What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2021 Nissan Rogue, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
I have two major safety concerns for my 2021 Nissan Rogue. 1) FAILED REAR DOOR ACTUATORS ON BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE OF VEHICLE: I own a 2021 Nissan Rogue with approximately 68,000 miles. The rear driver AND passenger side door lock actuator failed, causing the rear doors to no longer lock or unlock electronically using either the key fob or the interior power door lock switch. The door must now be operated manually from the inside, no one can freely open the doors from the outside. I have to crawl in the backseat to open the doors. This creates a safety concern because, in an emergency, a rear passenger may not be able to quickly exit the vehicle if the door cannot be unlocked electronically. This failure affects a rear passenger door and could delay a child's or other passenger's ability to exit the vehicle quickly in an emergency if the electronic lock cannot be operated. It also creates a vehicle security concern because the door does not lock properly. I have found multiple reports from other 2021 Nissan Rogue owners describing the same rear door lock actuator failure at similar mileage. This appears to be more than an isolated incident. The vehicle has not been involved in an accident, and the failure occurred during normal use. 2) FAILED EGR VALVE: The EGR cooler has failed internally and is allowing engine coolant into the combustion chambers. The vehicle experienced a sudden engine malfunction related to an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system failure. The diagnostic trouble code was P0401 –and was diagnosed with an EGR cooler failure causing coolant to leak into the combustion chambers. While driving, the vehicle displayed “Engine Malfunction-Power Reduced-Service Now.” The car went into reduced power mode, significantly limiting acceleration and normal vehicle operation, creating dangerous driving conditions. A sudden reduction in engine power on a highway or in traffic presents a significant safety hazard. Please investigate a recall.
My Nissan Rogue Platinum 2021 not want to start I call a AAA they check the batery but the batery was new 3 months I have to call a tow truck and bring it to Nissan dealer on university dr in hunstville Alabama they keep the car for 3 days the call me and said that was the starter and also that the coolant get in to the motor that the car need a new motor that cost 9,000 dollars plus the starter 1442 I asking how is possible I bring the car for service all a time and not body touch the car just the dealership service department im sure this problem is a manufacturer problem because we pay 65000 thousands for this car we pay 781.11 at months we still owe 18600 and this motor is gone that is impossible we need help we are seniors retired and disability we don't have almost 11,000 thousands dollars for fix something that we don't do can someone help in this situation?
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
Hi, smell a very strong gas smell inside the cabin. And it doesn't matter if the fuel tank is full are nearly empty.
I was driving my 2021 Nissan Rogue on the highway, returning from the airport after picking up a friend, when the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle began jerking on acceleration. The vehicle lost power and would only move very slowly, leaving me traveling well below highway speed in active traffic. This created an extremely dangerous situation, as surrounding vehicles were approaching at full highway speed while my vehicle could not accelerate or maintain a safe speed. The vehicle also appeared to be running hot. I did not feel safe continuing to drive the vehicle, so I stopped driving it and had it taken to Crest Nissan of Frisco (Frisco, TX) for diagnosis. The dealership retrieved diagnostic trouble codes P1217 (engine overheat) and P0300 (random/multiple cylinder misfire). Upon inspection, they found low coolant, pressure-tested the cooling system, and confirmed that coolant is entering multiple cylinders, causing the misfire and overheating. The dealership states the engine cannot be repaired and the long block engine assembly must be replaced, at a quoted cost of $6,955.49. The vehicle is barely outside the manufacturer's warranty by time and mileage. There was no warning prior to this failure, and the vehicle has been properly maintained. This is an internal engine failure (coolant intrusion into the cylinders), not a maintenance-related issue. I am aware of other 2021 Nissan Rogue owners reporting the same failure — coolant entering the cylinders/mixing with oil, misfires, overheating, and dealers requiring full engine replacement shortly after warranty expiration. This defect presents a serious safety hazard: sudden loss of power and inability to accelerate in highway traffic creates a significant risk of a rear-end collision.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.

While driving car will not let me accelerate and it hesitates while driving kind of a jerking if trying to accelerate. The AC blows hot air the check engine light is on I only had the car for two months purchased from dealership
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The fuel/engine vapor ventilation system in the driver-side engine bay is leaking raw fuel fumes into the fresh air intake. Yes, the vehicle and all components are available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Inhaling continuous raw gasoline fumes while driving and idling causes physical distress, including severe headaches, burning eyes, and dizziness, creating a driving hazard. The unaddressed raw fuel leak under the hood also poses an elevated fire safety risk. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center?Pinnacle Nissan previously confirmed a fuel leak and replaced the fuel tank and lock ring assembly. ABC Nissan inspected the vehicle for over a week, confirmed testing was conducted, but reported they were unable to pinpoint the engine bay leak source. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Inspected by Pinnacle Nissan and ABC Nissan service departments under active Nissan Consumer Affairs Case #56847990. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lamps or dashboard messages appeared. The symptom is a persistent raw gasoline smell coming through the front dashboard HVAC vents while driving and idling, which began prior to any repairs and continues to persist on this Certified Pre-Owned vehicle.
Hi, smell a very strong gas smell inside the cabin. And it doesn't matter if the fuel tank is full are nearly empty.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.

The vehicle was puttering and smoking from the exhaust. At first the mechanic thought it was a head gasket, but with further investigation it was the coolant/exhaust. The vehicle stalled out multiple times, twice while driving and once in a grocery store parking lot.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
The left headliner above the small rear window is wet/stained after heavy rain or a car wash. I have had this issue previously with the front left headliner and the clips were replaced. The same issue is occurring with the rear left headliner now. The risk of mold exposure, water damage, etc. is high.

Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
As I am driving on the freeway my drivers assistance is taking control of my steering and steering me either sharp to the left or right and then I can’t move the steering wheel for about 10 seconds at a time
The contact owns a 2021 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated while her husband was driving 75 MPH in the far-left lane, with the contact in the front passenger's seat, the vehicle completely lost power steering functionality in heavy traffic. Both the contact and her husband were significantly frightened. The contact's husband was able to drive to the right lane and pulled over to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was determined that the entire power steering assembly needed to be re placed. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 79,000
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
I have been dealing with a loud grinding noise at low speeds when braking since 3 months after purchase. We have been to the dealership multiple times over the issue. The dealership can hear the noise but are unable to fix the problem. I fear it’s a safety issue and may cause brake failure as it’s super loud especially on steep hills. Rotors have been resurfaced and brakes replaced.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Answer: The fuel pump assembly failed. The component is still in the vehicle and is available for inspection upon request. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Answer: The engine stalls or loses power unexpectedly while driving at highway speeds. This creates a high risk of a rear-end collision, as the vehicle becomes a stationary or slow-moving hazard in active traffic without warning. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Answer: I have experienced the failure repeatedly. Although I contacted a Nissan dealer, they stated they could not verify or perform the repair because my VIN is not currently listed in the R21B8 recall database, despite the vehicle exhibiting the exact symptoms described in that campaign. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Answer: No, it has not been officially inspected by the manufacturer yet because they claim the vehicle is not part of the current recall population. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Answer: The symptoms include engine hesitation during acceleration, difficulty starting, and sudden stalling. These symptoms first appeared at approximately [ No warning lights or "Check Engine" messages appeared prior to the engine stalling.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
I was driving on I25 south towards Albuquerque. I was changing lanes and another vehicle slammed into me causing me to crash into the guard rail. I was going 75 miles per hour at the time and my air bags did not deploy and my vehicle is very likely totaled. Due to airbags not deploying my head hit the steering wheel and window many times. The vehicle is available for inspection if requested.
The contact owns a 2021 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated while driving at 20 MPH, a another vehicle collied with the right passenger side. The contact stated that no air bags were deployed in his vehicle. The contact stated sustained injuries brushing to the lower stomach, her right breast and within her chest no visible brushing, however she does suffer from on going chest pains . Medical attention was required as she went ER to be checked out via her husband. The contact stated that a police report was filed, however the police report was not avaiable at this time of complaint. The vehicle was drivable from the scene. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 96,000.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2021 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle's sunroof glass panel had suddenly shuddered outwards after a loud bang was heard. The local dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to an independent service center, where it remains for further repairs via the insurance provider. In addition, the contact stated that the sudden event caused severe mental distress; however, medical attention was not sought. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 18,000.
When activating the right turn signal the windshield washers and wipers will turn on. Washers, wipers, and the turn signal all turn off when the turn signal is deactivated. This can cause some unexpected visibility issues while turning. Also, when turning the headlights from "Auto" to the "Off" position the windshield wipers will turn on. The wipers will stay on until you Switch back to "Auto". These problems are repeatable. I plan to contact the Nissan Dealer to see how much a multifunction switch replacement would cost.
Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
2021 Nissan Rogue — VIN [XXX]. The electric power steering warning light illuminated while driving. The steering wheel became extremely stiff and difficult to turn, causing a significant increase in steering effort. This appears to be a sudden loss of power steering assist. I am concerned about loss of steering control and believe this may be a safety defect. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I was backing out of a parking garage and I had the steering wheel turned while I was reversing so I could exit the lot. I heard a pop and put the car in drive to move forward and the car would not move. Once I put the car in park and exited the vehicle I could see that the left tire was no longer attached to the steering column and that the tire rod had snapped dislodging the front left tire from the system.

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
There is play in the seat. Unnerving that the seat moves without any manual intervention or undue force. The movement occurs u see braking and/or acceleration. When reported to Nissan dealer, was informed that it was not covered under standard or extended warranty plans. 2021 year model with 27800 miles, noticed this movement in our previous 2019 model as well.
The driver’s seat heating element appears to have failed and caused the seat material to burn. The damaged seat and its components are still in my possession and available for inspection upon request. The malfunction caused the seat to catch fire while the vehicle was in use, creating a risk of burns, smoke inhalation, and a potential full vehicle fire. This posed a significant danger to my safety and the safety of any passengers. Not yet. The issue has not been reproduced, but the physical damage clearly indicates a failure of the heating element. I am planning to have it evaluated by a dealer or an independent service center. Not yet. No inspection has been done so far by Nissan, law enforcement, or insurance, but I intend to contact my insurance provider and the dealership for official inspection and documentation. There were no warning lights, messages, or unusual symptoms before the failure occurred. The fire started suddenly while the seat heater was in use.

Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
I was told at 58,000 miles that the front control arms where cracking and need to be replaced. I requested Goodwill assistance and was denied by NMAC. I searched this problem and found that Nissans have a history of recalls and complaints of control arms needing early replacement due to poor quality parts.
1. right front lower control arm broke yes available for inspection 2. caused my vehicle to pulled to the right and could not steer straight and caused collision into parked car. 3. no not yet 4. no not yet 5. no

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
I purchased this vehicle new and started having issues with it at 3,000 miles. The screen freezes or just stops working, the HVAC system blows out 2 totally different temps even though it's "Synced" on the same temp. My blind spot warning is malfunctioning, the rear camera has stopped working and the rear tailgate fills with water, I was told I would need a whole new tailgate to fix that, I supposedly had the retractors replaced in my seatbelts and those still do not retract. The car has slammed on the brakes on the highway for no reason causing a burn on my neck, supposedly that recall was performed but I dont think it was. I have also caught Gandrud Nissan in an act of fraud once already regarding my vehicle being there for an entire week and them trying to say it was never there, and I believe they never performed these recalls or fixes, otherwise my seatbelts should work and my cameras would be working. This vehicle has given me nothing but issues since I bought it. I have video and paperwork to back this all up. When I asked to speak with the owner of Gandrud Nissan who has done all the work on my vehicle while under warranty, he refuses to call me back. I would like an investigation done to see if these parts have been replaced and the recall work was actually performed, I do not want Nissan notified until after another party has checked to see if the work was done.
Car and driver reported early builds pre January 28th 2021 from the Japan plant recorded a 2 star safety rating on the passenger small overlap test. Nissan updated retrofitted the passenger airbag module software and seatbelt and was supposed to start a campaign to notify owners to have this done and we were never notified and Nissan is no help when you call and provide VIN. They only tell me no recalls on this VIN. Please note the assembly line builds were provided the retrofit after Jan28th 2021 in Japan builds and Smyrna Tenn builds were already updated before the first build came off the line. My wife's truck and this VIN qualifies with a build date of November 2020 from Japan's factory. Very concerned of the safety of any passenger in our truck and Nissan is dragging their feet and not taking this seriously I feel due to expense. Not sure how many are affected but they need a severe push to remedy this issue. Please help us and God bless you for having this forum. We purchased this Feb 2021 and its been long enough for Nissan to do the right thing for public safety for our family. Thank you. 1. Rattling noise. Front driver door rattle around the window switch area (happens in some temperature like early morning, late night time, and driving on rough road). Center dash near the ac vent and hazard light area (happens driving on rough road at night time when the car cools down). Front passenger door rattles happen driving on all rough road. I think I hear something from the sun roof too or maybe it’s coming from the passenger side. 2. Passenger door sound like there is something loose around the mirror area. Just Park the car. You can hear it outside at night time when you close the door with normal force. 3. Driver side under the kick panel there is a plastic pieces not putting together right. It looks like it falling apart. 4.Driver door there is a little hole on the inside leather. I notice it when the car is like 2 days old when I was washing the car. 5. On the driver side fender is making noise when you push on it when the car is parked and at lower temperature time. 6. The engine oil thing keeps showing up. Sometime it says service due now or sometime it says service due soon. (First time it happened at 151 miles into this new car. Second time around 300 miles then around 500 miles then 1264 miles into the car then 1387 miles then 1779 miles then 2225 miles then 2477 miles). 7. The AC sync button light does not turn off when tri-zone ac is not in sync. 8. The AC light is not on when on auto mode. 9. The new Nissan digital dashboard at night time light does not dime right. there is a software issue. 10. propilot assist will pull the car to the left if there is a car next to my left. If there is a car on my right then it will pull me to the right.
