2006 Toyota Camry Solara Brakes Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the brake system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Brakes reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

NHSTA SAFETY COMPLAINT TEXT Safety defect and Incident Chronology: I am reporting a catastrophic, recurring sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) defect originating strictly from a forward idle state, culminating in a severe bidirectional runaway and property damage crash. This vehicle utilizes an Electronic Throttle System-intelligent (ETCS) that failed to trigger a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) , Check Engine Light or fail safe limp mode during all three events. INCIDENT 1 (MAY 15, 2026): While maneuvering at low-speed idle into my residential garage, the engine un commandingly surged . I was tapping the brake to go cautiously. Simultaneously, the brake pedal became rigid and physically impossible to depress. The vehicle crashed forward into my tool benches and drywall. INCIDENT 2 ( on or about May 22,2026): Under the identical conditions, the vehicle without command surged forward with total brake rigidity. Fortunately, this time it caused no damage. INCIDENT 3 (June 10, 2026) During a slow speed idle parking maneuver , the vehicle violently surged forward with total brake rigidity and struck shelving. To cut propulsion I immediately shifted out of Drive. Instead of neutralizing the event the car the car underwent a severe bidirectional runaway, violently accelerating in REVERSE for approximately 35 feet across my driveway crashing into my woodpile . I ended up moving forward and stopped somehow. TECHNICAL EVALUATION for INVESTIGATORS: The recurring rock hard brake pedal serves as empirical pneumatic proof that the throttle body valve uncommandedly opened wide while my foot was actively modulating the brakes, instantly destroying the engine manifold vacuum reserve. Furthermore, the vehicle accelerating forward and backwards proves system failure. The vehicle was transported via flatbed to PAPPAS Toyota. Toyota Case # TA 261680161. I request NHSTA safety Egrs secure and audit this transient ETCS-I failure mode.

I HAVE A 2006 TOYOTA SOLARA, SLE, 6 CYL. ENG., AUTOMATIC, SUNROOF. I WAS DRIVING INTO A PARKING SPACE AT THE MALL, SLOWING DOWN WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. AS I PUSHED ON THE BRAKE TO PARK, IT WENT TO THE FLOOR, AND MY ENGINE SURGED LOUDLY, HITTING THE PARKED CAR IN FRONT OF ME ABOUT 9-12 FEET OUT OF IT'S SPACE. I FRANTICALLY TURNED MY STEERING WHEEL TO MY LEFT, JUMPED A CURB, WENT THROUGH A FEW BUSHES AND HIT A TREE WHICH STOPPED MY CAR. I TURNED MY KEY OFF, PLACED IT IN PARK AND THREW MY KEYS ON TO THE PASSENGER SEAT. THIS CAR CAUSED THE CRASH. I HAVE NEVER FELT ANYTHING SO STRANGE AS I COULD NOT STOP THIS CAR WITH THE BRAKE. IT HAPPENED IN ONLY ABOUT 4 SECONDS. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER, AS I DIDN'T WANT TO DRIVE IT. I FEEL IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE UNTIL IT IS FIXED BY TOYOTA. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY TROUBLE WITH MY CAR EXCEPT SOME HESITATION IN MOVING FAST INTO TRAFFIC. TOYOTA SENT AN INSPECTOR TO THE DEALERSHIP TO CHECK OUT THE CAR ON 8/17/10. I CALLED TO SEE WHAT THE RESULTS WERE AND THEY SENT A MESSAGE BY A SECRETARY THAT NOTHING WAS ABNORMAL AND IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE. I WILL NOT ALLOW MY INSURANCE TO PAY FOR THE PHYSICAL DAMAGE UNTIL TOYOTA FIXES THE BRAKE/ACCELERATION PROBLEM. I AM LUCKY THAT I, OR SOMEONE ELSE DIDN'T GET KILLED OR HURT. NEXT TIME IT COULD BE DIFFERENT. THIS CRASH WAS NOT MY FAULT! IF ALL THE OTHER CARS HAD THESE PROBLEMS, WHY DO THEY FEEL THE SOLARA ISN'T INCLUDED? MAYBE, THIS IS THE FIRST OF MANY SOLARA'S. I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT TOYOTA DOESN'T RESPOND TO CUSTOMER'S BETTER. ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS FIX IT AND IT'S OVER. I'M NOT SO CONFIDENT IN ANY OF THEIR PRODUCTS AS OF NOW. I DIDN'T REALIZE SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME STORY, THEY ALL CAN'T BE LYING! THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME SEND IN THIS COMPLAINT. I'M SURE I WILL HAVE A FIGHT ON MY HANDS. *TR
