2005 Toyota Corolla Problems
Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component
Data refreshed
What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2005 Toyota Corolla, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
Was in a wreck where I ended up rear ending a truck. I dont know how fast I was at after putting on the brakes. But originally it was 60 mph speed limit. The air bags did not deploy at all
I was in the middle lane and a car came into my lane so I swerved and a car came up on me in the right lane and my car did a 360 and ended up in a ditch
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY TOYODA CORROLLA HAD TWO RECALLS ONE IS THE DEFECTIVE ECM WHICH CAUSES THE CAE TO BE UN RISK OF A SERIOUS ACCIDENT BECAUSE IT CAN STALL WHILE DRIVING, THIS PROBLEMAS DAMAGED MY CAR TRANSMISIN AFTER THEY SUPPOSEDLY CHANGED THE PART, THEY EITHER DIDNT FIXED IT OR REPLACED IT WITH ANOTHER DEFECTIVE PART, NOW MY CAR HESITATES ABD CHEK ENGINE LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON DUE TO THE ECM AGAIN NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY, I CONTACTES TOYOTA CORPORATE AND AL THEY DID WAS TO GIVE ME THE RUN AROUND I CONTACTES THE CEO AND HE REJECTED MY EMAILS, I WANT THIS TO BE REPORTES UN CASE ME ABD MY CHILD CAN GET INJURED DUE TO THAT DEFECT TOYOTA DIDNT FIXED PROPERLY.ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED.
THE VEHICLE WAS BOUGHT IN USA IN 2004, AND WAS LEGALLY TRANSFERRED TO ANOTHER COUNTRY IN 2010. THE RECALLS WERE NOT RECEIVED IN TIME TO TAKE ACTION AND FIX THE CAR IN USA. THE OTHER COUNTRY DOES NOT HAVE THE “KNOW HOW” TO FIX WHAT IS STATED IN THE RECALLS (TAKATA AIRBAG RECALL AND A ENGINE CONTROL MODULE RECALL). CAN YOU STOP SENDING SAFETY RECALLS IN USA AND REDIRECT THEM TO THE OTHER COUNTRY? CAN YOU PROVIDE THE “KNOW HOW” TO THE NEW COUNTRY TO FIX THE CAR? TOYOTA HAS OFFICES AND REPAIR STORES IN THE NEW COUNTRY. THE VEHICLE IS NOT REGISTERED IN USA DMV SINCE 2010, BUT IT IS IN THE NEW COUNTRYS DMV. *TR
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
I had the airbag repaired during the recall. However, the airbag warning light remains on. In addition, the speedometer has stopped at 299,999 although the trip meter still works. The paint is peeling and the roof is rusting which is classic for toyota.
I HAVE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND AT RANDOM TIMES WHILE I AM DRIVING AND IN MOTION, I'LL PUSH IN THE CLUTCH TO BRAKE OR COAST, THE RPMS GO DOWN UNTIL THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF, AND THE STEERING WHEEL GOES HARD. THE HEADLIGHTS AND DASH LIGHTS STILL WORK, IN FACT ALL THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS, LIKE THE CHECK ENGINE AND MAINTENANCE REQUIRED LIGHTS, ACTUALLY COME ON (JUST LIKE WHEN YOU'RE KEY IGNITION IS IN THE "ON" POSITION BUT YOU HAVEN'T STARTED THE ENGINE YET). THE CAR STARTS RIGHT BACK UP WHEN I TURN THE IGNITION OR POP THE CLUTCH WHILE IN GEAR. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING ABOUT ONCE EVERY WEEK EVER SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR OVER 4 YEARS AGO. WITHIN THE PAST COUPLE OF MONTHS AT RANDOM TIMES WHEN TRYING TO START MY CAR MY CAR (STATIONARY), THE ENGINE WILL TURN OVER BUT WON'T START ON FIRST TRY. ON SECOND TRY I WILL TURN THE IGNITION AND PUMP THE GAS PEDAL AND AFTER A FEW SECONDS IT WILL START UP AND RUN PERFECTLY FINE. I'VE READ ABOUT THE RECALL OF THE ECM FOR MY MAKE, MODEL, AND YEAR, BUT WHEN I SEARCH MY VIN IT COMES BACK WITH NO CURRENT RECALLS. WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNING THE VEHICLE (PURCHASED FROM PRIVATE PARTY IN AUGUST OF 2015), I LEARNED OF THE AIRBAG RECALL AND TOOK IN AND GOT IT FIXED, BUT A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO, ABOUT 2.5 YEARS AFTER TAKING IT IN FOR THE RECALL, MY SRS LIGHT CAME ON AS WELL. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS NOT ILLUMINATED AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY, BUT I AM A LITTLE WORRIED ABOUT SAFETY ESPECIALLY NOW THAT THE SRS LIGHT HAS COME ON. ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS I HAVE BEEN SURPRISED BY THE ENGINE SHUT OFF WHILE TRYING TO MAKE A TURN, WHICH VERY EASILY COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT, AND NOW IF I DO GET IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE AIRBAG SYSTEM FAILS, THEN I COULD BE INJURED EVEN MORE SEVERELY OR DIE. I'M A COLLEGE STUDENT ON A VERY TIGHT BUDGET, OTHERWISE I WOULD'VE JUST SEEN A MECHANIC BY NOW. I THOUGHT I'D TRY FILING A COMPLAINT FIRST.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while driving, the odometer failed to exceed 299,999. The local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 299,999.
My airbag light stays on and I heard if the air bag gis off it could have metal in it..that don't sound like something I want to happen...also this cars power go's out and back on its scary when your driving down the road.it only has 141k miles something is wrong...
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
Complaint Against Ben Nielsen Skyline Automotive – Faulty Repairs & Lack of Response I am filing a complaint regarding incomplete and faulty repairs performed on my household’s 2005 Toyota Corolla CE at Ben Nielsen Skyline Automotive on November 22, 2024 (Invoice #1 attached) and January 3, 2025 (Invoice #2 attached). During my first visit, the mechanic identified an oil leak, added dye to locate the source, and instructed me to return after 100 miles for further repairs. I followed these instructions and returned on January 3, 2025, when the shop also adjusted the tie rod and installed new rear brakes. At the time, I trusted that the work had been completed to a professional standard and that my vehicle was safe to drive. However, during a visit to Shirlington Shell on February 22, 2025, for an unrelated inspection (Invoice #3 attached), their mechanic raised serious concerns about the quality of repairs done by Ben Nielsen Skyline Automotive: - The tie rod adjustment was not completed properly, which the second mechanic stated made the car potentially unsafe to drive (video evidence available upon request). - The fluid leak was not fully resolved. - The rear brakes installed by Ben Nielsen Skyline Automotive are making noise, suggesting they were not installed correctly. These issues indicate that the repairs I paid for were either incomplete or improperly performed, leading to safety concerns and additional costs to diagnose and correct the problems. After discovering these faults, I made multiple attempts to contact Ben Nielsen Skyline Automotive via phone and email to request a resolution, including a full reimbursement for the tie rod adjustment, fluid leak repair, and rear brake installation. Unfortunately, my email messages and calls have gone unanswered, leaving me no choice but to escalate this matter.
AS I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT I BEGAN TO STEP ON THE BRAKES AND THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO CRASH INTO A WALL CAUSING A MAJOR INJURIES TO MY BODY AND CAR. THE CAR WOULD NO LONGER START AND I HAD TO TOW THE CAR TO MY HOME UNTIL A MECHANIC CAME TO START THE CAR AND WE HAD NOTICED THAT WHEN THE CAR IS IN PARK IT WILL KEEP GOING.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
Unknown - The airbag light has been on for a while. Check engine light is also on, and after a few repairs/replacements of diagnosed issues the light remains. A Texas vehicle inspection report shows a P0420 fault code that will not go away, as well as a P0741 fault code about a torque converter clutch circuit underperforming or is stuck/off. I have a technical service bulletin from the inspection station that reads as follows: 10051865 Date: 04/16/2013 Toyota: In a collision, to help reduce injuries, with seat belt pre=tensioner and supplemental restraint systems (srs), it's possible that the devices may or may not perform as expected with unintended deployment.

WHILE I WAS GOING INTO A RIGHT TURN THE VEHICLE KEEP GOING IN A STRAIGHT LINE LOSING ALL CONTROLS, THE BRAKES DID NOT ENGAGE CAUSING THE CAR TO SLAM INTO THE CURB. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR 35 YEARS AND THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME WHILE DRIVING.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.

Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
Paint on my vehicle is changing on the roof and trunk is like the paint coating has worn off and the vehicle roof and trunk are peeling off.
I had the airbag repaired during the recall. However, the airbag warning light remains on. In addition, the speedometer has stopped at 299,999 although the trip meter still works. The paint is peeling and the roof is rusting which is classic for toyota.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHIFT AND JERK ABNORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 10V384000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) AND WOULD NEED REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL YET THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE SAME FAILURE CODES WERE PRODUCED BY THE DIAGNOSTIC AND THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD ALSO NEED REPLACING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT A CASE MANAGER WOULD BE IN TOUCH WITH THE CONTACT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN REGARDS TO RECALL 10V384000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). PRIOR TO HER TAKING THE VEHICLE IN FOR THE RECALL REPAIR, SHE EXPERIENCED THE DIFFICULTY SHIFTING. AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE REPAIRED, SHE NOTICED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENTAL PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A DEALER AND ADVISED HER THAT SHE NEEDED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 144,800.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.

OCTOBER 2013, MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING HER 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA IN SOUTHERN CA, WHEN SMOKE STARTED TO FILL THE CAR. THE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE DRIVER SIDE MASTER WINDOW SWITCH. THE SMOKE LASTED A FEW MINUTES, AND A BURNING SMELL OF PLASTIC ALSO FILLED THE CAR. THE CAR WAS STILL ABLE TO DRIVE, BUT THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN I TOOK A LOOK AT THE SWITCH, NONE OF THE SWITCHES AT THE MASTER CONTROL WERE WORKING AND ALL FELT COMPLETELY LOOSE. I PULLED THE SWITCH PANEL AWAY FROM THE DOOR AND COULD SEE HOW THE PLASTIC WAS COMPLETELY MELTED AND HAD BURNED HOLES THROUGH THE SWITCH. I CONTACTED THE DEALER AND ALL THEY COULD SAY WAS THAT THERE WAS NOT A RECALL ON THIS VIN# AND THEY WOULD NOT TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM, BUT THEY WERE AWARE OF PROBLEMS ON OTHER VIN #'S IN THE SAME MODEL. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A FIRE HAZARD WITH THIS CAR AND TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT IT. WHAT DOES IT TAKE FOR A LARGE COMPANY TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF A KNOWN PROBLEM? I RECENTLY CALLED THEM AGAIN TO SEE IF THEY HAVE ISSUED A RECALL AND STILL HAVE NOT. NOW I AM EVEN MORE UPSET! *TR
2005 TOYOTA COROLLA DRIVER SIDE WINDOW SHATTERED. MY NEIGHBOR WITNESSED THE ENTIRE EVENT HE SAID HE HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION AND SAW THAT THE WINDOW HAD EXPLODED. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY TOYOTA, THANK GOD I WASN'T IN THE CAR DRIVING, IT COULD HAVE LEAD TO A MASSIVE ACCIDENT OR SERIOUS PHYSICAL HARM FROM THE GLASS TO MYSELF. *TR
Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
AIR BAG HAS SHUT OFF DID NOT OPEN. *TR
TOYOTA ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE (#AC002-06) BULLETIN REGARDING THE CONDENSER NOT BEING PROPERLY PROTECTED FOR THE 05 AND 06 COROLLA MODELS. THEY SAID THAT YOU COULD TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY WOULD INSTALL NETTING AROUND THE CONDENSER- BUT IF IT IS ALREADY BROKEN- THEN YOU ARE OUT OF LUCK. MINE HAS BEEN BROKEN FOR TWO YEARS-NOW I AM NOW SPENDING OVER $500 TO REPLACE THE CONDENSER AND MY CO-WORKER DRIVES AN 06 MODEL AND HERS HAS BEEN BROKEN FOR A YEAR. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN FOR PEOPLE DRIVING IN EXTREME HEAT. WE ARE TAKING A FAMILY TRIP TO NV THIS WEEKEND, SO I HAD TO BITE THE BULLET AND GET MINE FIXED, BUT THIS IS RIDICULOUS. HOW CAN THEY ADMIT A DESIGN FLAW AND THEN NOT FIX IT:( ALSO- MY CAR LOST 4 HUBCAPS WITHIN 2 WEEKS FROM PURCHASING IT AND I HAVE NOTICED SEVERAL OTHERS AROUND TOWN WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. WHILE I GOT SOME CHEAP ONES TO REPLACE THE ONES I LOST- HAVING YOUR HUBCAPS FLY OFF IS A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE AND CONCERN. *TR
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
I purchased my vehicle in May 2020. Since that time, there has been a noise that occurs when I apply the brakes. In March of 2021 I took my car to American tire shop where they charged me $1900 to supposedly fix an issue with the rear suspension 'arm,' but also stated it required more work and suggested it was a safety issue. The noise is still there and I fear potential safety issues but can not afford thousands of dollars in 'supposed' repairs.
TAKATA RECALL: THE PASSENGER AIRBAG WAS REPLACED UNDER A RECALL SEVERAL YEARS AGO. THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT IS NOW ON. ALSO, THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL BEARING HAS BEEN REPLACED AT LEAST SIX TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN DECEMBER, 2008. THE FIRST TWO OR THREE WERE REPLACED WHILE THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, BUT I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE SAME RIGHT FRONT WHEEL BEARING ANOTHER THREE TO FOUR TIMES THEREAFTER AT MY OWN EXPENSE. THE LAST TIME I HAD TO REPLACE THE WHEEL BEARING WAS IN DECEMBER, 2016, WHILE ON VACATION. IT SEEMS THE PROBLEM JUST HASN'T BEEN PERMANENTLY SOLVED. SO FRUSTRATING AND EXPENSIVE FOR ANOTHER WONDERFUL VEHICLE.
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
I HAVE BEEN A BIG PROPONENT OF COOPER TIRES DUE TO THEIR MANUFACTURING PROCESSES. I'VE SINCE CHANGED MY MIND DUE TO THE 3 BLOW OUTS WE'VE HAD WITH THE CS4 TOURING (2) AND NOW MOST RECENT CS5 GRAND TOURING LINE. THE CS5 TIRES WERE PURCHASED LESS THAN A YEAR AGO. ALL HAVE BEEN ON THE SIDEWALL AND ALL HAVE BEEN ON THE FREEWAY GOING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. IT APPEARS COOPER TIRES DOES NOT CARE ABOUT PEOPLE LIVES! OBVIOUSLY QUALITY IS NOT ONE OF THEIR CORE VALUES. TRY BEING IN TRAFFIC ON THE FREEWAY AND HAVING A BLOW OUT THOSE ARE THE CONSEQUENCES. FORTUNATELY NOBODY WAS HURT JUST EXTREMELY SCARED. I WILL BE TAKING THE TIRES BACK TO EXPRESS TIRES TO SEE WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT THEY WILL PROVIDE. BTW ONLY OPTION TO SELECT IS CS4 TOURING BUT THESE ARE THE CS5 GRAND TOURING. SAME PROBLEM BUILT INTO THE NEWER MODEL.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, MY BACK TIRE'S SIDEWALL BLEW OUT AND I WAS FORCED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE TIRE WAS IN GOOD CONDITION WITH PLENTY OF TREAD DEPTH LEFT. VEHICLE IS PARKED ON PAVEMENT AND NOT GRASS TO PROMOTE MOISTURE/DRY ROT. AFTER READING ON LINE, MICHELIN HAS RECALLED 100,000 TIRES LAST MONTH. A COWORKER STATED THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO THEIR MICHELIN TIRE LAST WEEK. PLEASE INVESTIGATE SMALLER MICHELIN TIRES. THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECTIVE TIRE AND SEEMS TO BE VERY COMMON. LUCKILY IT WAS A BACK TIRE AND I REMAINED IN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE.
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE BACK SEATS DO ARE NOT ABLE TO BE OPENED FROM INSIDE THE CAR. THE TRUNK ALSO MALFUNCTIONED AND WILL NOT OPEN UP. IF THERE WAS A CHILD OR SOMEONE IN THE TRUNK, THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET OUT WITHOUT PULLING APART THE WHOLE TRUNK ITSELF. I FIND THIS VERY DANGEROUS AND MAKES ME GRATEFUL ONE OF MY CHILDREN WEREN'T TRAPPED INSIDE WHEN IT DECIDED TO STOP WORKING PROPERLY. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND A RESOLUTION TO THIS MATTER SO THE SAFETY OF OTHERS IS NOT COMPROMISED! *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO ACCESS THE TRUNK MANUALLY WITH THE KEY AND INTERIOR TRUNK RELEASE MECHANISM; HOWEVER , THE TRUNK WOULD NOT OPEN. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE MALFUNCTION; AND THE CONTACT SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 60,000.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA. WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT, THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS FAILED TO ILLUMINATE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO CAPITAL TOYOTA (LOCATED AT 783 AUTO GROUP AVE NE, SALEM, OR 97301, (503) 399-1011) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT CABLES WERE BURNT AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 147,000.
AIRBAG LIGHT HAS STAYED ON SINCE THE CAR WAS SERVICED BY TOYOTA DEALER IN DES MOINE, IOWA IN NOV. 2016. TOYOTA OF CINCINNATI JUST TOLD ME OVER THE PHONE IT WOULD COST OVER $600 TO FIX IT WITHOUT EVEN SEEING THE CAR.
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated after an air bag recall repair was performed on the vehicle, the front passenger's seat belt warning light illuminated. The dealer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
FRONT DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT NO LONGER BUCKELS ,AND THE SPEED IS TO SLOW IS BEEN LIKE THAT SINCE WE GET THE CAR.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CONDENSER FOR THE AIR CONDITIONER WAS MALFUNCTIONING AFTER BEING REPLACED ONCE IN THE PAST. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE CONDENSER AND VALVES WERE LEAKING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 92,000. UPDATED 08/31/11 *BF UPDATED 09/07/11
I OWN A 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA. A FEW WEEKS AGO, I NOTICED THAT MY AIR CONDITIONER WAS BLOWING HOT AIR. WHEN I HAD IT LOOKED AT BY A MECHANIC, I WAS TOLD THAT DEBRIS GOT INTO THE CONDENSER AND DAMAGED IT, REQUIRING A REPAIR. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND DISCOVERED THAT TOYOTA ISSUED TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN AC002-06 "LOWER GRILLE MESH PROTECTION COVER," WHICH ACKNOWLEDGES THAT THE FAILURE TO INCLUDE A PROTECTION COVER NEAR THE MESH GRILLE HAS CAUSED DEBRIS TO GET INTO THE AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSER, AND THEREBY DAMAGING IT. TOYOTA HAS INCLUDED THE GRILLE PROTECTION COVER IN SUBSEQUENT TOYOTA COROLLA MODELS, BUT IT REFUSES TO ADD THE COVER TO THE OLDER MODELS OR REIMBURSE CUSTOMERS FOR THE EXPENSE IN REPLACING DAMAGED CONDENSERS THAT HAVE RESULTED FROM THIS DESIGN DEFECT. *TR
