosion in the electrical connector can result in power window/seat failure, all-wheel-drive warning light illumination, battery drainage, and electrical connector damage that increases the risk of a fire.
The remedy: Dealers will remove the harness tape and harness covering and replace both connectors and apply white lithium grease to the connectors as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 23, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R21B9.

AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION

Dec 19, 2016
757 units potentially affected
The defect: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima vehicles manufactured January 3, 2013, to July 29, 2013, 2015-2016 Rogue vehicles manufactured October 14, 2014, to August 12, 2016, and 2016 Maxima vehicles manufactured June 4, 2015, to August 19, 2015. An incorrect Occupant Classification System (OCS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may have been installed in the front passenger seat. The incorrect ECU and seat combination may misclassify the front passenger seat occupant.
The risk: If the front passenger seat occupant is misclassified, the air bag may deploy incorrectly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
The remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ECU and update the OCS software free of charge. The recall began February 13, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Side curtain air bags may deploy inadvertently

Opened May 31, 2024

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received multiple Early Warning Reporting (EWR) field reports alleging inadvertent deployment of the side curtain air bags in Model Year (MY) 2015 Nissan Rogue Select vehicles.  The field reports allege the side curtain air bags inadvertently deploy after the door is shut and/or slammed.  Inadvertent deployment of an air bag can cause occupants to be injured or result in the loss of protection from the air bag when needed in a crash. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to assess the scope, frequency, and severity of the inadvertent deployment allegations.

Filed Aug 12, 2026

Date of Incident: [XXX] On [XXX], my sister and I traveled from Maryland to Newport News, Virginia, to celebrate with family. Upon returning home to Maryland, my sister attempted to fasten her front passenger seat belt but was unable to do so. I went around to the passenger side of the vehicle to assist her, but I was also unable to properly secure the seat belt. Because I have a strict safety rule requiring all passengers to wear their seat belts, I instructed my sister to move to the back seat so that she could travel safely. The following day, I took my vehicle to Auto Obsessions, located at 20 Southway, Greenbelt, MD 20770, for an inspection. After inspecting the vehicle, the mechanic informed me that the passenger-side seat belt was locked in place as though the vehicle had been involved in a head-on collision. I was advised that the seat belt retractor needed to be replaced. The mechanic sent a link to my phone so that I could order the replacement part through eBay. I subsequently ordered the part. Once it was delivered, I planned to schedule an appointment with the mechanic to have the replacement installed. While investigating the problem, I learned that certain Nissan Rogue models from multiple model years have been subject to safety recalls involving the Occupant Classification System (OCS) and airbag control units, including issues that can cause the airbag warning light to illuminate. Because of the seriousness of the safety issue I was experiencing, I contacted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at 888-327-4236. I spoke with a NHTSA representative and explained what had occurred. I provided my vehicle identification number (VIN). The representative informed me that, although there was a recall involving my vehicle's year and model, my particular VIN was not included in the recall. I was advised to contact Nissan directly and ask whether Nissan would provide a "goodwill" assistance offer: INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FO

I acquired a 2015 Nissan Rogue, but it seems the transmission has failed. Interestingly, the transmission is identified as a 2014 model within the 2015 vehicle. I reached out to the dealership for clarification on whether the transmission had been replaced, but I received no assistance. Discussions in a Nissan forum reveal that this issue is common among Nissan vehicles, yet there is no official recall. Numerous owners have expressed concerns regarding the transmission's reliability. Given that my vehicle has only 82,000 miles, it is unexpected for the transmission to malfunction at this stage.

The contact was informed that the repair was not covered under recall. The contact was advised to contact the manufacturer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact referenced an unknown recall; however, the VIN was not associated with a recall related to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. In addition, the contact was informed that the vehicle had a Salvage Title. The failure mileage was approximately 117,000.

The panoramic sunroof exploded while driving down the road. We almost crashed because it was so loud. It sounded like a gun shot. If the shade hadn’t been closed, we would have had glass rain down on our heads. I am contacting my insurance carrier today. There was no warning this would happen. The temperature at the time of incident was 52 degrees.
