Complete loss of motive power due to engine failure
On December 13, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-023 to investigate allegations of engine failures leading to loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue; MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; and MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50 vehicles. At that time, ODI had received 6 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) and multiple early warning reports, with consumers reporting engine knocking noises accompanied by a loss of engine power while driving. The investigation identified bearing failures in certain vehicles equipped with the subject 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. ODI also identified early warning reports describing thermal incidents that occurred immediately after the vehicle suffered a catastrophic engine failure. The failures were the result of a manufacturing defect in specific engine bearings (main, A-, C-, and L-link) or other engine components that may cause engine damage and potentially lead to engine failure. Engine failure can result in a loss of motive power event that can increase the risk of a crash. Engine failure might also result in a fire if internal components detach and impact the engine block creating a hole that allows engine oil to reach hot surfaces. In its April 2024, May 2024, and June 2025 responses to ODI’s information requests, Nissan provided 998 customer reports (including complaints, field reports, and legal claims) and 1,107 warranty claims related to the alleged defect. When combining ODI and manufacturer report data, there are 1,878 unique VINs that have experienced failures across all subject vehicles. In one of the early warning reports, ODI identified an incident involving a 2022 Infiniti QX55 that resulted in an engine fire following an alleged engine failure. The 2022 Infiniti QX55 was not included in the scope of this investigation but the vehicle model shares the same 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo engine. Based on the information included with the early warning report, the fire can be directly related to the alleged defect. A further review of ODI and manufacturer data, identified 12 allegations of engine compartment fires in subject vehicles; three were confirmed as directly related to the engine failure, and nine reports described an under-hood fire that occurred following a loss of power event. Additionally, ODI identified multiple reports describing an engine block crack or hole surrounded by oil residue following an engine failure. On June 27, 2025, Nissan submitted recall 25V-437 involving 443,899 MY 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue, MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50; and 2022 Infiniti QX55 vehicles. The recall remedy provides the dealer instructions to inspect the engine oil pan for the presence of specific metal debris. For customers with the 3-cylinder 1.5L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected during the inspection, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil, and reprogram the vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM). For customers with the 4-cylinder 2.0L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected, dealers will replace the engine oil. In the case where specific debris is detected and confirmed by Nissan Powertrain Call Center, dealers will be instructed to replace the engine. In addition, Nissan will extend the vehicle warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles for the recall subject vehicle population after the dealer performs the inspection. Nissan has implemented multiple corrective actions to address the identified manufacturing defects of certain engine block internal components. In view of the recall action (25V437) taken by Nissan, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. Back window on liftgate spontaneously shattered while the car was being driven. There was no rock, road debris or previous cracks in the window.

My 2023 Nissan Rogue SL FWD began exhibiting a jerking/kicking sensation from the transmission starting in approximately June 2026. Initially, the vehicle moved smoothly on level surfaces, but whenever I had to apply the accelerator pedal from a stop to start moving, a distinct kick or jerk would occur. I did not initially consider this a serious issue. In July 2026, an engine repair was performed on the vehicle. Following that repair, the transmission jerking issue worsened significantly. It now occurs every single time I start the vehicle moving from a stop and press the accelerator pedal - not intermittently, but consistently. Notably, the jerk does NOT occur while the vehicle is at a standstill (e.g., stopped at a red light) - it only occurs during the initial acceleration from a stop. This behavior is consistent with widely reported CVT shudder/jerk issues documented by other Nissan Rogue owners, in prior NHTSA complaints, and in class action litigation regarding Nissan’s CVT transmissions. I am concerned this represents a safety-related defect, as unexpected jerking during acceleration from a stop (e.g., pulling into traffic or merging) could increase the risk of a collision. I am a single mother of three children, and this vehicle is my family’s only means of transportation. I am reporting this issue now, before an accident occurs, because I am concerned about the safety risk of unexpected jerking during acceleration, especially when merging into traffic with my children in the car. I am filing this complaint to formally document the issue with NHTSA and am also pursuing repair of this defect under the vehicle’s factory warranty.

I was going to get lunch while at work. I opened the driver’s door and sat on the driver’s seat. I closed the driver’s door and my rear window exploded and shattered into thousands of pieces.

The oil pan plug is attached to plastic, it straps everything out. Leaving the car not drivable. Yes oil tech has mentioned it occurs to vehicles with plastic oil pans. (Nissan rogue 2020 and newer) Just the oil techs. No prior warning. Just a standard oil change.

The contact owns a 2023 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed variable compression ratio (VCR) actuator. The contact was informed that the VCR ratio actuator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that the repair was not covered under warranty or any unknown recall repair. The contact stated that the vehicle was used to transport her minor children. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 78,000.

I brought my car to my mechanic for a routine oil change and the drain plug on the oil pain failed. It is made with plastic and melted due to exposure to high engine heat rendering it useless and requiring the oil pan and drain to be replaced. When we called Nissan they said this is a known issue with several Nissan models and they have since had to retrofit a part to correct the malfunction. Had this plug failed while I was driving it could have caused massive engine failure. There were no indications there was anything wrong with my oil pan and this mechanic has done my oil changes on several cars for over 10 years. Despite the associate at the Nissan dealership we got the replacement part from acknowledging this is a known issue, no service campaign has been issued. I called Consumer affairs to discuss next steps in order to get this covered under warranty and was told to call back with my invoice information to submit for reimbursement. Upon calling back I was told they will not cover the repair as it was done at an independent mechanic which I was not informed of on my previous call. They assured me a supervisor would call me back by the end of the following day and I have not received a call from anyone. Failure for Nissan to take responsibility for a manufacturing defect is now leading to potential safety hazards and undue financial responsibility on its consumer's behalf since their employees are improperly trained. I will never purchase a Nissan again and can guarantee I will share this poor experience with everyone I know.

The contact owns a 2023 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the message “Power Low” was displayed, and the vehicle went into LIMP Mode. The vehicle was taken to a Walmart, and metal shavings were found in the oil. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, and the contact was informed that the recall repair was declined. The oil light had not been reset within 18,000 miles. The contact stated that the oil was changed in May 2026. The dealer determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 77,000.

The contact owns a 2023 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while the vehicle was at an independent mechanic for an oil change, the contact was informed of an engine oil leak, and the oil drain plug was replaced. The contact stated that while driving 65 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended, with significant white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe. No warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled into a gas station and parked the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact requested that the dealer perform the repair under NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V080000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the dealer declined to cover the repair under the recall due to insufficient oil change service records. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.

MIL ON WITH DTC P0181 STORED IN THE ECM IF YOU CONFIRM The customer states the MIL is ON but the vehicle does not have any drivability concerns or reduced power message in the combination meter, AND DTC P0181 for “Fuel Tank Temperature” is stored in either “Past” or “Current” in the ECM. ACTION Follow the SERVICE PROCEDURE in this bulletin to: 1. Replace the fuel temperature sensor. 2. Erase all the DTCs.

ACTION 1. Remove the supplied funnel from the rear of the vehicle or trunk. 2. Insert the funnel completely in the fuel filler tube and remove completely five (5) times. 3. Re-check the fuel filler tube lower seal with a smoke machine to determine visually if any leak is present. 4. If the fuel filler lower seal continues to leak, replace the fuel filler tube. STEERING WHEEL SWITCH BUTTONS INOPERATIVE, STICKING, OR NOT CLICKING WHEN PRESSED IF YOU CONFIRM The customer states that any of the steering wheel switch buttons are inoperative, sticking, or not clicking when pressed. ACTION Follow the SERVICE PROCEDURE to: 1. Remove the steering wheel assembly. 2. Replace the switch assembly on the steering wheel assembly. HINT: The switch assembly includes switches for both sides of the steering wheel. 3. Reinstall the steering wheel assembly.
