2022 RAM 3500 Electrical Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the electrical system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Electrical reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The center infotainment stack screen refused to power up when starting the vehicle. The radio and hvac functions worked, but the screen would not turn on preventing the backup camera from functioning. Restarting the system twice and restarting the vehicle failed to get the system to function. Upon restart several hours later all systems appear to function normally. A video is available of the failure.

Every month I am receiving a check engine light for abs / traction control / failure. Dealer states HPU unit is bad, however I noticed all the fuses in the fuse box were loose. I pushed them in to reseat and the error cleared. This happens monthly. This last time happened during a snow storm and disabled abs.

On 9 September, while driving, I got an emergency dashboard notice that stated Throttle System Malfunction contact dealer. It went out and then another immediately flashed that stated Exhaust System Malfunction contact dealer. The vehicle lost power within seconds after the second notice. I coasted to a stop on the side of the road. Once stopped, smoke quickly started coming out of the engine compartment and then flames. I contacted 911, an engine arrived but the truck was fully engaged and completely burnt.

RAM 13A Recall. Due to the fire risk, I was unable to park my truck at work. I ordered the parts from a RAM Dealer and installed following the instructions in the 13A Recall provided by NHTSA (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2023/RCRIT-23V060-7126.pdf). I submitted a request for re-imbursement to the manufacturer showing pictures of the part being replaced, and a copy of the parts invoiced. The Manufacter has refused to re-imburse the replacement cost. US Customer Care Thu, May 11, 4:00 PM (4 days ago) to me Dear [XXX], Thank you for allowing Ram Customer Care an opportunity to address your concern. Our primary focus is your satisfaction. Upon thorough review and consideration, we regret to inform you that your request for reimbursement has been denied due to the following reason/s : • Insufficient document/s (no repair order). self installation is not reimbursable as per corporate resources policy guidelines. • The repairs were not completed at a certified RAM dealership As much as quality service is our concern, please be informed that there are certain guidelines and qualifications that we need to meet in order to grant your request. The contact owns a 2022 Ram 3500. The contact stated that the vehicle was purchased brand new. The contact stated while driving at various speeds after the dealer had delivered the vehicle to him, he felt a significant buzzing sensation. The contact stated that the sensation was extremely strong and had caused him and his friend who was occupying the front passenger seat to have headaches. The vehicle was taken to the dealer the next day. The dealer diagnosed that the vehicle was experiencing an extremely High Electric Magnetic Frequency. The dealer took the dash apart and wrapped it in shielding foil to temper the radiation. However, the failure persisted. Chrysler Regional Representative informed the contact that he could continue to drive the vehicle as it was still performing as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10.

This vehicle went back to the dealer numerous times and ultimately was surrendered to Chrysler under lemon law. It had ABS braking issues along with trailer brake problems. At about 8000 miles it started having ABS alarms which cause a bunch of other issues that I feel is a serious safety problem. When the ABS system malfunctions it causes the traction control,4 wheel drive, and trailer brake systems to fail as well. I never brought the vehicle home after the last incident in September 2022 as I felt it was totally unsafe to drive especially with the trailer attached.

Fire reported

The vehicle had been parked in the street for several hours. I started the vehicle in order to back it into my driveway for the night and then turned it off (total run time for the operation was most likely under a minute from the time the engine was started until it was shut down). The temperature was relatively cool and I did have to wait for the grid heater to cycle before the engine started. I did not notice any signs, warnings, safety indicators, or dash lights to alert me to any possible problems. Upon exiting the truck I detected a very faint and quickly disipating odor of hot electrical components, similar to a fourescent light ballast that has gone bad. I looked around but didn't see anything. I began retrieving some tools from the rear passenger side of the truck and smelled the same odor but stronger. Over the next 30-40 seconds I began to search for the source and realized that white smoke was now pouring out from under the hood of the truck. I was able to get it to start and pulled it into the street just prior to flames coming from under the hood near the drivers windshield. 911 was contacted as I tried to remove any belongings from the cab. The truck is now a total loss due to fire most likely. The fire and police responded to put the vehicle out but it was almost completely engulfed on their arrival. My insurance company is attempting to gain possession of the vehicle to begin their investigation. The Vehicle has approx 16,900 miles and was Serviced for safety recall Y76 for risk of engine fire on September 21st of 2022. The vehicle had 14,192 miles when it was inspected and passed according to the recall standards at the time. The vehicle has no other history of repairs or service items and has had no other mechanical or electrical problems to date. This was a very close call that could have resulted in the loss of my home, all my possessions, and risked harm to myself and my family if I had not stopped to get tools from the cab.

My truck had around 230 miles on it and I experienced a thumping noise from the engine compartment. The thumping disappears once the truck reaches operating temperature and the EGR valve opens. Dodge claims they have no idea what the cause is. Additionally, there is an electrical draw. I have to jump start my truck every morning. The claim it is the amplifier. I pulled the fuse overnight and still had to jump start the following morning. I’m getting the run around.
