Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

The defect: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles equipped with a jackknife style ignition key. The jackknife key may collapse into a folded position while driving.
The risk: Driver contact with a key in the collapsed position could inadvertently shut off the vehicle while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the vehicle shuts off while driving, the air bags may not deploy in a crash as intended, increasing the risk of injury.
The remedy: Dealers will insert a spacer into the key slot of the jackknife key, free of charge. Interim notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed March 29, 2023. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 30, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22C5.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

Sep 12, 2019
1,228,830 units potentially affected
The defect: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
The risk: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
The remedy: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.

False Automatic Emergency Braking

Opened Sep 9, 2019

NHTSA received a defect petition (DP19-001) from the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) on March 21, 2019 alleging that the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system on Model Year (MY) 2017-2018 Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport vehicles was engaging in cases where there was no obstruction in the path of the vehicle. The CAS petition additionally alleges that, based on Nissan's actions, the manufacturer is aware of the issue due to issuing a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) launching two "Quality Actions," and initiating a "Customer Service Initiative" in relation to it. CAS contends that Nissan's actions do not represent an adequate long-term solution to the problem, as the action is only available during the basic coverage period of the warranty. CAS also argues that the alleged failures are an unreasonable risk to safety and views Nissan's communications as not acknowledging the potential safety issue involved, instead treating the alleged problem as a performance update. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) complaints received from consumers and identified a total of 129 unique subject vehicle reports (for all submission dates) alleging a false positive triggering of AEB. Of these complaints, three were identified that contained allegations of a collision resulting from the activation of the system, and all three indicating related injuries. In response to ODI's April 15, 2019 Information Request letter, Nissan provided data indicating that it has received 750 unique subject vehicle complaints relating to false positive activation of the AEB system. Of these complaints, 12 were identified that contained allegations of a collision resulting from the activation of the system. Four complaints contained allegations of injuries, three of which were the result of a collision. These complaints included duplicates of complaints that ODI received. The injury allegations were limited to soft tissue type injuries such as whiplash and bruising.Based on its review of the information identified to date, ODI has granted the petition and is opening this preliminary evaluation in order to evaluate the cause, scope and frequency of AEB false positive activations, as well as to evaluate the suitability of the manufacturer's campaign to address the concern or improve performance of the AEB system. The complaints cited can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following ODI identification numbers: 11230875, 11230481, 11230361, 11229400, 11229302, 11229294, 11228994, 11223074, 11222925, 11222644, 11220499, 11218713, 11218608, 11217157, 11210334, 11210256, 11210148, 11209127, 11209032, 11207333, 11205931, 11205717, 11205661, 11205172, 11205124, 11205027, 11204803, 11204349, 11204324, 11196805, 11196561, 11196466, 11196091, 11195938, 11195574, 11194380, 11193989, 11192761, 11192283, 11192063, 11190855, 11190840, 11189976, 11187374, 11186903, 11185890, 11185883, 11185132, 11183406, 11180813, 11174713, 11173666, 11173302, 11172299, 11171331, 11170989, 11165434, 11164646, 11162898, 11162502, 11162396, 11161413, 11161230, 11155985, 11155209, 11155181, 11154181, 11153607, 11153334, 11151373, 11151028, 11142595, 11142557, 11142386, 11141775, 11141433, 11141387, 11141347, 11140604, 11139711, 11139226, 11133402, 11132376, 11130998, 11130662, 11129949, 11128704, 11124099, 11123564, 11123353, 11123321, 11122783, 11119475, 11119300, 11118604, 11115088, 11113479, 11113371, 11112371, 11111659, 11111057, 11110919, 11110689, 11104075, 11103844, 11103437, 11102715, 11102333, 11100117, 11099313, 11091006, 11089960, 11089798, 11089533, 11088815, 11088718, 11081072, 11079453, 11073644, 11072718, 11065505, 11061598, 11057739, 11056061, 11055766, 11048349, 11035301, 11033225, and 10972343.

The fuel-filler door release/latch on my 2019 Nissan Rogue repeatedly fails to unlock. This problem has occurred intermittently for more than one year. When I stop to refuel, I sometimes have to press the fuel-door release button more than 30 times before the latch finally releases. There are no warning lights or messages before the failure. This could leave me stranded and unable to refuel the vehicle, including during an emergency or in an unsafe location. The vehicle is stationary when the failure occurs. There was no crash, fire, injury, or police report. The issue has not yet been confirmed by a Nissan dealer. The vehicle and failed component are available for inspection upon request.

While the vehicle was being driven on a busy city street, it suddenly lost the ability to accelerate. The vehicle displayed multiple warning messages, including “Warning Low Oil Pressure — Stop Vehicle” and a collision warning. The accelerator no longer operated the vehicle normally. After the vehicle was shut off, it would not restart. The vehicle was taken to a Nissan dealership. The dealership initially could not communicate with the vehicle’s CAN system. After approximately three days of diagnosis, the dealer determined that there was a short to ground in the vehicle’s main wiring harness. There was no accident or other known event that caused the failure. The vehicle was operating normally before the incident. I am particularly concerned because the failure occurred while the vehicle was being driven and resulted in a sudden loss of acceleration. This created a potentially dangerous loss of propulsion. I am asking NHTSA to record and review this incident as a potential safety-related defect involving premature failure of the main wiring harness and the resulting loss of vehicle propulsion and CAN communication. I do not know whether this is an isolated failure or a broader design/manufacturing problem. I am reporting it so that NHTSA can determine whether similar complaints exist involving this vehicle, wiring harness, or failure mode. Note-Main harness replacement cost was approximately $4,450. In my opinion the work was diagnosed incompletely and the fauly could have been traced to individual wire (s) or electronic module. Photos show no obvious burning.

My car has 63k miles and I am told I need a transmission. This is a largely documented issue regarding defective cvt transmission on many many Nissan vehicles. Why is there no recall? Why do as consumers have to file a lawsuit and wait to be reimbursed. Is this not a safety issue? To be driving and have the car just stop?? Please issue a recall on these transmissions!

The contact's son owned a 2019 Nissan Rogue. While the owner was driving and depressing the brake pedal while stopped at a red light with a friend seated in the front passenger seat, a drunk driver crashed into the rear of the vehicle. The driver’s and passenger’s seat backs reclined backwards due to the impact of the crash. The contact stated that the air bags had not deployed. The contact stated that the driver’s and passenger’s side frontal air bags should have deployed. The passenger sustained injuries to the back and later received medical assistance, underwent a CT scan, and was awaiting a diagnosis. A Police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the Twin Creek Tow lot. The vehicle was deemed a total loss by the insurance company. The approximate failure mileage was 149,000.

The Vehicle has developed this problem: the passenger-side door will not lock or unlock using either the key fob or the interior power-lock switch and has to be operated manually. Because the same failure has occurred on two consecutive model years, I am concerned this may be a recurring door-lock actuator defect rather than normal wear. I have a case number open with the Nissan Consumer Affairs. The case number is XXX. I also own a 2018 Nissan Rogue SV; the VIN number is [XXX], with the same exact problem. On XXX I was traveling with my [XXX] mother who has 2 plates to her hips from a fx. We had stopped at a rest area. I went to get her out of the front passenger side and the door would not open from outside or inside. The other doors were fine. She is not able to climb over the front console so I called the police. They were able to get her over the front seat to the back. Very upsetting for this to happen. I went online to see what the issue could be and saw there is a class action suit against Nissan on the door locks(actuator) as Nissan is refusing to do a recall. I went to my Nissan dealer to do repairs and sure enough it was the actuator. Cost of $940.95. The dealer could have cared less of what happened. This is a safety issue. What if all my locks did not open and she was stuck in the car since the temps were 96 that day.Receipt for repairs are attached.
