What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Toyota Camry Solara, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

ON MARCH 26,2020 I WENT TO DRIVE MY CAR. THE DASHBOARD WAS CRACKED, STICKY, AND MELTED THROUGHOUT. THE NEXT DAY I CALLED PRIORITY TOYOTA AND WAS TOLD (JOHN SERVICE MANAGER) THAT THEY WOULD NOT FIX IT DUE TO THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT NOTIFICATION-ZE6 WHICH ENDED MAY 31, 2017. ALSO, I HAD OWNED THE CAR FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS. HE WOULD REPLACE IT AT MY COST OF APPROX. $2200 BUT HE WOULD PROVIDE AN EXACT AMOUNT WHEN I DECIDED TO FIX IT. THEN I EXPLORED THE INTERNET TO SEE THE SCOPE OF THE PROBLEM. IT CAN LEAD TO VISIBILITY PROBLEMS (GLARE) AND PROBLEMS WITH THE DASHBOARD AIRBAGS. YESTERDAY, APRIL 7, 2020 I CALLED THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER 1-888-2709371 AND SPOKE TO RANDALL WHO REPEATED WHAT JOHN HAD SAID, BUT ADDED THAT MY CAR WAS OLD AND NOT WORTH MUCH AND I HAD GOTTEN MY MONIES WORTH OUT OF IT. I ASKED WHO I COULD CALL NEXT AND HE SAID HE WAS THE END OF THE LINE. I WAS ASSIGNED A CASE #[XXX] BUT CAN'T SEE TO READ IT FOR MYSELF. THE CAR HAS REMAINED IN MY GARAGE SINCE I SAW THE PROBLEM ON MARCH 26. IT IS GETTING WORSE. IT WAS LAST DRIVEN ON MARCH 5 WITH NO PROBLEMS. I HAVE A TOYOTA RAV 2017 FROM PRIORITY TOYOTA, HAMPTON, VA 757 838-5000. PLEASE HELP ME IF YOU CAN. *TR *LN*DT INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).'*JB*JB
DASHBOARD HAS BECOME STICKY AND SHINY. THIS HAS PRODUCED A GLARE MAKING VISIBILITY AN ISSUE. CLEANING DOESN'T HELP.

Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
Copper wiring on driver seat caught fire causing damage to driver door driver harness underneath the dash and electric seat mechanism also caused staining to the fabric and interior
The "VSC" continues to come on which in turn causes the ck engine light to come on. There needs to be a recall on this issue. I have been researching it, and finding it a problem for so so many customers.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Camry Solara. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and then turned on when the air bag suddenly deployed. The contact received injuries to their arms and medical attention was required. The contact had not been able to find a dealer who was willing to repair air bags, therefore, the vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 69,000.
MY DASH IS CRACKING AND FALLING APART. WHAT KIND OF ENGINEERING IS THIS THAT THE DASH FALLS APART IN SUCH A SHORT TIME IN A CAR THAT IS SUPPOSED TO OUT LAST ITS COMPETITORS.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
COMPLAINT REGARDING STICKY, SHINY DASHBOARD. I JUST PURCHASED A 2006 TOYOTA SOLARA. COMPLAINT IS ABOUT THE DASHBOARD. (1) THE STICKYNESS OF THE DASHBOARD - HOLDS DUST AND GRIME AND CAN NOT BE CLEANED, AND (2) THE STICKY SURFACE RESULTS IN A SHINY/REFLECTIVE CREATING A SAFETY HAZARD AS IT REFLECTS GLARE BOTH DAY AND NIGHT ON THE WINDSHIELD. THIS IS A HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUE. I BOUGHT IN OCT 2017 AND IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP NEAR ME. I WAS TOLD DUE TO THE CAR MANUFACTURE DATE, I WAS NOT ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE RECALL OF THE DASHBOARD FROM TOYOTA. I AM TOLD THE DASHBOARD PART IS $1,800 - WOW! THIS IS A HEALTH & SAFETY ISSUE AND I DEMAND MY DASHBOARD BE REPLACED AT NO CHARGE TO ME.
MY 2006 SOLARA CONVERTIBLE HAS DEEP CRACKS ALL ALONG THE DASH END TO END WHICH MAY AFFECT THE OPERABILITY OF THE AIRBAG. IT'S SHINY, GOOFY, STICKY WHICH DEFINITELY AFFECTS VISIBILITY. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ELSE IT AFFECTS. I THOUGHT IT WAS CAUSED BY HEAT UNTIL I READ THE SOME 75 EXACTLY IDENTICAL COMPLAINTS. TOYOTA NEEDS TO RECALL THE DASH RATHER THAN ASK WE CONSUMERS TO PAY $2,400 TO FIX IT. THIS WAS A $32,000 VEHICLE. BAD ENOUGH THAT THE ADHESIVE AROUND THE BACK WINDOW DISSOLVED, NOW THIS. IT'S UNDRIVABLE, UNSALEABLE AND I ONLY HAVE 27000 MILES ON IT

I WAS SITTING IN MY CAR STOPPED BEHIND SCHOOL BUS WITH MY SEATBELT ON .I WAS REAR ENDED MY SHOULDERBELT DID NOT LOCK AND MY VISOR DROPPED DOWN AND SEVERED MY FOREHEAD AND I HIT THE TOP OF MY HEAD.I NEEDED 50 STITCHES IN MY FOREHEAD AND NEEDED PLASTIC SURGERY. THE VISOR, WHICH IS ALL STEEL , SLICED MY FOREHEAD OPEN.I DO NOT THINK A STEEL VISOR SHOULD BE IN FRONT OF A DRIVERS HEAD.
STRUCK FROM REAR BY ANOTHER DRIVER AT HIGH RATE OF SPEED; WAS THROWN FORWARD INTO DRIVER SIDE INTERIOR DOOR PANEL AND DRIVER'S HEAD STRUCK THE CONVERTIBLE TOP METAL TOP-FOLDING STRUCTURE. BELIEVE THE SEAT BELT TENSIONER DEVICE FAILED TO FUNCTION PROPERLY AND THE AIR BAG FAILED TO DEPLOY, AS WELL. THE CONVERTIBLE TOP FOR THIS MODEL WAS IN THE UP POSITION AT IMPACT. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND THE SEAT BELT CAUSED BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER TO LURCH FORWARD, CAUSING SERIOUS BODILY DAMAGE TO BOTH PARTIES. DRIVER SUSTAINED BRAIN INJURY AND SPINAL INJURY AND IS STILL RECEIVING TREATMENT AND SURGERY FOR HIS INJURIES. PASSENGER IS ALSO RECEIVING ON-GOING TREATMENT FOR SPINAL AND KNEE INJURY SUSTAINED AS THE RESULT OF THE SEAT BELT TENSIONER AND AIR BAG FAILURE, AS WELL. *TR

I OWN A 2006 TOYOTA SOLARA CONVERTIBLE. WHILE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE I HAVE TO ACCELERATE, FOR EXAMPLE WHEN CHANGING LANES ON THE HIGHWAY AND TRYING TO INCREASE SPEED, THE VEHICLE HESITATES AND THERE IS A DELAY AND THEN WILL INCREASE IN POWER. THIS IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE THIS ALSO HAPPENED AT AN INTERSECTION WHEN I WAS TURNING LEFT, I DEPRESSED THE GAS PEDAL-THE VEHICLE HESITATED, THEN POWER WAS REINSTATED. THIS IS A DAILY OCCURRENCE AND IT NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO. I BELIEVE A RECALL NEEDS TO BE ISSUED DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM AND POTENTIAL EFFECTS IT COULD HAVE. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 TOYOTA CAMRY/SOLARA CONVERTIBLE. IT HAS A TENDENCY TO HESITATE WHEN I ACCELERATE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AS I DRIVE INTERSTATE 95 IN THE NORTHERN VA AREA AND HAVE HAD SEVERAL CLOSE CALLS WHILE TRYING TO GET ONTO THE HIGHWAY. THIS NEEDS TO BE A RECALL ITEM. *TR

YESTERDAY, JULY 26, 2015, I RECEIVED IN THE MAIL A SECOND LETTER FROM TOYOTA MOTOR SALES CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE DEPARTMENT REGARDING THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM - ZE6 CONCERNING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE STICKY DASHBOARD OF SOME MAKE AND MODEL. MINE IS A 2006 TOYOTA SOLARA. IT'S RIDICULOUS WHY THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT IS ONLY FOR THE STICKY DASHBOARD WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL AND INSIDE DOOR PANELS ARE MADE OF THE EXACT SAME MATERIAL. THESE PARTS MUST BE COVERED AS WELL ESPECIALLY WE TOUCH THESE PARTS EVERY SINGLE TIME WE USE THE VEHICLE. ON MINE, I NOTICED THE DISINTEGRATION OF THE MATERIAL SINCE LAST YEAR WHEN I WAS WIPE CLEANING THE INTERIOR OF MY SOLARA. THIS WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT MUST BE EXTENDED TO FIX THE MATERIAL ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND DOOR PANELS. I KNOW I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE EXPERIENCING THIS BECAUSE I READ BLOGS AND THERE ARE OTHERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE EVEN ON LEXUS 2006. YOU SHOULD LOOK INTO THIS BECAUSE WE PAY A LOT IN PURCHASING OUR VEHICLES AND WE DESERVE OUR MONEY'S WORTH.

The contact was informed that a tire was losing air and was rotating slower than the other tires. The dealer recommended changing the tires. The tires were replaced but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted and filed a claim. The failure mileage was approximately 51,000.
