Inner Tie Rod Failures
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received one Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) and Early Warning Reporting (EWR) field report data on 2021 Nissan Rogue vehicles with allegations of inner tie rod failures resulting in a loss of steering control. The failures have been reported to occur on either driver or passenger side of the vehicle. In some cases, the vehicle required towing from the failure location for repair service. ODI is opening this investigation to further assess the scope, frequency, root cause, and potential safety-related consequences of the alleged defect leading to loss of steering control on 2021 Nissan Rogue. Complete loss of motive power due to engine failure
On December 13, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-023 to investigate allegations of engine failures leading to loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue; MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; and MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50 vehicles. At that time, ODI had received 6 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) and multiple early warning reports, with consumers reporting engine knocking noises accompanied by a loss of engine power while driving. The investigation identified bearing failures in certain vehicles equipped with the subject 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. ODI also identified early warning reports describing thermal incidents that occurred immediately after the vehicle suffered a catastrophic engine failure. The failures were the result of a manufacturing defect in specific engine bearings (main, A-, C-, and L-link) or other engine components that may cause engine damage and potentially lead to engine failure. Engine failure can result in a loss of motive power event that can increase the risk of a crash. Engine failure might also result in a fire if internal components detach and impact the engine block creating a hole that allows engine oil to reach hot surfaces. In its April 2024, May 2024, and June 2025 responses to ODI’s information requests, Nissan provided 998 customer reports (including complaints, field reports, and legal claims) and 1,107 warranty claims related to the alleged defect. When combining ODI and manufacturer report data, there are 1,878 unique VINs that have experienced failures across all subject vehicles. In one of the early warning reports, ODI identified an incident involving a 2022 Infiniti QX55 that resulted in an engine fire following an alleged engine failure. The 2022 Infiniti QX55 was not included in the scope of this investigation but the vehicle model shares the same 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo engine. Based on the information included with the early warning report, the fire can be directly related to the alleged defect. A further review of ODI and manufacturer data, identified 12 allegations of engine compartment fires in subject vehicles; three were confirmed as directly related to the engine failure, and nine reports described an under-hood fire that occurred following a loss of power event. Additionally, ODI identified multiple reports describing an engine block crack or hole surrounded by oil residue following an engine failure. On June 27, 2025, Nissan submitted recall 25V-437 involving 443,899 MY 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue, MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50; and 2022 Infiniti QX55 vehicles. The recall remedy provides the dealer instructions to inspect the engine oil pan for the presence of specific metal debris. For customers with the 3-cylinder 1.5L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected during the inspection, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil, and reprogram the vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM). For customers with the 4-cylinder 2.0L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected, dealers will replace the engine oil. In the case where specific debris is detected and confirmed by Nissan Powertrain Call Center, dealers will be instructed to replace the engine. In addition, Nissan will extend the vehicle warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles for the recall subject vehicle population after the dealer performs the inspection. Nissan has implemented multiple corrective actions to address the identified manufacturing defects of certain engine block internal components. In view of the recall action (25V437) taken by Nissan, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. 2021 Nissan Rogue — VIN [XXX]. The electric power steering warning light illuminated while driving. The steering wheel became extremely stiff and difficult to turn, causing a significant increase in steering effort. This appears to be a sudden loss of power steering assist. I was driving on I25 south towards Albuquerque. I was changing lanes and another vehicle slammed into me causing me to crash into the guard rail. I was going 75 miles per hour at the time and my air bags did not deploy and my vehicle is very likely totaled. Due to airbags not deploying my head hit the steering wheel and window many times. The vehicle is available for inspection if requested.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The fuel/engine vapor ventilation system in the driver-side engine bay is leaking raw fuel fumes into the fresh air intake. Yes, the vehicle and all components are available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Inhaling continuous raw gasoline fumes while driving and idling causes physical distress, including severe headaches, burning eyes, and dizziness, creating a driving hazard. The unaddressed raw fuel leak under the hood also poses an elevated fire safety risk. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center?Pinnacle Nissan previously confirmed a fuel leak and replaced the fuel tank and lock ring assembly. ABC Nissan inspected the vehicle for over a week, confirmed testing was conducted, but reported they were unable to pinpoint the engine bay leak source. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Inspected by Pinnacle Nissan and ABC Nissan service departments under active Nissan Consumer Affairs Case #56847990. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lamps or dashboard messages appeared. The symptom is a persistent raw gasoline smell coming through the front dashboard HVAC vents while driving and idling, which began prior to any repairs and continues to persist on this Certified Pre-Owned vehicle.

The left headliner above the small rear window is wet/stained after heavy rain or a car wash. I have had this issue previously with the front left headliner and the clips were replaced. The same issue is occurring with the rear left headliner now. The risk of mold exposure, water damage, etc. is high.

I was driving my 2021 Nissan Rogue on the highway, returning from the airport after picking up a friend, when the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle began jerking on acceleration. The vehicle lost power and would only move very slowly, leaving me traveling well below highway speed in active traffic. This created an extremely dangerous situation, as surrounding vehicles were approaching at full highway speed while my vehicle could not accelerate or maintain a safe speed. The vehicle also appeared to be running hot. I did not feel safe continuing to drive the vehicle, so I stopped driving it and had it taken to Crest Nissan of Frisco (Frisco, TX) for diagnosis. The dealership retrieved diagnostic trouble codes P1217 (engine overheat) and P0300 (random/multiple cylinder misfire). Upon inspection, they found low coolant, pressure-tested the cooling system, and confirmed that coolant is entering multiple cylinders, causing the misfire and overheating. The dealership states the engine cannot be repaired and the long block engine assembly must be replaced, at a quoted cost of $6,955.49. The vehicle is barely outside the manufacturer's warranty by time and mileage. There was no warning prior to this failure, and the vehicle has been properly maintained. This is an internal engine failure (coolant intrusion into the cylinders), not a maintenance-related issue. I am aware of other 2021 Nissan Rogue owners reporting the same failure — coolant entering the cylinders/mixing with oil, misfires, overheating, and dealers requiring full engine replacement shortly after warranty expiration. This defect presents a serious safety hazard: sudden loss of power and inability to accelerate in highway traffic creates a significant risk of a rear-end collision.

I have two major safety concerns for my 2021 Nissan Rogue. 1) FAILED REAR DOOR ACTUATORS ON BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE OF VEHICLE: I own a 2021 Nissan Rogue with approximately 68,000 miles. The rear driver AND passenger side door lock actuator failed, causing the rear doors to no longer lock or unlock electronically using either the key fob or the interior power door lock switch. The door must now be operated manually from the inside, no one can freely open the doors from the outside. I have to crawl in the backseat to open the doors. This creates a safety concern because, in an emergency, a rear passenger may not be able to quickly exit the vehicle if the door cannot be unlocked electronically. This failure affects a rear passenger door and could delay a child's or other passenger's ability to exit the vehicle quickly in an emergency if the electronic lock cannot be operated. It also creates a vehicle security concern because the door does not lock properly. I have found multiple reports from other 2021 Nissan Rogue owners describing the same rear door lock actuator failure at similar mileage. This appears to be more than an isolated incident. The vehicle has not been involved in an accident, and the failure occurred during normal use. 2) FAILED EGR VALVE: The EGR cooler has failed internally and is allowing engine coolant into the combustion chambers. The vehicle experienced a sudden engine malfunction related to an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system failure. The diagnostic trouble code was P0401 –and was diagnosed with an EGR cooler failure causing coolant to leak into the combustion chambers. While driving, the vehicle displayed “Engine Malfunction-Power Reduced-Service Now.” The car went into reduced power mode, significantly limiting acceleration and normal vehicle operation, creating dangerous driving conditions. A sudden reduction in engine power on a highway or in traffic presents a significant safety hazard. Please investigate a recall.

ACTION 1. Remove the supplied funnel from the rear of the vehicle or trunk. 2. Insert the funnel completely in the fuel filler tube and remove completely five (5) times. 3. Re-check the fuel filler tube lower seal with a smoke machine to determine visually if any leak is present. 4. If the fuel filler lower seal continues to leak, replace the fuel filler tube.
