The contact rented a 2009 Toyota Camry. The contact stated while driving 65-75 MPH with cruise control mode engaged, the vehicle became uncontrollable and swerved to the right independently. The contact did not recall whether a warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that while attempting to swerve back to the left, the vehicle rolled over four times and landed on the wheels. The air bags deployed. The contact stated that her daughter was occupying the rear passenger's side seat at the time the incident occurred and was assisted out of the vehicle by bystanders. The contact's daughter was then airlifted to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with facial lacerations, one punctured lung, and the other lung was not operating at full capacity. The contact's daughter remained in the ICU for four days. The contact was able to exit the vehicle. The contact sustained a broken left toe and burns on the left arm from the air bag deployment. The contact received medical assistance. A police report was filed, but the contact did not have the police report number available. The vehicle was towed and totaled. The vehicle rental company was notified of the failure. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. The VIN was not available.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
Excessive oil consumption, a sticky dash and power window switch
The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving, the "Check Oil" warning light illuminated. The contact added oil to the engine. The contact was informed that the check oil warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer where an oil consumption test was performed. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the engine was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. The contact was adding several quarts of oil every 1,000 miles driven. The vehicle was not repaired due to cost. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the Extended Warranty had been exceeded. The failure mileage was approximately 137,000.

I purchased a 2009 Toyota Camry on [XXX]. After a few years, the dashboard became soft and sticky. During the summer of 2018, I noticed it melting on a hot sunny day. I looked into having it replaced. There was a warranty enhancement notification letter previously sent to me, which stated this type of known problem would be covered for up to 10 years since car was first placed in service. Unfortunately, I didn’t determine this was enough of a problem to me until [XXX]. I missed the warranty extension by 5 days. I contacted Newbold Toyota on June 29, 2018, and the service manager said that after the 10 years, it was the manufacturer's responsibility and there is nothing they can do, except to charge me for the repair. The repair was estimated at approx. $1,500 for the dashboard replacement. At first, I thought "Oh well, I can live with this." But now the dashboard has melted so much that it now reflects sunlight into the windshield so badly that it is has become a safety hazard. It is very difficult to see through the windshield when driving towards the sun or with the sun directly above on a sunny day (even while wearing sunglasses). So the defective dashboard is now causing a very hazardous driving condition. So I contacted the national Toyota Customer Service Center, and they said essentially the same thing as Newbold Toyota. There was nothing they can do now. Since this design/material flaw has caused such a serious hazard when driving the car, and this is now a safety issue, I believe Toyota should be held responsible and should pay for the repair to fix this safety issue. When I purchased this car, I had no idea the dashboard had an expiration date. Had I noticed the melting a few days earlier they would have paid for the replacement. So why does their responsibility to fix this defect/safety issue end after 10 years? I don’t believe Toyota considers this a safety issue, or I believe they would fix it. Thank you. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U
The replaced dashboard ( the first dashboard was replaced due to a recall about melting dashboards) is now melting just like the first one and is causing significant glare in on the windshield. Avoided two (2) near accidents when the glare from the sun impaired my vision of the traffic in front of me.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
I have 2009 Toyota Camry LE, the problem is engine oil, if I changed/filled the engine oil in certified stores, but after 400 miles the engine oil is not in the engine chamber I checked the leaks or any other sort of damage but there's nothing like that I verified the same thing with the dealership too. Basically my point is due to extensive consumption of engine oil the engine will brake in the middle of driving and there are chances it will explode and there's a DANGER while driving the car it's like pulled the granite pin and sit above it. And due to this the braking system will fail and the person loose his life and the dependses will be suffered a lot. Please look at this issue. Thank you.
Dear, I am writing to formally document a complaint regarding the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) warning lights actuator in my 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid, I noticed an issue with the ABS system, which prompted the activation of the warning lights on my vehicle’s dashboard. The problem I encountered involves the following: 1. ABS Warning Lights: The ABS warning lights, including the ABS indicator and the brake system warning light, suddenly illuminated on the dashboard without any prior warning or indication of an issue. 2. Braking Performance: Subsequent to the illumination of the warning lights, I noticed a significant decrease in the vehicle’s braking performance, especially during emergency stops and when driving on slippery or wet surfaces. This issue presents a serious safety concern as it impacts the vehicle’s ability to maintain safe braking in various conditions. confirming the ABS actuator as the likely source of the problem. I kindly request that this complaint be addressed promptly, as I believe that a malfunctioning ABS system poses a substantial safety risk to both the driver and other road users. I trust that Toyota’s commitment to customer safety and satisfaction will lead to a quick resolution of this matter. Please contact me at [XXX] or [XXX] to schedule the necessary repairs or to discuss any additional information required. I look forward to your prompt response and a resolution to this pressing issue. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owned a 2009 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving at approximately 40 MPH, another vehicle ran a stop sign and collided with the drivers front side of the vehicle and the air bags did not deploy as intended. The contact's daughter sustained chest, knee, and right wrist injuries, and she received medical attention. The contact added that the driver's door was not able to open fully after the collision. The fire department arrived, and a police report was filed, but the report number was not available at this time. The vehicle was towed to an impound lot, where it was later deemed totaled. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a complaint was filed. In addition, the contact was told that they could not determine what caused the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.
The vehicle was involved in a rollover crash at 60 mph that ended in striking a tree, which intruded upon the entire backseat area. The driver/passenger airbag(s) did not deploy despite conditions where deployment should have occurred. There were no signs of prior deployment or tampering: to my knowledge, the airbag system had not previously deployed or been serviced for that. The airbag system is available for inspection, as the vehicle was sold to the insurance company. My safety was put at risk as I sustained physical injuries that may have been prevented by airbag deployment. The vehicle was inspected by insurance representatives. There were no prior warning lamps regarding the airbags prior to the crash.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.

VSC WARNING APPEARED ON DASHBOARD. ABS WARNING LIGHT AND PS LIGHT IS ON TOO. I HAD THE ABS ACTUATOR REPLACED IN FEBRUARY 2019 WHEN THE VSC WARNING FIRST APPEARED. I AM HAVING THE SAME ISSUE PLUS THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT. VEHICLE WAS PARKED AT THE STORE, WHEN I RETURNED TO MY CAR AND TURNED CAR ON, THE LIGHTS STARTED FLASHING AND WILL NOT TURN OFF.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
I bought my car in October 2009. I did not discover until years later that the pistons for the 2009 Toyota Camry Le did not fit correctly. This caused oil consumption problems, but it did not start happening until a 3-year warranty and at about 60-70 thousand miles. I did not get a notice of recall notice of Toyota's resolution to the problem, because they had the wrong apartment number and email address which I was told by Rep. Sherry and Rose at Toyota Corporation. Rep. said she was sending information to higher up at the corporation instead she sending it to the dealership. I did not get notice of a class action suit/resolution, trotter body, or melting dashboard. I have paid at least $6-7 thousand to dealerships workmanship is bad. I need help!! Because I did not get notices Toyota should fix and compensate me for repairs. Also, they replaced my hold break system because they assumed the shrieking noise was the break. This was done without my permission. I had to replace the axle they replaced less than a year ago. I am frustrated. I can not pay out any more money. My car stopped working on [XXX] I had to have it told to the dealership in Mamaroneck. Rep Sherry told me the trotter body is on recall until 2026, dealership is saying no. I can be reached at [XXX] . INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
WHILE DRIVING, ON BRAKING, THE VEHICLE STARTED MAKING A GRINDING/RUBBING NOISE APPEARING TO COME FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE NOISE SEEMED AS IF THE VEHICLE ENGINE/MOTOR WAS GOING TO SEIZE UP OR SOMETHING WOULD BREAK INSIDE. SLOWLY TOOK IT TO A LOCAL TIRE KINGDOM REPAIR SHOP WHO WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING ONCE THEY STARTED THE VEHICLE AND WERE ALARMED BY THE ENGINE NOISE. ADVISED TO TAKE IT TO AN ENGINE REPAIR SHOP. SLOWLY, CAUTIOUSLY DROVE HOME AND PARKED. ON STARTING THE VEHICLE IN THE GARAGE, NEXT DAY, THE ENGINE SEEMS TO RUN FINE ON PARKED AND NEUTRAL. ON SHIFTING TO DRIVE OR REVERSE THE RUBBING/GRINDING NOISE BEGINS AGAIN. HAVE BEEN RESTRAINED TO SITTING AT HOME INSTEAD OF DOING MY RIDE SHARING AND DELIVERY WORK. RECENTLY HAD THE TIMING CHAIN AND CAM SHAFT GEAR REPLACED.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DASHBOARD WAS STICKY AND MELTED. ALSO, THERE WAS AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF LINT ON THE DASHBOARD AND THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO KINGS TOYOTA (4700 FIELDS ERTEL RD, CINCINNATI, OH 45249, (513) 683-5440) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE DASHBOARD WAS MELTED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 1908150490, BUT NO ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000. *BF CONSUMER STATED NOW IT HAS ACTUALLY BROKEN DOWN TO THE POINT THAT THE PADDING AND VINYL COVERING JUST RUB OFF. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT MANUFACTURERS WERE REQUIRED TO INSTALL PADDED DASHBOARDS YEARS AGO FOR SAFETY PURPOSES. TOYOTA DID EXTEND THE WARRANT BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM BUT THE BREAK DOWN STARTED NATURALLY AFTER THE WARRANTY PERIOD. *JB
4 NEW YOKOHAMA AVID ASCEND P215 60 R16 TIRES PURCHASED FROM TOYOTA DEALER/SERVICE CENTER ON 4/10-11/18, CAR MILEAGE 82455. ON 6/6/18 ONE TIRE REPLACED DUE TO LARGE BULGE IN SIDE WALL OF RIGHT FRONT TIRE (CAR MILEAGE 84540). REQUESTED THAT ALL OTHER TIRES BE INSPECTED FOR DEFECTS AT THE TIME THIS TIRE WAS REPLACED; WAS TOLD ALL OTHER TIRES WERE FINE; NO BULGES. ON 6/11/18 (5 DAYS LATER) NOTED A BULGE IN THE SIDE WALL OF THE RIGHT REAR TIRE WHICH IS 3 INCH BY 2 INCH. I'VE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO TELL THEM I WANT A REFUND ON THESE TIRES AS I DON'T TRUST THE YOKOHAMA TIRES ANY MORE...WAITING FOR A RESPONSE IN BOTH CASES, FORTUNATELY, I WAS NOT TRAVELING ON AN INTERSTATE, AND THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY WHEN I NOTICED THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, I DO A LOT OF INTERSTATE TRAVEL. I'M ESPECIALLY CONCERNED BECAUSE THERE WAS A TIRE SALE AT THE DEALERSHIP AT THE TIME I PURCHASED THESE TIRES' SINCE TWO OF THE FOUR OF MY NEW TIRES (SO FAR) WERE DEFECTIVE, I WONDER HOW MANY OTHERS HAVE PURCHASED TIRES DURING THIS SALE. I'M NOT SURE HOW I CAN TAKE A PICTURE OF THE BUBBLE, BUT WOULD BE HAPPY TO DO SO, IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING ANY RECEIPT INFORMATION NEEDED TO FURTHER INVESTIGATE. PLEASE ADVISE.

2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE, SHE DETECTED A SLIGHT CHALLENGE AS SHE SHIFTED THE GEARS. THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED AND THE PROBLEM SEEMED TO HAVE DISAPPEARED. UNFORTUNATELY, SUBSEQUENT INSPECTIONS AND MAINTENANCE SERVICE DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. DURING HER DRIVE ON JUNE 1, 2013, THE CLUTCH PEDAL BECAME SLUGGISH AND DID NOT IMMEDIATELY RETURN TO ITS ORIGINAL POSITION UPON RELEASE AND WITHIN SECONDS, IT STAYED STUCK TO THE FLOOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. ALTHOUGH, SHE WAS NOT CHARGED, THE SERVICE INCLUDED AN ADJUSTMENT TO THE CLUTCH PEDAL AND A TEST DRIVE. ADDITIONALLY, IT WAS SUGGESTED SHE RETURN THE VEHICLE FOR FURTHER EVALUATION IF THE ISSUE BECAME PROBLEMATIC. THE PROBLEM WITH THE CLUTCH AND EVENTUALLY THE STICK RESURFACED SEVERAL HOURS AFTER RETRIEVING THE VEHICLE FROM THE DEALER. THE CONSUMER RETURNED TO THE DEALER, WHERE THEY REPLACED THE ACCUMULATOR ASSEMBLY, HOSE, TUBE AND CLUTCH RELEASE.
WHEN ATTEMPTING TO PARK, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND I WAS FORCED TO STOP IT BY RUNNING INTO A PALM TREE IN ORDER TO AVOID HITTING PEOPLE AND OTHER CARS OR CAUSING MORE SERIOUS DAMAGE. *JS
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
Excessive oil consumption, I was not sent a recall notice on excessive oil consumption of my 2009 Toyota Camry that I purchased on 9/30/2009. Excessive oil consumption relates to the manufacturer defect of the 2009 and other model cars. The pistons and motor did not fit correctly which is causing excessive oil consumption along with other problems that relate to it. I bought my car in 2009, the problem was discovered between 2008-2015. I was not sent a recall notice so I could have brought my car in to fix it. The problem does not show up until the warranty expires or 60,000 later. I was not sent a recall because my car was new and it would be years before the problem starts to happen. I should have been notified regardless. I take good care of my car's maintenance. When I found out about the recall about 2 years ago from google the internet and I saw the class action lawsuits that was field. I still was not notified about the recalls. Now the problem is happening. Please help me I can not afford another car. Everyone should have been notified about the recall.
Bob Tyler Toyota sold me a 2009 Toyota Camry when they knew that the 2009 Camrys had an oil consumption problem. I learned of a class action lawsuit that was filed against Toyota regarding this problem. Toyota announced a program to extend warranty coverage to address customer complaints of Excessive Engine Oil Consumption on certain 2007-2009 Camrys. Toyota was supposed to replace parts on the affected Toyota Camrys for vehicles exhibiting excessive engine oil consumption. Eligibility for part replacement under this warranty enhancement Program is dependent on a Toyota dealer engine oil consumption test in accordance with T-SB-0158-14(Toyota) and S-SB-0031-14(Scion). I took my Toyota Camry to Bob Tyler for routine maintenance/oil changes and other maintenance. I noticed that my Toyota was burning a quart of oil every few hundred miles. I took my Camry to Bob Tyler Toyota and they did the oil consumption test and stated that my car narrowly passed so it did not qualify to be fixed. Since my Camry has gotten worse. My Camry only has 108,000 miles on it which is less than the cutoff mileage that Toyota has set for oil consumption problems. I took my Toyota back to Bob Tyler this year and was advised that my Camry is over the age limit for the Oil Consumption problem. I met with Bob Tyler and advised him of the problem that I was having with my 2009 Toyota Camry. I advised that my Camry has been burning oil and that the maintenance department never brought it to my attention before the age of my Camry exceeded the warranty cutoff. Bob Tyler said it was not his problem. Bob Tyler Toyota never made it clear when the cutoff age/mileage for a car to be covered started and ended. Bob Tyler now refuses to do repairs on my Camry and it is getting worse. Bob Tyler knows that this oil problem is hazardous to the driver and passengers. I would like to have my Camry repaired or receive refund in amount of repair cost so I can have it repaired at a different Toyota Dealership.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
At about 60,000 miles, the turn signal popped out making it unsafe to drive. I had the turn signal replaced, then at about 66,000 miles, the horn quit working and the Airbag light came on. This was not only a safety issue but caused the vehicle to fail state inspection. I contacted Toyota to reimburse me for the expense incurred for replacing the Spiral Cable but they refused based on the reason that the 36000 miles warranty had expired. In my opinion, the issue I faced was due to a faulty Spiral Cable and the 36000 miles warranty clause should not apply. There are other Toyota owners who have reported the same issue to NHTSA. 2009 Toyota Corolla was recalled for the same defect but Camry was not. Based on the complaints I have seen, Camry should have been recalled too.
I OWN A 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY WHICH I PURCHASED NEW. I NOTICED THAT MY HEADLIGHTS IN THE LOW BEAM FUNCTION ARE VERY DIM, TO THE POINT OF BEING DANGEROUSLY DIM. THE TOYOTA DEALER STATED THAT THE LENS IN THE HEADLIGHT HOUSING HAS CLOUDED DUE TO UV DAMAGE AND USE. THE LIGHT BULB ITSELF FUNCTIONS PERFECTLY FINE, BUT THE LENS ENGINEERED TO MAGNIFY THE LOW-BEAM LIGHT IS WHAT IS CAUSING THE DECREASE OF VISIBLE LIGHT. I STATED THAT I ALSO OWN A 2003 TOYOTA CAMRY THAT HAS NO PROBLEMS WITH THE HEADLIGHTS AND IT PROVIDES ENOUGH LIGHT. THE SOLUTION IS TO REPLACE BOTH LIGHT HOUSINGS TO THE TUNE OF $400.00 EACH. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THIS IS A REGULAR OPERATING EXPENSE, LIKE REPLACING THE ALTERNATOR. WITH LABOR, THIS EXPENSE WILL BE CLOSER TO $1000.00 INSTEAD OF CHANGING TWO HEADLAMPS FOR $30.00 EACH. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS TECHNOLOGY DOESN'T WORK, AND IS DANGEROUS. THESE HEADLIGHTS ARE STILL BEING USED ON NEW TOYOTA MODELS.
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY CAR HAS EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. I HAD TO PUT A QUART OF OIL IN AFTER DRIVING 150 MILES! ALSO ONE OF THE SEAT BELTS IN THE BACK DOES NOT HAVE ANY GIVE, ITS TIGHT, SNAPS BACK TOO QUICKLY.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE SEATBELT FAILED TO WORK. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE SEATBELT DID NOT RETRACT OR EXTEND AND DUE TO THE FAILURE THE CONTACT WAS NOT ABLE TO USE THE SEATBELT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO ADJUSTED THE SEATBELT AS AN INTERIM FIX AND RECOMMENDED THAT THE SEATBELT BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS TO BE FURTHER INSPECTED BY AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 102,473.
Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
