2021 Thor Motor Coach Freedom Traveler Owner Complaints

Reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers, shown in full

Data refreshed

Complaints on fileComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

U-bolts on rear axle passenger curbside that holds suspension leaf spring to axle: One broke completely off and separated into two pieces dropping partial u-bolt to the ground, second u-bolt twisted. These u-bolts hold the axle under the suspension leaf spring. I have parts. Fortunately the motorhome was parked in a campsite. If we had been traveling on the highway, this broken part could have ended up in another vehicle windshield. If the second twisted u-bolt would also have failed while traveling, the axle may have come loose and possibly caused the motorhome to flip. The repair was completed at an authorized Ford repair facility. Dealership would not submit for warranty due to light surface rust. This is a Ford F53 chassis, built 12/14/2020 with 6,234 miles. Ford has 2 rear suspension recalls on this chassis that have been repaired. 04/05/2023U-bolt broke without any warning of problem.

The contact owns a 2021 Thor Motor Coach Freedom Traveler built on a 2020 Ford F-59 chassis. The contact stated while driving 60-65 MPH, the leveling system warning light illuminated. Smoke then filled the cabin of the RV due to the hydraulic line rubbing against the exhaust system. Additionally, hydraulic fluid was leaking from the RV. The contact pulled over and exited the RV. The contact waited until the smoke had cleared and the hydraulic fluid had drained, then drove to the residence. The RV was then towed to the dealer, where it was determined that the hydraulic line needed to be replaced and rerouted. The RV was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000.
