What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 1995 Safari Sahara, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.
Reports by component
Ranked by how many owner reports name each component category
- Engine150.0%
- Suspension150.0%
Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.
Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHEN THIS PART FAILS IT SHORT CIRCUITS TO THE STARTER SOLONOID CAUSING THE STARTER TO TURN THE ENGINE. THE ONLY SOLUTION IS TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERIES HOWEVER BY THAT TIME THE WIRING IS ON FIRE. ON MY VEHICLE, THE NEW FUEL CUT OFF PART FAILED ON THE SECOND OR THIRD START OF THE ENGINE, AGAIN BURNING OUT THE STARTER BUT NOT THE WIRING. IF THIS UNIT SHOULD FAIL WHILE DRIVING, AS THE REPLACEMENT DID, A SERIOUS ACCIDENT COULD OCCUR BECAUSE THE ENGINE DIES LEAVING THE DRIVER WITHOUT ANY POWER FOR STEERING AND THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT COULD BE ON FIRE. THERE IS NO WAY TO TELL. THIS PART SHOULD BE MADE TO FAIL IN A SAFEMODE RATHER THAN SHORT CIRCUIT TO GROUND VIA THE STARTER.

Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
FRONT SUSPENSION BOTTOMS CAUSING FRONT WHEELS TO HIT ON UNDERSIDE OF MOTORHOME FLOOR CAUSING MOMENTARY LOSS OF CONTROL. MAGNUM (CHASSIS MFG) STATES THAT 95 SAHARA WERE BUILT WITH WHEELS TOO CLOSE TO FLOOR. WITH LATER MODELS, WHEELS WERE LOCATED 1 INCH FURTHER AWAY FROM FLOOR. SAFARI IS AWARE OF PROBLEM AND HAS RETROFITTED 95 MODELS WITH LONGER "LEAF SPRING SHACKLE BRACKETS" ONLY FOR THOSE PEOPLE UNDER WARRANTY. SINCE I PURCHASED USED, CHASSIS WARRANTY IS VOID PER SAFARI. PROBLEM OCCURS AT ALL SPEEDS INCLUDING DURING BRAKING DOWN STEEP HILLS.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
