2023 Nissan Rogue Engine Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the engine system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Engine reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I was driving at soscol Ave Napa 94558 CA when engine warning came out and vehicle power reduced to less than 40MPH on 55mph road. Component failure was engine. My safety and others may or may not be at risk but the road was 55mph and the vehicle went on LIMP mode. Problems were raised to Napa Nissan Dealership @1:50pm on 09/21/2026 however similar problems are reported with the same vehicle nationwide. Vehicle still in dealership possession and conducting their own inspection as of this writing. Warning lights and messages appears while driving around 6:30AM Napa California Engine malfunction and I think it went to limp mode it’s having a hard time going 30-40MPH. I was on the way to work when it happened this morning around 6:30am @ 50,394 mls the engine malfunction error went off, and the engine sounds were different than usual and power was reduced. Also the driver seats feels not sturdy and squeaking a lot when driving. I have video documenting it and how it’s sounds like.

While on the freeway my 2023 Nissan Rogue all of a sudden would not accelerate. I was able slowly get it to accelerate from 3 mph to 25 mph, I drove it a mile, turned it off and when I turned it back on, it wouldn't start and there was white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. I towed my car to the Nissan dealership, they kept it for 40 days and told me they had to replace the engine. A month after I got it back, it stopped accelerating again on the freeway. A year later the transmission failed and had to be replaced.

While driving on a major public highway, the vehicle suffered a sudden, catastrophic loss of motive propulsion, dropping immediately into a dangerous transmission limp mode. The dashboard displayed a critical error message stating 'Service CVT Power Reduced' alongside a Check Engine Light. The vehicle became an immediate stationary traffic hazard in a live highway lane, completely unable to accelerate or move safely out of the way of oncoming high-speed traffic. The hazard was severe enough to require an emergency safety response from the Gwinnett County Police Department (Case #PD262540884) to secure the scene and protect the disabled vehicle until a flatbed tow truck could remove it. A subsequent diagnostic scan by a certified corporate dealer (Premier Nissan) confirmed complete internal transaxle failure, throwing diagnostic trouble codes P0741-00 (Torque Converter), P0746-00, and P187E-09.

I own a 2023 Nissan Rogue Platinum, VIN [XXX], purchased XXX. Nissan’s VIN-specific records show an engine-bearing campaign was OPEN on the sale date. The vehicle was sold as Nissan Certified Pre-Owned, and the XXX CPO inspection paperwork marked the open-campaign requirement as PASS, creating a conflict with the VIN-specific campaign history. On XXX Nissan Consumer Affairs Case XXX confirmed in writing that this VIN is included in KR ENGINE BEARING (RC-XXX) and directed me to schedule free campaign repairs. The underlying engine-bearing safety issue can lead to engine damage or failure and increase the risk of a crash. I am reporting this so NHTSA has a record that this VIN had an open engine-bearing campaign at the time of sale, despite the CPO campaign item being marked PASS, and because I received conflicting campaign-status information concerning this VIN. I request confirmation through the appropriate recall process that all required safety-recall/campaign inspection and repair work for this VIN is completed and accurately reflected in the manufacturer’s records. September 15, 2026. Driving and car engine was sluggish and car wouldn't move. Red oil light came on. Managed to get the car to a parking spot and let the car cool off. Checked the oil and it was low, so put more oil in. Will follow up with mechanic but can't understand why I've not gotten a recall notice when there have been MANY of these same complaints!! Now I am afraid to drive the car! 2023 Nissan Rogue SV.

On XXX, my 2023 Nissan Rogue suffered a total structural failure of the factory plastic engine oil pan. During a routine maintenance check, the internal pressed-in brass threaded insert completely separated from the composite plastic casing and began spinning freely. This design failure made it impossible to safely remove, secure, or torque the oil drain plug to factory specifications. Nissan has documented this exact engineering defect in Technical Service Bulletin TSB NTB22-003. The failure occurs under normal operating force due to an inadequate layer of composite material holding the metal insert in place. The repair facility ([XXX]) officially certified on the repair invoice that this failure was caused entirely by a "factory design flaw," completely ruling out technician error or external road damage. I was forced to pay $778.25 out of pocket to replace the failed factory assembly to ensure the vehicle was safe to operate. I am filing this complaint regarding my 2023 Nissan Rogue due to a serious engine malfunction and concerns that a safety recall may not have been properly completed. My vehicle developed an “Engine Malfunction” warning with reduced power and became unsafe and undrivable. The vehicle had to be towed to a repair facility. An independent diagnostic performed afterward indicated a possible throttle body issue. Prior to this incident, I took the vehicle to a Nissan dealership because of an applicable recall. The dealership told me that the recall had been repaired. However, when I checked the vehicle’s recall status afterward, the recall still appeared as unrepaired/incomplete. I also was not provided adequate documentation explaining exactly what was inspected, what was repaired, or how the dealership determined that the recall was successfully completed. I am concerned that the recall-related defect may not have been properly addressed and that this could have contributed to the engine malfunction and sudden loss of power. I am requesting that NHTSA review this matter and determine whether there are other complaints involving this recall, the 2023 Nissan Rogue, loss of power/engine malfunction, or throttle-body-related problems, and whether the recall remedy is being properly performed. I can provide repair records, diagnostic information, photographs, recall information, and documentation from the Nissan dealership if needed.

While driving at speed with a newborn infant in the vehicle, my 2023 Nissan Rogue suffered a sudden and catastrophic engine failure related to NHTSA Recall 26V080000. The vehicle suddenly produced a heavy burning smell, thick white smoke, and the engine completely seized and died while actively in motion. This resulted in an immediate, terrifying loss of motive power on a live roadway, trapping myself and my infant in a hazardous situation. The violent, sudden engine seizure also delivered a terminal mechanical shock that destroyed the transmission. Nissan is currently refusing 100% accountability, trying to charge me a 30% split for the transmission damage directly caused by this life-threatening defect.

I am filing this complaint regarding Nissan's handling of an open safety recall involving my vehicle and the subsequent engine failure. Nissan issued Recall 26V080 concerning an engine-related defect that can cause engine oil breakdown, bearing damage/seizure, engine damage, and loss of motive power. My vehicle developed the red oil warning light, check-engine light, and reduced engine power before the engine failed. The vehicle also had dark oil and sludge in the engine. The dealership is now attributing the engine failure to alleged lack of maintenance and has denied the engine warranty claim. This is disputed. The vehicle received oil changes at an independent repair facility, and I provided Nissan with receipts documenting the maintenance. The dealership originally relied on the absence of Carfax entries to claim that the oil changes had not occurred. The dealership inspected the vehicle and submitted photographs and a physical sludge sample to Nissan's warranty department. I was told that Nissan's warranty department responded approximately three days later. No Nissan warranty technician or field representative physically inspected my vehicle before the determination was made. Nissan Consumer Affairs told me that the dealership's warranty department made the determination and that they would not disclose what information was submitted or what the sludge sample established. I dispute the conclusion that maintenance caused the engine failure. The presence of sludge does not, by itself, establish what caused the sludge. Nissan's own recall documentation identifies oil breakdown as part of the defect's failure mechanism. I have not been provided with evidence explaining how Nissan distinguished maintenance-related oil degradation from the recalled defect or how it ruled out the recalled defect as a cause or contributing factor. I was also told that the recall cannot be performed because my engine is no longer operational and that I would have to obtain another

On 6/22/2026, my vehicle was towed due to loss of power, excessive oil consumption, and excessive vibration, and unable to start. These issues have been ongoing since October 2025. Nissan dealership informed me that I needed a new throttle body and an oil change. Against my better judgement, I paid $1374.02 to replace the part. Two weeks later, My engine started making knocking noises, excessive vibration and completely shut down. Subsequently, I discovered that there is a recall for my vehicle directly related to engine oil bearing failure(NHTSA 26V080, AND Throttle body(NHTSA 26V081). This is an unresolved recall issue and this is both frustrating and disturbing because the manufacture is trying to use delay tactics and avoiding my free repair. This dealer improperly denies a legitimate safety recall when they are required to inspect parts, update software and replace damaged parts at no cost to me. I was told since my warranty has expired, it will not be covered. To say I am baffled, is an understatement. This has nothing to do with my warranty expiration, rather everything to do with over 642,000 U.S. SUV(model years 2023-2025) Nissan Rogue safety campaign. My vehicle is a 2023 and I am asking for some assistance with enforcing the company to honor this recall. In the end, these franchise dealerships want to save money but had no problem taking my money when the vehicle was purchased. More disturbing, my vehicle neither has not been torn down nor any diagnostic code been confirmed. After asking why, I was told that the engine is locked up and it will not show. Please assist me with my refund to out of pocket expense with throttle body and a new engine asap. Thanks.

I turned on my car and it started smoking. (White smoke out of the exhaust). I decided to drive it to the nearest Nissan dealership (approximately 4.7 miles). I noticed a sputtering and loss of power while driving. Approximately 3 miles into the drive, the check engine light and see owner’s manual warning popped up on the dash. I noticed the engine temperature was really high, and I noticed a dramatic loss of power. I turned on my hazards and I pulled into auto zone which was along the route. I put coolant into it and the engine began struggling to even start. I got it started and attempted to drive the remaining mile to the dealership. I wasn’t able to get enough power to enter traffic safely. I reversed by putting it in neutral. I then called a tow truck and had it towed to the dealership.

The contact's mother owns a 2023 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle lost power with the message "Engine Malfunction - Power Reduced" displayed. The vehicle went into LIMP Mode and was towed to the dealer. The dealer initially replaced the water pump under warranty; however, several months later, the failure reoccurred, and the vehicle was towed back to the dealer, and the mass airflow sensor code was retrieved. The contact declined to pay the estimate provided by the dealer and sought a second opinion from an independent mechanic. The independent mechanic retrieved codes associated with the throttle body, knock sensor, and mass airflow sensor. The mechanic replaced the mass airflow sensor and the throttle body, but the failure persisted. Additional tests indicated an Engine Control Module failure, which the mechanic associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V437000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer acknowledged the report but refused to provide additional assistance because the vehicle had previously been repaired under the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

The engine failed, and yes its available for inspection, my safety was put at risk due to the white billowing smoke out the exhaust and the smell entering in the vehicle while driving down the interstate, i proceeded to pull off onto an exit and stop at a red light and my car made me put into park and then proceeded to not crank or move other then neutral, The problem was originally part of an active recall of R25D10 Reprogramming the ECM, and P4A470 replacing the turbo hose. I originally brought my vehicle to Nissan Dealership to have those fixed on February 6th 2026. However after finding that my vehicle ended up with low oil and dried my entire system of coolant, and then proceeded to turn off in traffic on August 22nd 2026, I became aware of an extended recall that did not notify me or my specific Vin yet in the system, however the recall had been upgraded since February 11th 2026. The only warning lights were saying I needed an oil change soon, the check service warning, and the coolant temperature gauge getting hot when my engine was needing to drive, and before shutting off the car told me to put into park, pressing on the gas would not move the car. The new recall codes are R25E2, and R25E3?

The vehicle experienced a catastrophic engine/motor failure. The engine became extremely loud/rattled and subsequently locked up, causing the vehicle to lose the ability to operate. The vehicle is currently being held for diagnosis/repair and should be available for inspection upon request. The vehicle experienced the failure while I was driving and left me stranded on a mountain. The vehicle lost its ability to operate, creating a significant safety risk because I was left stopped and without reliable transportation. A sudden engine failure while driving could also create a traffic hazard for the occupants and other motorists. Yes. The vehicle has been taken to a Nissan dealership for diagnosis following the failure. The vehicle experienced a catastrophic engine failure/lock-up. I am requesting the dealership’s written diagnostic report and confirmation of the exact failed component. The vehicle has been presented to Nissan for inspection and diagnosis. Nissan is currently involved in determining the cause of the engine failure. There has not been a police inspection that I am aware of. I am requesting that Nissan preserve and provide all diagnostic findings, photographs, technician notes, and repair records. Prior to the failure, the vehicle began exhibiting abnormal engine symptoms, including a loud/rattling engine noise and difficulty operating normally. The symptoms occurred shortly before the catastrophic failure on August 14, 2026. The vehicle subsequently became inoperable when the engine locked up. I am requesting the dealer’s diagnostic scan to determine whether any warning codes or messages were stored before or during the failure.

While driving my 2023 Nissan Rogue at approximately 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power while in motion, creating a serious risk of a crash and placing my safety and the safety of other motorists at risk. There were no oil warning lights, malfunction indicator lights, or other warnings indicating an impending engine failure. After losing power, the vehicle would not restart and was completely undriveable. It had to be towed to an authorized Nissan dealership. The dealership initially advised that the no-start condition was related to the battery cable and required me to pay for a battery cable repair. My battery was only a few months old and independently tested as good. The vehicle remained inoperable after the battery cable repair, and I was subsequently informed that the engine had failed. During the oil-pan inspection, the Nissan technician documented the inspection by video and specifically identified metallic debris in the oil pan. The dealership also reported sludge. I retained the dealership’s video documentation. My vehicle is subject to a Nissan safety recall involving engine bearing degradation that can result in engine failure and loss of motive power. The recall remedy includes inspection of the oil pan for metallic debris and engine replacement when necessary. Despite the loss of power at approximately 65 mph, engine failure, and metallic debris identified by its own technician, Nissan denied the recall repair based on sludge. Nissan Consumer Affairs also denied my escalation. I am requesting NHTSA review Nissan’s refusal to perform the safety recall remedy and determine whether the recalled bearing condition caused or contributed to this failure. The vehicle remains at the Nissan dealership and is available for inspection.
