2014 RAM 2500 Steering Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the steering system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Steering reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Drag link recall for my 2014 Ram 2500 was performed in 2019 and failed in 2024 causing the steering component to became loose while driving. When I had it "re-fixed" by Folsom Lake Dodge and Chrysler dealership they re-welded it without aligning the steering column so my steering wheel has been off ever since(not centered). This needs to be fixed not band aided.

On 5/28/2019 Recall V06 was completed on my 2014 Dodge Ram 2500. As part of that repair the adjustment nuts on the steering drag link were welded to prevent loosening and potential separation. On 3/3/2026 I had new front suspension components installed by Les Schwab Tire Center. During that service the technician advised a wheel alignment could not be performed because the welded drag link nuts prevented the steering linkage from being adjusted. Alignment is normally required after front suspension work and necessary for proper steering geometry. Les Schwab advised that grinding the welds off the drag link to perform the alignment and then rewelding the component would be unsafe because it could introduce hidden stress or cracking in the steering component. They recommended replacing the drag link with a Moog DS801538A redesigned component. The drag link had to be replaced to restore normal steering adjustment and allow the vehicle to be properly aligned. On 3/3/2026 I requested reimbursement from Dodge/Chrysler for the drag link replacement required due to the recall repair. The request was denied. On 3/4/2026 Chrysler representatives acknowledged the welded drag link rendered the vehicle unserviceable for alignment yet still denied reimbursement. Chrysler’s Vehicle Alignment Clarification Letter states that after the recall repair, owners should still be able to obtain an alignment using an approved procedure. In my case, however, the welded drag link prevented any adjustment necessary to perform that procedure, making the vehicle unserviceable for alignment until the drag link was replaced. The recall repair rendered a steering component non-adjustable and prevented normal service, leaving the vehicle less serviceable than before the recall repair. Documentation and photos are attached.

The contact owns a 2014 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving at 65 MPH, the steering wheel shifted while turning. The contact self-diagnosed the vehicle and found that there was slack in the track bar and brackets that needed to be reinforced. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by a dealer or independent mechanic. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 175,000.

I took my 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 (VIN: [XXX] ) to Glendora Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Lone Hill Ave. for Recall R46. The dealership kept my truck most of the day but did not perform the recall. Instead, they told me something untrue—that my upgraded suspension made the repair impossible—without ever attempting the repair. They then tried to pressure me into signing a waiver of liability stating the recall could not be performed and gave me the runaround when I refused. This dealership was unwilling to help me and misled me instead of completing a federally mandated safety recall. Negligent service. How could be possible to measure assembly threads without a torque wrench? I regret bringing the vehicle for the recall. Passed two weeks, and the RamCare and dealer did not contact to fix. It's dubious if all performed recall V06 was executed correctly at the dealer. Owners and dealer may think that the recall will not bring any risk for the owner. See attached pictures and the procedure.

Steering has been pulling hard to the right. This makes it harder to steer especially at highway speeds with a larger vehicle. Had two 4 wheel alignments and it was brought to my attention on my last alignment that the nuts on my adjuster sleeve had been cut off and therefore the reason of the bad alignment. They said that this will cause a continual alignment issue if not resolved. I contacted a Dodge dealership and they are willing to do an inspection, but out of my pocket. I really can't afford an inspection since I was told this issued has been under recall in the past. Also there are no stickers or labels indicating a recall was ever performed on the vehicle prior to me purchasing it.

The Front Suspension Track Bar Frame Bracket R46/NHTSA 15V-541. There was a recall issued in 2016 that impacted around an estimated 150,000+ vehicles. I purchased my Truck in 2020, and according to records this problem was fixed in 2016. I recently noticed something seriously wrong with the front suspension while driving, and just about lost control of my vehicle on the highway. After taking it to a certified maintenance technician for Dodge Ram, they found that the Recall was not completed at all. This problem involves faulty welding and the weld can break loose at any given moment without being fixed properly with a stability bracket. Mine gave loose on the highway going 70mph. My concern is how many other vehicles were marked as fixed, but in actuality were not.

On the night of September 15, 2023, I was driving home from work around 8:00 pm. I hit a bump on the interstate and my truck started the "death wobble". Having driven a Dodge truck for a very long time, I was aware of what was going on. The vehicle starts to "wobble" uncontrollably until you come to a complete stop. I was doing 70 mph and in the left lane when this happened, it immediately pulled me to the ditch in the right lane on the side of the interstate. I researched the problem and found that it had an R46 recall and the bracket in said recall had been ripped from the frame and broken in half. I hauled the vehicle to Jeff Wilson Chrysler in Brookhaven and they sent pictures to whomever for the recall and it was denied for some reason. The Service Manager then sent it to someone else because he thought that it should have been fixed based off what he has seen. I then called 1-800-992-1997 to speak with someone about my issues and they proceeded to tell me that my recall had already been fixed. When I or Mr. Shane at Jeff Wilson types it in, it clearly states the R46 recall has not been fixed. There is nothing on this bar or bracket that has been done. This bracket breaking almost caused me to wreck and I cant get any help in getting it resolved. Mr. Shane at Jeff Wilson in Brookhaven has been nothing but fantastic in this matter and continues to try and help me get it resolved with no help coming from anyone above the dealership. The vehicle is undrivable and has been out of commission for 5 weeks now with no progress. Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

Since purchasing in 2014 I have had my truck in and out of RAM Dealerships for steering issues and braking issues. Repeatedly told that it’s a RAM. A steering linkage recall was received and I took it in to have it done. Problem has been there continuously. The water pump issues continue Brakes are still an issue BUT I have been told at the Dealerships that they are hydraulic and they work differently.

Truck has around 67k miles. When preforming an oil change i checked the drag link knowing that some trucks are recalled. The outer jam but was loose. Called dealership and they said the recall was done. There are no indications that the recall was done. No marks or welds on the nuts as the recall states.

A Recall on the Drag Link Bar was for a bolt coming loose. The recall was to weld the bolt, so Drag Link Bar could not be adjusted or bolt come loose. I am the original owner and in order to do an updated alignment, I now need to buy a new adjustable drag link bar, because the original one can not be adjusted due to the recall fix was to weld a nut, so it cold not back off. So a $80 alignment charge, is now going to cost me $1000 because I have to buy a new Drag Link Bar. I have contacted RAM, they said the will not do anything, they fulfilled the Recall. Why would the NHTSA allow a fix to be a welded nut on a steering arm that might need to be adjusted for alignment? So it would of been better for me to not do the recall and wait for it to fail and then get a new drag link bar. My Drag Link bar does not need to be replaced due to age of vehicle or wear and tear. The Drag Link bar needs to be replaced because the part can not be adjusted, like all other steering parts.

My Ram 2500 truck is in need of repair under the R46 recall. On 8/4/2021 the dealership inspected my truck and claimed they had ordered parts and the repair will not be completed until June 2022. The recall bulletin states that a failure of the track bar frame bracket can cause a sudden crash without warning. There is a frequent popping or "clunk" sound coming from under the truck when turning and when going over bumps. This is my daily driving vehicle. I do not think it is safe to drive this truck for another 25,000-30,000 miles while waiting for these parts. This truck has been in the same dealer service center at least three times since 2015 for recall repairs and each time they have failed to address the R46 recall.

I HAVE A 2014 DODGE RAM2500 TRUCK, THERE WAS A SAFETY RECALL ON THE WELDING ON THE FRONT SUSPENSION TRACK BAR FRAME BRACKET THAT WAS IMPROPERLY WELDED DURING THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS. THE FIX WAS TO HAVE A BRACKET PLACED WITH ONE 60-70MM LONG M10 BOLT WITH 1.5 PITCH THREADS, ONE M10X1.5 PITCH THREAD NUT, THREE M10 FLAT WASHERS I BROUGHT MY TRUCK IN BECAUSE IT START POPPING EVERY TIME IN TURNED EITHER RIGHT OR LEFT I WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALL FIX HAD EXPIRED THERE NO WARRANTY ON THIS TO FIX IT NOW. SO I'M CONFUSED IT A SAFETY ISSUE AND NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL?? BECAUSE THE RECALL FIX HAS NO WARRANTY THE WARRANTY IS ONLY FOR 2 YEARS. SO I BOUGHT A TRUCK NEW WITH DEFECTS AND IT MY PROBLEM THAT WE'RE NOT KNOWN AT THE TIME FROM THE MANUFACTURE. NOT SURE HOW THIS IS RIGHT OR FAIR TO THE CUSTOMER. IT A SAFETY ISSUE NOT COSMETIC. MY TRUCK ONLY HAS 80.000 AND IT A DIESEL SHOULD LAST A LONG TIME. PLEASE HELP THANK YOU

RAM HAD PREVIOUSLY ISSUED A RECALL TO WELD THE DRAG LINK COMPONENT OF THE STEERING SYSTEM. RAM CALLED THIS RECALL NUMBER V06 AND MY TRUCK HAS BEEN COMPLETED. HOWEVER, THIS RECALL REQUIRES A WELD TO THE ADJUSTING SLEEVE OF THE DRAG LINK, HOWEVER, WITH THIS WELD, AS THE DRAG LINK GOES THRU NORMAL WEAR, YOU CANNOT COMPLETE A FULL WHEEL ALIGNMENT BECAUSE ITS WELDED. WITHOUT A COMPLETE ALIGNMENT, TIRES WILL STILL WEAR PREMATURELY AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. JUST REPLACED MINE TO THE COST OF $875 AND AM NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT. RECALL WAS COMPLETED ON 6 MAY 2019 AND HAD TO REPLACE MY TIRES A YEAR LATER. I FULLY EXPECT THE NHTSA RE-ENGAGE WITH RAM AND THIS NEEDS TO CORRECTED. RAM NEEDS TO RE-ENGINEER A FIX AND REIMBURSE THOSE CUSTOMERS WHO HAD TO GET NEW TIRES. AM QUITE SURE THAT RAM HAS HAD NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS AND HAS NOT ANNOUNCED ANYTHING YET. AT THE TIME OF RECALL, HAD 48110 MILES, NOW I HAVE 56450 ON 23 JUNE 2020 WITH AN INCREASE OF ONLY 8000 MILES IN 13 MONTHS AND NEEDED TIRES. *TR

I'VE HAD THE DRAG LINK RECALL DONE ON MY TRUCK AT THE DEALERSHIP AND I DIDN'T HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THEY DID TO FIX IT TILL I STARTED SEEING POSTS ONLINE ABOUT WELDING THE ADJUSTING LINK ON IT. WELL MY TRUCK IS DRAGGING TO THE RIGHT AND NEEDS AN ALIGNMENT, AND I KNOW IF I TAKE IT SOMEWHERE, THEY'LL HAVE TO CUT THAT WELD TO PROPERLY DO THE ALIGNMENT, AND I DON'T WANT TO DO THAT. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE ENTIRE DRAG LINK REPLACED SO NOTHING HAS TO BE WELDED TOGETHER AND KEEP ME FROM GETTING IT ALIGNED.

NHTSA VEHICLE SAFETY RECALLS DURING THE FOLLOWING RECALL, DODGE WELDED ALL MY STEERING ARM COMPONENTS TOGETHER SO NOW I CANNOT GET AN ALIGNMENT DONE CORRECTLY OR, IF NEED BE, DISCONNECT WORN OUT PARTS BECAUSE THEY WELDED THESE PARTS TOGETHER? I WAS TOLD THIS AND SHOWN THIS BY KOST TIRE COMPANY IN CARBONDALE PA 18407. THEY WERE FLABBERGASTED BY THIS MOST ABSURD, STUPID FIX DODGE HAD DONE AND TOLD ME THEY CANNOT FIX MY TRUCK PROPERLY? HERE IS THE FOLLOWING RECALL INFO. RECALL NUMBER 15V541000 RECALL DATE 08/26/2015 COMPONENT STEERING SUMMARY:CHRYSLER (FCA US LLC) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2014 RAM 2500 TRUCKS AND 2013-2014 RAM 3500 TRUCKS AND CAB CHASSIS MANUFACTURED OCTOBER 9, 2012, TO JULY 29, 2014. THE AFFECTED VEHICLES MAY HAVE INADEQUATE WELDS SECURING THE FRONT TRACK BAR FRAME BRACKETS, WHICH MAY RESULT IN THE BRACKET COMPONENTS SEPARATING FROM THE FRAME. CONSEQUENCE IF THE BRACKET COMPONENTS SEPARATE FROM THE FRAME, THE VEHICLE MAY BE MORE DIFFICULT TO STEER AND CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. WHAT OWNERS SHOULD DO CHRYSLER WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND INSTALL A REINFORCEMENT BRACKET OVER THE FRONT TRACK BAR BRACKET. THIS RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 24, 2016. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-853-1403. CHRYSLER'S NUMBER FOR THIS RECALL IS R46. THIS FIX THEY DID IS AFFECTING MY ABILITY TO HOLD THE VEHICLE ON THE ROAD? MY WIFE DROVE MY TRUCK AND IS VERY SCARED OF RUNNING OFF THE ROAD NOW? THEY WELDED PARTS OF MY DRAG LINE AND ALIGNMENT BARS TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WANDERS ALL OVER THE ROAD. I CAN'T EVENT FIX THIS BECAUSE THEY WELDED ALL THE STREERING COMPONENTS SOLID.

YOUR RECALL REMEDY FOR 19V-021 IS UNACCEPTABLE. THE SOLUTION OF WELDING THE DRAG LINK ADJUSTER NUTS TO THE SLEEVE, PERMANENTLY RENDERS THE VEHICLE FROM BEING PROPERLY ALIGNED FOREVER. THE ONLY WAY AROUND THIS IS TO BREAK THE WELDS, ADJUST THE STEERING SLEEVE AND THEN WELDING THE NUTS AGAIN. THIS IS AN UNACCEPTABLE SOLUTION AS MOST ALIGNMENT SHOPS DO NOT HAVE WELDING EQUIPMENT TO DO THIS, THUS POTENTIALLY PLACING THE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS IN DANGER AGAIN. YOUR AGREED SOLUTION DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO ADDRESS PERMANENT FIX AND WAS NOTHING MORE THAN A WAY TO MITIGATE COST FOR FCA. THIS PERMANENT FIX NEEDS TO BE INSTALLATION OF THE REDESIGNED PART OR REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE PURCHASE/INSTALLATION OF AN AFTERMARKET PART THAT WILL NOT SUFFER THE SAME POTENTIAL FAILURE AS THE PART UNDER RECALL.
