2017 RAM 3500 Suspension Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the suspension system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Suspension reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

V06 Recall was attempted, but welding could not be done correctly - was told that was the "best they could do" truck continued to steer poorly (constantly have to hold the steering wheel to one side or the truck will veer out of the lane) bc steer ahead wrong, and to wear outer edge of the tires to an unsafe level in less than half the normal mileage. Now Dodge dealership/Stellantis claims the drag link assembly was permanently damaged by their prior recall work, and that truck cannot be aligned or driven safely but also won't fix it. They have been telling me they will action the case "today" or "one businesses day" since 27 Aug. I found out that the alignment and steering problem I had been spending money to fix since 2019 was a result of their poor recall repair and trying to get a response from Dodge Stellantis since AUG 06, and I have been without the use of the truck and unable to care for my horses since then. I have spent more than 14 hours directly on the phone with them without any action - my truck remains essentially impounded at the dealership. Est 20k miles at initial recall V06 failed repair attempt but their records should say. Current document is currently dealership that admitted the initial recall repair attempt damaged the draglink assembly beyond any hope of salvage/alignment.

Steering and/or front suspension developed into what is called a death wobble at 70mph. The steering wheel had so much hard wobble that it became almost uncontrollable to hold onto it, and keep the vehicle moving straight which put the vehicle onto the shoulder and into a shallow ditch. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No, but when it happened previously, I had it looked at, and supposedly repaired. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No, there was no damage to the vehicle, but I am taking it back to the shop where the repair was supposedly made. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, it came on suddenly.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 RAM 3500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BALL JOINT ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE DAMAGED THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE BALL JOINT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED WITH A SPECIAL ADJUSTABLE BALL JOINT, WHICH WOULD ALIGN WITH THE FRONT END AXLE TO PREVENT THE BALL JOINT FROM DAMAGING THE TIRE. THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 7,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 RAM 3500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ON A HOIST, AN UNKNOWN AFTER MARKET SPACER ON THE SPRING CAME OUT OF PLACE AND DAMAGED THE BOOT. THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC REPAIRED THE THE VEHICLE. THE REPAIRS WERE UNKNOWN. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TAKEN TO THE DEALER (RUSSELL WESTBROOK CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM OF VAN NUYS 6110 VAN NUYS BLVD, VAN NUYS, CA 91401 (818) 646-6908) FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 19V021000 (STEERING). THE CONTACT ASKED THE DEALER TO LOOK AT THE ISSUE CONCERNING THE SUSPENSION AND GIVE AN OPINION ON THE ISSUE. ANOTHER DEALER (AUTONATION CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM VALENCIA 23820 CREEKSIDE RD, SANTA CLARITA, CA 91355 (661) 379-7709) HAD REPAIRED THE SPACER THE FIRST TIME BUT THE CONTACT WAS AGAIN CONCERNED THAT IF THE VEHICLE HIT A BUMP AND THE SPACER CAME OUT OF PLACE AGAIN IT COULD LEAD TO A LOSS OF CONTROL AND A POSSIBLE ACCIDENT. IT WAS UNKNOWN IF THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000.

THE ENTIRE TRUCK SHAKES AT 70MPH AND ABOVE. IT FEELS LIKE THE TIRES ARE EXTREMELY OUT OF BALANCE. THE DEALER HAS BALANCED AND ROAD FORCE BALANCED THE TIRES, BUT THIS HAS NOT SOLVED THE PROBLEM. CHRYSLER KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BUT IS UNWILLING TO FIX IT.

ONLINE RESEARCH BEST DESCRIBES THIS PROBLEM AS THE DODGE "DEATH WOBBLE". WHEN AN UNEVEN SPOT OR A POTHOLE IN THE ROAD IS DRIVEN THROUGH, THE FRONT WHEELS WOBBLE AND SHIMMY VIOLENTLY UNTIL THE VEHICLE IS STOPPED. THE LOCAL DEALER AS WELL AS A LOCAL ALIGNMENT SHOP HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM.

DRIVING ON I-95 IN GEORGIA, ALL 8 OF THE LUG STUDS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE DUAL REAR WHEELS SHEARED OFF, CAUSING THE OUTER WHEEL TO SHOOT PAST THE TRUCK IN TRAFFIC, WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STOP THE VEHICLE. VEHICLE WAS MOVING AT A RATE OF 60 MPH WHEN THE ONSET OF SEVERE VIBRATION CAUSED ME TO LOOK FOR A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER, AND SLOW DOWN. THANK GOD THE OTHER REAR WHEEL REMAINED ON THE HUB, THOUGH COMPLETELY UNSECURED. THE TRUCK HAS JUST 4,500 MILES ON IT.

THERE IS A CHASSIS VIBRATION ISSUE WHERE THE ENTIRE TRUCK SHAKES AT SPEEDS OVER 60 MPH. THE SEATS SHAKE AND THE WHOLE TRUCK SHAKES AS IF A TIRE IS REALLY OUT OF BALANCE. THERE IS NO SHAKE IN THE STEERING WHEEL HOWEVER, AND NEW TIRES, AND RECENTLY BALANCED TIRES, HAVE NO EFFECT ON THE ISSUE. IT SEEMS TO START IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. MANY PEOPLE ON THE FORUMS REPORT THE SAME PROBLEM AND NO ONE HAS FOUND A FIX FOR IT THAT I KNOW OF. DEALERS JUST THROW NEW TIRES AND WHEELS AT THE PROBLEM WITH NO RESOLUTION. CHECK FORUMS LIKE CUMMINSFORUM.COM AND TURBO DIESEL REGISTER FOR THE HUNDREDS OF THREADS ON THE ISSUE. ALSO APPEARS 2500 AND 3500S ARE BOTH EFFECTED AND HAVE DIFFERENT REAR SUSPENSION SETUPS.

2017 RAM 3500 DUALLY 4X4 68RFE, FIRST TIME TRUCK WAS TAKEN OUT ON THE HIGHWAY OUT OF TOWN WHERE SPEED LIMIT WAS 75. TRUCK HAS A VERY PRONOUNCED SHAKE IN THE REAR. THIS IS FELT IN CAB OF THE TRUCK, BUT NOT THE STEERING WHEEL. PASSENGER SEAT SHAKES BACK AND FORTH. LIKE REAR IS OSCILLATING, AND A DRONING CAN BE HEARD. IT COMES AND GOES IN INTENSITY. HAPPENS ON ALL TYPES OF ROAD SURFACES. RAM FIELD ENGINEER, AND REGIONAL MANAGER SAY IT IS KNOWN ISSUE. TAKEN OTHER TRUCKS OUT WITH VERY MINOR VIBRATION, AND ALSO WITH NO VIBRATION. THIS WAS DONE WITH SERVICE MANAGER TO CONFIRM ISSUE. TIRES HAVE BEEN CHANGED OUT, DRIVE SHAFT CHANGED OUT WITH NO CHANGE. REGIONAL MANAGER SAYS TAKE TRUCK IT IS NORMAL. NO ADDITIONAL REPAIRS WILL BE MADE. TRUCK IS TWO MONTHS OLD AND HAS 1700 MILES AT THIS POINT. GOT TO PULL MY FIFTH WHEEL BUT VERY CONCERNED OF FAILURE ON THE ROAD THAT COULD BE CATASTROPHIC, SINCE UNKNOWN CAUSE IN DRIVELINE. VEHICLE HAD A STAR CASE, WITH NO RESOLUTION TO THE ISSUE.
