NHTSA inquiries naming this vehicle. An investigation is not a finding of a defect.
False Automatic Emergency Braking
NHTSA received a defect petition (DP19-001) from the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) on March 21, 2019 alleging that the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system on Model Year (MY) 2017-2018 Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport vehicles was engaging in cases where there was no obstruction in the path of the vehicle. The CAS petition additionally alleges that, based on Nissan's actions, the manufacturer is aware of the issue due to issuing a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) launching two "Quality Actions," and initiating a "Customer Service Initiative" in relation to it. CAS contends that Nissan's actions do not represent an adequate long-term solution to the problem, as the action is only available during the basic coverage period of the warranty. CAS also argues that the alleged failures are an unreasonable risk to safety and views Nissan's communications as not acknowledging the potential safety issue involved, instead treating the alleged problem as a performance update. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) complaints received from consumers and identified a total of 129 unique subject vehicle reports (for all submission dates) alleging a false positive triggering of AEB. Of these complaints, three were identified that contained allegations of a collision resulting from the activation of the system, and all three indicating related injuries. In response to ODI's April 15, 2019 Information Request letter, Nissan provided data indicating that it has received 750 unique subject vehicle complaints relating to false positive activation of the AEB system. Of these complaints, 12 were identified that contained allegations of a collision resulting from the activation of the system. Four complaints contained allegations of injuries, three of which were the result of a collision. These complaints included duplicates of complaints that ODI received. The injury allegations were limited to soft tissue type injuries such as whiplash and bruising.Based on its review of the information identified to date, ODI has granted the petition and is opening this preliminary evaluation in order to evaluate the cause, scope and frequency of AEB false positive activations, as well as to evaluate the suitability of the manufacturer's campaign to address the concern or improve performance of the AEB system. Component/System: The fire department determined the cause of the fire to be accidental due to an electrical malfunction within the vehicle. The most extensive damage was located in the engine compartment, though damage spread to the passenger compartment as well. The vehicle is available on request. The vehicle caught fire while parked on a street. No injuries or displacements occured. However, the vehicle became "well involved" with fire, creating an active emergency that required emergent fire department response and suppression. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Since the vehicle receive so much damage, it would only be the emergency response and origin determination by Lubbock Fire Rescue. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The vehicle was inspected on-scene by Lubbock Fire Rescue (Unit E7). The fire department noted no signs of vandalism or tampering, concluding the cause was accidental. The police was also on the scene as well. Were there any warning messages? The owner stated they had driven the vehicle around 20:30 (8:30 PM) the previous evening and it had been parked since. The fire did not break out until approximately 05:13 AM the following morning. There wasn’t any warning lamps or unusual symptoms l present during or prior to that final drive. Summary: On May 28, 2026 the 2018 Nissan Rogue internally combusted. Subsequent inspection of the vehicle revealed fire damage in both the passenger compartment and the engine compartment, with the most severe and extensive damage concentrated in the engine bay. Fire officials found no evidence of tampering or vandalism. Based on the burn patterns and origin point, Lubbock Fire Rescue determined the cause of the fire to be accident al, resulting from an internal electrical malfunction within the vehicle.
